1L’Eterno parlò ancora a Mosè nelle pianure di Moab presso il Giordano, di faccia a Gerico, dicendo: 2"Ordina ai figliuoli d’Israele che, della eredità che possederanno diano ai Leviti delle città da abitare; darete pure ai Leviti il contado ch’è intorno alle città. 3Ed essi avranno le città pel abitarvi; e il contado servirà per i loro bestiami, per i loro beni e per tutti i loro animali. 4Il contado delle città che darete ai Leviti si estenderà fuori per lo spazio di mille cubiti dalle mura della città, tutt’intorno. 5Misurerete dunque, fuori della città, duemila cubiti dal lato orientale, duemila cubiti dal lato meridionale, duemila cubiti dal lato occidentale e duemila cubiti dal lato settentrionale; la città sarà in mezzo. Tale sarà il contado di ciascuna delle loro città. 6Fra le città che darete ai Leviti ci saranno le sei città di rifugio, che voi designerete perché vi si rifugi l’omicida; e a queste aggiungerete altre quarantadue città. 7Tutte le città che darete ai Leviti saranno dunque quarantotto, col relativo contado. 8E di queste città che darete ai Leviti, prendendole dalla proprietà dei figliuoli d’Israele, ne prenderete di più da quelli che ne hanno di più, e di meno da quelli che ne hanno di meno; ognuno darà, delle sue città, ai Leviti, in proporzione della eredità che gli sarà toccata". 9Poi l’Eterno parlò a Mosè, dicendo: 10"Parla ai figliuoli d’Israele e di’ loro: Quando avrete passato il Giordano e sarete entrati nel paese di Canaan, 11designerete delle città che siano per voi delle città di rifugio, dove possa ricoverarsi l’omicida che avrà ucciso qualcuno involontariamente. 12Queste città vi serviranno di rifugio contro il vindice del sangue, affinché l’omicida non sia messo a morte prima d’esser comparso in giudizio dinanzi alla raunanza. 13Delle città che darete, sei saranno dunque per voi città di rifugio. 14Darete tre città di qua dal Giordano, e darete tre altre città nel paese di Canaan; e saranno città di rifugio. 15Queste sei città serviranno di rifugio ai figliuoli d’Israele, allo straniero e a colui che soggiornerà fra voi, affinché vi scampi chiunque abbia ucciso qualcuno involontariamente. 16Ma se uno colpisce un altro con uno stromento di ferro, sì che quello ne muoia, quel tale è un omicida; l’omicida dovrà esser punito di morte. 17E se lo colpisce con una pietra che aveva in mano, atta a causare la morte, e il colpito muore, quel tale è un omicida; l’omicida dovrà esser punito di morte. 18O se lo colpisce con uno stromento di legno che aveva in mano, atto a causare la morte, e il colpito muore, quel tale è un omicida; l’omicida dovrà esser punito di morte. 19Sarà il vindice del sangue quegli che metterà a morte l’omicida; quando lo incontrerà, l’ucciderà. 20Se uno dà a un altro una spinta per odio, o gli getta contro qualcosa con premeditazione, sì che quello ne muoia, 21o lo colpisce per inimicizia con la mano, sì che quello ne muoia, colui che ha colpito dovrà esser punito di morte; è un omicida; il vindice del sangue ucciderà l’omicida quando lo incontrerà. 22Ma se gli da una spinta per caso e non per inimicizia, o gli getta contro qualcosa senza premeditazione, 23o se, senza vederlo, gli fa cadere addosso una pietra che possa causare la morte, e quello ne muore, senza che l’altro gli fosse nemico o gli volesse fare del male, 24allora ecco le norme secondo le quali la raunanza giudicherà fra colui che ha colpito e il vindice del sangue. 25La raunanza libererà l’omicida dalle mani del vindice del sangue e lo farà tornare alla città di rifugio dove s’era ricoverato. Quivi dimorerà, fino alla morte del sommo sacerdote che fu unto con l’olio santo. 26Ma se l’omicida esce dai confini della città di rifugio dove s’era ricoverato, 27e se il vindice del sangue trova l’omicida fuori de’ confini della sua città di rifugio e l’uccide, il vindice del sangue non sarà responsabile del sangue versato. 28Poiché l’omicida deve stare nella sua città di rifugio fino alla morte del sommo sacerdote; ma, dopo la morte del sommo sacerdote, l’omicida potrà tornare nella terra di sua proprietà. 29Queste vi servano come norme di diritto, di generazione in generazione, dovunque dimorerete. 30Se uno uccide un altro, l’omicida sarà messo a morte in seguito a deposizione di testimoni; ma un unico testimone non basterà per far condannare una persona a morte. 31Non accetterete prezzo di riscatto per la vita d’un omicida colpevole e degno di morte, perché dovrà esser punito di morte. 32Non accetterete prezzo di riscatto che permetta a un omicida di ricoverarsi nella sua città di rifugio e di tornare ad abitare nel paese prima della morte del sacerdote. 33Non contaminerete il paese dove sarete, perché il sangue contamina il paese; e non si potrà fare per il paese alcuna espiazione del sangue che vi sarà stato sparso, se non mediante il sangue di colui che l’avrà sparso. 34Non contaminerete dunque il paese che andate ad abitare, e in mezzo al quale io dimorerò; poiché io sono l’Eterno che dimoro in mezzo ai figliuoli d’Israele".
1Yahweh spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, 2“Command the children of Israel to give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in. You shall give suburbs for the cities around them to the Levites. 3The cities shall they have to dwell in. Their suburbs shall be for their livestock, and for their substance, and for all their animals. 4“The suburbs of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward one thousand cubits around it. 5You shall measure outside of the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the middle. This shall be the suburbs of their cities. 6“The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the man slayer to flee to. Besides them you shall give forty-two cities. 7All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities together with their suburbs. 8Concerning the cities which you shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many you shall take many; and from the few you shall take few. Everyone according to his inheritance which he inherits shall give some of his cities to the Levites.” 9Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 10“Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11then you shall appoint for yourselves cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the man slayer who kills any person unwittingly may flee there. 12The cities shall be to you for refuge from the avenger, that the man slayer not die, until he stands before the congregation for judgment. 13The cities which you shall give shall be for you six cities of refuge. 14You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and you shall give three cities in the land of Canaan. They shall be cities of refuge. 15For the children of Israel, and for the stranger and for the foreigner living among them, shall these six cities be for refuge; that everyone who kills any person unwittingly may flee there. 16“‘But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death. 17If he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death. 18Or if he struck him with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death. 19The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death. When he meets him, he shall put him to death. 20If he shoved him out of hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died, 21or in hostility struck him with his hand, so that he died, he who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death, when he meets him. 22“‘But if he shoved him suddenly without hostility, or hurled on him anything without lying in wait, 23or with any stone, by which a man may die, not seeing him, and cast it on him, so that he died, and he was not his enemy, neither sought his harm; 24then the congregation shall judge between the striker and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances. 25The congregation shall deliver the man slayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he had fled. He shall dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil. 26“‘But if the man slayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, where he flees, 27and the avenger of blood finds him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the man slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood, 28because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest, the man slayer shall return into the land of his possession. 29“‘These things shall be for a statute and ordinance to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 30“‘Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be slain at the mouth of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify against any person that he die. 31“‘Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death; but he shall surely be put to death. 32“‘You shall take no ransom for him who is fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest. 33“‘So you shall not pollute the land in which you are; for blood pollutes the land. No atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it. 34You shall not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; for I, Yahweh, dwell in the midst of the children of Israel.’”

Dit zullen zij hebben tot voorsteden van de steden. 6De steden nu, die gij aan de Levieten zult geven, zullen zijn zes vrijsteden, die gij geven zult, opdat de doodslager daarheen vliede; en boven dezelve zult gij hun twee en veertig steden geven. 7Al de steden, die gij aan de Levieten geven zult, zullen zijn acht en veertig steden, deze met haar voorsteden. 8De steden, die gij van de bezitting der kinderen Israels geven zult, zult gij van dien, die vele heeft, vele nemen, en van dien, die weinig heeft, weinige nemen; een ieder zal naar zijn erfenis, die zij zullen erven, van zijn steden aan de Levieten geven. 9Voorts sprak de HEERE tot Mozes, zeggende: 10Spreek tot de kinderen Israels, en zeg tot hen: Wanneer gij over de Jordaan gaat naar het land Kanaan. 11Zo zult gij maken, dat u steden tegemoet liggen, die u tot vrijsteden zullen zijn; opdat de doodslager daarheen vliede, die een ziel onwetend geslagen heeft. 12En deze steden zullen u tot een toevlucht zijn voor den bloed wreker; opdat de doodslager niet sterve, totdat hij voor de vergadering aan het gericht gestaan hebbe. 13En deze steden, die gij geven zult, zullen zes vrijsteden voor u zijn. 14Drie dezer vrijsteden zult gij geven op deze zijde van de Jordaan, en drie dezer steden zult gij geven in het land Kanaan; vrijsteden zullen het zijn. 15Die zes steden zullen voor de kinderen Israels, en voor den vreemdeling, en den bijwoner in het midden van hen, tot een toevlucht zijn; opdat daarheen vliede, wie een ziel onvoorziens slaat. 16Maar indien hij hem met een ijzeren instrument geslagen heeft, dat hij gestorven zij, een doodslager is hij; deze doodslager zal zekerlijk gedood worden. 17Of indien hij hem met een handsteen, waarvan met zoude kunnen sterven, geslagen heeft, dat hij gestorven zij, een doodslager is hij; deze doodslager zal zekerlijk gedood worden. 18Of indien hij hem met een houten handinstrument, waarvan men zoude kunnen sterven, geslagen heeft, dat hij gestorven zij, een doodslager is hij; deze doodslager zal zekerlijk gedood worden. 19De wreker des bloeds, die zal den doodslager doden; als hij hem ontmoet, zal hij hem doden. 20Indien hij hem ook door haat zal gestoten hebben, of met opzet op hem geworpen heeft, dat hij gestorven zij; 21Of hem door vijandschap met zijn hand geslagen heeft, dat hij gestorven zij; de slager zal zekerlijk gedood worden, een doodslager is hij; de bloedwreker zal dezen doodslager doden, als hij hem ontmoet. 22Maar indien hij hem met der haast, zonder vijandschap gestoten heeft, of enig instrument zonder opzet op hem geworpen heeft; 23Of onvoorziens met enigen steen, waarvan men zoude kunnen sterven, en hij dien op hem heeft doen vallen, dat hij gestorven zij, zo hij hem toch geen vijand was, noch zijn kwaad zoekende; 24Zo zal de vergadering richten tussen den slager, en tussen den bloedwreker, naar deze zelve rechten. 25En de vergadering zal den doodslager redden uit den hand des bloedwrekers, en de vergadering zal hem doen wederkeren tot zijn vrijstad, waarheen hij gevloden was; en hij zal daarin blijven tot den dood des hogepriesters, dien men met de heilige olie gezalfd heeft. 26Doch indien de doodslager enigzins zal gaan uit de palen zijner vrijstad, waarheen hij gevloden was, 27En de bloedwreker hem zal vinden buiten de palen zijner vrijstad; zo de bloedwreker den doodslager zal doden, het zal hem geen bloedschuld zijn. 28Want hij zou in zijn vrijstad gebleven zijn tot den dood des hogepriesters; maar na de dood des hogepriesters zal de doodslager wederkeren tot het land zijner bezitting. 29En deze dingen zullen ulieden zijn tot een inzetting van recht, bij uw geslachten, in al uw woningen. 30Al wie de ziel slaat, naar den mond der getuige zal men den doodslager doden, maar een enig getuige zal niet getuigen tegen een ziel, dat zij sterve. 31En gij zult geen verzoening nemen voor de ziel des doodslagers, die schuldig is te sterven; want hij zal zekerlijk gedood worden. 32Ook zult gij geen verzoening nemen voor dien, die gevlucht is naar zijn vrijstad, dat hij zou wederkeren, om te wonen in het land, tot den dood des hoge priesters. 33Zo zult gij niet ontheiligen het land, waarin gij zijt; want het bloed ontheiligt het land; en voor het land zal geen verzoening gedaan worden over het bloed, dat daarin vergoten is, dan door het bloed desgenen, die dat vergoten heeft. 34Verontreinigt dan het land niet, waarin gij gaat wonen, in welks midden Ik wonen zal; want Ik ben de HEERE, wonende in het midden der kinderen Israels.
