1Nầy là các lời của sự giao ước mà Ðức Giê-hô-va dặn biểu Môi-se lập cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, trong xứ Mô-áp, ngoài sự giao ước Ngài đã lập cùng chúng tại Hô-rếp. 2Vậy, Môi-se gọi cả Y-sơ-ra-ên mà nói rằng: Các ngươi đã thấy mọi điều Ðức Giê-hô-va làm trong xứ Ê-díp-tô dưới mắt các ngươi cho Pha-ra-ôn, quần thần và cả xứ người, 3tức là những sự thử thách lớn lao, dấu kỳ, phép lạ mà mắt ngươi đã thấy; 4nhưng cho đến ngày nay Ðức Giê-hô-va không ban cho các ngươi một tấm lòng để biết, mắt để thấy hay là tai để nghe. 5Ta đã dẫn dắt các ngươi bốn mươi năm trong đồng vắng, áo xống không cũ trên mình ngươi, giày không mòn dưới chân ngươi, 6các ngươi không có ăn bánh, uống rượu hay là vật chi say, để cho biết rằng ta, Giê-hô-va, là Ðức Chúa Trời của các ngươi. 7Khi các ngươi đến chốn nầy, Si-hôn, vua Hết-bôn, và Oùc, vua Ba-san, đi ra đón đặng giao chiến cùng chúng ta; chúng ta có đánh bại họ, 8chiếm xứ họ và ban cho chi phái Ru-bên, Gát, và nửa chi phái Ma-na-se, làm sản nghiệp. 9Vậy, các ngươi khá gìn giữ làm theo những lời của sự giao ước nầy, hầu cho các ngươi được may mắn trong mọi việc mình làm. 10Hết thảy các ngươi, nào trưởng tộc, các chi phái, nào các trưởng lão, nào các quan cai, nào mọi người nam của Y-sơ-ra-ên, 11những con trẻ và vợ các ngươi, nào kẻ khách lạ ở trong trại quân ngươi, từ người chặt củi cho đến người xách nước, ngày nay hãy đến chầu trước mặt Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, 12đặng vào trong sự giao ước của Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, và vào trong lời thề mà Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi lập cùng ngươi ngày nay, 13hầu cho ngày nay Ngài lập ngươi lên làm dân của Ngài, và Ngài làm Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, y như Ngài đã phán cùng ngươi, và thề cùng tổ phụ ngươi, là Áp-ra-ham, Y-sác, và Gia-cốp. 14Chẳng phải chỉ với các ngươi mà ta lập giao ước và lời thề nầy thôi; 15nhưng lập với người nào ngày nay đứng tại đây cùng chúng ta, trước mặt Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng ta, luôn với những người nào không có cùng chúng ta trong ngày nay. 16Các ngươi biết sự kiều ngụ của chúng ta trong xứ Ê-díp-tô, và chúng ta đi ngang qua các nước là làm sao. Ðang khi đi ngang địa phận chúng nó, 17các ngươi đã thấy sự gớm ghiếc của chúng nó, và những tà thần quái gở bằng cây, bằng đá, bằng bạc, và bằng vàng ở nơi chúng nó. 18Trong các ngươi, chớ có người nam, người nữ, họ hàng hay là chi phái nào ngày nay trở lòng bỏ Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng ta, đặng đi hầu việc các thần của những dân tộc ấy; trong các ngươi cũng chớ có rễ sanh ra vật độc và ngải cứu. 19Ai nghe các lời của sự thề nầy, chớ có tự khoe nơi lòng rằng: Ta sẽ được bình an, dầu khi ta đi theo sự cứng lòng ta, đến nỗi vật được tưới với vật bị khô, đều cùng hư nát. 20Ðức Giê-hô-va không khứng tha tội cho người, nhưng bấy giờ, cơn giận và sự kỵ tà của Ðức Giê-hô-va nổi lên cùng người, và hết thảy sự rủa sả ghi trong sách nầy sẽ chất nặng trên mình người; Ðức Giê-hô-va sẽ xóa tên người khỏi dưới trời, 21và biệt ngươi ra khỏi các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, để bị tai họa, chiếu theo hết các lời trù ẻo của giao ước đã ghi trong sách luật pháp nầy. 22Ðời sau, con cháu sanh ra sau các ngươi, và người khách ở phương xa đến, khi thấy những tai vạ và chứng bịnh mà Ðức Giê-hô-va đã hành hại xứ nầy, 23khi thấy toàn xứ chỉ diêm, muối, và cháy tiêu, không giống gieo, không sản vật chi hết, chẳng một thứ cỏ nào mọc, giống như sự hủy hoại của Sô-đôm và Gô-mô-rơ, Át-ma và Sê-bô-im bị Ðức Giê-hô-va phá diệt trong cơn thạnh nộ Ngài, 24thì chúng nó và các nước sẽ hỏi rằng: Sao Ðức Giê-hô-va đãi xứ nầy như thế? Căn cớ của sự thạnh nộ lớn lao nầy là làm sao? 25Người ta sẽ đáp rằng: Ấy vì họ bội giao ước mà Giê-hô-va, Ðức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ họ, đã lập cùng họ, khi dẫn họ ra khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô; 26Ấy vì họ đi hầu việc và thờ lạy các thần mà mình chưa hề biết, và Ngài không phân phát cho. 27Cơn thạnh nộ của Ðức Giê-hô-va đã nổi phừng lên cùng xứ nầy, đặng giáng trên nó các sự rủa sả ghi trong sách nầy, 28và trong cơn thạnh nộ, hờn giận, và nổi nóng, Ðức Giê-hô-va đã rút dân nầy khỏi đất họ, và ném vào một xứ khác, như điều đó hiện có ngày nay. 29Những sự bí mật thuộc về Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng ta; song những sự bày tỏ thuộc về chúng ta, và con cháu chúng ta đời đời, để chúng ta làm theo mọi lời của luật pháp nầy.
1These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant which he made with them in Horeb. 2Moses called to all Israel, and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that Yahweh did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land; 3the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders. 4But Yahweh has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day. 5I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not grown old on you, and your shoes have not grown old on your feet. 6You have not eaten bread, neither have you drunk wine or strong drink; that you may know that I am Yahweh your God. 7When you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us to battle, and we struck them. 8We took their land, and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the Manassites. 9Therefore keep the words of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do. 10All of you stand this day in the presence of Yahweh your God; your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel, 11your little ones, your wives, and the foreigners who are in the midst of your camps, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water; 12that you may enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God, and into his oath, which Yahweh your God makes with you this day; 13that he may establish you this day as his people, and that he may be your God, as he spoke to you, and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 14Neither do I make this covenant and this oath with you only, 15but with those who stand here with us this day before Yahweh our God, and also with those who are not here with us this day 16(for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed; 17and you have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them); 18lest there should be among you man, woman, family, or tribe whose heart turns away this day from Yahweh our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that produces bitter poison; 19and it happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, “I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart, to destroy the moist with the dry.” 20Yahweh will not pardon him, but then Yahweh’s anger and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and all of the curse that is written in this book will fall on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under the sky. 21Yahweh will set him apart for evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all of the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law. 22The generation to come, your children who will rise up after you, and the foreigner who will come from a far land, will say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses with which Yahweh has made it sick; 23and that all of its land is sulfur, salt, and burning, that it is not sown, doesn’t produce, nor does any grass grow in it, like the overthrow of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath; 24even all the nations will say, “Why has Yahweh done thus to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?” 25Then men will say, “Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt, 26and went and served other gods, and worshiped them, gods that they didn’t know, and that he had not given to them. 27Therefore Yahweh’s anger was kindled against this land, to bring on it all the curses that are written in this book. 28Yahweh rooted them out of their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and thrust them into another land, as at this day.” 29The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
1Dit zijn de woorden des verbonds, dat de HEERE Mozes geboden heeft te maken met de kinderen Israels, in het land van Moab, boven het verbond, dat Hij met hen gemaakt had aan Horeb. 2En Mozes riep gans Israel, en zeide tot hen: Gij hebt gezien al wat de HEERE in Egypteland voor uw ogen gedaan heeft, aan Farao, en aan al zijn knechten, en aan zijn land; 3De grote verzoekingen, die uw ogen gezien hebben, diezelve tekenen en grote wonderen. 4Maar de HEERE heeft ulieden niet gegeven een hart om te verstaan, noch ogen om te zien, noch oren om te horen, tot op dezen dag. 5En Ik heb ulieden veertig jaren doen wandelen in de woestijn; uw klederen zijn aan u niet verouderd, en uw schoen is niet verouderd aan uw voet. 6Brood hebt gij niet gegeten, en wijn en sterken drank hebt gij niet gedronken; opdat gij wistet, dat Ik de HEERE, uw God, ben. 7Toen gij nu kwaamt aan deze plaats, toog Sihon, de koning van Hesbon, uit, en Og, de koning van Bazan, ons tegemoet, ten strijde; en wij sloegen hen. 8En wij hebben hun land ingenomen, en dat ten erve gegeven aan de Rubenieten en Gadieten, mitsgaders aan den halven stam der Manassieten. 9Houdt dan de woorden dezes verbonds, en doet ze; opdat gij verstandelijk handelt in alles, wat gij doen zult. 10Gij staat heden allen voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, uws Gods: uw hoofden uwer stammen, uw oudsten, en uw ambtlieden, alle man van Israel; 11Uw kinderkens, uw vrouwen, en uw vreemdeling, die in het midden van uw leger is, van uw houthouwer tot uw waterputter toe; 12Om over te gaan in het verbond des HEEREN, uws Gods, en in Zijn vloek, hetwelk de HEERE, uw God, heden met u maakt; 13Opdat Hij u heden Zichzelven tot een volk bevestige, en Hij u tot een God zij, gelijk als Hij tot u gesproken heeft, en gelijk als Hij uw vaderen, Abraham, Izak en Jakob, gezworen heeft. 14En niet met ulieden alleen maak ik dit verbond en dezen vloek; 15Maar met dengene, die heden hier bij ons voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, onzes Gods, staat; en met dengene, die hier heden bij ons niet is. 16Want gij weet, hoe wij in Egypteland gewoond hebben, en hoe wij doorgetogen zijn door het midden der volken, die gij doorgetogen zijt. 17En gij hebt gezien hun verfoeiselen, en hun drekgoden, hout en steen, zilver en goud, die bij hen waren. 18Dat onder ulieden niet zij een man, of vrouw, of huisgezin, of stam, die zijn hart heden wende van den HEERE, onzen God, om te gaan dienen de goden dezer volken; dat onder ulieden niet zij een wortel, die gal en alsem drage; 19En het geschiede, als hij de woorden dezes vloeks hoort, dat hij zichzelven zegene in zijn hart, zeggende: Ik zal vrede hebben, wanneer ik schoon naar mijns harten goeddunken zal wandelen, om den dronkene te doen tot den dorstige. 20De HEERE zal hem niet willen vergeven; maar alsdan zal des HEEREN toorn en ijver roken over denzelven man, en al de vloek, die in dit boek geschreven is, zal op hem liggen; en de HEERE zal zijn naam van onder den hemel uitdelgen. 21En de HEERE zal hem ten kwade afscheiden van al de stammen Israels, naar alle vloeken des verbonds, dat in het boek dezer wet geschreven is. 22Dan zal zeggen het navolgend geslacht, uw kinderen, die na ulieden opstaan zullen, en de vreemde, die uit verren lande komen zal, als zij zullen zien de plagen dezes lands en deszelfs krankheden, waarmede de HEERE het gekrenkt heeft; 23Dat zijn ganse aarde zij zwavel en zout der verbranding; die niet bezaaid zal zijn, en geen spruit zal voortgebracht hebben, noch enig kruid daarin zal opgekomen zijn; gelijk de omkering van Sodom en Gomorra, Adama en Zeboim, die de HEERE heeft omgekeerd in Zijn toorn en in Zijn grimmigheid; 24En alle volken zullen zeggen: Waarom heeft de HEERE aan dit land alzo gedaan? Wat is de ontsteking van dezen groten toorn? 25Dan zal men zeggen: Omdat zij het verbond des HEEREN, des Gods hunner vaderen, hebben verlaten, dat Hij met hen gemaakt had, als Hij hen uit Egypteland uitvoerde; 26En zij heengegaan zijn, en andere goden gediend en zich voor die gebogen hebben; goden, die hen niet gekend hadden, en geen van welke hun iets medegedeeld had; 27Daarom is de toorn des HEEREN ontstoken tegen dit land, om daarover te brengen al dezen vloek, die in dit boek geschreven is. 28En de HEERE heeft hen uit hun land uitgetrokken, in toorn, en in grimmigheid, en in grote verbolgenheid; en Hij heeft hen verworpen in een ander land, gelijk het is te dezen dage. 29De verborgene dingen zijn voor den HEERE, onzen God; maar de geopenbaarde zijn voor ons en voor onze kinderen, tot in eeuwigheid, om te doen al de woorden dezer wet.
