1Getta il tuo pane sulle acque, perché dopo molto tempo tu lo ritroverai. 2Fanne parte a sette, ed anche a otto, perché tu non sai che male può avvenire sulla terra. 3Quando le nuvole son piene di pioggia, la riversano sulla terra; e se un albero cade verso il sud o verso il nord, dove cade, quivi resta. 4Chi bada al vento non seminerà; chi guarda alle nuvole non mieterà. 5Come tu non conosci la via del vento, né come si formino le ossa in seno alla donna incinta, così non conosci l’opera di Dio, che fa tutto. 6Fin dal mattino semina la tua semenza, e la sera non dar posa alle tue mani; poiché tu non sai quale dei due lavori riuscirà meglio: se questo o quello, o se ambedue saranno ugualmente buoni. 7La luce è dolce, ed è cosa piacevole agli occhi vedere il sole. 8Se dunque un uomo vive molti anni, si rallegri tutti questi anni, e pensi ai giorni delle tenebre, che saran molti; tutto quello che avverrà è vanità. 9(H12-1) Rallegrati pure, o giovane, durante la tua adolescenza, e gioisca pure il cuor tuo durante i giorni della tua giovinezza; cammina pure nelle vie dove ti mena il cuore e seguendo gli sguardi degli occhi tuoi; ma sappi che, per tutte queste cose, Iddio ti chiamerà in giudizio! 10(H12-2) Bandisci dal tuo cuore la tristezza, e allontana dalla tua carne la sofferenza; poiché la giovinezza e l’aurora sono vanità.
1Cast your bread on the waters; for you shall find it after many days. 2Give a portion to seven, yes, even to eight; for you don’t know what evil will be on the earth. 3If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth; and if a tree falls toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falls, there shall it be. 4He who observes the wind won’t sow; and he who regards the clouds won’t reap. 5As you don’t know what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child; even so you don’t know the work of God who does all. 6In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening don’t withhold your hand; for you don’t know which will prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both will be equally good. 7Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to see the sun. 8Yes, if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember the days of darkness, for they shall be many. All that comes is vanity. 9Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. 10Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.
1Werp uw brood uit op het water, want gij zult het vinden na vele dagen. 2Geef een deel aan zeven, ja, ook aan acht; want gij weet niet, wat kwaad op de aarde wezen zal. 3Als de wolken vol geworden zijn, zo storten zij plasregen uit op de aarde; en als de boom naar het zuiden, of als hij naar het noorden valt, in de plaats, waar de boom valt, daar zal hij wezen. 4Wie op den wind acht geeft, die zal niet zaaien, en wie op de wolken ziet, die zal niet maaien. 5Gelijk gij niet weet, welke de weg des winds zij, of hoedanig de beenderen zijn in den buik van een zwangere vrouw, alzo weet gij het werk Gods niet, Die het alles maakt. 6Zaai uw zaad in den morgenstond, en trek uw hand des avonds niet af; want gij weet niet, wat recht wezen zal, of dit of dat, of dat die beide te zamen goed zijn zullen. 7Verder, het licht is zoet, en het is den ogen goed de zon te aanschouwen; 8Maar indien de mens veel jaren heeft, en verblijdt zich in die allen, zo laat hem ook gedenken aan de dagen der duisternis, want die zullen veel zijn; en al wat zal gekomen is, is ijdelheid. 9Verblijd u, o jongeling! in uw jeugd, en laat uw hart zich vermaken in de dagen uwer jongelingschap, en wandel in de wegen uws harten, en in de aanschouwingen uwer ogen; maar weet, dat God, om al deze dingen, u zal doen komen voor het gericht. 10Zo doe dan de toornigheid wijken van uw hart, en doe het kwade weg van uw vlees, want de jeugd, en de jonkheid is ijdelheid.
