1ESTABA entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Bethania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana. 2(Y María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, era la que ungió al Señor con ungüento, y limpió sus pies con sus cabellos.) 3Enviaron, pues, sus hermanas á él, diciendo: Señor, he aquí, el que amas está enfermo. 4Y oyéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, mas por gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella. 5Y amaba Jesús á Marta, y á su hermana, y á Lázaro. 6Como oyó pues que estaba enfermo, quedóse aún dos días en aquel lugar donde estaba. 7Luego, después de esto, dijo á los discípulos: Vamos á Judea otra vez. 8Dícenle los discípulos: Rabbí, ahora procuraban los Judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá? 9Respondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anduviere de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo. 10Mas el que anduviere de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él. 11Dicho esto, díceles después: Lázaro nuestro amigo duerme; mas voy á despertarle del sueño. 12Dijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, salvo estará. 13Mas esto decía Jesús de la muerte de él: y ellos pensaron que hablaba del reposar del sueño. 14Entonces, pues, Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro es muerto; 15Y huélgome por vosotros, que yo no haya estado allí, para que creáis: mas vamos á él. 16Dijo entonces Tomás, el que se dice el Dídimo, á sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él. 17Vino pues Jesús, y halló que había ya cuatro días que estaba en el sepulcro. 18Y Bethania estaba cerca de Jerusalem, como quince estadios; 19Y muchos de los Judíos habían venido á Marta y á María, á consolarlas de su hermano. 20Entonces Marta, como oyó que Jesús venía, salió á encontrarle; mas María se estuvo en casa. 21Y Marta dijo á Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no fuera muerto; 22Mas también sé ahora, que todo lo que pidieres de Dios, te dará Dios. 23Dícele Jesús: Resucitará tu hermano. 24Marta le dice: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección en el día postrero. 25Dícele Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida: el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá. 26Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto? 27Dícele: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo. 28Y esto dicho, fuése, y llamó en secreto á María su hermana, diciendo: El Maestro está aquí y te llama. 29Ella, como lo oyó, levántase prestamente y viene á él. 30(Que aun no había llegado Jesús á la aldea, mas estaba en aquel lugar donde Marta le había encontrado.) 31Entonces los Judíos que estaban en casa con ella, y la consolaban, como vieron que María se había levantado prestamente, y había salido, siguiéronla, diciendo: Va al sepulcro á llorar allí. 32Mas María, como vino donde estaba Jesús, viéndole, derribóse á sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no fuera muerto mi hermano. 33Jesús entonces, como la vió llorando, y á los Judíos que habían venido juntamente con ella llorando, se conmovió en espíritu, y turbóse, 34Y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Dícenle: Señor, ven, y ve. 35Y lloró Jesús. 36Dijeron entonces los Judíos: Mirad cómo le amaba. 37Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste que abrió los ojos al ciego, hacer que éste no muriera? 38Y Jesús, conmoviéndose otra vez en sí mismo, vino al sepulcro. Era una cueva, la cual tenía una piedra encima. 39Dice Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que se había muerto, le dice: Señor, hiede ya, que es de cuatro días. 40Jesús le dice: ¿No te he dicho que, si creyeres, verás la gloria de Dios? 41Entonces quitaron la piedra de donde el muerto había sido puesto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos arriba, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy que me has oído. 42Que yo sabía que siempre me oyes; mas por causa de la compañía que está alrededor, lo dije, para que crean que tú me has enviado. 43Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó á gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera. 44Y el que había estado muerto, salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas; y su rostro estaba envuelto en un sudario. Díceles Jesús: Desatadle, y dejadle ir. 45Entonces muchos de los Judíos que habían venido á María, y habían visto lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él. 46Mas algunos de ellos fueron á los Fariseos, y dijéronles lo que Jesús había hecho. 47Entonces los pontífices y los Fariseos juntaron concilio, y decían: ¿Qué hacemos? porque este hombre hace muchas señales. 48Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él: y vendrán los Romanos, y quitarán nuestro lugar y la nación. 49Y Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo pontífice de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada; 50Ni pensáis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación se pierda. 51Mas esto no lo dijo de sí mismo; sino que, como era el sumo pontífice de aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación: 52Y no solamente por aquella nación, mas también para que juntase en uno los hijos de Dios que estaban derramados. 53Así que, desde aquel día consultaban juntos de matarle. 54Por tanto, Jesús ya no andaba manifiestamente entre los Judíos; mas fuése de allí á la tierra que está junto al desierto, á una ciudad que se llama Ephraim: y estábase allí con sus discípulos. 55Y la Pascua de los Judíos estaba cerca: y muchos subieron de aquella tierra á Jerusalem antes de la Pascua, para purificarse; 56Y buscaban á Jesús, y hablaban los unos con los otros estando en el templo: ¿Qué os parece, que no vendrá á la fiesta? 57Y los pontífices y los Fariseos habían dado mandamiento, que si alguno supiese dónde estuviera, lo manifestase, para que le prendiesen.
1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. 2It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.” 4But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.” 5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was. 7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.” 8The disciples told him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.” 11He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.” 12The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. 14So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead. 15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.” 16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.” 17So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away. 19Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. 20Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. 21Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” 23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.” 28When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.” 29When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. 31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.” 32Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” 33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35Jesus wept. 36The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!” 37Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?” 38Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?” 41So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me. 42I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.” 45Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him. 46But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done. 47The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs. 48If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. 54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples. 55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?” 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
1En er was een zeker man krank, genaamd Lazarus, van Bethanie, uit het vlek van Maria en haar zuster Martha. 2(Maria nu was degene, die den Heere gezalfd heeft met zalf, en Zijn voeten afgedroogd heeft met haar haren; welker broeder Lazarus krank was.) 3Zijn zusters dan zonden tot Hem, zeggende: Heere, zie, dien Gij liefhebt, is krank. 4En Jezus, dat horende, zeide: Deze krankheid is niet tot den dood, maar ter heerlijkheid Gods; opdat de Zone Gods door dezelve verheerlijkt worde. 5Jezus nu had Martha, en haar zuster, en Lazarus lief. 6Als Hij dan gehoord had, dat hij krank was, toen bleef Hij nog twee dagen in de plaats, waar Hij was. 7Daarna zeide Hij verder tot de discipelen: Laat ons wederom naar Judea gaan. 8De discipelen zeiden tot Hem: Rabbi! de Joden hebben U nu onlangs gezocht te stenigen, en gaat Gij wederom derwaarts? 9Jezus antwoordde: Zijn er niet twaalf uren in den dag? Indien iemand in den dag wandelt, zo stoot hij zich niet, overmits hij het licht dezer wereld ziet; 10Maar indien iemand in den nacht wandelt, zo stoot hij zich, overmits het licht in hem niet is. 11Dit sprak Hij; en daarna zeide Hij tot hen: Lazarus, onze vriend, slaapt; maar Ik ga heen, om hem uit den slaap op te wekken. 12Zijn discipelen dan zeiden: Heere, indien hij slaapt, zo zal hij gezond worden. 13Doch Jezus had gesproken van zijn dood; maar zij meenden, dat Hij sprak van de rust des slaaps. 14Toen zeide dan Jezus tot hen vrijuit: Lazarus is gestorven. 15En Ik ben blijde om uwentwil, dat Ik daar niet geweest ben, opdat gij geloven moogt; doch laat ons tot hem gaan. 16Thomas dan, genaamd Didymus, zeide tot zijn medediscipelen: Laat ons ook gaan, opdat wij met Hem sterven. 17Jezus dan, gekomen zijnde, vond, dat hij nu vier dagen in het graf geweest was. 18(Bethanie nu was nabij Jeruzalem, omtrent vijftien stadien van daar.) 19En velen uit de Joden waren gekomen tot Martha en Maria, opdat zij haar vertroosten zouden over haar broeder. 20Martha dan, als zij hoorde, dat Jezus kwam, ging Hem tegemoet; doch Maria bleef in huis zitten. 21Zo zeide Martha dan tot Jezus: Heere, waart Gij hier geweest, zo ware mijn broeder niet gestorven; 22Maar ook nu weet ik, dat alles, wat Gij van God begeren zult, God U het geven zal. 23Jezus zeide tot haar: Uw broeder zal wederopstaan. 24Martha zeide tot Hem: Ik weet, dat hij opstaan zal in de opstanding ten laatsten dage. 25Jezus zeide tot haar: Ik ben de Opstanding en het Leven; die in Mij gelooft zal leven, al ware hij ook gestorven; 26En een iegelijk, die leeft, en in Mij gelooft, zal niet sterven in der eeuwigheid. Gelooft gij dat? 27Zij zeide tot Hem: Ja, Heere; ik heb geloofd, dat Gij zijt de Christus, de Zone Gods, Die in de wereld komen zou. 28En dit gezegd hebbende, ging zij heen, en riep Maria, haar zuster, heimelijk, zeggende: De Meester is daar, en Hij roept u. 29Deze, als zij dat hoorde, stond haastelijk op, en ging tot Hem. 30(Jezus nu was nog in het vlek niet gekomen, maar was in de plaats, waar Hem Martha tegemoet gekomen was.) 31De Joden dan, die met haar in het huis waren, en haar vertroostten, ziende Maria, dat zij haastelijk opstond en uitging, volgden haar, zeggende: Zij gaat naar het graf, opdat zij aldaar wene. 32Maria dan, als zij kwam, waar Jezus was, en Hem zag, viel aan Zijn voeten, zeggende tot Hem: Heere, indien Gij hier geweest waart, zo ware mijn broeder niet gestorven. 33Jezus dan, als Hij haar zag wenen, en de Joden, die met haar kwamen, ook wenen, werd zeer bewogen in den geest, en ontroerde Zichzelven; 34En zeide: Waar hebt gij hem gelegd? Zij zeiden tot Hem: Heere, kom en zie het. 35Jezus weende. 36De Joden dan zeiden: Ziet, hoe lief Hij hem had! 37En sommigen uit hen zeiden: Kon Hij, Die de ogen des blinden geopend heeft, niet maken, dat ook deze niet gestorven ware? 38Jezus dan wederom in Zichzelven zeer bewogen zijnde, kwam tot het graf; en het was een spelonk, en een steen was daarop gelegd. 39Jezus zeide: Neemt den steen weg. Martha, de zuster des gestorvenen, zeide tot Hem: Heere, hij riekt nu al, want hij heeft vier dagen aldaar gelegen. 40Jezus zeide tot haar: Heb Ik u niet gezegd, dat, zo gij gelooft, gij de heerlijkheid Gods zien zult? 41Zij namen dan den steen weg, waar de gestorvene lag. En Jezus hief de ogen opwaarts, en zeide: Vader, Ik dank U, dat Gij Mij gehoord hebt. 42Doch Ik wist, dat Gij Mij altijd hoort; maar om der schare wil, die rondom staat, heb Ik dit gezegd, opdat zij zouden geloven, dat Gij Mij gezonden hebt. 43En als Hij dit gezegd had, riep Hij met grote stemme: Lazarus, kom uit! 44En de gestorvene kwam uit, gebonden aan handen en voeten met grafdoeken, en zijn aangezicht was omwonden met een zweetdoek. Jezus zeide tot hen: Ontbindt hem, en laat hem heengaan. 45Velen dan uit de Joden, die tot Maria gekomen waren, en aanschouwd hadden, hetgeen Jezus gedaan had, geloofden in Hem. 46Maar sommigen van hen gingen tot de Farizeen, en zeiden tot hen, hetgeen Jezus gedaan had. 47De overpriesters dan en de Farizeen vergaderden den raad, en zeiden: Wat zullen wij doen? want deze Mens doet vele tekenen. 48Indien wij Hem alzo laten geworden, zij zullen allen in Hem geloven, en de Romeinen zullen komen, en wegnemen beide onze plaats en volk. 49En een uit hen, namelijk Kajafas, die deszelven jaars hogepriester was, zeide tot hen: Gij verstaat niets; 50En gij overlegt niet, dat het ons nut is, dat een mens sterve voor het volk, en het gehele volk niet verloren ga. 51En dit zeide hij niet uit zichzelven; maar, zijnde hogepriester deszelven jaars, profeteerde hij, dat Jezus sterven zou voor het volk; 52En niet alleen voor dat volk, maar opdat Hij ook de kinderen Gods, die verstrooid waren, tot een zou vergaderen. 53Van dien dag dan af beraadslaagden zij te zamen, dat zij Hem doden zouden. 54Jezus dan wandelde niet meer vrijelijk onder de Joden; maar ging van daar naar het land bij de woestijn, naar de stad, genaamd Efraim, en verkeerde aldaar met Zijn discipelen. 55En het pascha der Joden was nabij, en velen uit dat land gingen op naar Jeruzalem, voor het pascha, opdat zij zichzelven reinigden. 56Zij zochten dan Jezus, en zeiden onder elkander, staande in den tempel: Wat dunkt u? Dunkt u, dat Hij niet komen zal tot het feest? 57De overpriesters nu en de Farizeen hadden een gebod gegeven, dat, zo iemand wist, waar Hij was, hij het zou te kennen geven, opdat zij Hem mochten vangen.
