1“Sekarang, orang Israel dengarkanlah ketetapan dan perintah yang kuajarkan kepadamu, taatilah itu supaya kamu hidup dan dapat memasuki dan memiliki tanah yang diberikan TUHAN, Allah nenek moyangmu, kepadamu. 2Janganlah kamu menambahi atau mengurangi apa yang telah kuperintahkan kepadamu. Kamu harus menaati seluruh perintah TUHAN, Allahmu, yang telah kusampaikan kepadamu. 3Kamu telah melihat yang telah dilakukan oleh TUHAN di Baal-Peor. TUHAN, Allahmu, membinasakan seluruh orang yang mengikuti Baal-Peor di tempat itu. 4Akan tetapi, kalian semua yang setia kepada TUHAN, Allahmu, masih hidup hari ini. 5Aku telah mengajarmu tentang ketetapan dan perintah yang diperintahkan kepadaku oleh TUHAN, Allahku, supaya kamu menaatinya di negeri yang akan kamu masuki dan miliki. 6Taatilah semuanya itu tunjukkan kepada bangsa-bangsa lain bahwa kamu bijaksana dan memiliki akal budi. Mereka akan mendengar tentang peraturan-peraturan ini dan berkata, ‘Benar, bangsa yang besar ini bijaksana dan berakal budi.’ 7Tidak ada bangsa lain yang mempunyai ilah yang begitu dekat seperti TUHAN, Allah kita, setiap kita berseru kepada-Nya! 8Tidak ada bangsa besar yang memiliki ketetapan dan peraturan yang adil seperti seluruh ketetapan dan peraturan yang kuberikan kepadamu hari ini. 9Namun, kamu harus menjaga diri dan berhati-hatilah! Jangan sampai kamu melupakan hal-hal yang telah kamu lihat dengan matamu sendiri. Jangan sampai semua itu hilang dari hatimu seumur hidupmu. Ceritakanlah hal itu kepada anak cucumu. 10Pada waktu kamu berdiri di hadapan TUHAN, Allahmu, di Gunung Horeb. TUHAN berfirman kepadaku, ‘Kumpulkanlah mereka di hadapan-Ku, biarlah mereka mendengarkan yang harus Kukatakan. Maka mereka akan belajar untuk takut akan Aku selama mereka hidup. Dan, mereka juga akan mengajarkan kepada anak-anaknya.’ 11Kemudian, kamu mendekat dan berdiri di kaki gunung itu. Gunung itu terbakar dengan api yang membubung ke langit. Ada awan hitam yang tebal dan gelap. 12Dari tengah-tengah api itu, TUHAN berfirman kepadamu. Kamu mendengar suara-Nya tetapi kamu tidak melihat sesuatu, hanya suara yang terdengar. 13Dia menyampaikan kepadamu perjanjian-Nya, yang Dia perintahkan kepadamu, yaitu sepuluh perintah untuk kamu taati, yang ditulis-Nya di atas dua loh batu. 14TUHAN juga menyuruh aku untuk mengajarkan kepadamu ketetapan dan peraturan lain yang harus kamu taati di negeri yang akan kamu ambil dan tempati. 15Ketika TUHAN berfirman kepadamu dari api di atas Gunung Horeb, kamu tidak melihat rupa Allah. Oleh sebab itu, berhati-hatilah. 16Jangan berbuat dosa dengan membuat berhala atau patung yang berbentuk makhluk hidup, apa pun itu baik yang menyerupai seorang laki-laki atau perempuan, 17atau seperti binatang di darat, atau berupa burung di udara. 18Jangan buat berhala yang mirip dengan apa pun yang merayap di atas tanah, atau yang menyerupai ikan di dalam air. 19Janganlah kamu memandang ke langit dan melihat baik matahari, bulan, bintang-bintang serta melihat semesta alam, jangan menyembah dan melayaninya. Semua itu diberikan TUHAN, Allahmu, kepada setiap bangsa di seluruh kolong langit ini. 20Sebab TUHAN telah membawamu keluar dari dapur peleburan, yaitu Mesir, dan menjadikan umat milik-Nya sampai hari ini. 21TUHAN murka kepadaku karena kamu. Dia bersumpah bahwa aku tidak akan menyeberang Sungai Yordan dan tidak akan memasuki tanah yang baik yang diberikan TUHAN, Allahmu menjadi milik pusakamu. 22Aku akan mati di negeri ini dan tidak dapat menyeberang Sungai Yordan sedangkan kamu akan menyeberang dan mewarisi tanah yang baik itu dan tinggal di sana. 23Berjaga-jagalah agar kamu tidak melupakan perjanjian TUHAN, Allahmu yang telah mengikatmu. Kamu harus mematuhi perintah TUHAN, Allahmu dan jangan membuat patung yang menyerupai apa pun. 24Karena TUHAN, Allahmu adalah api yang menghanguskan dan Allah yang pencemburu. 25Bila kamu mempunyai anak-cucu dan tua di sana. Lalu, kamu merusak dirimu sendiri dengan membuat patung yang menyerupai apa pun dan melakukan segala kejahatan di mata TUHAN, Allahmu. Dengan demikian, kamu menyebabkan sakit hati-Nya. 26Langit dan bumi adalah saksiku! Jika kamu melakukan yang jahat itu, kamu akan segera binasa di tanah yang kau seberangi melalui Sungai Yordan itu. Kamu tidak akan lama tinggal di sana dan akan binasa semua! 27TUHAN akan menceraiberaikanmu di antara bangsa-bangsa dan hanya sedikit dari antara kamu yang masih tinggal di negeri di mana TUHAN membuangmu. 28Di sana, kamu akan menyembah kepada ilah yang dibuat oleh manusia yang dibuat dari kayu dan batu yang tidak dapat melihat, mendengar, makan, atau mencium! 29Namun, di sanalah kamu akan mencari TUHAN, Allahmu. Dan, kamu akan menemukan-Nya, apabila kamu mencari-Nya dengan segenap hatimu dan jiwamu. 30Jika kamu berada dalam kesulitan dan semuanya itu menimpa dirimu di kemudian hari, maka kamu akan kembali kepada TUHAN, Allahmu dan mendengarkan suara-Nya. 31TUHAN, Allahmu adalah Allah Pengasih! Dia tidak akan meninggalkan atau membinasakanmu, tidak pula mengingkari perjanjian yang telah dibuat-Nya dengan nenek moyangmu.” 32Tanyakanlah dari ujung langit ke ujung langit yang lain tentang zaman dahulu, yang telah ada sebelum kamu. Sejak Allah menciptakan manusia di bumi, pernahkah terjadi hal sebesar ini atau pernahkah terdengar hal seperti ini? 33Pernahkah suatu bangsa mendengar suara Allah yang berbicara dari tengah api, seperti yang telah kamu dengar, dan tetap hidup? 34Apakah ada ilah lain yang pernah berusaha mengambil dan memiliki umat untuk dirinya sendiri dari tengah-tengah bangsa lain? Kamu sendiri telah melihat yang dilakukan TUHAN, Allah terhadapmu di Mesir. Kedahsyatan, tanda-tanda, mukjizat, perang dan segala kengerian yang terjadi di depan matamu. 35Kepadamu telah dinyatakan agar kamu mengetahui bahwa TUHAN itulah Allah. Tidak ada selain Dia. 36Dia membiarkan kamu mendengar suara-Nya agar Dia dapat mengajar kepadamu. Di atas bumi, Dia memperlihatkan api-Nya yang besar dan kamu mendengarkan perkataan-Nya dari tengah-tengah api itu. 37Dia mengasihi nenek moyangmu. Dia memilihmu, yaitu keturunan mereka dengan membawamu keluar dari Mesir dengan kuasa-Nya yang besar. 38Dia mengusir bangsa-bangsa yang lebih besar, dan lebih berkuasa darimu untuk membawamu masuk ke daerah mereka. Dia memberikan negeri mereka yang kamu tinggali hari ini. 39Pada hari ini, ketahuilah dan ingatlah, bahwa TUHAN adalah Allah atas langit dan bumi. Tidak ada yang lain! 40Kamu harus menaati segala hukum dan perintah-Nya yang kuberikan kepadamu hari ini, supaya hidupmu dan anak-anakmu baik adanya, dan kamu terus hidup di tanah yang diberikan TUHAN, Allahmu, kepadamu untuk selamanya. 41Kemudian, Musa memilih tiga kota di sebelah timur Sungai Yordan. 42Siapa pun yang membunuh seseorang dengan tidak sengaja dan tidak memusuhinya dapat melarikan diri ke salah satu dari kota-kota itu dan dia tidak akan dibunuh. 43Bezer di dataran tinggi untuk suku Ruben, Ramot di Gilead untuk suku Gad, dan Golan di Basan untuk suku Manasye. 44Inilah Taurat yang dijelaskan Musa kepada orang Israel. 45Inilah peringatan, hukum, dan peraturan yang dikatakan Musa kepada Israel setelah mereka keluar dari Mesir 46di seberang Sungai Yordan, di lembah seberang Bet-Peor, di tanah Sihon, raja Amori yang tinggal di Hesybon. Musa dan orang Israel mengalahkan Sihon ketika mereka keluar dari Mesir. 47Mereka menduduki tanah itu dan juga tanah milik Og, raja Basan. Kedua Raja Amori itu tinggal di sebelah timur Sungai Yordan. 48Tanah ini terbentang dari Aroer, di tepi Sungai Arnon sampai ke Gunung Sion, yaitu Gunung Hermon, 49mencakup juga seluruh lembah di sebelah timur Sungai Yordan, sampai ke sebelah selatan terus ke Laut Araba, ke kaki Gunung Pisga.
1Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess the land which Yahweh, the God of your fathers, gives you. 2You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God which I command you. 3Your eyes have seen what Yahweh did because of Baal Peor; for all the men who followed Baal Peor, Yahweh your God has destroyed them from among you. 4But you who were faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive this day. 5Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as Yahweh my God commanded me, that you should do so in the midst of the land where you go in to possess it. 6Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes, and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” 7For what great nation is there, that has a god so near to them, as Yahweh our God is whenever we call on him? 8What great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? 9Only be careful, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your children and your children’s children; 10the day that you stood before Yahweh your God in Horeb, when Yahweh said to me, “Assemble the people to me, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.” 11You came near and stood under the mountain. The mountain burned with fire to the heart of the sky, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness. 12Yahweh spoke to you out of the midst of the fire: you heard the voice of words, but you saw no form; you only heard a voice. 13He declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments. He wrote them on two stone tablets. 14Yahweh commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it. 15Be very careful, for you saw no kind of form on the day that Yahweh spoke to you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire, 16lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself an engraved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, 17the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky, 18the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth; 19and lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the army of the sky, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which Yahweh your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky. 20But Yahweh has taken you, and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to him a people of inheritance, as at this day. 21Furthermore Yahweh was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not go in to that good land, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance; 22but I must die in this land. I must not go over the Jordan; but you shall go over, and possess that good land. 23Be careful, lest you forget the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he made with you, and make yourselves an engraved image in the form of anything which Yahweh your God has forbidden you. 24For Yahweh your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God. 25When you shall father children, and children’s children, and you shall have been long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make an engraved image in the form of anything, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of Yahweh your God, to provoke him to anger; 26I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you will soon utterly perish from off the land which you go over the Jordan to possess it. You will not prolong your days on it, but will utterly be destroyed. 27Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations, where Yahweh will lead you away. 28There you shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. 29But from there you shall seek Yahweh your God, and you shall find him, when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall return to Yahweh your God, and listen to his voice. 31For Yahweh your God is a merciful God. He will not fail you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them. 32For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and from the one end of the sky to the other, whether there has been anything as this great thing is, or has been heard like it? 33Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live? 34Or has God tried to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35It was shown to you so that you might know that Yahweh is God. There is no one else besides him. 36Out of heaven he made you to hear his voice, that he might instruct you. On earth he made you to see his great fire; and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. 37Because he loved your fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt; 38to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as at this day. 39Know therefore this day, and lay it to your heart, that Yahweh himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. There is no one else. 40You shall keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land, which Yahweh your God gives you, forever. 41Then Moses set apart three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise; 42that the man slayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unawares, and didn’t hate him in time past; and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live: 43Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites. 44This is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel. 45These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spoke to the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt, 46beyond the Jordan, in the valley over against Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel struck, when they came out of Egypt. 47They took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise; 48from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, even to Mount Sion (the same is Hermon), 49and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
1Nu dan, Israel! hoor naar de inzettingen en naar de rechten, die ik ulieden lere te doen; opdat gij leeft, en henen inkomt, en erft het land, dat de HEERE, uwer vaderen God, u geeft. 2Gij zult tot dit woord, dat ik u gebiede, niet toedoen, ook daarvan niet afdoen; opdat gij bewaart de geboden van den HEERE, uw God, die ik u gebiede. 3Uw ogen hebben gezien, wat God om Baal-Peor gedaan heeft; want alle man, die Baal-Peor navolgde, dien heeft de HEERE, uw God, uit het midden van u verdaan. 4Gij daarentegen, die den HEERE, uw God, aanhingt, gij zijt heden allen levende. 5Ziet, ik heb u geleerd de inzettingen en rechten, gelijk als de HEERE, mijn God, mij geboden heeft; opdat gij alzo doet in het midden des lands, waar gij naar toe gaat, om het te erven. 6Behoudt ze dan, en doet ze; want dat zal uw wijsheid en uw verstand zijn voor de ogen der volken, die al deze inzettingen horen zullen, en zeggen: Dit groot volk alleen is een wijs en verstandig volk! 7Want wat groot volk is er, hetwelk de goden zo nabij zijn als de HEERE, onze God, zo dikwijls als wij Hem aanroepen? 8En wat groot volk is er, dat zo rechtvaardige inzettingen en rechten heeft, als deze ganse wet is, die ik heden voor uw aangezicht geef? 9Alleenlijk wacht u, en bewaart uw ziel wel, dat gij niet vergeet de dingen, die uw ogen gezien hebben; en dat zij niet van uw hart wijken, al de dagen uws levens; en gij zult ze aan uw kinderen en uw kindskinderen bekend maken. 10Ten dage, als gij voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, uws Gods, aan Horeb stondt, als de HEERE tot mij zeide: Vergader Mij dit volk, en Ik zal hun Mijn woorden doen horen, die zij zullen leren, om Mij te vrezen al de dagen, die zij op den aardbodem zullen leven, en zij zullen ze hun kinderen leren; 11En gijlieden naderdet en stondt beneden dien berg; (die berg nu brandde van vuur, tot aan het midden des hemels; er was duisternis, wolken en donkerheid). 12Zo sprak de HEERE tot u uit het midden des vuurs; gij hoordet de stem der woorden; maar gij zaagt geen gelijkenis, behalve de stem. 13Toen verkondigde Hij u Zijn verbond, dat Hij u gebood te doen, de tien woorden, en schreef ze op twee stenen tafelen. 14Ook gebood mij de HEERE ter zelver tijd, dat ik u inzettingen en rechten leren zou; opdat gij die deedt in dat land, naar hetwelk gij doortrekt, om dat te erven. 15Wacht u dan wel voor uw zielen; want gij hebt geen gelijkenis gezien, ten dage als de HEERE op Horeb uit het midden des vuurs tot u sprak; 16Opdat gij u niet verderft, en maakt u iets gesnedens, de gelijkenis van enig beeld, van mannelijk of vrouwelijk gedaante, 17De gedaante van enig beest, dat op de aarde is; de gedaante van enigen gevleugelden vogel, die door den hemel vliegt; 18De gedaante van iets, dat op den aardbodem kruipt; de gedaante van enigen vis, die in het water is onder de aarde; 19Dat gij ook uw ogen niet opheft naar den hemel, en aanziet de zon, en de maan, en de sterren, des hemels ganse heir; en wordt aangedreven, dat gij u voor die buigt, en hen dient; dewelke de HEERE uw God, aan alle volken onder den gansen hemel heeft uitgedeeld. 20Maar ulieden heeft de HEERE aangenomen, en uit den ijzeroven, uit Egypte, uitgevoerd; opdat gij Hem tot een erfvolk zoudt zijn, gelijk het te dezen dage is. 21Ook vertoornde Zich de HEERE over mij, om ulieder woorden; en Hij zwoer, dat ik over de Jordaan niet zou gaan, en dat ik niet zou komen in dat goede land, dat de HEERE, uw God, u ter erfenis geven zal. 22Want ik zal in dit land sterven; ik zal over de Jordaan niet gaan; maar gij zult er overgaan, en datzelve goede land erven. 23Wacht u, dat gij het verbond des HEEREN, uws Gods, hetwelk Hij met u gemaakt heeft, niet vergeet, dat gij u een gesneden beeld zoudt maken, de gelijkenis van iets, dat de HEERE, uw God, u verboden heeft. 24Want de HEERE, uw God, is een verterend vuur, een ijverig God. 25Wanneer gij nu kinderen en kindskinderen gewonnen zult hebben, en in het land oud geworden zult zijn, en u zult verderven, dat gij gesneden beelden maakt, de gelijkenis van enig ding, en doet, wat kwaad is in de ogen des HEEREN, uws Gods, om Hem tot toorn te verwekken; 26Zo roep ik heden den hemel en de aarde tot getuige tegen ulieden, dat gij voorzeker haast zult omkomen van dat land, waar gij over de Jordaan naar toe trekt, om dat te erven; gij zult uw dagen daarin niet verlengen, maar ganselijk verdelgd worden. 27En de HEERE zal u verstrooien onder de volken; en gij zult een klein volksken in getal overblijven onder de heidenen, waar de HEERE u henen leiden zal. 28En aldaar zult gij goden dienen, die des mensen handenwerk zijn, hout en steen, die niet zien, noch horen, noch eten, noch rieken. 29Dan zult gij van daar den HEERE, uw God, zoeken, en vinden; als gij Hem zoeken zult met uw ganse hart en met uw ganse ziel. 30Wanneer gij in angst zult zijn, en u al deze dingen zullen treffen; in het laatste der dagen, dan zult gij wederkeren tot den HEERE, uw God, en Zijn stem gehoorzaam zijn. 31Want de HEERE, uw God, is een barmhartig God; Hij zal u niet verlaten, noch u verderven; en Hij zal het verbond uwer vaderen, dat Hij hun gezworen heeft, niet vergeten. 32Want, vraag toch naar de vorige dagen, die voor u geweest zijn, van dien dag af, dat God den mens op de aarde geschapen heeft, van het ene einde des hemels tot aan het andere einde des hemels, of zulk een groot ding geschied of gehoord zij, als dit: 33Of een volk gehoord hebbe de stem van God, sprekende uit het midden des vuurs, gelijk als gij gehoord hebt, en levend zij gebleven? 34Of: of God verzocht heeft te gaan, om Zich een volk uit het midden eens volks aan te nemen, door verzoekingen, door tekenen, en door wonderen, en door strijd, en door een sterke hand, en door een uitgestrekten arm, en met grote verschrikkingen; naar al hetgeen de HEERE, uw God, ulieden voor uw ogen in Egypte gedaan heeft? 35U is het getoond, opdat gij wetet, dat de HEERE die God is; er is niemand meer dan Hij alleen! 36Van den hemel heeft Hij u Zijn stem laten horen, om u te onderwijzen; en op de aarde heeft Hij u Zijn groot vuur doen zien; en gij hebt Zijn woorden uit het midden des vuurs gehoord. 37En omdat Hij uw vaderen liefhad, en hun zaad na hen verkoren had, zo heeft Hij u voor Zijn aangezicht door Zijn grote kracht uit Egypte uitgevoerd; 38Om volken, die groter en machtiger waren dan gij, voor uw aangezicht uit de bezitting te verdrijven; om u in te brengen, dat Hij u hunlieder land ter erfenis gave, als het te dezen dage is. 39Zo zult gij heden weten, en in uw hart hervatten, dat de HEERE die God is, boven in den hemel, en onder op de aarde, niemand meer! 40En gij zult houden Zijn inzettingen en Zijn geboden, die ik u heden gebiede, opdat het u en uw kinderen na u welga, en opdat gij de dagen verlengt in het land, dat de HEERE, uw God, u geeft, voor altoos. 41Toen scheidde Mozes drie steden uit, aan deze zijde van de Jordaan, tegen den opgang der zon; 42Opdat daarheen vlood de doodslager, die zijn naaste onwetende doodslaat, dien hij van gisteren en eergisteren niet haatte; dat hij in een van deze steden vlood en levend bleef; 43Bezer in de woestijn, in het effen land, voor de Rubenieten; en Ramoth in Gilead, voor de Gadieten; en Golan in Bazan, voor de Manassieten. 44Dit is nu de wet, die Mozes de kinderen Israels voorstelde: 45Dit zijn de getuigenissen, en de inzettingen, en de rechten, die Mozes sprak tot de kinderen Israels, als zij uit Egypte waren uitgetogen; 46Aan deze zijde van de Jordaan, in het dal tegenover Beth-Peor, in het land van Sihon, den koning der Amorieten, die te Hesbon woonde; welken Mozes sloeg, en de kinderen Israels, als zij uit Egypte waren uitgetogen, 47En zijn land in bezitting genomen hadden; daartoe het land van Og, koning van Bazan; twee koningen der Amorieten, die aan deze zijde van de Jordaan waren, tegen den opgang der zon; 48Van Aroer af, dat aan den oever der beek Arnon is, tot aan den berg Sion, welke is Hermon; 49En al het vlakke veld, aan deze zijde van de Jordaan, naar het oosten, tot aan de zee des vlakken velds, onder Asdoth-Pisga.
