1Maono ya Obadia. Hili ndilo asemalo Bwana Mwenyezi kuhusu Edomu: Tumesikia ujumbe kutoka kwa Bwana: Mjumbe alitumwa kwa mataifa kusema, “Inukeni, twendeni tukapigane vita dhidi yake.” 2“Angalieni, nitawafanya wadogo miongoni mwa mataifa, mtadharauliwa kabisa. 3Kiburi cha moyo wako kimekudanganya, wewe unayeishi katika majabali ya miamba na kufanya makao yako juu, wewe unayejiambia mwenyewe, ‘Ni nani awezaye kunishusha chini?’ 4Ingawa unapaa juu kama tai na kufanya kiota chako kati ya nyota, nitakushusha chini kutoka huko,” asema Bwana. 5“Ikiwa wevi wangekuja kwako, ikiwa wanyangʼanyi wangekujia usiku: Lo! Tazama ni maafa kiasi gani yangekuwa yanakungojea: je, si wangeiba tu kiasi ambacho wangehitaji? Kama wachuma zabibu wangekuja kwako, je, wasingebakiza zabibu chache? 6Lakini tazama jinsi Esau atakavyotekwa, jinsi hazina zake zilizofichwa zitatekwa nyara! 7Wote ulioungana nao watakufukuza hadi mpakani, rafiki zako watakudanganya na kukushinda, wale wanaokula mkate wako watakutegea mtego, lakini hutaweza kuugundua. 8“Katika siku hiyo,” asema Bwana, “je, sitaangamiza watu wenye hekima wa Edomu, watu wenye ufahamu katika milima ya Esau? 9Ee Temani, mashujaa wako watatiwa hofu, kila mmoja katika milima ya Esau ataangushwa chini kwa kuchinjwa. 10Kwa sababu ya jeuri uliyofanya dhidi ya ndugu yako Yakobo, aibu itakufunika; utaangamizwa milele. 11Siku ile ulisimama mbali ukiangalia wakati wageni walipojichukulia utajiri wake na watu wa nchi nyingine walipoingia malango yake wakipiga kura kwa ajili ya Yerusalemu, ulikuwa kama mmoja wao. 12Usingemdharau ndugu yako katika siku ya msiba wake, wala kufurahia juu ya watu wa Yuda katika siku ya maangamizi yao, wala kujigamba sana katika siku ya taabu yao. 13Usingeingia katika malango ya watu wangu katika siku ya maafa yao, wala kuwadharau katika janga lao katika siku ya maafa yao, wala kunyangʼanya mali zao katika siku ya maafa yao. 14Usingengoja kwenye njia panda na kuwaua wakimbizi wao, wala kuwatoa watu wake waliosalia katika siku ya shida yao. 15“Siku ya Bwana iko karibu kwa mataifa yote. Kama ulivyofanya, nawe utafanyiwa vivyo hivyo, matendo yako yatakurudia juu ya kichwa chako. 16Kama vile ulivyokunywa juu ya mlima wangu mtakatifu, vivyo hivyo mataifa yote watakunywa mfululizo, watakunywa na kunywa, nao watatoweka kana kwamba hawajawahi kuwepo. 17Lakini katika Mlima Sayuni kutakuwepo na wale watakaookoka; nao utakuwa mtakatifu, nayo nyumba ya Yakobo itamiliki urithi wake. 18Nyumba ya Yakobo itakuwa moto, na nyumba ya Yosefu itakuwa mwali wa moto; nayo nyumba ya Esau itakuwa bua kavu, nao wataiwasha moto na kuiteketeza. Hakutakuwa na watakaosalimika kutoka nyumba ya Esau.” Bwana amesema. 19Watu kutoka nchi ya Negebu wataikalia milima ya Esau, na watu kutoka miteremko ya vilima watamiliki nchi ya Wafilisti. Watayakalia mashamba ya Efraimu na Samaria, naye Benyamini atamiliki Gileadi. 20Kundi la Waisraeli walioko uhamishoni Kanaani watarudi na kumiliki nchi mpaka Sarepta. Walioko uhamishoni Sefaradi kutoka Yerusalemu watamiliki miji ya Negebu. 21Waokoaji watakwea juu ya Mlima Sayuni kutawala milima ya Esau. Nao ufalme utakuwa wa Bwana.

1The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord Yahweh says about Edom. We have heard news from Yahweh, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, “Arise, and let’s rise up against her in battle. 2Behold, I have made you small among the nations. You are greatly despised. 3The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ 4Though you mount on high as the eagle, and though your nest is set among the stars, I will bring you down from there,” says Yahweh. 5“If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—oh, what disaster awaits you—wouldn’t they only steal until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, wouldn’t they leave some gleaning grapes? 6How Esau will be ransacked! How his hidden treasures are sought out! 7All the men of your alliance have brought you on your way, even to the border. The men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you. Friends who eat your bread lay a snare under you. There is no understanding in him.” 8“Won’t I in that day”, says Yahweh, “destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mountain of Esau? 9Your mighty men, Teman, will be dismayed, to the end that everyone may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter. 10For the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever. 11In the day that you stood on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots for Jerusalem, even you were like one of them. 12But don’t look down on your brother in the day of his disaster, and don’t rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. Don’t speak proudly in the day of distress. 13Don’t enter into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity. Don’t look down on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither seize their wealth on the day of their calamity. 14Don’t stand in the crossroads to cut off those of his who escape. Don’t deliver up those of his who remain in the day of distress. 15For the day of Yahweh is near all the nations! As you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return upon your own head. 16For as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so will all the nations drink continually. Yes, they will drink, swallow down, and will be as though they had not been. 17But in Mount Zion, there will be those who escape, and it will be holy. The house of Jacob will possess their possessions. 18The house of Jacob will be a fire, the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble. They will burn among them, and devour them. There will not be any remaining to the house of Esau.” Indeed, Yahweh has spoken. 19Those of the South will possess the mountain of Esau, and those of the lowland, the Philistines. They will possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria. Benjamin will possess Gilead. 20The captives of this army of the children of Israel, who are among the Canaanites, will possess even to Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, who are in Sepharad, will possess the cities of the Negev. 21Saviors will go up on Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom will be Yahweh’s.

Alzo zegt de Heere HEERE van Edom: Wij hebben een gerucht gehoord van den HEERE, en er is een gezant geschikt onder de heidenen: Staat op, en laat ons opstaan tegen hen ten strijde. 2Ziet, Ik heb u klein gemaakt onder de heidenen, gij zijt zeer veracht. 3De trotsheid uws harten heeft u bedrogen; hij, die daar woont in de kloven der steenrotsen, in zijn hoge woning; die in zijn hart zegt: Wie zou mij ter aarde nederstoten? 4Al verhieft gij u gelijk de arend, en al steldet gij uw nest tussen de sterren, zo zal Ik u van daar nederstoten, spreekt de HEERE. 5Zo er dieven, zo er nachtrovers tot u gekomen waren (hoe zijt gij uitgeroeid!), zouden zij niet gestolen hebben zoveel hun genoeg ware? Zo er wijnlezers tot u gekomen waren, zouden zij niet een nalezing hebben overgelaten? 6Hoe zijn Ezau's goederen nagespeurd, zijn verborgen schatten opgezocht! 7Al uw bondgenoten hebben u tot aan de landpale uitgeleid; uw vredegenoten hebben u bedrogen, zij hebben u overmocht; die uw brood eten zullen een gezwel onder u zetten, er is geen verstand in hem. 8Zal het niet te dien dage zijn, spreekt de HEERE, dat Ik de wijzen uit Edom, en het verstand uit Ezau's gebergte zal doen vergaan? 9Ook zullen uw helden, o Theman! versaagd zijn; opdat een ieder uit Ezau's gebergte door den moord worde uitgeroeid. 10Om het geweld, begaan aan uw broeder Jakob, zal schaamte u bedekken; en gij zult uitgeroeid worden in eeuwigheid. 11Ten dage als gij tegenover stondt, ten dage als de uitlanders zijn heir gevangen voerden, en de vreemden tot zijn poorten introkken, en over Jeruzalem het lot wierpen, waart gij ook als een van hen. 12Toen zoudt gij niet gezien hebben op den dag uws broeders, den dag zijner vervreemding; noch u verblijd hebben over de kinderen van Juda, ten dage huns ondergangs; noch uw mond groot gemaakt hebben, ten dage der benauwdheid; 13Noch ter poorte Mijns volks ingegaan zijn, ten dage huns verderfs; noch gezien hebben, ook gij, op zijn kwaad, ten dage zijns verderfs; noch uw handen uitgestrekt hebben aan zijn heir, ten dage zijns verderfs; 14Noch gestaan hebben op de wegscheiding, om zijn ontkomenen uit te roeien; noch zijn overgeblevenen overgeleverd hebben, ten dage der benauwdheid. 15Want de dag des HEEREN is nabij, over al de heidenen; gelijk als gij gedaan hebt, zal u gedaan worden; uw vergelding zal op uw hoofd wederkeren. 16Want gelijk gijlieden gedronken hebt op den berg Mijner heiligheid, zo zullen al de heidenen geduriglijk drinken; ja, zij zullen drinken en inzwelgen, en zullen zijn alsof zij er niet geweest waren. 17Maar op den berg Sions zal ontkoming zijn, en hij zal een heiligheid zijn; en die van het huis Jakobs zullen hun erfgoederen erfelijk bezitten. 18En Jakobs huis zal een vuur zijn, en Jozefs huis een vlam, en Ezau's huis tot een stoppel; en zij zullen tegen hen ontbranden, en zullen ze verteren, zodat Ezau's huis geen overgeblevene zal hebben; want de HEERE heeft het gesproken. 19En die van het zuiden zullen Ezau's gebergte, en die van de laagte zullen de Filistijnen erfelijk bezitten; ja, zij zullen het veld van Efraim en het veld van Samaria erfelijk bezitten; en Benjamin Gilead. 20En de gevankelijk weggevoerden van dit heir der kinderen Israels, hetgeen der Kanaanieten was, tot Zarfath toe; en de gevankelijk weggevoerden van Jeruzalem, hetgeen in Sefarad is, zij zullen de steden van het zuiden erfelijk bezitten. 21En er zullen heilanden op den berg Sions opkomen, om Ezau's gebergte te richten; en het koninkrijk zal des HEEREN zijn.
