1Tôi là Phao-lô, bởi sự nhu mì, nhơn từ của Ðấng Christ mà xin anh em, tôi là người hèn hạ lắm trong khi gặp mặt giữa anh em nhưng lúc vắng mặt, đối với anh em, tỏ ra biết bao là dạn dĩ! 2tôi nài xin anh em chớ ép tôi, khi tôi sẽ có mặt, phải dùng sự dạn dĩ mà tôi toan dùng nghịch cùng mấy kẻ kia tưởng chúng tôi ăn ở theo xác thịt. 3Vì chúng tôi dầu sống trong xác thịt, chớ chẳng tranh chiến theo xác thịt. 4Vả, những khí giới mà chúng tôi dùng để chiến tranh là không phải thuộc về xác thịt đâu, bèn là bởi quyền năng của Ðức Chúa Trời, có sức mạnh để đạp đổ các đồn lũy: 5nhờ khí giới đó chúng tôi đánh đổ các lý luận, mọi sự cao tự nổi lên nghịch cùng sự hiểu biết Ðức Chúa Trời, và bắt hết các ý tưởng làm tôi vâng phục Ðấng Christ. 6Cũng nhờ khí giới đó, chúng tôi sẵn sàng phạt mọi kẻ chẳng phục, khi anh em đã chịu lụy trọn rồi. 7Anh em cứ xem bề ngoài sao? Bằng có ai quyết mình thuộc về Ðấng Christ, hãy ngẫm nghĩ rằng nếu người thuộc về Ðấng Christ, thì chúng tôi cũng thuộc về Ngài. 8Dầu khi tôi khoe mình khí quá về quyền phép Chúa đã ban cho chúng tôi, để gây dựng anh em, chớ chẳng phải để hủy diệt, thì tôi sự không hổ thẹn; 9song tôi chẳng muốn làm bộ dọa anh em bằng thơ từ của tôi. 10Có người nói rằng các thơ của người nặng lời và bạo mạnh; nhưng đến khi có mặt thì người yếu đuối và lời nói chẳng có giá gì. 11Kẻ nói như vậy, hãy nghĩ rằng khi chúng tôi vắng mặt, lời trong thơ thể nào, thì khi có mặt, việc làm cũng thể ấy. 12Thật chúng tôi không dám bằng vai hoặc sánh mình với những người kia, là kẻ hay tự phô mình. Nhưng lấy mình đo mình, lấy mình so sánh với mình, thì họ tỏ ra ít trí khôn. 13Về phần chúng tôi, chẳng muốn khoe mình quá mực, chỉ theo mực về địa phận mà Ðức Chúa Trời đã chỉ định cho chúng tôi tới đến anh em. 14Bởi chưng chúng tôi chẳng vượt quá mực mình, như thể chúng tôi không đến cùng anh em, vì thật chúng tôi đã đem Tin Lành của Ðấng Christ mà đến nơi anh em trước hết. 15Chúng tôi không khoe mình quá mực, cũng không khoe về việc người khác làm; nhưng mong rằng đức tin của anh em thêm lên, thì công việc chúng tôi cũng sẽ lớn lên thêm giữa anh em, theo giới hạn đã định cho chúng tôi, và công việc ấy càng mở mang, 16cho đến nỗi chúng tôi sẽ có thể truyền Tin Lành ra đến các xứ xa hơn xứ anh em, song chúng tôi không hề khoe mình về việc đã làm trong địa phận của người khác. 17Nhưng ai khoe mình, hãy khoe mình trong Chúa. 18Vì ấy chẳng phải là kẻ tự phô mình đáng được ưng chịu, bèn là kẻ mà Chúa gởi gắm.
1Now I Paul, myself, entreat you by the humility and gentleness of Christ; I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you. 2Yes, I beg you that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence with which I intend to be bold against some, who consider us to be walking according to the flesh. 3For though we walk in the flesh, we don’t wage war according to the flesh; 4for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds, 5throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ; 6and being in readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience will be made full. 7Do you look at things only as they appear in front of your face? If anyone trusts in himself that he is Christ’s, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ’s, so also we are Christ’s. 8For though I should boast somewhat abundantly concerning our authority, (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for casting you down) I will not be disappointed, 9that I may not seem as if I desire to terrify you by my letters. 10For, “His letters”, they say, “are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is despised.” 11Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such are we also in deed when we are present. 12For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding. 13But we will not boast beyond proper limits, but within the boundaries with which God appointed to us, which reach even to you. 14For we don’t stretch ourselves too much, as though we didn’t reach to you. For we came even as far as to you with the Good News of Christ, 15not boasting beyond proper limits in other men’s labors, but having hope that as your faith grows, we will be abundantly enlarged by you in our sphere of influence, 16so as to preach the Good News even to the parts beyond you, not to boast in what someone else has already done. 17But “he who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.” 18For it isn’t he who commends himself who is approved, but whom the Lord commends.
1Voorts ik Paulus zelf bid u, door de zachtmoedigheid en goedertierenheid van Christus, die, tegenwoordig zijnde, wel gering ben onder u, maar afwezend stout ben tegen u; 2Ik bid dan, dat ik, tegenwoordig zijnde, niet stout moge zijn met die vrijmoedigheid, waarmede ik geacht word stoutelijk gehandeld te hebben tegen sommigen, die ons achten, alsof wij naar het vlees wandelden. 3Want wandelende in het vlees, voeren wij den krijg niet naar het vlees; 4Want de wapenen van onzen krijg zijn niet vleselijk, maar krachtig door God, tot nederwerping der sterkten; 5Dewijl wij de overleggingen ter nederwerpen, en alle hoogte, die zich verheft tegen de kennis van God, en alle gedachte gevangen leiden tot de gehoorzaamheid van Christus; 6En gereed hebben, hetgeen dient om te wreken alle ongehoorzaamheid, wanneer uw gehoorzaamheid zal vervuld zijn. 7Ziet gij aan wat voor ogen is? Indien iemand bij zichzelven betrouwt, dat hij van Christus is, die denke dit wederom uit zichzelven, dat gelijkerwijs hij van Christus is, alzo ook wij van Christus zijn. 8Want indien ik ook iets overvloediger zou roemen van onze macht, welke de Heere ons gegeven heeft tot stichting, en niet tot uw nederwerping, zo zal ik niet beschaamd worden; 9Opdat ik niet zou schijnen, alsof ik u door de brieven wilde verschrikken. 10Want de brieven (zeggen zij) zijn wel gewichtig en krachtig; maar de tegenwoordigheid des lichaams is zwak, en de rede is verachtelijk. 11Dezulke bedenke dit, dat hoedanigen wij zijn in het woord door brieven, als wij afwezig zijn, wij ook zodanigen zijn inderdaad, als wij tegenwoordig zijn. 12Want wij durven onszelven niet rekenen of vergelijken met sommigen, die zichzelven prijzen; maar deze verstaan niet, dat zij zichzelven met zichzelven meten, en zichzelven met zichzelven vergelijken. 13Doch wij zullen niet roemen buiten de maat; maar dat wij, naar de maat des regels, welke maat ons God toegedeeld heeft, ook tot u toe zijn gekomen. 14Want wij strekken onszelven niet te wijd uit, als die tot u niet zouden komen; want wij zijn ook gekomen tot u toe, in het Evangelie van Christus; 15Niet roemende buiten de maat in anderer lieden arbeid, maar hebbende hoop, als uw geloof zal gewassen zijn, dat wij onder ulieden overvloediglijk zullen vergroot worden naar onzen regel; 16Om het Evangelie te verkondigen in de plaatsen, die op gene zijde van u gelegen zijn; niet om te roemen in eens anders regel over hetgeen alrede bereid is. 17Doch wie roemt, die roeme in den Heere. 18Want niet die zichzelven prijst, maar dien de Heere prijst, die is beproefd.
