1Or la foi est une ferme assurance des choses qu’on espère, une démonstration de celles qu’on ne voit pas. 2Pour l’avoir possédée, les anciens ont obtenu un témoignage favorable. 3C’est par la foi que nous reconnaissons que le monde a été formé par la parole de Dieu, en sorte que ce qu’on voit n’a pas été fait de choses visibles. 4C’est par la foi qu’Abel offrit à Dieu un sacrifice plus excellent que celui de Caïn ; c’est par elle qu’il fut déclaré juste, Dieu approuvant ses offrandes ; et c’est par elle qu’il parle encore, quoique mort. 5C’est par la foi qu’Énoch fut enlevé pour qu’il ne vît point la mort, et qu’il ne parut plus parce que Dieu l’avait enlevé ; car, avant son enlèvement, il avait reçu le témoignage qu’il était agréable à Dieu. 6Or sans la foi il est impossible de lui être agréable ; car il faut que celui qui s’approche de Dieu croie que Dieu existe, et qu’il est le rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent. 7C’est par la foi que Noé, divinement averti des choses qu’on ne voyait pas encore, et saisi d’une crainte respectueuse, construisit une arche pour sauver sa famille ; c’est par elle qu’il condamna le monde, et devint héritier de la justice qui s’obtient par la foi. 8C’est par la foi qu’Abraham, lors de sa vocation, obéit et partit pour un lieu qu’il devait recevoir en héritage, et qu’il partit sans savoir où il allait. 9C’est par la foi qu’il vint s’établir dans la terre promise comme dans une terre étrangère, habitant sous des tentes, ainsi qu’Isaac et Jacob, les cohéritiers de la même promesse. 10Car il attendait la cité qui a de solides fondements, celle dont Dieu est l’architecte et le constructeur. 11C’est par la foi que Sara elle-même, malgré son âge avancé , fut rendue capable d’avoir une postérité, parce qu’elle crut à la fidélité de celui qui avait fait la promesse. 12C’est pourquoi d’un seul homme, déjà usé de corps, naquit une postérité nombreuse comme les étoiles du ciel, comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer et qu’on ne peut compter. 13C’est dans la foi qu’ils sont tous morts, sans avoir obtenu les choses promises ; mais ils les ont vues et saluées de loin, reconnaissant qu’ils étaient étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre. 14Ceux qui parlent ainsi montrent qu’ils cherchent une patrie. 15S’ils avaient eu en vue celle d’où ils étaient sortis, ils auraient eu le temps d’y retourner. 16Mais maintenant ils en désirent une meilleure, c’est-à-dire une céleste. C’est pourquoi Dieu n’a pas honte d’être appelé leur Dieu, car il leur a préparé une cité. 17C’est par la foi qu’Abraham offrit Isaac, lorsqu’il fut mis à l’épreuve, et qu’il offrit son fils unique, lui qui avait reçu les promesses, 18et à qui il avait été dit : En Isaac sera nommée pour toi une postérité. 19Il pensait que Dieu est puissant, même pour ressusciter les morts ; aussi le recouvra-t-il par une sorte de résurrection. 20C’est par la foi qu’Isaac bénit Jacob et Ésaü, en vue des choses à venir. 21C’est par la foi que Jacob mourant bénit chacun des fils de Joseph, et qu’il adora, appuyé sur l’extrémité de son bâton. 22C’est par la foi que Joseph mourant fit mention de la sortie des fils d’Israël, et qu’il donna des ordres au sujet de ses os. 23C’est par la foi que Moïse, à sa naissance, fut caché pendant trois mois par ses parents, parce qu’ils virent que l’enfant était beau, et qu’ils ne craignirent pas l’ordre du roi. 24C’est par la foi que Moïse, devenu grand, refusa d’être appelé fils de la fille de Pharaon, 25aimant mieux être maltraité avec le peuple de Dieu que d’avoir pour un temps la jouissance du péché, 26regardant l’opprobre de Christ comme une richesse plus grande que les trésors de l’Égypte, car il avait les yeux fixés sur la rémunération. 27C’est par la foi qu’il quitta l’Égypte, sans être effrayé de la colère du roi ; car il se montra ferme, comme voyant celui qui est invisible. 28C’est par la foi qu’il fit la Pâque et l’aspersion du sang, afin que l’exterminateur ne touchât pas aux premiers-nés des Israélites. 29C’est par la foi qu’ils traversèrent la mer Rouge comme un lieu sec, tandis que les Égyptiens qui en firent la tentative furent engloutis. 30C’est par la foi que les murailles de Jéricho tombèrent, après qu’on en eut fait le tour pendant sept jours. 31C’est par la foi que Rahab la prostituée ne périt pas avec les rebelles, parce qu’elle avait reçu les espions avec bienveillance. 32Et que dirai-je encore ? Car le temps me manquerait pour parler de Gédéon, de Barak, de Samson, de Jephthé, de David, de Samuel, et des prophètes, 33qui, par la foi, vainquirent des royaumes, exercèrent la justice, obtinrent des promesses, fermèrent la gueule des lions, 34éteignirent la puissance du feu, échappèrent au tranchant de l’épée, guérirent de leurs maladies, furent vaillants à la guerre, mirent en fuite des armées étrangères. 35Des femmes recouvrèrent leurs morts par la résurrection ; d’autres furent livrés aux tourments, et n’acceptèrent point de délivrance, afin d’obtenir une meilleure résurrection ; 36d’autres subirent les moqueries et le fouet, les chaînes et la prison ; 37ils furent lapidés, sciés, torturés, ils moururent tués par l’épée, ils allèrent çà et là vêtus de peaux de brebis et de peaux de chèvres, dénués de tout, persécutés, maltraités, 38eux dont le monde n’était pas digne, errants dans les déserts et les montagnes, dans les cavernes et les antres de la terre. 39Tous ceux-là, à la foi desquels il a été rendu témoignage, n’ont pas obtenu ce qui leur était promis, 40Dieu ayant en vue quelque chose de meilleur pour nous, afin qu’ils ne parvinssent pas sans nous à la perfection.
1Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen. 2For by this, the elders obtained testimony. 3By faith, we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible. 4By faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had testimony given to him that he was righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and through it he, being dead, still speaks. 5By faith, Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God. 6Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him. 7By faith, Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared a ship for the saving of his house, through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. 8By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. Yes, he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his one and only son; 18even he to whom it was said, “In Isaac will your seed be called”; 19concluding that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. 36Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment. 37They were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated 38(of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth. 39These all, having had testimony given to them through their faith, didn’t receive the promise, 40God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
1Het geloof nu is een vaste grond der dingen, die men hoopt, en een bewijs der zaken, die men niet ziet. 2Want door hetzelve hebben de ouden getuigenis bekomen. 3Door het geloof verstaan wij, dat de wereld door het woord Gods is toebereid, alzo dat de dingen, die men ziet, niet geworden zijn uit dingen, die gezien worden. 4Door het geloof heeft Abel een meerdere offerande Gode geofferd dan Kain, door hetwelk hij getuigenis bekomen heeft, dat hij rechtvaardig was, alzo God over zijn gave getuigenis gaf; en door hetzelve geloof spreekt hij nog, nadat hij gestorven is. 5Door het geloof is Enoch weggenomen geweest, opdat hij den dood niet zou zien; en hij werd niet gevonden, daarom dat hem God weggenomen had; want voor zijn wegneming heeft hij getuigenis gehad, dat hij Gode behaagde. 6Maar zonder geloof is het onmogelijk Gode te behagen. Daarom schaamt Zich God hunner niet, om hun God genaamd te worden; want Hij had hun een stad bereid. 17Door het geloof heeft Abraham, als hij verzocht werd, Izak geofferd, en hij, die de beloften ontvangen had, heeft zijn eniggeborene geofferd, 18(Tot denwelke gezegd was: In Izak zal u het zaad genoemd worden) overleggende, dat God machtig was, hem ook uit de doden te verwekken; 19Waaruit hij hem ook bij gelijkenis wedergekregen heeft. 20Door het geloof heeft Izak zijn zonen Jakob en Ezau gezegend aangaande toekomende dingen. 21Door het geloof heeft Jakob, stervende, een iegelijk der zonen van Jozef gezegend, en heeft aangebeden, leunende op het opperste van zijn staf. 22Door het geloof heeft Jozef, stervende, gemeld van den uitgang der kinderen Israels, en heeft bevel gegeven van zijn gebeente. 23Door het geloof werd Mozes, toen hij geboren was, drie maanden lang van zijn ouders verborgen, overmits zij zagen, dat het kindeken schoon was; en zij vreesden het gebod des konings niet. 24Door het geloof heeft Mozes, nu groot geworden zijnde, geweigerd een zoon van Farao's dochter genoemd te worden; 25Verkiezende liever met het volk van God kwalijk gehandeld te worden, dan voor een tijd de genieting der zonde te hebben; 26Achtende de versmaadheid van Christus meerderen rijkdom te zijn, dan de schatten in Egypte; want hij zag op de vergelding des loons. 27Door het geloof heeft hij Egypte verlaten, niet vrezende den toorn des konings; want hij hield zich vast, als ziende den Onzienlijke. 28Door het geloof heeft hij het pascha uitgericht, en de besprenging des bloeds, opdat de verderver der eerstgeborenen hen niet raken zou. 29Door het geloof zijn zij de Rode zee doorgegaan, als door het droge; hetwelk de Egyptenaars, ook verzoekende, zijn verdronken. 30Door het geloof zijn de muren van Jericho gevallen, als zij tot zeven dagen toe omringd waren geweest. 31Door het geloof is Rachab, de hoer, niet omgekomen met de ongehoorzamen, als zij de verspieders met vrede had ontvangen. 32En wat zal ik nog meer zeggen? Want de tijd zal mij ontbreken, zou ik verhalen van Gideon, en Barak, en Samson, en Jeftha, en David, en Samuel, en de profeten; 33Welken door het geloof koninkrijken hebben overwonnen, gerechtigheid geoefend, de beloftenissen verkregen, de muilen der leeuwen toegestopt; 34De kracht des vuurs hebben uitgeblust, de scherpte des zwaards zijn ontvloden, uit zwakheid krachten hebben gekregen, in den krijg sterk geworden zijn, heirlegers der vreemden op de vlucht hebben gebracht; 35De vrouwen hebben hare doden uit de opstanding weder gekregen; en anderen zijn uitgerekt geworden, de aangeboden verlossing niet aannemende, opdat zij een betere opstanding verkrijgen zouden. 36En anderen hebben bespottingen en geselen geproefd, en ook banden en gevangenis; 37Zijn gestenigd geworden, in stukken gezaagd, verzocht, door het zwaard ter dood gebracht; hebben gewandeld in schaapsvellen en in geitenvellen; verlaten, verdrukt, kwalijk gehandeld zijnde; 38(Welker de wereld niet waardig was) hebben in woestijnen gedoold, en op bergen, en in spelonken, en in holen der aarde. 39En deze allen, hebbende door het geloof getuigenis gehad, hebben de belofte niet verkregen; 40Alzo God wat beters over ons voorzien had, opdat zij zonder ons niet zouden volmaakt worden.
