1J’exhorte donc, avant toutes choses, à faire des prières, des supplications, des requêtes, des actions de grâces, pour tous les hommes, 2pour les rois et pour tous ceux qui sont élevés en dignité, afin que nous menions une vie paisible et tranquille, en toute piété et honnêteté. 3Cela est bon et agréable devant Dieu notre Sauveur, 4qui veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés et parviennent à la connaissance de la vérité. 5Car il y a un seul Dieu, et aussi un seul médiateur entre Dieu et les hommes, Jésus-Christ homme, 6qui s’est donné lui-même en rançon pour tous. C’est là le témoignage rendu en son propre temps, 7et pour lequel j’ai été établi prédicateur et apôtre, -je dis la vérité, je ne mens pas , -chargé d’instruire les païens dans la foi et la vérité. 8Je veux donc que les hommes prient en tout lieu, en élevant des mains pures, sans colère ni mauvaises pensées. 9Je veux aussi que les femmes, vêtues d’une manière décente, avec pudeur et modestie, ne se parent ni de tresses, ni d’or, ni de perles, ni d’habits somptueux, 10mais qu’elles se parent de bonnes œuvres, comme il convient à des femmes qui font profession de servir Dieu. 11Que la femme écoute l’instruction en silence, avec une entière soumission. 12Je ne permets pas à la femme d’enseigner, ni de prendre de l’autorité sur l’homme ; mais elle doit demeurer dans le silence. 13Car Adam a été formé le premier, Ève ensuite ; 14et ce n’est pas Adam qui a été séduit, c’est la femme qui, séduite, s’est rendue coupable de transgression. 15Elle sera néanmoins sauvée en devenant mère, si elle persévère avec modestie dans la foi, dans la charité, et dans la sainteté.
1I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; 4who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all; the testimony in its own times; 7to which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth in Christ, not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 8I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting. 9In the same way, that women also adorn themselves in decent clothing, with modesty and propriety; not just with braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing; 10but (which becomes women professing godliness) with good works. 11Let a woman learn in quietness with all subjection. 12But I don’t permit a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness. 13For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14Adam wasn’t deceived, but the woman, being deceived, has fallen into disobedience; 15but she will be saved through her childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and sanctification with sobriety.
1Ik vermaan dan voor alle dingen, dat gedaan worden smekingen, gebeden, voorbiddingen, dankzeggingen, voor alle mensen; 2Voor koningen, en allen, die in hoogheid zijn; opdat wij een gerust en stil leven leiden mogen in alle godzaligheid en eerbaarheid. 3Want dat is goed en aangenaam voor God, onzen Zaligmaker; 4Welke wil, dat alle mensen zalig worden, en tot kennis der waarheid komen. 5Want er is een God, er is ook een Middelaar Gods en der mensen, de Mens Christus Jezus; 6Die Zichzelven gegeven heeft tot een rantsoen voor allen, zijnde de getuigenis te zijner tijd; 7Waartoe ik gesteld ben een prediker en apostel (ik zeg de waarheid in Christus, ik lieg niet), een leraar der heidenen, in geloof en waarheid. 8Ik wil dan, dat de mannen bidden in alle plaatsen, opheffende heilige handen, zonder toorn en twisting. 9Desgelijks ook, dat de vrouwen, in een eerbaar gewaad, met schaamte en matigheid zichzelven versieren, niet in vlechtingen des haars, of goud, of paarlen, of kostelijke kleding; 10Maar (hetwelk de vrouwen betaamt, die de godvruchtigheid belijden) door goede werken. 11Een vrouw late zich leren in stilheid, in alle onderdanigheid. 12Doch ik laat de vrouw niet toe, dat zij lere, noch over den man heerse, maar wil, dat zij in stilheid zij. 13Want Adam is eerst gemaakt, daarna Eva. 14En Adam is niet verleid geworden; maar de vrouw, verleid zijnde, is in overtreding geweest. 15Doch zij zal zalig worden in kinderen te baren, zo zij blijft in het geloof, en liefde, en heiligmaking, met matigheid.
