1Y DIERON aviso á Joab: He aquí el rey llora, y hace duelo por Absalom. 2Y volvióse aquel día la victoria en luto para todo el pueblo; porque oyó decir el pueblo aquel día que el rey tenía dolor por su hijo. 3Entróse el pueblo aquel día en la ciudad escondidamente, como suele entrar á escondidas el pueblo avergonzado que ha huído de la batalla. 4Mas el rey, cubierto el rostro, clamaba en alta voz: ¡Hijo mío Absalom, Absalom, hijo mío, hijo mío! 5Y entrando Joab en casa al rey, díjole: Hoy has avergonzado el rostro de todos tus siervos, que han hoy librado tu vida, y la vida de tus hijos y de tus hijas, y la vida de tus mujeres, y la vida de tus concubinas, 6Amando á los que te aborrecen, y aborreciendo á los que te aman: porque hoy has declarado que nada te importan tus príncipes y siervos; pues hoy echo de ver que si Absalom viviera, bien que nosotros todos estuviéramos hoy muertos, entonces te contentaras. 7Levántate pues ahora, y sal fuera, y halaga á tus siervos: porque juro por Jehová, que si no sales, ni aun uno quede contigo esta noche; y de esto te pesará más que de todos los males que te han sobrevenido desde tu mocedad hasta ahora. 8Entonces se levantó el rey, y sentóse á la puerta; y fué declarado á todo el pueblo, diciendo: He aquí el rey está sentado á la puerta. Y vino todo el pueblo delante del rey; mas Israel había huído, cada uno á sus estancias. 9Y todo el pueblo porfiaba en todas las tribus de Israel, diciendo: El rey nos ha librado de mano de nuestros enemigos, y él nos ha salvado de mano de los Filisteos; y ahora había huído de la tierra por miedo de Absalom. 10Y Absalom, á quien habíamos ungido sobre nosotros, es muerto en la batalla. ¿Por qué pues os estáis ahora quedos en orden á hacer volver al rey? 11Y el rey David envió á Sadoc y á Abiathar sacerdotes, diciendo: Hablad á los ancianos de Judá y decidles: ¿Por qué seréis vosotros los postreros en volver el rey á su casa, ya que la palabra de todo Israel ha venido al rey de volverle á su casa? 12Vosotros sois mis hermanos; mis huesos y mi carne sois: ¿por qué pues seréis vosotros los postreros en volver al rey? 13Asimismo diréis á Amasa: ¿No eres tú también hueso mío y carne mía? Así me haga Dios, y así me añada, si no fueres general del ejército delante de mí para siempre, en lugar de Joab. 14Así inclinó el corazón de todos los varones de Judá, como el de un solo hombre, para que enviasen á decir al rey: Vuelve tú, y todos tus siervos. 15Volvió pues el rey, y vino hasta el Jordán. Y Judá vino á Gilgal, á recibir al rey y pasarlo el Jordán. 16Y Semei hijo de Gera, hijo de Benjamín, que era de Bahurim, dióse priesa á venir con los hombres de Judá á recibir al rey David; 17Y con él venían mil hombres de Benjamín; asimismo Siba criado de la casa de Saúl, con sus quince hijos y sus veinte siervos, los cuales pasaron el Jordán delante del rey. 18Atravesó después la barca para pasar la familia del rey, y para hacer lo que le pluguiera. Entonces Semei hijo de Gera se postró delante del rey cuando él había pasado el Jordán. 19Y dijo al rey: No me impute mi señor iniquidad, ni tengas memoria de los males que tu siervo hizo el día que mi señor el rey salió de Jerusalem, para guardarlos el rey en su corazón; 20Porque yo tu siervo conozco haber pecado, y he venido hoy el primero de toda la casa de José, para descender á recibir á mi señor el rey. 21Y Abisai hijo de Sarvia respondió y dijo: ¿No ha de morir por esto Semei, que maldijo al ungido de Jehová? 22David entonces dijo: ¿Qué tenéis vosotros conmigo, hijos de Sarvia, que me habéis de ser hoy adversarios? ¿ha de morir hoy alguno en Israel? ¿no conozco yo que hoy soy rey sobre Israel? 23Y dijo el rey á Semei: No morirás. Y el rey se lo juró. 24También Mephi-boseth hijo de Saúl descendió á recibir al rey: no había lavado sus pies, ni había cortado su barba, ni tampoco había lavado sus vestidos, desde el día que el rey salió hasta el día que vino en paz. 25Y luego que vino él á Jerusalem á recibir al rey, el rey le dijo: Mephi-boseth, ¿por qué no fuiste conmigo? 26Y él dijo: Rey señor mío, mi siervo me ha engañado; pues había tu siervo dicho: Enalbardaré un asno, y subiré en él, é iré al rey; porque tu siervo es cojo. 27Empero él revolvió á tu siervo delante de mi señor el rey; mas mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios: haz pues lo que bien te pareciere. 28Porque toda la casa de mi padre era digna de muerte delante de mi señor el rey, y tú pusiste á tu siervo entre los convidados de tu mesa. ¿Qué derecho pues tengo aún para quejarme más contra el rey? 29Y el rey le dijo: ¿Para qué hablas más palabras? Yo he determinado que tú y Siba partáis las tierras. 30Y Mephi-boseth dijo al rey: Y aun tómelas él todas, pues que mi señor el rey ha vuelto en paz á su casa. 31También Barzillai Galaadita descendió de Rogelim, y pasó el Jordán con el rey, para acompañarle de la otra parte del Jordán. 32Y era Barzillai muy viejo, de ochenta años, el cual había dado provisión al rey cuando estaba en Mahanaim, porque era hombre muy rico. 33Y el rey dijo á Barzillai: Pasa conmigo, y yo te daré de comer conmigo en Jerusalem. 34Mas Barzillai dijo al rey: ¿Cuántos son los días del tiempo de mi vida, para que yo suba con el rey á Jerusalem? 35Yo soy hoy día de edad de ochenta años, que ya no haré diferencia entre lo bueno y lo malo: ¿tomará gusto ahora tu siervo en lo que comiere ó bebiere? ¿oiré más la voz de los cantores y de las cantoras? ¿para qué, pues, sería aún tu siervo molesto á mi señor el rey? 36Pasará tu siervo un poco el Jordán con el rey: ¿por qué me ha de dar el rey tan grande recompensa? 37Yo te ruego que dejes volver á tu siervo, y que muera en mi ciudad, junto al sepulcro de mi padre y de mi madre. He aquí tu siervo Chimham; que pase él con mi señor el rey, y hazle lo que bien te pareciere. 38Y el rey dijo: Pues pase conmigo Chimham, y yo haré con él como bien te parezca: y todo lo que tú pidieres de mí, yo lo haré. 39Y todo el pueblo pasó el Jordán: y luego que el rey hubo también pasado, el rey besó á Barzillai, y bendíjolo; y él se volvió á su casa. 40El rey entonces pasó á Gilgal, y con él pasó Chimham; y todo el pueblo de Judá, con la mitad del pueblo de Israel, pasaron al rey. 41Y he aquí todos los varones de Israel vinieron al rey, y le dijeron: ¿Por qué los hombres de Judá, nuestros hermanos, te han llevado, y han hecho pasar el Jordán al rey y á su familia, y á todos los varones de David con él? 42Y todos los varones de Judá respondieron á todos los de Israel: Porque el rey es nuestro pariente. Mas ¿por qué os enojáis vosotros de eso? ¿hemos nosotros comido algo del rey? ¿hemos recibido de él algún don? 43Entonces respondieron los varones de Israel, y dijeron á los de Judá: Nosotros tenemos en el rey diez partes, y en el mismo David más que vosotros: ¿por qué pues nos habéis tenido en poco? ¿no hablamos nosotros primero en volver á nuestro rey? Y el razonamiento de los varones de Judá fué más fuerte que el de los varones de Israel.
1It was told Joab, “Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.” 2The victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people; for the people heard it said that day, “The king grieves for his son.” 3The people sneaked into the city that day, as people who are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle. 4The king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, “My son Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son!” 5Joab came into the house to the king, and said, “You have shamed this day the faces of all your servants, who this day have saved your life, and the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines; 6in that you love those who hate you, and hate those who love you. For you have declared this day, that princes and servants are nothing to you. For today I perceive that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it would have pleased you well. 7Now therefore arise, go out, and speak to comfort your servants; for I swear by Yahweh, if you don’t go out, not a man will stay with you this night. That would be worse to you than all the evil that has happened to you from your youth until now.” 8Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. They told to all the people, saying, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” All the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his tent. 9All the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he has fled out of the land from Absalom. 10Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why don’t you speak a word of bringing the king back?” 11King David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, “Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, ‘Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house? Since the speech of all Israel has come to the king, to return him to his house. 12You are my brothers, you are my bone and my flesh. Why then are you the last to bring back the king?’ 13Say to Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my bone and my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if you aren’t captain of the army before me continually in the room of Joab.’” 14He bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as one man; so that they sent to the king, saying, “Return, you and all your servants.” 15So the king returned, and came to the Jordan. Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan. 16Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, who was of Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David. 17There were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went through the Jordan in the presence of the king. 18A ferry boat went to bring over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he had come over the Jordan. 19He said to the king, “Don’t let my lord impute iniquity to me, nor remember that which your servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart. 20For your servant knows that I have sinned. Therefore behold, I have come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.” 21But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered, “Shall Shimei not be put to death for this, because he cursed Yahweh’s anointed?” 22David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be adversaries to me? Shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? For don’t I know that I am this day king over Israel?” 23The king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” The king swore to him. 24Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither groomed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace. 25When he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said to him, “Why didn’t you go with me, Mephibosheth?” 26He answered, “My lord, O king, my servant deceived me. For your servant said, I will saddle me a donkey, that I may ride on it, and go with the king; because your servant is lame. 27He has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God. Do therefore what is good in your eyes. 28For all my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more to the king?” 29The king said to him, “Why do you speak any more of your matters? I say, you and Ziba divide the land.” 30Mephibosheth said to the king, “Yes, let him take all, because my lord the king has come in peace to his own house.” 31Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over the Jordan with the king, to conduct him over the Jordan. 32Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man. 33The king said to Barzillai, “Come over with me, and I will sustain you with me in Jerusalem.” 34Barzillai said to the king, “How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? 35I am this day eighty years old. Can I discern between good and bad? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be yet a burden to my lord the king? 36Your servant would but just go over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward? 37Please let your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to you.” 38The king answered, “Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to you. Whatever you require of me, that I will do for you.” 39All the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over. Then the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place. 40So the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimham went over with him. All the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel. 41Behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, “Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king, and his household, over the Jordan, and all David’s men with him?” 42All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is a close relative to us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s cost? Or has he given us any gift?” 43The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, “We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more claim to David than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?” The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
1En Joab werd aangezegd: Zie, de koning weent, en bedrijft rouw over Absalom. 2Toen werd de verlossing te dienzelven dage het ganse volk tot rouw; want het volk had te dienzelven dage horen zeggen: Het smart den koning over zijn zoon. 3En het volk kwam te dienzelven dage steelsgewijze in de stad, gelijk als het volk zich wegsteelt, dat beschaamd is, wanneer zij in den strijd gevloden zijn. 4De koning nu had zijn aangezicht toegewonden, en de koning riep met luider stem: Mijn zoon Absalom, Absalom, mijn zoon, mijn zoon! 5Toen kwam Joab tot den koning in het huis, en zeide: Gij hebt heden beschaamd het aangezicht van al uw knechten, die uw ziel, en de ziel uwer zonen en uwer dochteren, en de ziel uwer vrouwen, en de ziel uwer bijwijven heden hebben bevrijd; 6Liefhebbende die u haten, en hatende die u liefhebben; want gij geeft heden te kennen, dat oversten en knechten bij u niets zijn; want ik merk heden, dat zo Absalom leefde, en wij heden allen dood waren, dat het alsdan recht zou zijn in uw ogen. 7Zo sta nu op, ga uit, en spreek naar het hart uwer knechten; want ik zweer bij den HEERE, als gij niet uitgaat, zo er een man dezen nacht bij u zal vernachten! En dit zal u kwader zijn, dan al het kwaad, dat over u gekomen is van uw jeugd af tot nu toe. 8Toen stond de koning op, en zette zich in de poort. En zij lieten al het volk weten, zeggende: Ziet, de koning zit in de poort. Toen kwam al het volk voor des konings aangezicht, maar Israel was gevloden, een iegelijk naar zijn tenten. 9En al het volk, in alle stammen van Israel, was onder zich twistende, zeggende: De koning heeft ons gered van de hand onzer vijanden en hij heeft ons bevrijd van de hand der Filistijnen, en nu is hij uit het land gevlucht voor Absalom; 10En Absalom, dien wij over ons gezalfd hadden, is in den strijd gestorven; nu dan, waarom zwijgt gijlieden van den koning weder te halen? 11Toen zond de koning David tot Zadok en tot Abjathar, de priesteren, zeggende: Spreekt tot de oudsten van Juda, zeggende: Waarom zoudt gijlieden de laatsten zijn, om den koning weder te halen in zijn huis? (Want de rede van het ganse Israel was tot den koning gekomen in zijn huis.) 12Gij zijt mijn broederen; mijn been en mijn vlees zijt gij; waarom zoudt gij dan de laatsten zijn, om den koning weder te halen? 13En tot Amasa zult gijlieden zeggen: Zijt gij niet mijn been en mijn vlees? God doe mij zo, en doe er zo toe, zo gij niet krijgsoverste zult zijn voor mijn aangezicht, te allen dage, in Joabs plaats. 14Alzo neigde hij het hart aller mannen van Juda, als van een enigen man; en zij zonden henen tot den koning, zeggende: Keer weder, gij en al uw knechten. 15Toen keerde de koning weder, en kwam tot aan de Jordaan; en Juda kwam te Gilgal, om den koning tegemoet te gaan, dat zij den koning over de Jordaan voerden. 16En Simei, de zoon van Gera, een zoon van Jemini, die van Bahurim was, haastte zich, en kwam af met de mannen van Juda, den koning David tegemoet; 17En duizend man van Benjamin met hem; ook Ziba, de knecht van Sauls huis, en zijn vijftien zonen en zijn twintig knechten met hem; en zij togen vaardiglijk over de Jordaan, voor den koning. 18Als nu de pont overvoer, om het huis des konings over te halen, en te doen, wat goed was in zijn ogen, zo viel Simei, de zoon van Gera, neder voor het aangezicht des konings, als hij over de Jordaan voer; 19En hij zeide tot den koning: Mijn heer rekene mij niet toe de misdaad, en gedenke niet, wat uw knecht verkeerdelijk gedaan heeft, te dien dage, als mijn heer de koning uit Jeruzalem uitging, dat het de koning zich ter harte zoude nemen. 20Want uw knecht weet het zekerlijk, ik heb gezondigd; doch zie, ik ben heden gekomen, de eerste van het ganse huis van Jozef, om mijn heer den koning tegemoet af te komen. 21Toen antwoordde Abisai, de zoon van Zeruja, en zeide: Zou dan Simei hiervoor niet gedood worden? Zo hij toch den gezalfde des HEEREN gevloekt heeft. 22Maar David zeide: Wat heb ik met ulieden te doen, gij zonen van Zeruja! Dat gij mij heden ten satan zoudt zijn? Zou heden iemand gedood worden in Israel? Want weet ik niet, dat ik heden koning geworden ben over Israel? 23En de koning zeide tot Simei: Gij zult niet sterven. En de koning zwoer hem. 24Mefiboseth, Sauls zoon, kwam ook af den koning tegemoet; en hij had zijn voeten niet schoongemaakt, noch zijn knevelbaard beschoren, noch zijn klederen gewassen, van dien dag af, dat de koning was weggegaan, tot dien dag toe, dat hij met vrede wederkwam. 25En het geschiedde, als hij te Jeruzalem den koning tegemoet kwam, dat de koning tot hem zeide: Waarom zijt gij niet met mij getogen, Mefiboseth? 26En hij zeide: Mijn heer koning, mijn knecht heeft mij bedrogen; want uw knecht zeide: Ik zal mij een ezel zadelen, en daarop rijden, en tot den koning trekken, want uw knecht is kreupel. 27Daartoe heeft hij uw knecht bij mijn heer den koning valselijk aangedragen; doch mijn heer de koning is als een engel Gods; doe dan, wat goed is in uw ogen. 28Want al mijns vaders huis is niet geweest, dan maar lieden des doods voor mijn heer den koning; nochtans hebt gij uw knecht gezet onder degenen, die aan uw tafel eten; wat heb ik dan meer voor gerechtigheid, en meer te roepen aan den koning? 29Toen zeide de koning tot hem: Waarom spreekt gij meer van uw zaken? Ik heb gezegd: Gij en Ziba, deelt het land. 30En Mefiboseth zeide tot den koning: Hij neme het ook gans weg, naardien mijn heer de koning met vrede in zijn huis is gekomen. 31Barzillai, de Gileadiet, kwam ook af van Rogelim; en hij toog met den koning over de Jordaan, om hem over de Jordaan te geleiden. 32Barzillai nu was zeer oud, een man van tachtig jaren; en hij had den koning onderhouden, toen hij te Mahanaim zijn verblijf had; want hij was een zeer groot man. 33En de koning zeide tot Barzillai: Trekt gij met mij over, en ik zal u bij mij te Jeruzalem onderhouden. 34Maar Barzillai zeide tot den koning: Hoe veel zullen de dagen der jaren mijns levens zijn, dat ik met den koning zou optrekken naar Jeruzalem? 35Ik ben heden tachtig jaren oud; zou ik kunnen onderscheiden tussen goed en kwaad? Zou uw knecht kunnen smaken, wat ik eet en wat ik drink? Zoude ik meer kunnen horen naar de stem der zangers en zangeressen? En waarom zou uw knecht mijn heer den koning verder tot een last zijn? 36Uw knecht zal maar een weinig met den koning over de Jordaan gaan; waarom toch zou mij de koning zulk een vergelding doen? 37Laat toch uw knecht wederkeren, dat ik sterve in mijn stad, bij het graf mijns vaders en mijner moeder; maar zie, daar is uw knecht Chimham, laat dien met mijn heer den koning overtrekken, en doe hem, wat goed is in uw ogen. 38Toen zeide de koning: Chimham zal met mij overtrekken, en ik zal hem doen, wat goed is in uw ogen; ja, alles, wat gij op mij begeren zult, zal ik u doen. 39Toen nu al het volk over de Jordaan gegaan was, en de koning ook was overgegaan, kuste de koning Barzillai, en zegende hem; alzo keerde hij weder naar zijn plaats. 40En de koning toog voort naar Gilgal, en Chimham toog met hem voort; en al het volk van Juda had den koning overgevoerd, als ook een gedeelte van het volk Israels. 41En ziet, alle mannen van Israel kwamen tot den koning; en zij zeiden tot den koning: Waarom hebben u onze broeders, de mannen van Juda, gestolen, en hebben den koning en zijn huis over de Jordaan gevoerd, en alle mannen Davids met hem? 42Toen antwoordden alle mannen van Juda tegen de mannen van Israel: Omdat de koning ons na verwant is; en waarom zijt gij nu toornig over deze zaak? Hebben wij dan enigszins gegeten van des konings kost, of heeft hij ons een geschenk geschonken? 43En de mannen van Israel antwoordden den mannen van Juda, en zeiden: Wij hebben tien delen aan den koning, en ook aan David, wij, meer dan gij; waarom hebt gij ons dan gering geacht, dat ons woord niet het eerste geweest is, om onzen koning weder te halen? Maar het woord der mannen van Juda was harder dan het woord der mannen van Israel.
