1Io esorto dunque, prima d’ogni altra cosa, che si facciano supplicazioni, preghiere, intercessioni, ringraziamenti per tutti gli uomini, 2per i re e per tutti quelli che sono in autorità, affinché possiamo menare una vita tranquilla e quieta, in ogni pietà e onestà. 3Questo è buono e accettevole nel cospetto di Dio, nostro Salvatore, 4il quale vuole che tutti gli uomini siano salvati e vengano alla conoscenza della verità. 5Poiché v’è un solo Dio ed anche un solo mediatore fra Dio e gli uomini, Cristo Gesù uomo, 6il quale diede se stesso qual prezzo di riscatto per tutti; fatto che doveva essere attestato a suo tempo, 7e per attestare il quale io fui costituito banditore ed apostolo (io dico il vero, non mentisco), dottore dei Gentili in fede e in verità. 8Io voglio dunque che gli uomini faccian orazione in ogni luogo, alzando mani pure, senz’ira e senza dispute. 9Similmente che le donne si adornino d’abito convenevole, con verecondia e modestia: non di trecce d’oro o di perle o di vesti sontuose, 10ma d’opere buone, come s’addice a donne che fanno professione di pietà. 11La donna impari in silenzio con ogni sottomissione. 12Poiché non permetto alla donna d’insegnare, né d’usare autorità sul marito, ma stia in silenzio. 13Perché Adamo fu formato il primo, e poi Eva; 14e Adamo non fu sedotto; ma la donna, essendo stata sedotta, cadde in trasgressione 15nondimeno sarà salvata partorendo figliuoli, se persevererà nella fede, nell’amore e nella santificazione con modestia.
1I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; 4who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all; the testimony in its own times; 7to which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth in Christ, not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 8I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting. 9In the same way, that women also adorn themselves in decent clothing, with modesty and propriety; not just with braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing; 10but (which becomes women professing godliness) with good works. 11Let a woman learn in quietness with all subjection. 12But I don’t permit a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness. 13For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14Adam wasn’t deceived, but the woman, being deceived, has fallen into disobedience; 15but she will be saved through her childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and sanctification with sobriety.
1Ik vermaan dan voor alle dingen, dat gedaan worden smekingen, gebeden, voorbiddingen, dankzeggingen, voor alle mensen; 2Voor koningen, en allen, die in hoogheid zijn; opdat wij een gerust en stil leven leiden mogen in alle godzaligheid en eerbaarheid. 3Want dat is goed en aangenaam voor God, onzen Zaligmaker; 4Welke wil, dat alle mensen zalig worden, en tot kennis der waarheid komen. 5Want er is een God, er is ook een Middelaar Gods en der mensen, de Mens Christus Jezus; 6Die Zichzelven gegeven heeft tot een rantsoen voor allen, zijnde de getuigenis te zijner tijd; 7Waartoe ik gesteld ben een prediker en apostel (ik zeg de waarheid in Christus, ik lieg niet), een leraar der heidenen, in geloof en waarheid. 8Ik wil dan, dat de mannen bidden in alle plaatsen, opheffende heilige handen, zonder toorn en twisting. 9Desgelijks ook, dat de vrouwen, in een eerbaar gewaad, met schaamte en matigheid zichzelven versieren, niet in vlechtingen des haars, of goud, of paarlen, of kostelijke kleding; 10Maar (hetwelk de vrouwen betaamt, die de godvruchtigheid belijden) door goede werken. 11Een vrouw late zich leren in stilheid, in alle onderdanigheid. 12Doch ik laat de vrouw niet toe, dat zij lere, noch over den man heerse, maar wil, dat zij in stilheid zij. 13Want Adam is eerst gemaakt, daarna Eva. 14En Adam is niet verleid geworden; maar de vrouw, verleid zijnde, is in overtreding geweest. 15Doch zij zal zalig worden in kinderen te baren, zo zij blijft in het geloof, en liefde, en heiligmaking, met matigheid.
