1Ô Galates, dépourvus de sens ! qui vous a fascinés , vous, aux yeux de qui Jésus-Christ a été peint comme crucifié ? 2Voici seulement ce que je veux apprendre de vous : Est-ce par les œuvres de la loi que vous avez reçu l’Esprit, ou par la prédication de la foi ? 3Etes-vous tellement dépourvus de sens ? Après avoir commencé par l’Esprit, voulez-vous maintenant finir par la chair ? 4Avez-vous tant souffert en vain ? si toutefois c’est en vain. 5Celui qui vous accorde l’Esprit, et qui opère des miracles parmi vous, le fait-il donc par les œuvres de la loi, ou par la prédication de la foi ? 6Comme Abraham crut à Dieu, et que cela lui fut imputé à justice, 7reconnaissez donc que ce sont ceux qui ont la foi qui sont fils d’Abraham. 8Aussi l’Écriture, prévoyant que Dieu justifierait les païens par la foi, a d’avance annoncé cette bonne nouvelle à Abraham : Toutes les nations seront bénies en toi ! 9de sorte que ceux qui croient sont bénis avec Abraham le croyant. 10Car tous ceux qui s’attachent aux œuvres de la loi sont sous la malédiction ; car il est écrit : Maudit est quiconque n’observe pas tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi, et ne le met pas en pratique. 11Et que nul ne soit justifié devant Dieu par la loi, cela est évident, puisqu’il est dit : Le juste vivra par la foi. 12Or, la loi ne procède pas de la foi ; mais elle dit : Celui qui mettra ces choses en pratique vivra par elles. 13Christ nous a rachetés de la malédiction de la loi, étant devenu malédiction pour nous, car il est écrit : Maudit est quiconque est pendu au bois, - 14afin que la bénédiction d’Abraham eût pour les païens son accomplissement en Jésus-Christ, et que nous reçussions par la foi l’Esprit qui avait été promis. 15Frères (je parle à la manière des hommes), une disposition en bonne forme, bien que faite par un homme, n’est annulée par personne, et personne n’y ajoute. 16Or les promesses ont été faites à Abraham et à sa postérité. Il n’est pas dit : et aux postérités, comme s’il s’agissait de plusieurs, mais en tant qu’il s’agit d’une seule : et à ta postérité, c’est-à-dire, à Christ. 17Voici ce que j’entends : une disposition, que Dieu a confirmée antérieurement, ne peut pas être annulée, et ainsi la promesse rendue vaine, par la loi survenue quatre cent trente ans plus tard. 18Car si l’héritage venait de la loi, il ne viendrait plus de la promesse ; or, c’est par la promesse que Dieu a fait à Abraham ce don de sa grâce. 19Pourquoi donc la loi ? Elle a été donnée ensuite à cause des transgressions, jusqu’à ce que vînt la postérité à qui la promesse avait été faite ; elle a été promulguée par des anges, au moyen d’un médiateur. 20Or, le médiateur n’est pas médiateur d’un seul, tandis que Dieu est un seul. 21La loi est-elle donc contre les promesses de Dieu ? Loin de là ! S’il eût été donné une loi qui pût procurer la vie, la justice viendrait réellement de la loi. 22Mais l’Écriture a tout renfermé sous le péché, afin que ce qui avait été promis fût donné par la foi en Jésus-Christ à ceux qui croient. 23Avant que la foi vînt, nous étions enfermés sous la garde de la loi, en vue de la foi qui devait être révélée. 24Ainsi la loi a été comme un pédagogue pour nous conduire à Christ, afin que nous fussions justifiés par la foi. 25La foi étant venue, nous ne sommes plus sous ce pédagogue. 26Car vous êtes tous fils de Dieu par la foi en Jésus-Christ ; 27vous tous, qui avez été baptisés en Christ, vous avez revêtu Christ. 28Il n’y a plus ni Juif ni Grec, il n’y a plus ni esclave ni libre, il n’y a plus ni homme ni femme ; car tous vous êtes un en Jésus-Christ. 29Et si vous êtes à Christ, vous êtes donc la postérité d’Abraham, héritiers selon la promesse.
1Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly portrayed among you as crucified? 2I just want to learn this from you. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith? 3Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh? 4Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain? 5He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you, and works miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith? 6Even as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.” 7Know therefore that those who are of faith, the same are children of Abraham. 8The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.” 9So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham. 10For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them.” 11Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, “The righteous will live by faith.” 12The law is not of faith, but, “The man who does them will live by them.” 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” 14that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 15Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void, or adds to it. 16Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He doesn’t say, “To seeds”, as of many, but as of one, “To your seed”, which is Christ. 17Now I say this. A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect. 18For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by promise. 19What then is the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the seed should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one. 21Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could make alive, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law. 22But the Scriptures imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to promise.
1O gij uitzinnige Galaten, wie heeft u betoverd, dat gij der waarheid niet zoudt gehoorzaam zijn; denwelken Jezus Christus voor de ogen te voren geschilderd is geweest, onder u gekruist zijnde? 2Dit alleen wil ik van u leren: hebt gij den Geest ontvangen uit de werken der wet, of uit de prediking des geloofs? 3Zijt gij zo uitzinnig? Daar gij met den Geest begonnen zijt, voleindigt gij nu met het vlees? 4Hebt gij zoveel tevergeefs geleden? Indien maar ook tevergeefs! 5Die u dan den Geest verleent, en krachten onder u werkt, doet Hij dat uit de werken der wet, of uit de prediking des geloofs? 6Gelijkerwijs Abraham Gode geloofd heeft, en het is hem tot rechtvaardigheid gerekend; 7Zo verstaat gij dan, dat degenen, die uit het geloof zijn, Abrahams kinderen zijn. 8En de Schrift, te voren ziende, dat God de heidenen uit het geloof zou rechtvaardigen, heeft te voren aan Abraham het Evangelie verkondigd, zeggende: In u zullen al de volken gezegend worden. 9Zo dan, die uit het geloof zijn, worden gezegend met den gelovigen Abraham. 10Want zovelen als er uit de werken der wet zijn, die zijn onder den vloek; want er is geschreven: Vervloekt is een iegelijk, die niet blijft in al hetgeen geschreven is in het boek der wet, om dat te doen. 11En dat niemand door de wet gerechtvaardigd wordt voor God, is openbaar; want de rechtvaardige zal uit het geloof leven. 12Doch de wet is niet uit het geloof; maar de mens, die deze dingen doet, zal door dezelve leven. 13Christus heeft ons verlost van den vloek der wet, een vloek geworden zijnde voor ons; want er is geschreven: Vervloekt is een iegelijk, die aan het hout hangt. 14Opdat de zegening van Abraham tot de heidenen komen zou in Christus Jezus, en opdat wij de belofte des Geestes verkrijgen zouden door het geloof. 15Broeders, ik spreek naar den mens: zelfs eens mensen verbond, dat bevestigd is, doet niemand te niet, of niemand doet daartoe. 16Nu zo zijn de beloftenissen tot Abraham en zijn zaad gesproken. Hij zegt niet: En den zaden, als van velen; maar als van een: En uw zade; hetwelk is Christus. 17En dit zeg ik: Het verbond, dat te voren van God bevestigd is op Christus, wordt door de wet, die na vierhonderd en dertig jaren gekomen is, niet krachteloos gemaakt, om de beloftenis te niet te doen. 18Want indien de erfenis uit de wet is, zo is zij niet meer uit de beloftenis; maar God heeft ze Abraham door de beloftenis genadiglijk gegeven. 19Waartoe is dan de wet? Zij is om der overtredingen wil daarbij gesteld, totdat het zaad zou gekomen zijn, dien het beloofd was; en zij is door de engelen besteld in de hand des Middelaars. 20En de Middelaar is niet Middelaar van een, maar God is een. 21Is dan de wet tegen de beloftenissen Gods? Dat zij verre; want indien er een wet gegeven ware, die machtig was levend te maken, zo zou waarlijk de rechtvaardigheid uit de wet zijn. 22Maar de Schrift heeft het alles onder de zonde besloten, opdat de belofte uit het geloof van Jezus Christus aan de gelovigen zou gegeven worden. 23Doch eer het geloof kwam, waren wij onder de wet in bewaring gesteld, en zijn besloten geweest tot op het geloof, dat geopenbaard zou worden. 24Zo dan, de wet is onze tuchtmeester geweest tot Christus, opdat wij uit het geloof zouden gerechtvaardigd worden. 25Maar als het geloof gekomen is, zo zijn wij niet meer onder den tuchtmeester. 26Want gij zijt allen kinderen Gods door het geloof in Christus Jezus. 27Want zovelen als gij in Christus gedoopt zijt, hebt gij Christus aangedaan. 28Daarin is noch Jood noch Griek; daarin is noch dienstbare noch vrije; daarin is geen man en vrouw; want gij allen zijt een in Christus Jezus. 29En indien gij van Christus zijt, zo zijt gij dan Abrahams zaad, en naar de beloftenis erfgenamen.
