1Il re Belsatsar fece un gran convito a mille de’ suoi grandi; e bevve del vino in presenza dei mille. 2Belsatsar, mentre stava assaporando il vino, ordinò che si recassero i vasi d’oro e d’argento che Nebucadnetsar suo padre aveva portati via dal tempio di Gerusalemme, perché il re, i suoi grandi, le sue mogli e le sue concubine se ne servissero per bere. 3Allora furono recati i vasi d’oro ch’erano stati portati via dal tempio, dalla casa di Dio, ch’era in Gerusalemme; e il re, i suoi grandi, le sue mogli e le sue concubine se ne servirono per bere. 4Bevvero del vino e lodarono gli dèi d’oro, d’argento, di rame, di ferro, di legno e di pietra. 5In quel momento apparvero delle dita d’una mano d’uomo, che si misero a scrivere difaccia al candelabro, sull’intonaco della parete del palazzo reale. E il re vide quel mozzicone di mano che scriveva. 6Allora il re mutò di colore, e i suoi pensieri lo spaventarono; le giunture de’ suoi fianchi si rilassarono, e i suoi ginocchi cominciarono ad urtarsi l’uno contro l’altro. 7Il re gridò forte che si facessero entrare gl’incantatori, i Caldei e gli astrologi; e il re prese a dire ai savi di Babilonia: "Chiunque leggerà questo scritto e me ne darà l’interpretazione sarà rivestito di porpora, avrà al collo una collana d’oro, e sarà terzo nel governo del regno". 8Allora entrarono tutti i savi del re; ma non poteron leggere lo scritto, né darne al re l’interpretazione. 9Allora il re Belsatsar fu preso da grande spavento, mutò di colore, e i suoi grandi furono costernati. 10La regina, com’ebbe udito le parole del re e dei suoi grandi, entrò nella sala del convito. La regina prese a dire: "O re, possa tu vivere in perpetuo! I tuoi pensieri non ti spaventino, e non mutar di colore! 11C’è un uomo nel tuo regno, in cui è lo spirito degli dei santi; e al tempo di tuo padre si trovò in lui una luce, un intelletto e una sapienza, pari alla sapienza degli dèi; e il re Nebucadnetsar tuo padre, il padre tuo, o re, lo stabilì capo dei magi, degli incantatori, de’ Caldei e degli astrologi, 12perché in lui, in questo Daniele, a cui il re avea posto nome Beltsatsar, fu trovato uno spirito straordinario, conoscenza, intelletto, facoltà d’interpretare i sogni, di spiegare enigmi, e di risolvere questioni difficili. Si chiami dunque Daniele ed egli darà l’interpretazione". 13Allora Daniele fu introdotto alla presenza del re; e il re parlò a Daniele, e gli disse: "Sei tu Daniele, uno dei Giudei che il mio re padre menò in cattività da Giuda? 14Io ha sentito dire di te che lo spirito degli dèi è in te, e che in te si trova luce, intelletto, e una sapienza straordinaria. 15Ora, i savi e gl’incantatori sono stati introdotti alla mia presenza, per leggere questo scritto e farmene conoscere l’interpretazione; ma non hanno potuto darmi l’interpretazione della cosa. 16Però, ho sentito dire di te che tu puoi dare interpretazioni e risolvere questioni difficili; ora, se puoi leggere questo scritto e farmene conoscere l’interpretazione, tu sarai rivestito di porpora, avrai al collo una collana d’oro, e sarai terzo nel governo del regno". 17Allora Daniele prese a dire in presenza del re: "Tieniti i tuoi doni e da’ a un altro le tue ricompense; nondimeno io leggerò lo scritto al re e gliene farò conoscere l’interpretazione. 18O re, l’Iddio altissimo aveva dato a Nebucadnetsar tuo padre, regno, grandezza, gloria e maestà; 19e a motivo della grandezza ch’Egli gli aveva dato, tutti i popoli, tutte le nazioni e lingue temevano e tremavano alla sua presenza; egli faceva morire chi voleva, lasciava in vita chi voleva; innalzava chi voleva, abbassava chi voleva. 20Ma quando il suo cuore divenne altero e il suo spirito s’indurò fino a diventare arrogante, fu deposto dal suo trono reale e gli fu tolta la sua gloria; 21fu cacciato di tra i figliuoli degli uomini, il suo cuore fu reso simile a quello delle bestie, e la sua dimora fu con gli asini selvatici; gli fu data a mangiare dell’erba come ai buoi, e il suo corpo fu bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo, finché non riconobbe che l’Iddio altissimo, domina sul regno degli uomini, e ch’egli vi stabilisce sopra chi vuole. 22E tu, o Belsatsar, suo figliuolo, non hai umiliato il tuo cuore, quantunque tu sapessi tutto questo; 23ma ti sei innalzato contro il Signore del cielo; ti sono stati portati davanti i vasi della sua casa, e tu, i tuoi grandi, le tue mogli e le tue concubine ve ne siete serviti per bere; e tu hai lodato gli dèi d’argento, d’oro, di rame, di ferro, di legno e di pietra, i quali non vedono, non odono, non hanno conoscenza di sorta, e non hai glorificato l’Iddio che ha nella sua mano il tuo soffio vitale, e da cui dipendono tutte le tue vie. 24Perciò è stato mandato, da parte sua, quel mozzicone di mano, che ha tracciato quello scritto. 25Questo e lo scritto ch’è stato tracciato: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UFARSIN. 26E questa è l’interpretazione delle parole: MENE: Dio ha fatto il conto del tuo regno, e vi ha posto fine. 27TEKEL: tu sei stato pesato con la bilancia, e sei stato trovato mancante. 28PERES: il tuo regno è diviso, e dato ai Medi e ai Persiani". 29Allora, per ordine di Belsatsar, Daniele fu rivestito di porpora, gli fu messa al collo una collana d’oro, e fu proclamato che egli sarebbe terzo nel governo del regno. 30In quella stessa notte, Belsatsar, re de’ Caldei, fu ucciso; 31e Dario il Medo, ricevette il regno, all’età di sessantadue anni.
1Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. 2Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them. 3Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of God’s house which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them. 4They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. 5In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand came out and wrote near the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another. 7The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whoever shall read this writing, and show me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. 8Then came in all the king’s wise men; but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation. 9Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his face was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed. 10The queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: the queen spoke and said, O king, live forever; don’t let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your face be changed. 11There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar your father, the king, your father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers; 12because an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation. 13Then was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Are you that Daniel, who are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah? 14I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 15Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing. 16But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations, and dissolve doubts; now if you can read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. 17Then Daniel answered before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation. 18You, king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty: 19and because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he killed, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down. 20But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: 21and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the animals’, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky; until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that he sets up over it whomever he will. 22You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this, 23but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified. 24Then was the part of the hand sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed. 25This is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. 26This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has numbered your kingdom, and brought it to an end; 27TEKEL; you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting. 28PERES; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. 29Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. 30In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain. 31Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.
1De koning Belsazar maakte een groten maaltijd voor zijn duizend geweldigen, en hij dronk wijn voor die duizend. 2Als Belsazar den wijn geproefd had, zeide hij, dat men de gouden en zilveren vaten voorbrengen zou, die zijn vader Nebukadnezar uit den tempel, die te Jeruzalem geweest was, weggevoerd had; opdat de koning en zijn geweldigen, zijn vrouwen en zijn bijwijven uit dezelve dronken. 3Toen bracht men voor de gouden vaten, die men uit den tempel van het huis Gods, die te Jeruzalem geweest was, weggevoerd had; en de koning en zijn geweldigen, zijn vrouwen, en zijn bijwijven dronken daaruit. 4Zij dronken den wijn, en prezen de gouden, en de zilveren, de koperen, de ijzeren, de houten en de stenen goden. 5Ter zelfder ure kwamen er vingeren van eens mensen hand voort, die schreven tegenover den kandelaar, op de kalk van den wand van het koninklijk paleis, en de koning zag het deel der hand, die daar schreef. 6Toen veranderde zich de glans des konings, en zijn gedachten verschrikten hem; en de banden zijner lendenen werden los, en zijn knieen stieten tegen elkander aan. 7Zodat de koning met kracht riep dat men de sterrekijkers, de Chaldeen en de waarzeggers inbrengen zou; en de koning antwoordde en zeide tot de wijzen van Babel: Alle man, die dit schrift lezen, en deszelfs uitlegging mij te kennen zal geven, die zal met purper gekleed worden, met een gouden keten om zijn hals, en hij zal de derde heerser in dit koninkrijk zijn. 8Toen kwamen al de wijzen des konings in; maar zij konden dit schrift niet lezen, noch den koning deszelfs uitlegging bekend maken. 9Toen verschrikte de koning Belsazar zeer, en zijn glans werd aan hem veranderd, en zijn geweldigen werden verbaasd. 10Om deze woorden des konings en zijner geweldigen, ging de koningin in het huis des maaltijds. De koningin sprak en zeide: O koning, leef in eeuwigheid! laat u uw gedachten niet verschrikken, en uw glans niet veranderd worden. 11Er is een man in uw koninkrijk, in wien de geest der heilige goden is, want in de dagen uws vaders is bij hem gevonden licht, en verstand, en wijsheid, gelijk de wijsheid der goden is; daarom stelde hem de koning Nebukadnezar, uw vader, tot een overste der tovenaars, der sterrekijkers, der Chaldeen, en der waarzeggers, uw vader, o koning! 12Omdat een voortreffelijke geest, en wetenschap, en verstand van een, die dromen uitlegt, en der aanwijzing van raadselen, en van een, die knopen ontbindt, gevonden werd in hem, in Daniel, dien de koning den naam van Beltsazar gaf; laat nu Daniel geroepen worden, die zal de uitlegging te kennen geven. 13Toen werd Daniel voor den koning ingebracht. De koning antwoordde en zeide tot Daniel: Zijt gij die Daniel, een uit de gevankelijk weggevoerden van Juda, die de koning, mijn vader, uit Juda gebracht heeft? 14Ik heb toch van u gehoord, dat de geest der goden in u is, en dat er licht, en verstand, en voortreffelijke wijsheid in u gevonden wordt. 15Nu, zo zijn voor mij ingebracht de wijzen en de sterrekijkers, om dit schrift te lezen, en deszelfs uitlegging mij bekend te maken; maar zij kunnen de uitlegging dezer woorden niet te kennen geven. 16Doch van u heb ik gehoord, dat gij uitleggingen kunt geven, en knopen ontbinden; nu, indien gij dit schrift zult kunnen lezen, en deszelfs uitlegging mij bekend maken, gij zult met purper bekleed worden, met een gouden keten om uw hals, en gij zult de derde heerser in dit koninkrijk zijn. 17Toen antwoordde Daniel, en zeide voor den koning: Heb uw gaven voor uzelven, en geef uw vereringen aan een ander; ik zal nochtans het schrift voor den koning lezen, en de uitlegging zal ik hem bekend maken. 18Wat u aangaat, o koning! de allerhoogste God heeft uw vader Nebukadnezar het koninkrijk, en grootheid, en eer, en heerlijkheid gegeven; 19En vanwege de grootheid, die Hij hem gegeven had, beefden en sidderden alle volken, natien en tongen voor hem; dien hij wilde, doodde hij, en dien hij wilde, behield hij in het leven, en dien hij wilde, verhoogde hij, en dien hij wilde, vernederde hij. 20Maar toen zich zijn hart verhief, en zijn geest verstijfd werd ter hovaardij, werd hij van den troon zijns koninkrijks afgestoten, en men nam de eer van hem weg. 21En hij werd van de kinderen der mensen verstoten, en zijn hart werd den beesten gelijk gemaakt, en zijn woning was bij de woudezelen; men gaf hem gras te smaken gelijk den ossen; en zijn lichaam werd van den dauw des hemels nat gemaakt, totdat hij bekende, dat God, de Allerhoogste, Heerser is over de koninkrijken der mensen, en over dezelve stelt, wien Hij wil. 22En gij, Belsazar, zijn zoon! hebt uw hart niet vernederd, alhoewel gij dit alles wel geweten hebt. 23Maar gij hebt u verheven tegen den Heere des hemels, en men heeft de vaten van Zijn huis voor u gebracht, en gij, en uw geweldigen, uw vrouwen, en uw bijwijven hebben wijn uit dezelve gedronken, en de goden van zilver en goud, koper, ijzer, hout en steen, die niet zien, noch horen, noch weten, hebt gij geprezen; maar dien God, in Wiens hand uw adem is, en bij Wien al uw paden zijn, hebt gij niet verheerlijkt. 24Toen is dat deel der hand van Hem gezonden, en dit schrift getekend geworden. 25Dit nu is het schrift, dat daar getekend is: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. 26Dit is de uitlegging dezer woorden: MENE; God heeft uw koninkrijk geteld, en Hij heeft het voleind. 27TEKEL; gij zijt in weegschalen gewogen; en gij zijt te licht gevonden. 28PERES; uw koninkrijk is verdeeld, en het is den Meden en den Perzen gegeven. 29Toen beval Belsazar, en zij bekleedden Daniel met purper, met een gouden keten om zijn hals, en zij riepen overluid van hem, dat hij de derde heerser in dat koninkrijk was. 30In dienzelfden nacht, werd Belsazar, der Chaldeen koning, gedood. 31Darius, de Meder nu, ontving het koninkrijk, omtrent twee en zestig jaren oud zijnde.
