1Cette parole est certaine : Si quelqu’un aspire à la charge d’évêque, il désire une œuvre excellente. 2Il faut donc que l’évêque soit irréprochable, mari d’une seule femme, sobre, modéré, réglé dans sa conduite, hospitalier, propre à l’enseignement. 3Il faut qu’il ne soit ni adonné au vin, ni violent, mais indulgent, pacifique, désintéressé. 4Il faut qu’il dirige bien sa propre maison, et qu’il tienne ses enfants dans la soumission et dans une parfaite honnêteté ; 5car si quelqu’un ne sait pas diriger sa propre maison, comment prendra-t-il soin de l’Église de Dieu ? 6Il ne faut pas qu’il soit un nouveau converti, de peur qu’enflé d’orgueil il ne tombe sous le jugement du diable. 7Il faut aussi qu’il reçoive un bon témoignage de ceux du dehors, afin de ne pas tomber dans l’opprobre et dans les pièges du diable. 8Les diacres aussi doivent être honnêtes, éloignés de la duplicité, des excès du vin, d’un gain sordide, 9conservant le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure. 10Qu’on les éprouve d’abord, et qu’ils exercent ensuite leur ministère, s’ils sont sans reproche. 11Les femmes, de même, doivent être honnêtes, non médisantes, sobres, fidèles en toutes choses. 12Les diacres doivent être maris d’une seule femme, et diriger bien leurs enfants et leurs propres maisons ; 13car ceux qui remplissent convenablement leur ministère s’acquièrent un rang honorable, et une grande assurance dans la foi en Jésus-Christ. 14Je t’écris ces choses, avec l’espérance d’aller bientôt vers toi, 15mais afin que tu saches, si je tarde, comment il faut se conduire dans la maison de Dieu, qui est l’Église du Dieu vivant, la colonne et l’appui de la vérité. 16Et, sans contredit, le mystère de la piété est grand : celui qui a été manifesté en chair, justifié par l’Esprit, vu des anges, prêché aux Gentils, cru dans le monde, élevé dans la gloire.
1This is a faithful saying: if a man seeks the office of an overseer, he desires a good work. 2The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; 3not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence; 5(but if a man doesn’t know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the assembly of God?) 6not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8Servants, in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money; 9holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10Let them also first be tested; then let them serve if they are blameless. 11Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 14These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly; 15but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in God’s house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great: God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, and received up in glory.
1Dit is een getrouw woord: zo iemand tot eens opzieners ambt lust heeft, die begeert een treffelijk werk. 2Een opziener dan moet onberispelijk zijn, ener vrouwe man, wakker, matig, eerbaar, gaarne herbergende, bekwaam om te leren; 3Niet genegen tot den wijn, geen smijter, geen vuil-gewinzoeker; maar bescheiden, geen vechter, niet geldgierig. 4Die zijn eigen huis wel regeert, zijn kinderen in onderdanigheid houdende, met alle stemmigheid; 5(Want zo iemand zijn eigen huis niet weet te regeren, hoe zal hij voor de Gemeente Gods zorg dragen?) 6Geen nieuweling, opdat hij niet opgeblazen worde, en in het oordeel des duivels valle. 7En hij moet ook een goede getuigenis hebben van degenen, die buiten zijn, opdat hij niet valle in smaadheid, en in den strik des duivels. 8De diakenen insgelijks moeten eerbaar zijn, niet tweetongig, niet die zich tot veel wijns begeven, geen vuil-gewinzoekers; 9Houdende de verborgenheid des geloofs in een rein geweten. 10En dat deze ook eerst beproefd worden, en dat zij daarna dienen, zo zij onbestraffelijk zijn. 11De vrouwen insgelijks moeten eerbaar zijn, geen lasteraarsters, wakker, getrouw in alles. 12Dat de diakenen ener vrouwe mannen zijn, die hun kinderen en hun eigen huizen wel regeren. 13Want die wel gediend hebben, verkrijgen zichzelven een goeden opgang, en vele vrijmoedigheid in het geloof, hetwelk is in Christus Jezus. 14Deze dingen schrijf ik u, hopende zeer haast tot u te komen; 15Maar zo ik vertoef, opdat gij moogt weten, hoe men in het huis Gods moet verkeren, hetwelk is de Gemeente des levenden Gods, een pilaar en vastigheid der waarheid. 16En buiten allen twijfel, de verborgenheid der godzaligheid is groot: God is geopenbaard in het vlees, is gerechtvaardigd in den Geest, is gezien van de engelen, is gepredikt onder de heidenen, is geloofd in de wereld, is opgenomen in heerlijkheid.
