1Bwana akamwambia Mose, 2“Watume baadhi ya watu wakaipeleleze nchi ya Kanaani, ambayo ninawapa Waisraeli. Kutoka kwa kila kabila la baba zao, tuma mmoja wa viongozi wao.” 3Hivyo kwa agizo la Bwana Mose akawatuma kutoka Jangwa la Parani. Wote walikuwa viongozi wa Waisraeli. 4Haya ndiyo majina yao: kutoka kabila la Reubeni, Shamua mwana wa Zakuri; 5kutoka kabila la Simeoni, Shafati mwana wa Hori; 6kutoka kabila la Yuda, Kalebu mwana wa Yefune; 7kutoka kabila la Isakari, Igali mwana wa Yosefu; 8kutoka kabila la Efraimu, Hoshea mwana wa Nuni; 9kutoka kabila la Benyamini, Palti mwana wa Rafu; 10kutoka kabila la Zabuloni, Gadieli mwana wa Sodi, 11kutoka kabila la Manase (kabila la Yosefu), Gadi mwana wa Susi; 12kutoka kabila la Dani, Amieli mwana wa Gemali; 13kutoka kabila la Asheri, Sethuri mwana wa Mikaeli; 14kutoka kabila la Naftali, Nabi mwana wa Wofsi; 15kutoka kabila la Gadi, Geueli mwana wa Maki. 16Haya ndiyo majina ya watu ambao Mose aliwatuma kuipeleleza nchi. (Mose akampa Hoshea mwana wa Nuni jina Yoshua.) 17Mose alipowatuma wakaipeleleze Kanaani, alisema, “Pandeni kupitia Negebu, mwende mpaka nchi ya vilima. 18Mwone nchi ni ya namna gani, na kama watu waishio humo wana nguvu au ni wadhaifu, iwapo ni wachache au wengi. 19Wanaishi katika nchi ya namna gani? Je, ni nzuri au mbaya? Wanaishi katika miji ya namna gani? Je, haina kuta au ngome? 20Ardhi iko aje? Ina rutuba au la? Je, kuna miti ndani yake au la? Jitahidini kadiri mwezavyo kuleta baadhi ya matunda ya nchi.” (Ulikuwa msimu wa kuiva zabibu za kwanza.) 21Hivyo wakapanda na kuipeleleza nchi kutoka Jangwa la Sini hadi Rehobu, kuelekea Lebo-Hamathi. 22Wakapanda kupitia Negebu hadi wakafika Hebroni, mahali ambapo Ahimani, Sheshai na Talmai, wazao wa Anaki, waliishi. (Hebroni ulikuwa umejengwa miaka saba kabla ya mji wa Soani ulioko Misri.) 23Walipofika katika Bonde la Eshkoli, walivunja tawi lililokuwa na kishada kimoja cha zabibu. Wawili wao wakalichukua lile tawi kwenye mti, pamoja na komamanga na tini. 24Eneo lile likaitwa Bonde la Eshkoli kwa sababu ya kile kishada cha zabibu ambacho Waisraeli walikikata huko. 25Mwishoni mwa siku arobaini wakarudi kutoka kuipeleleza nchi. 26Wakarudi kwa Mose, Aroni na jumuiya yote ya Waisraeli huko Kadeshi kwenye Jangwa la Parani. Hapo ndipo walipotoa habari kwao na kwa kusanyiko lote na kuwaonyesha matunda ya hiyo nchi. 27Wakampa Mose taarifa hii: “Tuliingia katika nchi uliyotutuma, nayo inatiririka maziwa na asali! Hili hapa tunda lake. 28Lakini watu wanaoishi huko ni wenye nguvu, na miji yao ina ngome na ni mikubwa sana. Huko tuliona hata wazao wa Anaki. 29Waamaleki wanaishi Negebu; Wahiti, Wayebusi na Waamori wanaishi katika nchi ya vilima; nao Wakanaani wanaishi karibu na bahari na kando ya Yordani.” 30Kisha Kalebu akawanyamazisha watu mbele ya Mose na kusema, “Imetupasa kupanda na kuimiliki nchi, kwa maana hakika tunaweza kufanya hivyo.” 31Lakini watu waliokuwa wamepanda pamoja naye wakasema, “Hatuwezi kuwashambulia wale watu; wana nguvu kutuliko sisi.” 32Wakaeneza taarifa mbaya miongoni mwa Waisraeli kuhusu nchi waliyoipeleleza. Wakasema, “Nchi tuliyoipeleleza hula watu waishio ndani yake. Watu wote tuliowaona huko ni majitu. 33Tuliwaona Wanefili huko (wazao wa Anaki wanatokana na Wanefili.) Tulijiona kama panzi machoni petu wenyewe, nao ndivyo walivyotuona.”

1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them.” 3Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Yahweh. All of them were men who were heads of the children of Israel. 4These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. 5Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. 6Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 7Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. 8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. 9Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. 10Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. 11Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. 12Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. 13Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. 14Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. 15Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. 17Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country. 18See the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; 19and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; 20and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes. 21So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath. 22They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. 24That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there. 25They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26They went and came to Moses, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land. 27They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there. 29Amalek dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwell in the hill country. The Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along the side of the Jordan.” 30Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it!” 31But the men who went up with him said, “We aren’t able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.” 32They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature. 33There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim. We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”

1En de HEERE sprak tot Mozes, zeggende: 2Zend u mannen uit: die het land Kanaan verspieden, hetwelk Ik den kinderen Israels geven zal; van elken stam zijner vaderen zult gijlieden een man zenden, zijnde ieder een overste onder hen. 3Mozes dan zond hen uit de woestijn van Paran, naar den mond des HEEREN; al die mannen waren hoofden der kinderen Israels. 4En dit zijn hun namen: van den stam van Ruben, Sammua, de zoon van Zaccur. 5Van de stam van Simeon, Safat, de zoon van Hori. 6Van de stam van Juda, Kaleb, de zoon van Jefunne. 7Van de stam van Issaschar, Jigeal, de zoon van Jozef. 8Van de stam van Efraim, Hosea, de zoon van Nun. 9Van de stam van Benjamin, Palti, de zoon van Rafu. 10Van de stam van Zebulon, Gaddiel, de zoon van Sodi. 11Van de stam van Jozef, voor den stam van Manasse, Gaddi, de zoon van Susi. 12Van de stam van Dan, Ammiel, de zoon van Gemalli. 13Van de stam van Aser, Sethur, de zoon van Michael. 14Van de stam van Nafthali, Nachbi, de zoon van Wofsi. 15Van de stam van Gad, Guel, de zoon van Machi. 16Dit zijn de namen der mannen, die Mozes zond, om dat land te verspieden; en Mozes noemde Hosea, den zoon van Nun, Jozua. 17Mozes dan zond hen, om het land Kanaan te verspieden; en hij zeide tot hen: Trekt dit henen op tegen het zuiden, en klimt op het gebergte; 18En beziet het land, hoedanig het zij, en het volk, dat daarin woont, of het sterk zij of zwak, of het weinig zij of veel; 19En hoedanig het land zij, waarin hetzelve woont, of het goed zij of kwaad; en hoedanig de steden zijn, in dewelke hetzelve woont, of in legers, of in sterkten; 20Ook hoedanig het land zij, of het vet zij of mager, of er bomen in zijn of niet; en versterkt u, en neemt van de vrucht des lands. Die dagen nu waren de dagen der eerste vruchten van de wijndruiven. 21Alzo trokken zij op, en verspiedden het land, van de woestijn Zin af tot Rechob toe, waar men gaat naar Hamath. 22En zij trokken op in het zuiden, en kwamen tot Hebron toe en daar waren Ahiman, Sesai en Talmai, kinderen van Enak; Hebron nu was zeven jaren gebouwd voor Zoan in Egypte. 23Daarna kwamen zij tot het dal Eskol, en sneden van daar een rank af met een tros wijndruiven, dien zij droegen met tweeen, op een draagstok; ook van de granaatappelen en van de vijgen. 24Diezelve plaats noemde men het dal Eskol, ter oorzake van den tros, dien de kinderen Israels van daar afgesneden hadden. 25Daarna keerden zij weder van het verspieden des lands, ten einde van veertig dagen. 26En zij gingen heen, en kwamen tot Mozes en tot Aaron, en tot de gehele vergadering der kinderen Israels, in de woestijn Paran, naar Kades; en brachten bescheid weder aan hen, en aan de gehele vergadering, en lieten hen de vrucht des lands zien. 27En zij vertelden hem, en zeiden: Wij zijn gekomen tot dat land, waarheen gij ons gezonden hebt; en voorwaar, het is van melk en honig vloeiende, en dit is zijn vrucht. 28Behalve dat het een sterk volk is, hetwelk in dat land woont, en de steden zijn vast, en zeer groot; en ook hebben wij daar kinderen van Enak gezien. 29De Amalekieten wonen in het land van het zuiden; maar de Hethieten, en de Jebusieten, en de Amorieten wonen op het gebergte; en de Kanaanieten wonen aan de zee, en aan den oever van de Jordaan. 30Toen stilde Kaleb het volk voor Mozes, en zeide: Laat ons vrijmoedig optrekken, en dat erfelijk bezitten; want wij zullen dat voorzeker overweldigen! 31Maar de mannen, die met hem opgetrokken waren, zeiden: Wij zullen tot dat volk niet kunnen optrekken, want het is sterker dan wij. 32Alzo brachten zij een kwaad gerucht voort van het land, dat zij verspied hadden, aan de kinderen Israels, zeggende: Dat land, door hetwelk wij doorgegaan zijn, om het te verspieden, is een land, dat zijn inwoners verteert; en al het volk, hetwelk wij in het midden van hetzelve gezien hebben, zijn mannen van grote lengte. 33Wij hebben ook daar de reuzen gezien, en de kinderen van Enak, van de reuzen; en wij waren als sprinkhanen in onze ogen, alzo waren wij ook in hun ogen.
