1Allora Eliseo disse: "Ascoltate la parola dell’Eterno! Così dice l’Eterno: Domani, a quest’ora, alla porta di Samaria, la misura di fior di farina si avrà per un siclo, e le due misure d’orzo si avranno per un siclo". 2Ma il capitano sul cui braccio il re s’appoggiava, rispose all’uomo di Dio: "Ecco, anche se l’Eterno facesse delle finestre in cielo, potrebbe mai avvenire una cosa siffatta?" Eliseo rispose: "Ebbene, lo vedrai con gli occhi tuoi, ma non ne mangerai". 3Or v’erano quattro lebbrosi presso all’entrata della porta, i quali dissero tra di loro: "Perché vogliam noi restar qui finché moriamo? 4Se diciamo: Entriamo in città in città c’è la fame, e noi vi morremo; se restiamo qui, morremo lo stesso. Or dunque venite, andiamoci a buttare nel campo dei Siri; se ci lascian vivere, vivremo; se ci dànno la morte, morremo". 5E, sull’imbrunire, si mossero per andare al campo dei Siri; e come furon giunti all’estremità del campo dei Siri, ecco che non v’era alcuno. 6Il Signore avea fatto udire nel campo dei Siri un rumor di carri, un rumor di cavalli, un rumor di grande esercito, sì che i Siri avean detto fra di loro: "Ecco, il re d’Israele ha assoldato contro di noi i re degli Hittei e i re degli Egiziani, perché vengano ad assalirci". 7E s’eran levati, ed eran fuggiti sull’imbrunire, abbandonando le loro tende, i loro cavalli, i loro asini, e il campo così com’era; eran fuggiti per salvarsi la vita. 8Que’ lebbrosi, giunti che furono all’estremità del campo, entrarono in una tenda, mangiarono, bevvero, e portaron via argento, oro, vesti, e andarono a nascondere ogni cosa. Poi tornarono, entrarono in un’altra tenda, e anche di là portaron via roba, che andarono a nascondere. 9Ma poi dissero fra di loro: "Noi non facciamo bene; questo è giorno di buone novelle, e noi ci tacciamo! Se aspettiamo finché si faccia giorno, sarem tenuti per colpevoli. Or dunque venite, andiamo ad informare la casa del re". 10Così partirono, chiamarono i guardiani della porta di città, e li informarono della cosa, dicendo: "Siamo andati al campo dei Siri, ed ecco che non v’è alcuno, né vi s’ode voce d’uomo; non vi son che i cavalli attaccati, gli asini attaccati, e le tende intatte". 11Allora i guardiani chiamarono, e fecero saper la cosa alla gente del re dentro il palazzo. 12E il re si levò nella notte, e disse ai suoi servi: "Vi voglio dire io quel che ci hanno fatto i Siri. Sanno che patiamo la fame; sono quindi usciti dal campo a nascondersi per la campagna, dicendo: Come usciranno dalla città, li prenderemo vivi, ed entreremo nella città". 13Uno de’ suoi servi gli rispose: "Ti prego, si prendan cinque de’ cavalli che rimangono ancora nella città guardate! son come tutta la moltitudine d’Israele che v’è rimasta; son come tutta la moltitudine d’Israele che va in consunzione! e mandiamo a vedere di che si tratta". 14Presero dunque due carri coi loro cavalli, e il re mandò degli uomini in traccia dell’esercito dei Siri, dicendo: "Andate e vedete". 15E quelli andarono in traccia de’ Siri, fino al Giordano; ed ecco, tutta la strada era piena di vesti e gli oggetti, che i Siri avean gettati via nella loro fuga precipitosa. E i messi tornarono e riferiron tutto al re. 16Allora il popolo uscì fuori, e saccheggiò il campo dei Siri; e una misura di fior di farina si ebbe per un siclo e due misure d’orzo per un siclo, secondo la parola dell’Eterno. 17Il re aveva affidato la guardia della porta al capitano sul cui braccio s’appoggiava; ma questo capitano fu calpestato dalla folla presso la porta e morì, come avea detto l’uomo di Dio, quando avea parlato al re ch’era sceso a trovarlo. 18Difatti, quando l’uomo di Dio avea parlato al re dicendo: "Domani, a quest’ora, alla porta di Samaria, due misure d’orzo s’avranno per un siclo e una misura di fior di farina per un siclo", 19quel capitano avea risposto all’uomo di Dio e gli avea detto: "Ecco, anche se l’Eterno facesse delle finestre in cielo, potrebbe mai avvenire una cosa siffatta?" Ed Eliseo gli avea detto: "Ebbene, lo vedrai con gli occhi tuoi, ma non ne mangerai". 20E così gli avvenne: fu calpestato dalla folla presso la porta, e morì.
1Elisha said, “Hear Yahweh’s word. Thus says Yahweh, ‘Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’” 2Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, “Behold, if Yahweh made windows in heaven, could this thing be?” He said, “Behold, you shall see it with your eyes, but shall not eat of it.” 3Now there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate. They said one to another, “Why do we sit here until we die? 4If we say, ‘We will enter into the city,’ then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. If we sit still here, we also die. Now therefore come, and let us surrender to the army of the Syrians. If they save us alive, we will live; and if they kill us, we will only die.” 5They rose up in the twilight, to go to the camp of the Syrians. When they had come to the outermost part of the camp of the Syrians, behold, there was no man there. 6For the Lord had made the army of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great army: and they said one to another, Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come on us. 7Therefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their donkeys, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life. 8When these lepers came to the outermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and ate and drink, and carried there silver, and gold, and clothing, and went and hid it. Then they came back, and entered into another tent, and carried there also, and went and hid it. 9Then they said one to another, “We aren’t doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we keep silent. If we wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let us go and tell the king’s household.” 10So they came and called to the porter of the city; and they told them, saying, “We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but the horses tied, and the donkeys tied, and the tents as they were.” 11He called the porters; and they told it to the king’s household within. 12The king arose in the night, and said to his servants, “I will now show you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry. Therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive, and get into the city.’” 13One of his servants answered, “Please let some take five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city. Behold, they are like all the multitude of Israel who are left in it. Behold, they are like all the multitude of Israel who are consumed. Let us send and see.” 14They took therefore two chariots with horses; and the king sent after the army of the Syrians, saying, “Go and see.” 15They went after them to the Jordan; and behold, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. The messengers returned, and told the king. 16The people went out, and plundered the camp of the Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to Yahweh’s word. 17The king appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to be in charge of the gate: and the people trod on him in the gate, and he died as the man of God had said, who spoke when the king came down to him. 18It happened as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be tomorrow about this time in the gate of Samaria”; 19and that captain answered the man of God, and said, “Now, behold, if Yahweh should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be?” and he said, “Behold, you shall see it with your eyes, but shall not eat of it.” 20It happened like that to him; for the people trod on him in the gate, and he died.
1Toen zeide Elisa: Hoort het woord des HEEREN; zo zegt de HEERE: Morgen omtrent dezen tijd zal een maat meelbloem verkocht worden voor een sikkel, en twee maten gerst voor een sikkel, in de poort van Samaria. 2Maar een hoofdman, op wiens hand de koning leunde, antwoordde den man Gods, en zeide: Zie, zo de HEERE vensteren in den hemel maakte, zou die zaak kunnen geschieden? En hij zeide: Zie, gij zult het met uw ogen zien, doch daarvan niet eten. 3Er waren nu vier melaatse mannen voor de deur der poort; die zeiden, de een tot den ander: Wat blijven wij hier, totdat wij sterven? 4Indien wij zeggen: Laat ons in de stad komen, zo is de honger in de stad, en wij zullen daar sterven, en indien wij hier blijven, wij zullen ook sterven; nu dan, komt, en laat ons in het leger der Syriers vallen; indien zij ons laten leven, wij zullen leven; en indien zij ons doden, wij zullen maar sterven. 5En zij stonden op in de schemering, om in het leger der Syriers te komen. Toen zij aan het uiterste van het leger der Syriers kwamen, ziet, toen was er niemand. 6Want de HEERE had het heir der Syriers doen horen een geluid van wagenen, en een geluid van paarden, het geluid ener grote heirkracht; zodat zij zeiden de een tot den ander: Zie, de koning van Israel heeft tegen ons gehuurd de koningen der Hethieten, en de koningen der Egyptenaren, om tegen ons te komen. 7Derhalve hadden zij zich opgemaakt, en waren in de schemering gevloden, en hadden hun tenten gelaten, en hun paarden, en hun ezelen, het leger gelijk als het was; en waren gevloden om huns levens wil. 8Als nu deze melaatsen aan het uiterste des legers kwamen, zo gingen zij in een tent, en aten en dronken, en namen van daar zilver, en goud, en klederen, en gingen henen, en verborgen het; daarna keerden zij weder, en kwamen in een andere tent, namen van daar ook, en gingen henen, en verborgen het. 9Toen zeiden zij, de een tot den ander: Wij doen niet recht; deze dag is een dag van goede boodschap, en wij zwijgen stil. Indien wij vertoeven tot den lichten morgen, zo zal ons de ongerechtigheid vinden; daarom nu, komt, laat ons gaan, en dit aan het huis des konings boodschappen. 10Zo kwamen zij, en riepen tot den poortier der stad, en boodschapten hun, zeggende: Wij zijn gekomen tot het leger der Syriers, en ziet, niemand was daar, noch eens mensen stem; maar paarden aangebonden, en ezels aangebonden, en tenten, gelijk als zij waren. 11En hij riep de poortiers; en zij deden de boodschap binnen in het huis des konings. 12En de koning stond op in den nacht, en zeide tot zijn knechten: Ik zal u nu te kennen geven, wat de Syriers ons gedaan hebben; zij weten, dat wij hongerig zijn; daarom zijn zij uit het leger gegaan, om zich in het veld te versteken, zeggende: Als zij uit de stad gegaan zullen zijn, dan zullen wij hen levend grijpen, en wij zullen in de stad komen. 13Toen antwoordde een van zijn knechten, en zeide: Dat men toch neme vijf van de overige paarden, die hierbinnen overgebleven zijn (zie, zij zijn als de gehele menigte der Israelieten, die hierbinnen overgebleven zijn; zie, zij zijn als de gehele menigte der Israelieten, die vergaan zijn), laat ons die zenden, en zien. 14Zij namen dan twee wagenpaarden. En hij had gezegd: Zie, gij zult het met uw ogen zien, doch daarvan niet eten. 20Even alzo geschiedde hem, want het volk vertrad hem in de poort, dat hij stierf.
