1Paolo, servitore di Dio e apostolo di Gesù Cristo per la fede degli eletti di Dio e la conoscenza della verità che è secondo pietà, 2nella speranza della vita eterna la quale Iddio, che non può mentire, promise avanti i secoli, 3manifestando poi nei suoi propri tempi la sua parola mediante la predicazione che è stata a me affidata per mandato di Dio, nostro Salvatore, 4a Tito, mio vero figliuolo secondo la fede che ci è comune, grazia e pace da Dio Padre e da Cristo Gesù, nostro Salvatore. 5Per questa ragione t’ho lasciato in Creta: perché tu dia ordine alle cose che rimangono a fare, e costituisca degli anziani per ogni città, come t’ho ordinato; 6quando si trovi chi sia irreprensibile, marito d’una sola moglie, avente figliuoli fedeli, che non sieno accusati di dissolutezza né insubordinati. 7Poiché il vescovo bisogna che sia irreprensibile, come economo di Dio; non arrogante, non iracondo, non dedito al vino, non manesco, non cupido di disonesto guadagno, 8ma ospitale, amante del bene, assennato, giusto, santo, temperante, 9attaccato alla fedel Parola quale gli è stata insegnata, onde sia capace d’esortare nella sana dottrina e di convincere i contradittori. 10Poiché vi son molti ribelli, cianciatori e seduttori di menti, specialmente fra quelli della circoncisione, ai quali bisogna turare la bocca; 11uomini che sovvertono le case intere, insegnando cose che non dovrebbero, per amor di disonesto guadagno. 12Uno dei loro, un loro proprio profeta, disse: "I Cretesi son sempre bugiardi, male bestie, ventri pigri". 13Questa testimonianza è verace. Riprendili perciò severamente, affinché siano sani nella fede, 14non dando retta a favole giudaiche né a comandamenti d’uomini che voltan le spalle alla verità. 15Tutto è puro per quelli che son puri; ma per i contaminati ed increduli niente è puro; anzi, tanto la mente che la coscienza loro son contaminate. 16Fanno professione di conoscere Iddio; ma lo rinnegano con le loro opere, essendo abominevoli, e ribelli, e incapaci di qualsiasi opera buona.
1Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s chosen ones, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2in hope of eternal life, which God, who can’t lie, promised before time began; 3but in his own time revealed his word in the message with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior; 4to Titus, my true child according to a common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. 5I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking, and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you; 6if anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, who are not accused of loose or unruly behavior. 7For the overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-pleasing, not easily angered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain; 8but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober minded, fair, holy, self-controlled; 9holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him. 10For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake. 12One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons.” 13This testimony is true. For this cause, reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. 15To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. 16They profess that they know God, but by their works they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.
1Paulus, een dienstknecht Gods, en een apostel van Jezus Christus, naar het geloof der uitverkorenen Gods, en de kennis der waarheid, die naar de godzaligheid is; 2In de hoop des eeuwigen levens, welke God, Die niet liegen kan, beloofd heeft, voor de tijden der eeuwen, maar geopenbaard heeft te Zijner tijd; 3Namelijk Zijn Woord, door de prediking, die mij toebetrouwd is, naar het bevel van God, onze Zaligmaker; aan Titus, mijn oprechte zoon, naar het gemeen geloof: 4Genade, barmhartigheid, vrede zij u van God den Vader, en den Heere Jezus Christus, onzen Zaligmaker. 5Om die oorzaak heb ik u te Kreta gelaten, opdat gij, hetgeen nog ontbrak, voorts zoudt te recht brengen, en dat gij van stad tot stad zoudt ouderlingen stellen, gelijk ik u bevolen heb: 6Indien iemand onberispelijk is, ener vrouwe man, gelovige kinderen hebbende, die niet te beschuldigen zijn van overdadigheid, of ongehoorzaam zijn. 7Want een opziener moet onberispelijk zijn, als een huisverzorger Gods, niet eigenzinnig, niet genegen tot toornigheid, niet genegen tot den wijn, geen smijter, geen vuil-gewinzoeker; 8Maar die gaarne herbergt, die de goeden liefheeft, matig, rechtvaardig, heilig, kuis; 9Die vasthoudt aan het getrouwe woord, dat naar de leer is, opdat hij machtig zij, beide om te vermanen door de gezonde leer, en om de tegensprekers te wederleggen. 10Want er zijn ook vele ongeregelden, ijdelheidsprekers en verleiders van zinnen, inzonderheid die uit de besnijdenis zijn; 11Welken men moet den mond stoppen, die gehele huizen verkeren, lerende wat niet behoort, om vuil gewins wil. 12Een uit hen, zijnde hun eigen profeet, heeft gezegd: De Kretensen zijn altijd leugenachtig, kwade beesten, luie buiken. 13Deze getuigenis is waar. Daarom bestraf hen scherpelijk, opdat zij gezond mogen zijn in het geloof. 14En zich niet begeven tot Joodse fabelen, en geboden der mensen, die hen van de waarheid afkeren. 15Alle dingen zijn wel rein den reinen, maar den bevlekten en ongelovigen is geen ding rein, maar beide hun verstand en geweten zijn bevlekt. 16Zij belijden, dat zij God kennen, maar zij verloochenen Hem met de werken, alzo zij gruwelijk zijn en ongehoorzaam, en tot alle goed werk ongeschikt.
