1Or Jefte, il Galaadita, era un uomo forte e valoroso, figliuolo di una meretrice, e avea Galaad per padre. 2La moglie di Galaad gli avea dato de’ figliuoli; e quando questi figliuoli della moglie furono grandi, cacciarono Jefte e gli dissero: "Tu non avrai eredità in casa di nostro padre, perché sei figliuolo d’un’altra donna". 3E Jefte se ne fuggì lungi dai suoi fratelli e si stabilì nel paese di Tob. Degli uomini da nulla si raccolsero attorno a Jefte, e facevano delle incursioni con lui. 4Qualche tempo dopo avvenne che i figliuoli di Ammon mossero guerra a Israele. 5E come i figliuoli di Ammon movean guerra a Israele, gli anziani di Galaad andarono a cercare Jefte nel paese di Tob. 6E dissero a Jefte: "Vieni, sii nostro capitano, e combatteremo contro i figliuoli di Ammon". 7Ma Jefte rispose agli anziani di Galaad: "Non m’avete voi odiato e cacciato dalla casa di mio padre? Perché venite da me ora che siete nell’angustia?" 8E gli anziani di Galaad dissero a Jefte: "Appunto per questo torniamo ora da te, onde tu venga con noi e combatta contro i figliuoli di Ammon e tu sia capo di noi tutti abitanti di Galaad". 9Jefte rispose agli anziani di Galaad: "Se mi riconducete da voi per combattere contro i figliuoli di Ammon, e l’Eterno li dà in mio potere, io sarò vostro capo". 10E gli anziani di Galaad dissero a Jefte: "L’Eterno sia testimone fra noi, e ci punisca se non facciamo quello che hai detto". 11Jefte dunque andò con gli anziani di Galaad; il popolo lo costituì suo capo e condottiero, e Jefte ripeté davanti all’Eterno, a Mitspa, tutte le parole che avea dette prima. 12Poi Jefte inviò de’ messi al re de’ figliuoli di Ammon per dirgli: "Che questione c’è fra me e te che tu venga contro di me per far guerra al mio paese?" 13E il re de’ figliuoli di Ammon rispose ai messi di Jefte: "Mi son mosso perché, quando Israele salì dall’Egitto, s’impadronì del mio paese, dall’Arnon fino allo Jabbok e al Giordano; rendimelo all’amichevole". 14Jefte inviò di nuovo de’ messi al re de’ figliuoli di Ammon per dirgli: 15"Così dice Jefte: Israele non s’impadronì del paese di Moab, né del paese de’ figliuoli di Ammon; 16ma, quando Israele salì dall’Egitto e attraversò il deserto fino al mar Rosso e giunse a Kades, 17inviò de’ messi al re di Edom per dirgli: Ti prego, lasciami passare per il tuo paese; ma il re di Edom non acconsentì. Mandò anche al re di Moab, il quale pure rifiutò; e Israele rimase a Kades. 18Poi camminò per il deserto, fece il giro del paese di Edom e del paese di Moab, giunse a oriente del paese di Moab, e si accampò di là dall’Arnon, senza entrare nel territorio di Moab; perché l’Arnon segna il confine di Moab. 19E Israele inviò de’ messi a Sihon, re degli Amorei, re di Heshbon, e gli fe’ dire: Ti preghiamo lasciaci passare dal tuo paese, per arrivare al nostro. 20Ma Sihon non si fidò d’Israele per permettergli di passare per il suo territorio; anzi Sihon radunò tutta la sua gente, s’accampò a Jahats, e combatté contro Israele. 21E l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, diede Sihon e tutta la sua gente nelle mani d’Israele, che li sconfisse; così Israele conquistò tutto il paese degli Amorei, che abitavano quella contrada; 22conquistò tutto il territorio degli Amorei, dall’Arnon allo Jabbok e dal deserto al Giordano. 23E ora che l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, ha cacciato gli Amorei d’innanzi a Israele, ch’è il suo popolo, dovresti tu possedere il loro paese? 24Non possiedi tu quello che Kemosh, il tuo dio, t’ha fatto possedere? Così anche noi possederemo il paese di quelli che l’Eterno ha cacciati d’innanzi a noi. 25Sei tu forse da più di Balak, figliuolo di Tsippor, re di Moab? Mosse egli querela ad Israele, o gli fece egli guerra? 26Son trecent’anni che Israele abita ad Heshbon e nelle città del suo territorio, ad Aroer e nelle città del suo territorio, e in tutte le città lungo l’Arnon; perché non gliele avete tolte durante questo tempo? 27E io non t’ho offeso, e tu agisci male verso di me, movendomi guerra. L’Eterno, il giudice, giudichi oggi tra i figliuoli d’Israele e i figliuoli di Ammon!" 28Ma il re de’ figliuoli di Ammon non diede ascolto alle parole che Jefte gli avea fatto dire. 29Allora lo spirito dell’Eterno venne su Jefte, che attraversò Galaad e Manasse, passò a Mitspa di Galaad, e da Mitspa di Galaad mosse contro i figliuoli di Ammon. 30E Jefte fece un voto all’Eterno, e disse: "Se tu mi dài nelle mani i figliuoli di Ammon, 31la persona che uscirà dalle porte di casa mia per venirmi incontro quando tornerò vittorioso dai figliuoli di Ammon, sarà dell’Eterno, e io l’offrirò in olocausto". 32E Jefte marciò contro i figliuoli di Ammon per far loro guerra, e l’Eterno glieli diede nelle mani. 33E egli inflisse loro una grandissima sconfitta, da Aroer fin verso Minnith, prendendo loro venti città, e fino ad Abel-Keramim. Così i figliuoli di Ammon furono umiliati dinanzi ai figliuoli d’Israele. 34Or Jefte se ne tornò a Mitspa, a casa sua; ed ecco uscirgli incontro la sua figliuola, con timpani e danze. Era l’unica sua figlia: non aveva altri figliuoli né altre figliuole. 35E, come la vide, si stracciò le vesti, e disse: "Ah, figlia mia! tu mi accasci, tu mi accasci; tu sei fra quelli che mi conturbano! poiché io ho dato parola all’Eterno, e non posso ritrarmene". 36Ella gli disse: "Padre mio, se hai dato parola all’Eterno, fa’ di me secondo quel che hai proferito, giacché l’Eterno t’ha dato di far vendetta de’ figliuoli di Ammon, tuoi nemici". 37Poi disse a suo padre: "Mi sia concesso questo: lasciami libera per due mesi, ond’io vada e scenda per i monti a piangere la mia verginità con le mie compagne". 38Egli le rispose: "Va’!" e la lasciò andare per due mesi. Ed ella se ne andò con le sue compagne, e pianse sui monti la sua verginità. 39Alla fine dei due mesi, ella tornò da suo padre; ed egli fece di lei quello che avea promesso con voto. Ella non avea conosciuto uomo. Di qui venne in Israele 40l’usanza che le figliuole d’Israele vanno tutti gli anni a celebrar la figliuola di Jefte, il Galaadita, per quattro giorni.
1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute: and Gilead became the father of Jephthah. 2Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said to him, “You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman.” 3Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him. 4After a while, the children of Ammon made war against Israel. 5It was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob; 6and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.” 7Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?” 8The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” 9Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh deliver them before me, shall I be your head?” 10The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh shall be witness between us; surely according to your word so will we do.” 11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah. 12Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?” 13The king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan: now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.” 14Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon; 15and he said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon, 16but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh; 17then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh. 18Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab. 19Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’ 20But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 21Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. 22They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan. 23So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them? 24Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess. 25Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them? 26While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn’t you recover them within that time? 27I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. Yahweh, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.” 28However the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him. 29Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon. 30Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand, 31then it shall be, that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.” 32So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand. 33He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. 34Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter. 35When he saw her, he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.” 36She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.” 37She said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.” 38He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains. 39At the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. She was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel, 40that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

En Jeftha sprak al zijn woorden voor het aangezicht des HEEREN te Mizpa. 12Voorts zond Jeftha boden tot den koning der kinderen Ammons, zeggende: Wat hebben ik en gij met elkander te doen, dat gij tot mij gekomen zijt, om tegen mijn land te krijgen? 13En de koning der kinderen Ammons zeide tot de boden van Jeftha: Omdat Israel, als hij uit Egypte optoog, mijn land genomen heeft, van de Arnon af tot aan de Jabbok, en tot aan de Jordaan; zo geef mij dat nu weder met vrede. 14Maar Jeftha voer wijders voort, en zond boden tot den koning der kinderen Ammons. 15En hij zeide tot hem: Zo zegt Jeftha: Israel heeft het land der Moabieten, en het land der kinderen Ammons niet genomen; 16Want als zij uit Egypte optogen, zo wandelde Israel door de woestijn tot aan de Schelfzee, en kwam te Kades. 17En Israel zond boden tot de koning der Edomieten, zeggende: Laat mij toch door uw land doortrekken; maar de koning der Edomieten gaf geen gehoor. En hij zond ook tot de koning der Moabieten, die ook niet wilde. Alzo bleef Israel in Kades. 18Daarna wandelde hij in de woestijn, en toog om het land der Edomieten en het land der Moabieten, en kwam van den opgang der zon aan het land der Moabieten, en zij legerden zich op gene zijde van de Arnon; maar zij kwamen niet binnen de landpale der Moabieten; want de Arnon is de landpale der Moabieten. 19Maar Israel zond boden tot Sihon, den koning der Amorieten, koning van Hesbon, en Israel zeide tot hem: Laat ons toch door uw land doortrekken tot aan mijn plaats. 20Doch Sihon betrouwde Israel niet door zijn landpale door te trekken; maar Sihon verzamelde al zijn volk, en zij legerden zich te Jaza; en hij streed tegen Israel. 21En de HEERE, de God Israels, gaf Sihon met al zijn volk in de hand van Israel, dat zij hen sloegen; alzo nam Israel erfelijk in het ganse land der Amorieten, die in datzelve land woonden. 22En zij namen erfelijk in de ganse landpale der Amorieten, van de Arnon af tot aan de Jabbok, en van de woestijn tot aan de Jordaan. 23Zo heeft nu de HEERE, de God Israels, de Amorieten voor het aangezicht van zijn volk Israel uit de bezitting verdreven; en zoudt gij hunlieder erfgenaam zijn? 24Zoudt gij niet dengene erven, dien uw god Kamos voor u uit de bezitting verdreef? Alzo zullen wij al dengene erven, dien de HEERE, onze God, voor ons aangezicht uit de bezitting verdrijft. 25Nu voorts, zijt gij veel beter dan Balak, de zoon van Zippor, de koning der Moabieten? heeft hij ooit met Israel getwist? heeft hij ook ooit tegen hen gekrijgd? 26Terwijl Israel driehonderd jaren gewoond heeft in Hesbon, en in haar stedekens, en in Aroer, en in al de stedekens, en in al de steden, die aan de zijde van de Arnon zijn; waarom hebt gij het dan in die tijd niet gered? 27Ook heb ik tegen u niet gezondigd, maar gij doet kwalijk bij mij, dat gij tegen mij krijgt; de HEERE, Die Rechter is, richte heden tussen de kinderen Israels en tussen de kinderen Ammons! 28Maar de koning der kinderen Ammons hoorde niet naar de woorden van Jeftha, die hij tot hem gezonden had. 29Toen kwam de Geest des HEEREN op Jeftha, dat hij Gilead en Manasse doortrok; want hij trok door tot Mizpa in Gilead, en van Mizpa in Gilead trok hij door tot de kinderen Ammons. 30En Jeftha beloofde den HEERE een gelofte, en zeide: Indien Gij de kinderen Ammons ganselijk in mijn hand zult geven; 31Zo zal het uitgaande, dat uit de deur van mijn huis mij tegemoet zal uitgaan, als ik met vrede van de kinderen Ammons wederkom, dat zal des HEEREN zijn, en ik zal het offeren ten brandoffer. 32Alzo trok Jeftha door naar de kinderen Ammons, om tegen hen te strijden; en de HEERE gaf hen in zijn hand. 33En hij sloeg hen van Aroer af tot daar gij komt te Minnith, twintig steden, en tot aan Abel-Keramim, met een zeer groten slag. Alzo werden de kinderen Ammons ten ondergebracht voor het aangezicht der kinderen Israels. 34Toen nu Jeftha te Mizpa bij zijn huis kwam, ziet, zo ging zijn dochter uit hem tegemoet, met trommelen en met reien. Zij nu was alleen, een enig kind; hij had uit zich anders geen zoon of dochter. 35En het geschiedde, als hij haar zag, zo verscheurde hij zijn klederen, en zeide: Ach, mijn dochter! gij hebt mij ganselijk nedergebogen, en gij zijt onder degenen, die mij beroeren; want ik heb mijn mond opengedaan tot den HEERE, en ik zal niet kunnen teruggaan. 36En zij zeide tot hem: Mijn vader! hebt gij uw mond opengedaan tot den HEERE, doe mij, gelijk als uit uw mond gegaan is; naardien u de HEERE volkomene wraak gegeven heeft van uw vijanden, van de kinderen Ammons. 37Voorts zeide zij tot haar vader: Laat deze zaak aan mij geschieden: Laat twee maanden van mij af, dat ik heenga, en ga tot de bergen, en bewene mijn maagdom, ik en mijn gezellinnen. 38En hij zeide: Ga heen; en hij liet haar twee maanden gaan. Toen ging zij heen met haar gezellinnen, en beweende haar maagdom op de bergen. 39En het geschiedde ten einde van twee maanden dat zij tot haar vader wederkwam, die aan haar volbracht zijn gelofte, die hij beloofd had; en zij heeft geen man bekend. Voorts werd het een gewoonheid in Israel, 40Dat de dochteren Israels van jaar tot jaar heengingen, om de dochter van Jeftha, de Gileadiet, aan te spreken, vier dagen in het jaar.
