1Io starò alla mia vedetta, mi porrò sopra una torre, e starò attento a quello che l’Eterno mi dirà, e a quello che dovrò rispondere circa la rimostranza che ho fatto. 2E l’Eterno mi rispose e disse: "Scrivi la visione, incidila su delle tavole, perché si possa leggere speditamente; 3poiché è una visione per un tempo già fissato; ella s’affretta verso la fine, e non mentirà; se tarda, aspettala; poiché per certo verrà; non tarderà". 4Ecco, l’anima sua è gonfia, non è retta in lui; ma il giusto vivrà per la sua fede. 5E poi, il vino è perfido; l’uomo arrogante non può starsene tranquillo; egli allarga le sue brame come il soggiorno de’ morti; è come la morte e non si può saziare, ma raduna presso di sé tutte le nazioni, raccoglie intorno a sé tutti i popoli. 6Tutti questi non faranno contro di lui proverbi, sarcasmi, enigmi? Si dirà: "Guai a colui che accumula ciò che non è suo! Fino a quando? Guai a colui che si carica di pegni!" 7I tuoi creditori non si leveranno essi ad un tratto? I tuoi tormentatori non si desteranno essi? E tu diventerai loro preda. 8Poiché tu hai saccheggiato molte nazioni, tutto il resto dei popoli ti saccheggerà, a motivo del sangue umano sparso, della violenza fatta ai paesi, alle città e a tutti i loro abitanti. 9Guai a colui ch’è avido d’illecito guadagno per la sua casa, per porre il suo nido in alto e mettersi al sicuro dalla mano della sventura! 10Tu hai divisato l’onta della tua casa, sterminando molti popoli; e hai peccato contro te stesso. 11Poiché la pietra grida dalla parete, e la trave le risponde dall’armatura di legname. 12Guai a colui che edifica la città col sangue, e fonda una città sull’iniquità! 13Ecco, questo non procede egli dall’Eterno che i popoli s’affatichino per il fuoco, e le nazioni si stanchino per nulla? 14Poiché la terra sarà ripiena della conoscenza della gloria dell’Eterno, come le acque coprono il fondo del mare. 15Guai a colui che dà da bere al prossimo, a te che gli versi il tuo veleno e l’ubriachi, per guardare la sua nudità! 16Tu sarai saziato d’onta anziché di gloria; bevi anche tu, e scopri la tua incirconcisione! La coppa della destra dell’Eterno farà il giro fino a te, e l’ignominia coprirà la tua gloria. 17Poiché la violenza fatta al Libano e la devastazione che spaventava le bestie, ricadranno su te, a motivo del sangue umano sparso, della violenza fatta ai paesi, alle città e a tutti loro abitanti. 18A che giova l’immagine scolpita perché l’artefice la scolpisca? A che giova l’immagine fusa che insegna la menzogna, perché l’artefice si confidi nel suo lavoro, fabbricando idoli muti? 19Guai a chi dice al legno: "Svegliati!" e alla pietra muta: "Lèvati!" Può essa ammaestrare? Ecco, è ricoperta d’oro e d’argento, ma non v’è in lei spirito alcuno. 20Ma l’Eterno è nel suo tempio santo; tutta la terra faccia silenzio in presenza sua!
1I will stand at my watch, and set myself on the ramparts, and will look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. 2Yahweh answered me, “Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he who runs may read it. 3For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won’t delay. 4Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith. 5Yes, moreover, wine is treacherous. A haughty man who doesn’t stay at home, who enlarges his desire as Sheol, and he is like death, and can’t be satisfied, but gathers to himself all nations, and heaps to himself all peoples. 6Won’t all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases that which is not his, and who enriches himself by extortion! How long?’ 7Won’t your debtors rise up suddenly, and wake up those who make you tremble, and you will be their victim? 8Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples will plunder you, because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all who dwell in it. 9Woe to him who gets an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil! 10You have devised shame to your house, by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul. 11For the stone will cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the woodwork will answer it. 12Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity! 13Behold, isn’t it of Yahweh of Armies that the peoples labor for the fire, and the nations weary themselves for vanity? 14For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Yahweh’s glory, as the waters cover the sea. 15“Woe to him who gives his neighbor drink, pouring your inflaming wine until they are drunk, so that you may gaze at their naked bodies! 16You are filled with shame, and not glory. You will also drink, and be exposed! The cup of Yahweh’s right hand will come around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory. 17For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and the destruction of the animals, which made them afraid; because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to every city and to those who dwell in them. 18“What value does the engraved image have, that its maker has engraved it; the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make mute idols? 19Woe to him who says to the wood, ‘Awake!’ or to the mute stone, ‘Arise!’ Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in its midst. 20But Yahweh is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him!”
1Ik stond op mijn wacht, en ik stelde mij op de sterkte, en ik hield wacht om te zien, wat Hij in mij spreken zou, en wat ik antwoorden zou op mijn bestraffing. 2Toen antwoordde mij de HEERE, en zeide: Schrijf het gezicht, en stel het duidelijk op tafelen, opdat daarin leze die voorbijloopt. 3Want het gezicht zal nog tot een bestemden tijd zijn, dan zal Hij het op het einde voortbrengen, en niet liegen; zo Hij vertoeft, verbeid Hem, want Hij zal gewisselijk komen, Hij zal niet achterblijven. 4Ziet, zijn ziel verheft zich, zij is niet recht in hem; maar de rechtvaardige zal door zijn geloof leven. 5En ook dewijl hij trouwelooslijk handelt bij den wijn, een trots man is, en in zijn woning niet blijft; die zijn ziel wijd opendoet als het graf, en gelijk de dood is, die niet zat wordt, en tot zich verzamelt al de heidenen, en vergadert tot zich alle volken. 6Zouden dan niet al dezelve van hem een spreekwoord opnemen, en een uitlegging der raadselen van hem? En men zal zeggen: Wee dien, die vermeerdert hetgeen het zijne niet is (hoe lange!), en dien, die op zich laadt dik slijk. 7Zullen niet onvoorziens opstaan, die u bijten zullen, en ontwaken, die u zullen bewegen, en zult gij hun niet tot plundering worden? 8Omdat gij vele heidenen beroofd hebt, zo zullen alle overgebleven volken u beroven; om het bloed der mensen, en het geweld aan het land, de stad, en alle inwoners derzelve. 9Wee dien, die met kwade gierigheid giert voor zijn huis, opdat hij in de hoogte zijn nest stelle, om bevrijd te zijn uit de hand des kwaads. 10Gij hebt schaamte beraadslaagd voor uw huis; uitroeiende vele volken, zo hebt gij gezondigd tegen uw ziel. 11Want de steen uit den muur roept, en de balk uit het hout antwoordt dien. 12Wee dien, die de stad met bloed bouwt, en die de stad met onrecht bevestigt! 13Ziet, is het niet van den HEERE der heirscharen, dat de volken arbeiden ten vure, en de lieden zich vermoeien tevergeefs? 14Want de aarde zal vervuld worden, dat zij de heerlijkheid des HEEREN bekennen, gelijk de wateren den bodem der zee bedekken. 15Wee dien, die zijn naaste te drinken geeft, gij, die uw wijnfles daarbij voegt, en ook dronken maakt, opdat gij hun naaktheden aanschouwt. 16Gij zult ook verzadigd worden met schande, voor eer; drinkt gij ook, en ontbloot de voorhuid; de beker der rechterhand des HEEREN zal zich tot u wenden, en er zal een schandelijk uitbraaksel over uw heerlijkheid zijn. 17Want het geweld, dat tegen Libanon begaan is, zal u bedekken, en de verwoesting der beesten zal ze verschrikken, om des bloeds wil der mensen, en des gewelds in het land, de stad en aan alle inwoners derzelve. 18Wat zal het gesneden beeld baten, dat zijn formeerder het gesneden heeft? of het gegoten beeld, hetwelk een leugenleraar is, dat de formeerder op zijn formeersel vertrouwt, als hij stomme afgoden gemaakt heeft? 19Wee dien, die tot het hout zegt: Word wakker! en: Ontwaak! tot den zwijgenden steen. Zou het leren? Ziet, het is met goud en zilver overtrokken, en er is gans geen geest in het midden van hetzelve. 20Maar de HEERE is in Zijn heiligen tempel. Zwijg voor Zijn aangezicht, gij ganse aarde!
