1Or mentre Esdra pregava e faceva questa confessione piangendo e prostrato davanti alla casa di Dio, si raunò intorno a lui una grandissima moltitudine di gente d’Israele, uomini, donne e fanciulli; e il popolo piangeva dirottamente. 2Allora Scecania, figliuolo di Jehiel, uno de’ figliuoli di Elam, prese a dire a Esdra: "Noi siamo stati infedeli al nostro Dio, sposando donne straniere prese dai popoli di questo paese; nondimeno, rimane ancora, a questo riguardo, una speranza a Israele. 3Facciamo un patto col nostro Dio impegnandoci a rimandare tutte queste donne e i figliuoli nati da esse, come consigliano il mio signore e quelli che tremano dinanzi ai comandamenti del nostro Dio. E facciasi quel che vuole la legge. 4Lèvati, poiché questo e affar tuo, e noi sarem teco. Fatti animo, ed agisci!" 5Allora Esdra si levò, fece giurare ai capi de’ sacerdoti, de’ Leviti, e di tutto Israele che farebbero com’era stato detto. E quelli giurarono. 6Poi Esdra si levò d’innanzi alla casa di Dio, e andò nella camera di Johanan, figliuolo di Eliascib: e come vi fu entrato, non mangiò pane né bevve acqua, perché facea cordoglio per la infedeltà di quelli ch’erano stati in esilio. 7E si bandì in Giuda e a Gerusalemme che tutti quelli della cattività si adunassero a Gerusalemme; 8e che chiunque non venisse entro tre giorni seguendo il consiglio dei capi e degli anziani, tutti i suoi beni gli sarebbero confiscati, ed egli stesso sarebbe escluso dalla raunanza de’ reduci dalla cattività. 9Così tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Beniamino s’adunarono a Gerusalemme entro i tre giorni. Era il ventesimo giorno del nono mese. Tutto il popolo stava sulla piazza della casa di Dio, tremante per cagion di questa cosa ed a causa della gran pioggia. 10E il sacerdote Esdra si levò e disse loro: "Voi avete commesso una infedeltà, sposando donne straniere, e avete accresciuta la colpa d’Israele. 11Ma ora rendete omaggio all’Eterno, all’Iddio de’ vostri padri, e fate quel che a lui piace! Separatevi dai popoli di questo paese e dalle donne straniere!" 12Allora tutta la raunanza rispose e disse ad alta voce: "Sì, dobbiam fare come tu hai detto! 13Ma il popolo è in gran numero, e il tempo è molto piovoso e non possiamo stare allo scoperto; e questo non è affar d’un giorno o due, poiché siamo stati numerosi a commettere questo peccato. 14Rimangano dunque qui i capi di tutta la raunanza; e tutti quelli che nelle nostre città hanno sposato donne straniere vengano a tempi determinati, con gli anziani e i giudici d’ogni città, finché non sia rimossa da noi l’ardente ira del nostro Dio, per questa infedeltà". 15Jonathan, figliuolo di Asael, e Jahzia, figliuolo di Tikva, appoggiati da Meshullam e dal Levita Hubbetai, furono i soli ad opporsi a questo; 16ma quei della cattività fecero a quel modo; e furono scelti il sacerdote Esdra e alcuni capi famiglia secondo le loro case patriarcali, tutti designati per nome, i quali cominciarono a tener adunanza il primo giorno del decimo mese, per esaminare i fatti. 17Il primo giorno del primo mese aveano finito quanto concerneva tutti quelli che aveano sposato donne straniere. 18Tra i figliuoli de’ sacerdoti questi si trovarono, che aveano sposato donne straniere: de’ figliuoli di Jeshua, figliuolo di Jotsadak, e tra i suoi fratelli: Maaseia, Eliezer, Jarib e Ghedalia, 19i quali promisero, dando la mano, di mandar via le loro mogli, e offrirono un montone come sacrifizio per la loro colpa. 20Dei figliuoli d’Immer: Hanani e Zebadia. 21De’ figliuoli di Harim: Maaseia, Elia, Scemaia, Jehiel ed Uzzia. 22De’ figliuoli di Pashur: Elioenai, Maaseia, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, Elasa. 23Dei Leviti: Jozabad, Scimei, Kelaia, detto anche Kelita, Petahia, Giuda, ed Eliezer. 24De’ cantori: Eliascib. De’ portinai; Shallum, Telem e Uri. 25E degl’Israeliti: de’ figliuoli di Parosh: Ramia, Izzia, Malkia, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malkia e Benaia. 26De’ figliuoli di Elam: Mattania, Zaccaria, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth ed Elia. 27De’ figliuoli di Zattu: Elioenai, Eliascib, Mattania, Jeremoth, Zabad e Aziza. 28De’ figliuoli di Bebai: Johanan, Hanania, Zabbai, Athlai. 29De’ figliuoli di Bani: Meshullam, Malluc, Adaia, Jashub, Sceal, e Ramoth. 30De’ figliuoli di Pahath-Moab: Adna, Kelal, Benaia, Maaseia, Mattania, Betsaleel, Binnui e Manasse. 31De’ figliuoli di Harim: Eliezer, Isscia, Malkia, Scemaia, Simeone, 32Beniamino, Malluc, Scemaria. 33De’ figliuoli di Hashum: Mattenai, Mattatta, Zabad, Elifelet, Jeremai, Manasse, Scimei. 34De’ figliuoli di Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel, 35Benaia, Bedia, Keluhu, 36Vania, Meremoth, Eliascib, 37Mattania, Mattenai, Jaasai, 38Bani, Binnui, Scimei, 39Scelemia, Nathan, Adaia, 40Macnadbai, Shashai, Sharai, 41Azarel, Scelemia, Scemaria, 42Shallum, Amaria, Giuseppe. 43De’ figliuoli di Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithia, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, Benaia. 44Tutti questi avean preso delle mogli straniere; e ve n’eran di quelli che da queste mogli avevano avuto de’ figliuoli.
1Now while Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before God’s house, there was gathered together to him out of Israel a very great assembly of men and women and children; for the people wept very bitterly. 2Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered Ezra, “We have trespassed against our God, and have married foreign women of the peoples of the land. Yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this thing. 3Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God. Let it be done according to the law. 4Arise; for the matter belongs to you, and we are with you. Be courageous, and do it.” 5Then Ezra arose, and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. So they swore. 6Then Ezra rose up from before God’s house, and went into the room of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came there, he ate no bread, nor drank water; for he mourned because of their trespass of the captivity. 7They made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together to Jerusalem; 8and that whoever didn’t come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the assembly of the captivity. 9Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month: and all the people sat in the broad place before God’s house, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain. 10Ezra the priest stood up, and said to them, “You have trespassed, and have married foreign women, to increase the guilt of Israel. 11Now therefore make confession to Yahweh, the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.” 12Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, “As you have said concerning us, so must we do. 13But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand outside; neither is this a work of one day or two; for we have greatly transgressed in this matter. 14Let now our princes be appointed for all the assembly, and let all those who are in our cities who have married foreign women come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God be turned from us, until this matter is resolved.” 15Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood up against this; and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. 16The children of the captivity did so. Ezra the priest, with certain heads of fathers’ households, after their fathers’ houses, and all of them by their names, were set apart; and they sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17They made an end with all the men who had married foreign women by the first day of the first month. 18Among the sons of the priests there were found who had married foreign women: of the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and his brothers, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19They gave their hand that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their guilt. 20Of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah. 21Of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah. 22Of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah. 23Of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah (the same is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer. 24Of the singers: Eliashib. 1Als Ezra alzo bad, en als hij deze belijdenis deed, wenende en zich voor Gods huis nederwerpende, verzamelde zich tot hem uit Israel een zeer grote gemeente van mannen, en vrouwen, en kinderen; want het volk weende met groot geween. 2Toen antwoordde Sechanja, de zoon van Jehiel, een van de zonen van Elam, en zeide tot Ezra: Wij hebben overtreden tegen onzen God, en wij hebben vreemde vrouwen van de volken des lands bij ons doen wonen; maar nu, er is hope voor Israel, dezen aangaande. 3Laat ons dan nu een verbond maken met onze God, dat wij al die vrouwen, en wat van haar geboren is, zullen doen uitgaan, naar den raad des HEEREN, en dergenen, die beven voor het gebod onzes Gods; en laat er gedaan worden naar de wet. 4Sta op, want deze zaak komt u toe; en wij zullen met u zijn; wees sterk en doe het. 5Toen stond Ezra op, en deed de oversten der priesteren, de Levieten en gans Israel zweren, te zullen doen naar dit woord; en zij zwoeren. 6En Ezra stond op van voor Gods huis, en ging in de kamer van Johanan, den zoon van Eljasib; als hij daar kwam, at hij geen brood, en dronk geen water, want hij bedreef rouw over de overtreding der weggevoerden. 7En zij lieten een stem doorgaan door Juda en Jeruzalem, aan al de kinderen der gevangenis, dat zij zich te Jeruzalem zouden verzamelen. 8En al wie niet kwam in drie dagen, naar den raad der vorsten en der oudsten, al zijn have zou verbannen zijn; en hij zelf zou afgezonderd wezen van de gemeente der weggevoerden. 9Toen verzamelden zich alle mannen van Juda en Benjamin te Jeruzalem in drie dagen; het was de negende maand op den twintigsten in de maand; en al het volk zat op de straat van Gods huis, sidderende om deze zaak, en vanwege de plasregenen. 10Toen stond Ezra, de priester, op en zeide tot hen: Gijlieden hebt overtreden, en vreemde vrouwen bij u doen wonen, om Israels schuld te vermeerderen. 11Nu dan, doet den HEERE, uwer vaderen God, belijdenis en doet Zijn welgevallen, en scheidt u af van de volken des lands, en van de vreemde vrouwen. 12En de ganse gemeente antwoordde en zeide met luider stem: Naar uw woorden, alzo komt het ons toe te doen. 13Maar des volks is veel, en het is een tijd van plasregen, dat men hier buiten niet staan kan; en het is geen werk van een dag noch van twee; want velen onzer hebben overtreden in deze zaak. 14Laat toch onze vorsten der ganse gemeente hierover staan, en allen, die in onze steden zijn, die vreemde vrouwen bij zich hebben doen wonen, op gezette tijden komen, en met hen de oudsten van elke stad en derzelver rechters; totdat wij van ons afwenden de hittigheid des toorns onzes Gods, om dezer zaken wil. 15Alleenlijk Jonathan, de zoon van Asahel, en Jehazia, de zoon van Tikva, stonden hierover; en Mesullam, en Sabbethai, de Leviet, hielpen hen. 16En de kinderen der gevangenis deden alzo; en Ezra, de priester, met de mannen, de hoofden der vaderen, naar het huis hunner vaderen, en zij allen, bij namen genoemd, scheidden zich af, en zij zaten op den eersten dag der tiende maand, om deze zaak te onderzoeken. 17En zij voleindden het met alle mannen, die vreemde vrouwen bij zich hadden doen wonen, tot op den eersten dag der eerste maand. 18En er werden gevonden van de zonen der priesteren, die vreemde vrouwen bij zich hadden doen wonen; van de zonen van Jesua, den zoon van Jozadak, en zijn broederen, Maaseja, en Eliezer, en Jarib, en Gedalja. 19En zij gaven hun hand, dat zij hun vrouwen zouden doen uitgaan; en schuldig zijnde, offerden zij een ram van de kudde voor hun schuld. 20En van de kinderen van Immer: Hanani en Zebadja. 21En van de kinderen van Harim: Maaseja, en Elia, en Semaja, en Jehiel, en Uzia, 22En van de kinderen van Pashur: Eljoenai, Maaseja, Ismael, Nethaneel, Jozabad en Elasa. 23En van de Levieten: Jozabad, en Simei, en Kelaja (deze is Kelita), Pethahja, Juda en Eliezer. 24En van de zangers: Eljasib;
