1Basi kuna faida gani kuwa Myahudi? Au kuna thamani gani katika tohara? 2Kuna faida kubwa kwa kila namna! Kwanza kabisa, Wayahudi wamekabidhiwa lile Neno halisi la Mungu. 3Ingekuwaje kama wengine hawakuwa na imani? Je, kutokuamini kwao kungebatilisha uaminifu wa Mungu? 4La hasha! Mungu na aonekane mwenye haki, na kila mwanadamu kuwa mwongo, kama ilivyoandikwa: “Ili uthibitike kuwa wa kweli unaponena, na ukashinde utoapo hukumu.” 5Ikiwa uovu wetu unathibitisha haki ya Mungu waziwazi, tuseme nini basi? Je, Mungu kuileta ghadhabu yake juu yetu ni kwamba yeye si mwenye haki? (Nanena kibinadamu.) 6La hasha! Kama hivyo ndivyo ilivyo, Mungu angehukumuje ulimwengu? 7Mtu aweza kuuliza, “Kama uongo wangu unasaidia kuonyesha kweli ya Mungu na kuzidisha utukufu wake, kwa nini basi mimi nahukumiwa kuwa mwenye dhambi?” 8Nasi kwa nini tusiseme, kama wengine wanavyotusingizia kuwa tunasema, “Tutende maovu ili mema yapate kuja?” Wao wanastahili hukumu yao. 9Tusemeje basi? Je, sisi ni bora kuwaliko wao? La hasha! Kwa maana tumekwisha kuhakikisha kwa vyovyote kwamba Wayahudi na watu wa Mataifa wote wako chini ya nguvu ya dhambi. 10Kama ilivyoandikwa: “Hakuna mwenye haki, hakuna hata mmoja. 11Hakuna hata mmoja mwenye ufahamu, hakuna hata mmoja amtafutaye Mungu. 12Wote wamepotoka, wote wameoza pamoja; hakuna atendaye mema, naam, hakuna hata mmoja.” 13“Makoo yao ni makaburi wazi; kwa ndimi zao wao hufanya udanganyifu.” “Sumu ya nyoka iko midomoni mwao.” 14“Vinywa vyao vimejaa laana na uchungu.” 15“Miguu yao ina haraka kumwaga damu; 16maangamizi na taabu viko katika njia zao, 17wala njia ya amani hawaijui.” 18“Hakuna hofu ya Mungu machoni pao.” 19Basi tunajua ya kwamba chochote sheria inachosema, inawaambia wale walio chini ya sheria ili kila kinywa kinyamazishwe na ulimwengu wote uwajibike kwa Mungu. 20Kwa hiyo hakuna binadamu hata mmoja atakayehesabiwa haki mbele za Mungu kwa matendo ya sheria, kwa maana sheria hutufanya tuitambue dhambi. 21Lakini sasa, haki itokayo kwa Mungu imedhihirishwa pasipo sheria, ambayo Sheria na Manabii wanaishuhudia. 22Haki hii itokayo kwa Mungu hupatikana kwa Yesu Kristo kwa wote wamwaminio. Kwa maana hapo hakuna tofauti, 23kwa kuwa wote wametenda dhambi na kupungukiwa na utukufu wa Mungu, 24wanahesabiwa haki bure kwa neema yake kwa njia ya ukombozi ulio katika Kristo Yesu. 25Yeye ambaye Mungu alimtoa awe dhabihu ya upatanisho kwa njia ya imani katika damu yake. Alifanya hivi ili kuonyesha haki yake, kwa sababu kwa ustahimili wake aliziachilia zile dhambi zilizotangulia kufanywa. 26Alifanya hivyo ili kuonyesha haki yake wakati huu, ili yeye awe mwenye haki na mwenye kumhesabia haki yule anayemwamini Yesu. 27Basi, kujivuna kuko wapi? Kumewekwa mbali. Kwa sheria gani? Je, ni kwa ile ya matendo? La hasha, bali kwa ile sheria ya imani. 28Kwa maana twaona kwamba mwanadamu huhesabiwa haki kwa njia ya imani wala si kwa matendo ya sheria. 29Je, Mungu ni Mungu wa Wayahudi peke yao? Je, yeye si Mungu wa watu wa Mataifa pia? Naam, yeye ni Mungu wa watu wa Mataifa pia. 30Basi kwa kuwa tuna Mungu mmoja tu, atawahesabia haki wale waliotahiriwa kwa imani na wale wasiotahiriwa kwa imani iyo hiyo. 31Je, basi ni kwamba tunaibatilisha sheria kwa imani hii? La, hasha! Badala yake tunaithibitisha sheria.

1Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the profit of circumcision? 2Much in every way! Because first of all, they were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God? 4May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, “That you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment.” 5But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? I speak like men do. 6May it never be! For then how will God judge the world? 7For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? 8Why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), “Let us do evil, that good may come?” Those who say so are justly condemned. 9What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin. 10As it is written, “There is no one righteous; no, not one. 11There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God. 12They have all turned aside. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not so much as one.” 13“Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit.” “The poison of vipers is under their lips”; 14“whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” 15“Their feet are swift to shed blood. 16Destruction and misery are in their ways. 17The way of peace, they haven’t known.” 18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God. 20Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets; 22even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction, 23for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; 24being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; 25whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance; 26to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus. 27Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. 29Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith. 31Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.

Of welk is de nuttigheid der besnijdenis? 2Vele in alle manier; want dit is wel het eerste, dat hun de Woorden Gods zijn toebetrouwd. 3Want wat is het, al zijn sommigen ongelovig geweest? Zal hun ongelovigheid het geloof van God te niet doen? 4Dat zij verre. Doch God zij waarachtig, maar alle mens leugenachtig; gelijk als geschreven is: Opdat Gij gerechtvaardigd wordt in Uw woorden, en overwint, wanneer Gij oordeelt. 5Indien nu onze ongerechtigheid Gods gerechtigheid bevestigt, wat zullen wij zeggen? Is God onrechtvaardig, als Hij toorn over ons brengt? (Ik spreek naar den mens.) 6Dat zij verre, anderszins hoe zal God de wereld oordelen? 7Want indien de waarheid Gods door mijn leugen overvloediger is geworden, tot Zijn heerlijkheid, wat word ik ook nog als een zondaar geoordeeld? 8En zeggen wij niet liever (gelijk wij gelasterd worden, en gelijk sommigen zeggen, dat wij zeggen): Laat ons het kwade doen, opdat het goede daaruit kome? Welker verdoemenis rechtvaardig is. 9Wat dan? Zijn wij uitnemender? Ganselijk niet; want wij hebben te voren beschuldigd beiden Joden en Grieken, dat zij allen onder de zonde zijn; 10Gelijk geschreven is: Er is niemand rechtvaardig, ook niet een; 11Er is niemand, die verstandig is, er is niemand, die God zoekt. 12Allen zijn zij afgeweken, te zamen zijn zij onnut geworden; er is niemand, die goed doet, er is ook niet tot een toe. 13Hun keel is een geopend graf; met hun tongen plegen zij bedrog; slangenvenijn is onder hun lippen. 14Welker mond vol is van vervloeking en bitterheid; 15Hun voeten zijn snel om bloed te vergieten; 16Vernieling en ellendigheid is in hun wegen; 17En den weg des vredes hebben zij niet gekend. 18Er is geen vreze Gods voor hun ogen. 19Wij weten nu, dat al wat de wet zegt, zij dat spreekt tot degenen, die onder de wet zijn; opdat alle mond gestopt worde en de gehele wereld voor God verdoemelijk zij. 20Daarom zal uit de werken der wet geen vlees gerechtvaardigd worden, voor Hem; want door de wet is de kennis der zonde. 21Maar nu is de rechtvaardigheid Gods geopenbaard geworden zonder de wet, hebbende getuigenis van de wet en de profeten: 22Namelijk de rechtvaardigheid Gods door het geloof van Jezus Christus, tot allen, en over allen, die geloven; want er is geen onderscheid. 23Want zij hebben allen gezondigd, en derven de heerlijkheid Gods; 24En worden om niet gerechtvaardigd, uit Zijn genade, door de verlossing, die in Christus Jezus is; 25Welken God voorgesteld heeft tot een verzoening, door het geloof in Zijn bloed, tot een betoning van Zijn rechtvaardigheid, door de vergeving der zonden, die te voren geschied zijn onder de verdraagzaamheid Gods; 26Tot een betoning van Zijn rechtvaardigheid in dezen tegenwoordigen tijd; opdat Hij rechtvaardig zij, en rechtvaardigende dengene, die uit het geloof van Jezus is. 27Waar is dan de roem? Hij is uitgesloten. Door wat wet? Der werken? Neen, maar door de wet des geloofs. 28Wij besluiten dan, dat de mens door het geloof gerechtvaardigd wordt, zonder de werken der wet. 29Is God een God der Joden alleen? en is Hij het niet ook der heidenen? Ja, ook der heidenen; 30Nademaal Hij een enig God is, Die de besnijdenis rechtvaardigen zal uit het geloof, en de voorhuid door het geloof. 31Doen wij dan de wet te niet door het geloof? Dat zij verre; maar wij bevestigen de wet.
