1Aggée, le prophète, et Zacharie, fils d’Iddo, le prophète, prophétisèrent aux Juifs qui étaient en Juda et à Jérusalem, au nom du Dieu d’Israël. 2Alors Zorobabel, fils de Schealthiel, et Josué, fils de Jotsadak, se levèrent et commencèrent à bâtir la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem. Et avec eux étaient les prophètes de Dieu, qui les assistaient. 3Dans ce même temps, Thathnaï, gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve, Schethar-Boznaï, et leurs collègues, vinrent auprès d’eux et leur parlèrent ainsi : Qui vous a donné l’autorisation de bâtir cette maison et de relever ces murs ? 4Ils leur dirent encore : Quels sont les noms des hommes qui construisent cet édifice ? 5Mais l’œil de Dieu veillait sur les anciens des Juifs. Et on laissa continuer les travaux pendant l’envoi d’un rapport à Darius et jusqu’à la réception d’une lettre sur cet objet. 6Copie de la lettre envoyée au roi Darius par Thathnaï, gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve. Schethar-Boznaï, et leurs collègues d’Apharsac, demeurant de ce côté du fleuve. 7Ils lui adressèrent un rapport ainsi conçu : Au roi Darius, salut ! 8Que le roi sache que nous sommes allés dans la province de Juda, à la maison du grand Dieu. Elle se construit en pierres de taille, et le bois se pose dans les murs ; le travail marche rapidement et réussit entre leurs mains. 9Nous avons interrogé les anciens, et nous leur avons ainsi parlé : Qui vous a donné l’autorisation de bâtir cette maison et de relever ces murs ? 10Nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms pour te les faire connaître, et nous avons mis par écrit les noms des hommes qui sont à leur tête. 11Voici la réponse qu’ils nous ont faite : Nous sommes les serviteurs du Dieu des cieux et de la terre, et nous rebâtissons la maison qui avait été construite il y a bien des années ; un grand roi d’Israël l’avait bâtie et achevée. 12Mais après que nos pères eurent irrité le Dieu des cieux, il les livra entre les mains de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, le Chaldéen, qui détruisit cette maison et emmena le peuple captif à Babylone. 13Toutefois, la première année de Cyrus, roi de Babylone, le roi Cyrus donna l’ordre de rebâtir cette maison de Dieu. 14Et même le roi Cyrus ôta du temple de Babylone les ustensiles d’or et d’argent de la maison de Dieu, que Nebucadnetsar avait enlevés du temple de Jérusalem et transportés dans le temple de Babylone, il les fit remettre au nommé Scheschbatsar, qu’il établit gouverneur, 15et il lui dit : Prends ces ustensiles, va les déposer dans le temple de Jérusalem, et que la maison de Dieu soit rebâtie sur le lieu où elle était. 16Ce Scheschbatsar est donc venu, et il a posé les fondements de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem ; depuis lors jusqu’à présent elle se construit, et elle n’est pas achevée. 17Maintenant, si le roi le trouve bon, que l’on fasse des recherches dans la maison des trésors du roi à Babylone, pour voir s’il y a eu de la part du roi Cyrus un ordre donné pour la construction de cette maison de Dieu à Jérusalem. Puis, que le roi nous transmette sa volonté sur cet objet.
1Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel they prophesied to them. 2Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them. 3At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and their companions, and said thus to them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?” 4Then we told them in this way, what the names of the men were who were making this building. 5But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, until the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it. 6The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king; 7they sent a letter to him, in which was written thus: To Darius the king, all peace. 8Be it known to the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands. 9Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?” 10We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head. 11Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished. 12But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 13But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God. 14The gold and silver vessels also of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15and he said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’ 16Then the same Sheshbazzar came, and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now has it been in building, and yet it is not completed. 17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”
1Haggai nu, de profeet, en Zacharia, de zoon van Iddo, profeteerden tot de Joden, die in Juda en te Jeruzalem waren; in den naam Gods van Israel profeteerden zij tot hen. 2Toen maakten zich op Zerubbabel, de zoon van Sealthiel, en Jesua, de zoon van Jozadak, en begonnen te bouwen het huis Gods, Die te Jeruzalem woont; en met hen de profeten Gods, die hen ondersteunden. 3Te dier tijd kwam tot hen Thathnai, de landvoogd aan deze zijde der rivier, en Sthar-Boznai, en hun gezelschap, en zeiden aldus tot hen: Wie heeft ulieden bevel gegeven dit huis te bouwen, en dezen muur te voltrekken? 4Toen zeiden wij aldus tot hen, en welke de namen waren der mannen, die dit gebouw bouwden. 5Doch het oog huns Gods was over de oudsten der Joden, dat zij hun niet beletten, totdat de zaak aan Darius kwam, en zij alsdan daarover een brief wederbrachten. 6Afschrift des briefs, dien Thathnai, de landvoogd aan deze zijde der rivier, met Sthar-Boznai, en zijn gezelschap, de Afarsechaieten, die aan deze zijde der rivier waren, aan den koning Darius zond. 7Zij zonden een verhaal aan hem; en daarin was aldus geschreven: Den koning Darius zij alle vrede. 8Den koning zij bekend, dat wij getogen zijn naar het landschap Juda, ten huize des groten Gods, hetwelk gebouwd wordt met grote stenen, en het hout wordt gelegd in de wanden; en datzelve werk wordt ras gedaan, en gaat voorspoediglijk door hun handen voort. 9Toen hebben wij denzelven oudsten gevraagd, en aldus tot hen gezegd: Wie heeft ulieden bevel gegeven dit huis te bouwen, en dezen muur te voltrekken? 10Wijders hebben wij hun ook hun namen afgevraagd, dat wij ze u bekend maakten; dat wij mochten overschrijven de namen der mannen, die hoofden onder hen zijn. 11En zij hebben ons dusdanig antwoord wedergegeven, zeggende: Wij zijn knechten van den God des hemels en der aarde, en bouwen het huis, dat vele jaren voor dezen is gebouwd geweest; want een groot koning van Israel had het gebouwd en voltrokken. 12Maar nadat onze vaders den God des hemels hadden vertoornd, heeft Hij hen gegeven in de hand van Nebukadnezar, den koning van Babel, den Chaldeeer; dewelke dat huis heeft vernield, en het volk naar Babel weggevoerd. 13Doch in het eerste jaar van Kores, koning van Babel, heeft de koning Kores bevel gegeven dit huis Gods te bouwen. 14Ja, de vaten van Gods huis, welke van goud en zilver waren, die Nebukadnezar uit den tempel, die te Jeruzalem was, had weggenomen en dezelve gebracht in den tempel van Babel, die heeft de koning Kores uitgehaald uit den tempel van Babel, en zij zijn gegeven aan een, wiens naam was Sesbazar, dien hij tot een landvoogd had gesteld. 15En hij zeide tot hem: Neem deze vaten, ga ze afvoeren in den tempel, die te Jeruzalem is, en laat het huis Gods gebouwd worden op zijn plaats. 16Toen kwam dezelve Sesbazar; hij legde de fondamenten van het huis Gods, Die te Jeruzalem woont; en er is van toen af tot nu toe gebouwd, doch niet volbracht. 17Zo het dan nu den koning goeddunkt, laat er gezocht worden in het schathuis des konings aldaar, dat te Babel is, of het zij, dat een bevel van den koning Kores gegeven zij, om dit huis Gods te Jeruzalem te bouwen; en dat men des konings believen hiervan tot ons zende.
