1Khi nào ngươi ra giao chiến cùng thù nghịch mình, nếu thấy ngựa, xe và binh đông hơn mình, thì chớ sợ; vì Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, là Ðấng đã khiến ngươi lên khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô, ở cùng ngươi. 2Lúc gần khai chiến, thầy tế lễ sẽ bước tới, nói cùng dân sự 3mà rằng: Hỡi Y-sơ-ra-ên, hãy nghe! Ngày nay các ngươi đi giao chiến cùng thù nghịch mình, lòng các ngươi chớ nhát, chớ sợ, chớ run rẩy, và chớ kinh khiếp vì chúng nó; 4bởi Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời các ngươi là Ðấng cùng đi với các ngươi, đặng vì các ngươi đánh kẻ thù nghịch và giải cứu cho. 5Bấy giờ, các quan trưởng sẽ nói cùng dân sự mà rằng: Ai đã cất một nhà mới, mà chưa khánh thành? Hãy đi trờ về nhà mình, e chết nơi chiến trận, rồi một người khác sẽ khánh thành chăng. 6Ai đã trồng một vườn nho và chưa hái trái? Hãy đi trở về nhà mình, kẻo chết nơi chiến trận, rồi một người khác sẽ hái trái chăng. 7Ai đã làm lễ hỏi một người nữ, mà chưa cưới? Hãy đi trở về nhà mình, e chết nơi chiến trận, rồi người khác sẽ cưới nàng chăng. 8Các quan trưởng sẽ cứ nói tiếp cùng dân sự mà rằng: Ai là người sợ và nhất? Hãy đi trở về nhà mình, e lòng của anh em mình tán đởm như lòng mình chăng. 9Vừa khi các quan trưởng nói xong với dân sự, thì phải lập những tướng làm đầu dân sự. 10Khi ngươi đến gần một cái thành đặng hãm, trước phải giảng hòa cùng nó. 11Nếu thành đó đáp hòa và mở cửa cho ngươi, thì toàn dân sự ở đó sẽ nạp thuế và phục dịch ngươi. 12Ví bằng thành không khứng hòa, nhưng khai chiến cùng ngươi, bấy giờ ngươi sẽ vây nó. 13Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi sẽ phó nó vào tay ngươi, rồi ngươi giết hết thảy người nam bằng lưỡi gươm. 14Song ngươi phải thâu cho mình những đàn bà, con trẻ, súc vật, và mọi vật chi ở trong thành, tức là mọi của cướp được. Ngươi sẽ ăn lấy của cướp của quân nghịch mà Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, ban cho ngươi. 15Ngươi phải đối đãi như vậy cùng các thành ở cách xa ngươi, không thuộc về những dân tộc nầy. 16Nhưng trong các thành của những dân tộc nầy, mà Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi ban cho ngươi làm sản nghiệp, thì chớ để sống một vật nào biết thở; 17khá tận diệt dân Hê-tít, dân A-mô-rít, dân Ca-na-an, dân Phê-rê-sít, dân Hê-vít, dân Giê-bu-sít, y như Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi đã phán dặn, 18để chúng nó không dạy các ngươi bắt chước làm theo những sự gớm ghiếc chúng nó đã làm, đặng cúng thờ các thần chúng nó, e các ngươi phạm tội cùng Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời các ngươi chăng. 19Khi ngươi vây một thành nào lâu đặng hãm chiếm, chớ lấy rìu chặt những cây của thành đó, vì ngươi có thể ăn được trái nó. Vậy, chớ chặt nó; vì cây ngoại đồng há là một người để bị ngươi vây sao? 20Ngươi chỉ phải phá hại và chặt những cây mình biết chẳng phải là cây ăn trái; hãy dùng nó cất đồn lũy để đánh thành đang làm giặc với mình đó, cho đến chừng nào nó đầu hàng.
1When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. 2It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people, 3and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies. Don’t let your heart faint! Don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them; 4for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” 5The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. 6What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit. 7What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.” 8The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.” 9It shall be, when the officers have finished speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people. 10When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it. 11It shall be, if it makes you answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become forced laborers to you, and shall serve you. 12If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it. 13When Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword; 14but the women, the little ones, the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its plunder, you shall take for plunder for yourself. You may use the plunder of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you. 15Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations. 16But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes; 17but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you; 18that they not teach you to follow all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God. 19When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them; for you may eat of them. You shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged by you? 20Only the trees that you know are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down. You shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls.
1Wanneer gij zult uittrekken tot den strijd tegen uw vijanden, en zult zien paarden en wagenen, een volk, meerder dan gij, zo zult gij voor hen niet vrezen; want de HEERE, uw God, is met u, Die u uit Egypteland heeft opgevoerd. 2En het zal geschieden, als gijlieden tot den strijd nadert, zo zal de priester toetreden, en tot het volk spreken. 3En tot hen zeggen: Hoort, Israel! gijlieden zijt heden na aan den strijd tegen uw vijanden; uw hart worde niet week, vreest niet, en beeft niet, en verschrikt niet voor hun aangezicht. 4Want het is de HEERE, uw God, Die met u gaat, om voor u te strijden tegen uw vijanden, om u te verlossen. 5Dan zullen de ambtlieden tot het volk spreken, zeggende: Wie is de man, die een nieuw huis heeft gebouwd, en het niet heeft ingewijd? Die ga henen en kere weder naar zijn huis; opdat hij niet misschien sterve in den strijd, en iemand anders dat inwijde. 6En wie is de man, die een wijngaard geplant heeft, en deszelfs vrucht niet heeft genoten? Die ga henen en kere weder naar zijn huis; opdat het hart zijner broederen niet smelte, gelijk zijn hart. 9En het zal geschieden, als die ambtlieden geeindigd zullen hebben te spreken tot het volk, zo zullen zij oversten der heiren aan de spits des volks bestellen. 10Wanneer gij nadert tot een stad om tegen haar te strijden, zo zult gij haar den vrede toeroepen. 11En het zal geschieden, indien zij u vrede zal antwoorden, en u opendoen, zo zal al het volk, dat daarin gevonden wordt, u cijnsbaar zijn, en u dienen. 12Doch zo zij geen vrede met u zal maken, maar krijg tegen u voeren, zo zult gij haar belegeren. 13En de HEERE, uw God, zal haar in uw hand geven; en gij zult alles, wat mannelijk daarin is, slaan met de scherpte des zwaards; 14Behalve de vrouwen, en de kinderkens, en de beesten, en al wat in de stad zijn zal, al haar buit zult gij voor u roven; en gij zult eten den buit uwer vijanden, dien u de HEERE, uw God, gegeven heeft. 15Alzo zult gij aan alle steden doen, die zeer verre van u zijn, die niet zijn van de steden dezer volken. 16Maar van de steden dezer volken, die u de HEERE, uw God, ten erve geeft, zult gij niets laten leven, dat adem heeft. 17Maar gij zult ze ganselijk verbannen: de Hethieten, en de Amorieten, en de Kanaanieten, en de Ferezieten, de Hevieten, en de Jebusieten, gelijk als u de HEERE, uw God, geboden heeft; 18Opdat zij ulieden niet leren te doen naar al hun gruwelen, die zij hun goden gedaan hebben, en gij zondigt tegen den HEERE, uw God. 19Wanneer gij een stad vele dagen zult belegeren, strijdende tegen haar, om die in te nemen, zo zult gij haar geboomte niet verderven, de bijl daaraan drijvende; want gij zult daarvan eten; daarom zult gij dat niet afhouwen (want het geboomte van het veld is des mensen spijze), opdat het voor uw aangezicht kome tot een bolwerk. 20Maar het geboomte, hetwelk gij kennen zult, dat het geen geboomte ter spijze is, dat zult gij verderven en afhouwen; en gij zult een bolwerk bouwen tegen deze stad, dewelke tegen u krijg voert, totdat zij ten onderga.
