1Quatorze ans après, je montai de nouveau à Jérusalem avec Barnabas, ayant aussi pris Tite avec moi ; 2et ce fut d’après une révélation que j’y montai. Je leur exposai l’Évangile que je prêche parmi les païens, je l’exposai en particulier à ceux qui sont les plus considérés, afin de ne pas courir ou avoir couru en vain. 3Mais Tite, qui était avec moi, et qui était Grec, ne fut pas même contraint de se faire circoncire. 4Et cela, à cause des faux frères qui s’étaient furtivement introduits et glissés parmi nous, pour épier la liberté que nous avons en Jésus-Christ, avec l’intention de nous asservir. 5Nous ne leur cédâmes pas un instant et nous résistâmes à leurs exigences, afin que la vérité de l’Évangile fût maintenue parmi vous. 6Ceux qui sont les plus considérés – quels qu’ils aient été jadis, cela ne m’importe pas : Dieu ne fait point acception de personnes, - ceux qui sont les plus considérés ne m’imposèrent rien. 7Au contraire, voyant que l’Évangile m’avait été confié pour les incirconcis, comme à Pierre pour les circoncis, - 8car celui qui a fait de Pierre l’apôtre des circoncis a aussi fait de moi l’apôtre des païens, - 9et ayant reconnu la grâce qui m’avait été accordée, Jacques, Céphas et Jean, qui sont regardés comme des colonnes, me donnèrent, à moi et à Barnabas, la main d’association, afin que nous allassions, nous vers les païens, et eux vers les circoncis. 10Ils nous recommandèrent seulement de nous souvenir des pauvres, ce que j’ai bien eu soin de faire. 11Mais lorsque Céphas vint à Antioche, je lui résistai en face, parce qu’il était répréhensible. 12En effet, avant l’arrivée de quelques personnes envoyées par Jacques, il mangeait avec les païens ; et, quand elles furent venues, il s’esquiva et se tint à l’écart, par crainte des circoncis. 13Avec lui les autres Juifs usèrent aussi de dissimulation, en sorte que Barnabas même fut entraîné par leur hypocrisie. 14Voyant qu’ils ne marchaient pas droit selon la vérité de l’Évangile, je dis à Céphas, en présence de tous : Si toi qui es Juif, tu vis à la manière des païens et non à la manière des Juifs, pourquoi forces-tu les païens à judaïser ? 15Nous, nous sommes Juifs de naissance, et non pécheurs d’entre les païens. 16Néanmoins, sachant que ce n’est pas par les œuvres de la loi que l’homme est justifié, mais par la foi en Jésus-Christ, nous aussi nous avons cru en Jésus-Christ, afin d’être justifiés par la foi en Christ et non par les œuvres de la loi, parce que nulle chair ne sera justifiée par les œuvres de la loi. 17Mais, tandis que nous cherchons à être justifiés par Christ, si nous étions aussi nous-mêmes trouvés pécheurs, Christ serait-il un ministre du péché ? Loin de là ! 18Car, si je rebâtis les choses que j’ai détruites, je me constitue moi-même un transgresseur, 19car c’est par la loi que je suis mort à la loi, afin de vivre pour Dieu. 20J’ai été crucifié avec Christ ; et si je vis, ce n’est plus moi qui vis, c’est Christ qui vit en moi ; si je vis maintenant dans la chair, je vis dans la foi au Fils de Dieu, qui m’a aimé et qui s’est livré lui-même pour moi. 21Je ne rejette pas la grâce de Dieu ; car si la justice s’obtient par la loi, Christ est donc mort en vain.
1Then after a period of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me. 2I went up by revelation, and I laid before them the Good News which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately before those who were respected, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain. 3But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. 4This was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who stole in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage; 5to whom we gave no place in the way of subjection, not for an hour, that the truth of the Good News might continue with you. 6But from those who were reputed to be important (whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God doesn’t show partiality to man)—they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me, 7but to the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the Good News for the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the Good News for the circumcision 8(for he who appointed Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision appointed me also to the Gentiles); 9and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision. 10They only asked us to remember the poor—which very thing I was also zealous to do. 11But when Peter came to Antioch, I resisted him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12For before some people came from James, he ate with the Gentiles. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. 13And the rest of the Jews joined him in his hypocrisy; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. 14But when I saw that they didn’t walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live as the Gentiles do, and not as the Jews do, why do you compel the Gentiles to live as the Jews do? 15“We, being Jews by nature, and not Gentile sinners, 16yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law. 17But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a law-breaker. 19For I, through the law, died to the law, that I might live to God. 20I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me. 21I don’t make void the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!”
1Daarna ben ik, na veertien jaren, wederom naar Jeruzalem opgegaan met Barnabas, ook Titus medegenomen hebbende. 2En ik ging op door een openbaring, en stelde hun het Evangelie voor, dat ik predik onder de heidenen; en in het bijzonder aan degenen, die in achting waren, opdat ik niet enigszins tevergeefs zou lopen of gelopen hebben. 3Maar ook Titus, die met mij was, een Griek zijnde, werd niet genoodzaakt zich te laten besnijden. 4En dat om der ingekropen valse broederen wil, die van bezijden ingekomen waren, om te verspieden onze vrijheid, die wij in Christus Jezus hebben, opdat zij ons zouden tot dienstbaarheid brengen. 5Denwelken wij ook niet een uur hebben geweken met onderwerping, opdat de waarheid van het Evangelie bij u zou verblijven. 6En van degenen, die geacht waren, wat te zijn, hoedanigen zij eertijds waren, verschilt mij niet; God neemt den persoon des mensen niet aan; want die geacht waren, hebben mij niets toegebracht. 7Maar daarentegen, als zij zagen, dat aan mij het Evangelie der voorhuid toebetrouwd was, gelijk aan Petrus dat der besnijdenis; 8(Want Die in Petrus krachtelijk wrocht tot het apostelschap der besnijdenis, Die wrocht ook krachtelijk in mij onder de heidenen); 9En als Jakobus, en Cefas, en Johannes, die geacht waren pilaren te zijn, de genade, die mij gegeven was, bekenden, gaven zij mij en Barnabas de rechter hand der gemeenschap, opdat wij tot de heidenen, en zij tot de besnijdenis zouden gaan; 10Alleenlijk, dat wij den armen zouden gedenken; hetwelk zelf ik ook benaarstigd heb te doen. 11En toen Petrus te Antiochie gekomen was, wederstond ik hem in het aangezicht, omdat hij te bestraffen was. 12Want eer sommigen van Jakobus gekomen waren, at hij mede met de heidenen; maar toen zij gekomen waren, onttrok hij zich en scheidde zichzelven af, vrezende degenen, die uit de besnijdenis waren. 13En ook de andere Joden veinsden met hem; alzo dat ook Barnabas mede afgetrokken werd door hun veinzing. 14Maar als ik zag, dat zij niet recht wandelden naar de waarheid van het Evangelie, zeide ik tot Petrus in aller tegenwoordigheid: Indien gij, die een Jood zijt, naar heidense wijze leeft, en niet naar Joodse wijze, waarom noodzaakt gij de heidenen naar de Joodse wijze te leven? 15Wij zijn van nature Joden, en niet zondaars uit de heidenen; 16Doch wetende, dat de mens niet gerechtvaardigd wordt uit de werken der wet, maar door het geloof van Jezus Christus, zo hebben wij ook in Christus Jezus geloofd, opdat wij zouden gerechtvaardigd worden uit het geloof van Christus, en niet uit de werken der wet; daarom dat uit de werken der wet geen vlees zal gerechtvaardigd worden. 17Maar indien wij, die in Christus zoeken gerechtvaardigd te worden, ook zelven zondaars bevonden worden, is dan Christus een dienaar der zonde? Dat zij verre. 18Want indien ik, hetgeen ik afgebroken heb, datzelve wederom opbouw, zo stel ik mijzelven tot een overtreder. 19Want ik ben door de wet der wet gestorven, opdat ik Gode leven zou. 20Ik ben met Christus gekruist; en ik leef, doch niet meer ik, maar Christus leeft in mij; en hetgeen ik nu in het vlees leef, dat leef ik door het geloof des Zoons van God, Die mij liefgehad heeft, en Zichzelven voor mij overgegeven heeft. 21Ik doe de genade Gods niet te niet; want indien de rechtvaardigheid door de wet is, zo is dan Christus tevergeefs gestorven.
