1Passadas estas coisas, aconteceu que os filhos de Moabe e de Amom, e com eles outros dos amonitas, vieram contra Josafá à guerra. 2E acudiram, e deram aviso a Josafá, dizendo: Contra ti vem uma grande multidão da outra parte do mar, e da Síria; e eis que eles estão em Hazazom-Tamar, que é En-Gedi. 3Então ele teve temor; e pôs Josafá seu rosto para consultar ao SENHOR, e fez apregoar jejum a todo Judá. 4E juntaram-se os de Judá para pedir socorro ao SENHOR: e também de todas as cidades de Judá vieram a pedir ao SENHOR. 5Pôs-se então Josafá em pé na reunião de Judá e de Jerusalém, na casa do SENHOR, diante do átrio novo; 6E disse: o SENHOR Deus de nossos pais, não és tu Deus nos céus, e te ensenhoreias em todos os reinos das nações? não está em tua mão tal força e potência, que não há quem te resista? 7Deus nosso, não lançaste tu os moradores desta terra diante de teu povo Israel, e a deste à semente de Abraão tua amigo para sempre? 8E eles habitaram nela, e te edificaram nela santuário a teu nome, dizendo: 9Se mal vier sobre nós, ou espada de castigo, ou pestilência, ou fome, nos apresentaremos diante desta casa, e diante de ti, (porque teu nome está em esta casa,) e de nossas tribulações clamaremos a ti, e tu nos ouvirás e salvarás. 10Agora, pois, eis que os filhos de Amom e de Moabe, e os do monte de Seir, à terra dos quais nem quiseste que passasse Israel quando vinham da terra do Egito, mas sim que se afastassem deles, e não os destruíssem; 11Eis que eles nos dão o pago, vindo a lançar-nos de tua herdade, que tu nos deste a possuir. 12Ó Deus nosso! Não os julgarás tu? Porque em nós não há força contra tão grande multidão que vem contra nós: não sabemos o que devemos fazer, mas a ti voltamos nossos olhos. 13E todo Judá estava em pé diante do SENHOR, com seus meninos, e suas mulheres, e seus filhos. 14E estava ali Jaaziel filho de Zacarias, filho de Benaia, filho de Jeiel, filho de Matanias, levita dos filhos de Asafe, sobre o qual veio o espírito do SENHOR em meio da reunião; 15E disse: Ouvi, Judá todo, e vós moradores de Jerusalém, e tu, rei Josafá. o SENHOR vos diz assim: Não temais nem vos amedronteis diante desta tão grande multidão; porque não é vossa a guerra, mas sim de Deus. 16Amanhã descereis contra eles: eis que eles subirão pela encosta de Ziz, e os achareis junto ao ribeiro, antes do deserto de Jeruel. 17Não haverá para que vós luteis em este caso: parai-vos, ficai parados, e vede a salvação do SENHOR convosco. Ó Judá e Jerusalém, não temais nem desmaieis; saí amanhã contra eles, que o SENHOR será convosco. 18Então Josafá se inclinou rosto por terra, e também todo Judá e os moradores de Jerusalém se prostraram diante do SENHOR, e adoraram ao SENHOR. 19E levantaram-se os levitas dos filhos de Coate e dos filhos de Corá, para louvar ao SENHOR o Deus de Israel a grande e alta voz. 20E quando se levantaram pela manhã, saíram pelo deserto de Tecoa. E enquanto eles saíam, Josafá estando em pé, disse: Ouvi-me, Judá e moradores de Jerusalém. Crede no SENHOR vosso Deus, e sereis seguros; crede em seus profetas, e sereis prosperados. 21E havido conselho com o povo, pôs a alguns que cantassem ao SENHOR, e louvassem na formosura da santidade, enquanto que saía a gente armada, e dissessem: Glorificai ao SENHOR, porque sua misericórdia é para sempre. 22E quando começaram com clamor e com louvor, pôs o SENHOR contra os filhos de Amom, de Moabe, e do monte de Seir, as emboscadas deles mesmos que vinham contra Judá, e mataram-se os uns aos outros: 23Pois os filhos de Amom e Moabe se levantaram contra os do monte de Seir, para matá-los e destruí-los; e quando houveram acabado aos do monte de Seir, cada qual ajudou à destruição de seu companheiro. 24E logo que veio Judá ao posto de observação do deserto, olharam até a multidão; mas eis que jaziam eles em terra mortos, que ninguém havia escapado. 25Vindo então Josafá e seu povo a despojá-los, acharam neles muitas riquezas entre os cadáveres, assim vestidos como preciosos utensílios, os quais tomaram para si, tantos, que não os podiam levar: três dias durou o despojo, porque era muito. 26E ao quarto dia se juntaram no vale de Beraca; porque ali bendisseram ao SENHOR, e por isto chamaram o nome daquele lugar o vale de Beraca, até hoje. 27E todo Judá e os de Jerusalém, e Josafá à cabeça deles, voltaram a Jerusalém com alegria, porque o SENHOR lhes havia dado alegria de seus inimigos. 28E vieram a Jerusalém com saltérios, harpas, e buzinas, à casa do SENHOR. 29E foi o pavor de Deus sobre todos os reinos daquela terra, quando ouviram que o SENHOR havia pelejado contra os inimigos de Israel. 30E o reino de Josafá teve repouso; porque seu Deus lhe deu repouso de todas partes. 31Assim reinou Josafá sobre Judá: de trinta e cinco anos era quando começou a reinar, e reinou vinte e cinco anos em Jerusalém. O nome de sua mãe foi Azuba, filha de Sili. 32E andou no caminho de Asa seu pai, sem desviar-se dele, fazendo o que era correto aos olhos do SENHOR. 33Com tudo isso os altos não foram tirados; que o povo ainda não havia preparado seu coração ao Deus de seus pais. 34Os demais dos feitos de Josafá, primeiros e últimos, eis que estão escritos nas palavras de Jeú filho de Hanani, do qual é feita menção no livro dos reis de Israel. 35Passadas estas coisas, Josafá rei de Judá estabeleceu amizade com Acazias rei de Israel, o qual foi dado à impiedade: 36E fez com ele companhia para preparar navios que fossem a Társis; e construíram os navios em Eziom-Geber. 37Então Eliézer filho de Dodava de Maressa, profetizou contra Josafá, dizendo: Por quanto fizeste companhia com Acazias, o SENHOR destruirá tuas obras. E os navios se romperam, e não puderam ir a Társis.
1After this, the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2Then some came who told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea from Syria. Behold, they are in Hazazon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). 3Jehoshaphat was alarmed, and set himself to seek to Yahweh. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4Judah gathered themselves together, to seek help from Yahweh. They came out of all the cities of Judah to seek Yahweh. 5Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in Yahweh’s house, before the new court; 6and he said, “Yahweh, the God of our fathers, aren’t you God in heaven? Aren’t you ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in your hand, so that no one is able to withstand you. 7Didn’t you, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it to the seed of Abraham your friend forever? 8They lived in it, and have built you a sanctuary in it for your name, saying, 9‘If evil comes on us—the sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this house, and before you, (for your name is in this house), and cry to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’ 10Now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and didn’t destroy them; 11behold, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit. 12Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us; neither know we what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 13All Judah stood before Yahweh, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly; 15and he said, “Listen, all Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you king Jehoshaphat. Thus says Yahweh to you, ‘Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz. You shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel. 17You will not need to fight this battle. Set yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Go out against them tomorrow, for Yahweh is with you.’” 18Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before Yahweh, worshiping Yahweh. 19The Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise Yahweh, the God of Israel, with an exceeding loud voice. 20They rose early in the morning, and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in Yahweh your God, so you shall be established! Believe his prophets, so you shall prosper.” 21When he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who should sing to Yahweh, and give praise in holy array, as they went out before the army, and say, Give thanks to Yahweh; for his loving kindness endures forever. 22When they began to sing and to praise, Yahweh set ambushers against the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were struck. 23For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, utterly to kill and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, everyone helped to destroy another. 24When Judah came to the place overlooking the wilderness, they looked at the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were no one who escaped. 25When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their plunder, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in taking the plunder, it was so much. 26On the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Beracah; for there they blessed Yahweh: therefore the name of that place was called The valley of Beracah to this day. 27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in their forefront, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for Yahweh had made them to rejoice over their enemies. 28They came to Jerusalem with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets to Yahweh’s house. 29The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the countries, when they heard that Yahweh fought against the enemies of Israel. 30So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet; for his God gave him rest all around. 31Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32He walked in the way of Asa his father, and didn’t turn aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh. 33However the high places were not taken away; neither as yet had the people set their hearts to the God of their fathers. 34Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is inserted in the book of the kings of Israel. 35After this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel. The same did very wickedly: 36and he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made the ships in Ezion Geber. 37Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you have joined yourself with Ahaziah, Yahweh has destroyed your works.” The ships were broken, so that they were not able to go to Tarshish.

Ja, Gij zijt de Heerser over alle koninkrijken der heidenen; en in Uw hand is kracht en sterkte, zodat niemand zich tegen U stellen kan. 7Hebt Gij niet, onze God, de inwoners dezes lands van voor het aangezicht van Uw volk Israel verdreven, en dat aan het zaad van Abraham, Uw liefhebber, tot in eeuwigheid gegeven? 8Zij nu hebben daarin gewoond, en zij hebben U daarin een heiligdom gebouwd voor Uw Naam, zeggende: 9Indien over ons enig kwaad komt, het zwaard des oordeels, of pestilentie, of honger, wij zullen voor dit huis, en voor Uw aangezicht staan, dewijl Uw Naam in dit huis is; en wij zullen uit onze benauwdheid tot U roepen, en Gij zult verhoren en verlossen. 10En nu, zie de kinderen Ammons, en Moab, en die van het gebergte Seir, door dewelken Gij Israel niet toeliet te trekken, als zij uit Egypteland togen, maar zij weken van hen, en verdelgden hen niet; 11Zie dan, zij vergelden het ons, komende om ons uit Uw erve, die Gij ons te erven gegeven hebt, te verdrijven. 12O, onze God, zult Gij geen recht tegen hen oefenen? want in ons is geen kracht tegen deze grote menigte, die tegen ons komt, en wij weten niet, wat wij doen zullen; maar onze ogen zijn op U. 13En gans Juda stond voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, ook hun kinderkens, hun vrouwen en hun zonen. 14Toen kwam de Geest des HEEREN in het midden der gemeente, op Jahaziel, den zoon van Zecharja, den zoon van Benaja, den zoon van Jehiel, den zoon van Matthanja, den Leviet, uit de zonen van Asaf; 15En hij zeide: Merkt op, geheel Juda, en gij, inwoners van Jeruzalem, en gij, koning Josafat! Vreest niet, en ontzet u niet, gaat morgen uit, hun tegen, want de HEERE zal met u wezen. 18Toen neigde zich Josafat met het aangezicht ter aarde; en gans Juda en de inwoners van Jeruzalem vielen neder voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, aanbiddende den HEERE. 19En de Levieten uit de kinderen der Kahathieten, en uit de kinderen der Korahieten, stonden op, om den HEERE, den God Israels, met luider stem ten hoogste te prijzen. 20En zij maakten zich des morgens vroeg op, en togen uit naar de woestijn van Thekoa; en als zij uittogen, stond Josafat en zeide: Hoort mij, o Juda, en gij, inwoners van Jeruzalem! Gelooft in den HEERE, uw God, zo zult gij bevestigd worden; gelooft aan Zijn profeten, en gij zult voorspoedig zijn. 21Hij nu beraadslaagde zich met het volk, en hij stelde den HEERE zangers, die de heilige Majesteit prijzen zouden, voor de toegerusten uitgaande en zeggende: Looft den HEERE, want Zijn goedertierenheid is tot in eeuwigheid! 22Ter tijd nu, als aanhieven met een vreugdegeroep en lofzang, stelde de HEERE achterlagen tegen de kinderen Ammons, Moab, en die van het gebergte Seir, die tegen Juda gekomen waren; en zij werden geslagen. 23Want de kinderen Ammons en Moab stonden op tegen de inwoners van het gebergte Seir, om te verbannen en te verdelgen; en als zij met de inwoners van Seir een einde gemaakt hadden, hielpen zij de een den ander ten verderve. 24Als nu Juda tot den wachttoren in de woestijn gekomen was, wendden zij zich naar de menigte; en ziet, het waren dode lichamen, liggende op de aarde, en niemand was ontkomen. 25Josafat nu en zijn volk kwamen, om hun buit te roven, en zij vonden bij hen in menigte, zowel have en dode lichamen, als kostelijk gereedschap, en namen voor zich weg, totdat zij niet meer dragen konden; en zij roofden den buit drie dagen, want dies was veel. 26En op den vierden dag vergaderden zij zich in het dal van Beracha, want daar loofden zij den HEERE; daarom noemden zij den naam dierzelver plaats het dal van Beracha, tot op dezen dag. 27Daarna keerden alle mannen van Juda en Jeruzalem weder, en Josafat in de voorspitse van hen, om wederom met blijdschap tot Jeruzalem te komen; want de HEERE had hen verblijd over hun vijanden. 28En zij kwamen te Jeruzalem, met luiten, en met harpen, en met trompetten, tot het huis des HEEREN. 29En er werd een verschrikking Gods over alle koninkrijken dier landen, als zij hoorden, dat de HEERE tegen de vijanden van Israel gestreden had. 30Alzo was het koninkrijk van Josafat stil; en zijn God gaf hem rust rondom henen. 31Zo regeerde Josafat over Juda; hij was vijf en dertig jaren oud, als hij koning werd, en hij regeerde vijf en twintig jaren te Jeruzalem; en de naam zijner moeder was Azuba, een dochter van Silhi. 32En hij wandelde in den weg van zijn vader Asa, en hij week daarvan niet af, doende dat recht was in de ogen des HEEREN. 33Evenwel werden de hoogten niet weggenomen; want het volk had nog zijn hart niet geschikt tot den God zijner vaderen. 34Het overige nu der geschiedenissen van Josafat, de eerste en de laatste, ziet, die zijn geschreven in de geschiedenissen van Jehu, den zoon van Hanani, die men hem optekenen deed in het boek der koningen van Israel. 35Doch na dezen vergezelschapte zich Josafat, de koning van Juda, met Ahazia, den koning van Israel; die handelde goddelooslijk in zijn doen. 36En hij vergezelschapte zich met hem, om schepen te maken, om naar Tharsis te gaan; en zij maakten de schepen te Ezeon-Geber. 37Maar Eliezer, de zoon van Dodava, van Maresa, profeteerde tegen Josafat, zeggende: Omdat gij u met Ahazia vergezelschapt hebt, heeft de HEERE uw werken verscheurd. Alzo werden de schepen verbroken, dat zij niet konden naar Tharsis gaan.
