1Ma Giona ne provò un gran dispiacere, e ne fu irritato; e pregò l’Eterno, dicendo: 2"O Eterno, non è egli questo ch’io dicevo, mentr’ero ancora nel mio paese? Perciò m’affrettai a fuggirmene a Tarsis; perché sapevo che sei un Dio misericordioso, pietoso, lento all’ira, di gran benignità, e che ti penti del male minacciato. 3Or dunque, o Eterno, ti prego, riprenditi la mia vita; perché per me val meglio morire che vivere". 4E l’Eterno gli disse: "Fai tu bene a irritarti così?" 5Poi Giona uscì dalla città, e si mise a sedere a oriente della città; si fece quivi una capanna, e vi sedette sotto, all’ombra, stando a vedere quello che succederebbe alla città. 6E Dio, l’Eterno, per guarirlo dalla sua irritazione, fece crescere un ricino, che montò su di sopra a Giona, per fargli ombra al capo; e Giona provò una grandissima gioia a motivo di quel ricino. 7Ma l’indomani, allo spuntar dell’alba, Iddio fece venire un verme, il quale attaccò il ricino, ed esso si seccò. 8E come il sole fu levato, Iddio fece soffiare un vento soffocante d’oriente, e il sole picchiò sul capo di Giona, sì ch’egli venne meno, e chiese di morire, dicendo: "Meglio è per me morire che vivere". 9E Dio disse a Giona: "Fai tu bene a irritarti così a motivo del ricino?" Egli rispose: "Sì, faccio bene a irritarmi fino alla morte". 10E l’Eterno disse: "Tu hai pietà del ricino per il quale non hai faticato, e che non hai fatto crescere, che è nato in una notte e in una notte è perito: 11e io non avrei pietà di Ninive, la gran città, nella quale si trovano più di centoventimila persone che non sanno distinguere la loro destra dalla loro sinistra, e tanta quantità di bestiame?"
1But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 2He prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please, Yahweh, wasn’t this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm. 3Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4Yahweh said, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 5Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city. 6Yahweh God prepared a vine, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine. 7But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine, so that it withered. 8When the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.” 9God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?” He said, “I am right to be angry, even to death.” 10Yahweh said, “You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night. 11Shouldn’t I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can’t discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much livestock?”
1Dit verdroot Jona met groot verdriet, en zijn toorn ontstak. 2En hij bad tot den HEERE, en zeide: Och HEERE! was dit mijn woord niet, als ik nog in mijn land was? Daarom kwam ik het voor, vluchtende naar Tarsis; want ik wist, dat Gij een genadig en barmhartig God zijt, lankmoedig en groot van goedertierenheid, en berouw hebbende over het kwaad. 3Nu dan, HEERE! neem toch mijn ziel van mij; want het is mij beter te sterven dan te leven. 4En de HEERE zeide: Is uw toorn billijk ontstoken? 5Jona nu ging ter stad uit, en zette zich tegen het oosten der stad; en hij maakte zich aldaar een verdek, en zat daaronder in de schaduw, totdat hij zag, wat van de stad zou worden. 6En God, de HEERE, beschikte een wonderboom, en deed hem opschieten boven Jona, opdat er schaduw mocht zijn over zijn hoofd, om hem te redden van zijn verdriet. En Jona verblijdde zich over den wonderboom met grote blijdschap. 7Maar God beschikte een worm des anderen daags in het opgaan van den dageraad; die stak den wonderboom, dat hij verdorde. 8En het geschiedde, als de zon oprees, dat God een stillen oostenwind beschikte; en de zon stak op het hoofd van Jona, dat hij amechtig werd; en hij wenste zijner ziel te mogen sterven, en zeide: Het is mij beter te sterven dan te leven. 9Toen zeide God tot Jona: Is uw toorn billijk ontstoken over den wonderboom? En hij zeide: Billijk is mijn toorn ontstoken ter dood toe. 10En de HEERE zeide: Gij verschoont den wonderboom, aan welken gij niet hebt gearbeid, noch dien groot gemaakt; die in een nacht werd, en in een nacht verging; 11En Ik zou die grote stad Nineve niet verschonen? waarin veel meer dan honderd en twintig duizend mensen zijn, die geen onderscheid weten tussen hun rechterhand, en hun linkerhand; daartoe veel vee?
