1Y ACONTECIÓ que habiendo Samuel envejecido, puso sus hijos por jueces sobre Israel. 2Y el nombre de su hijo primogénito fué Joel, y el nombre del segundo, Abia: fueron jueces en Beer-sebah. 3Mas no anduvieron los hijos por los caminos de su padre, antes se ladearon tras la avaricia, recibiendo cohecho y pervirtiendo el derecho. 4Entonces todos los ancianos de Israel se juntaron, y vinieron á Samuel en Rama, 5Y dijéronle: He aquí tú has envejecido, y tus hijos no van por tus caminos: por tanto, constitúyenos ahora un rey que nos juzgue, como todas las gentes. 6Y descontentó á Samuel esta palabra que dijeron: Danos rey que nos juzgue. Y Samuel oró á Jehová. 7Y dijo Jehová á Samuel: Oye la voz del pueblo en todo lo que te dijeren: porque no te han desechado á ti, sino á mí me han desechado, para que no reine sobre ellos. 8Conforme á todas las obras que han hecho desde el día que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy, que me han dejado y han servido á dioses ajenos, así hacen también contigo. 9Ahora pues, oye su voz: mas protesta contra ellos declarándoles el derecho del rey que ha de reinar sobre ellos. 10Y dijo Samuel todas las palabras de Jehová al pueblo que le había pedido rey. 11Dijo pues: Este será el derecho del rey que hubiere de reinar sobre vosotros: tomará vuestros hijos, y pondrálos en sus carros, y en su gente de á caballo, para que corran delante de su carro: 12Y se elegirá capitanes de mil, y capitanes de cincuenta: pondrálos asimismo á que aren sus campos, y sieguen sus mieses, y á que hagan sus armas de guerra, y los pertrechos de sus carros: 13Tomará también vuestras hijas para que sean perfumadoras, cocineras, y amasadoras. 14Asimismo tomará vuestras tierras, vuestras viñas, y vuestros buenos olivares, y los dará á sus siervos. 15El diezmará vuestras simientes y vuestras viñas, para dar á sus eunucos y á sus siervos. 16El tomará vuestros siervos, y vuestras siervas, y vuestros buenos mancebos, y vuestros asnos, y con ellos hará sus obras. 17Diezmará también vuestro rebaño, y seréis sus siervos. 18Y clamaréis aquel día á causa de vuestro rey que os habréis elegido, mas Jehová no os oirá en aquel día. 19Empero el pueblo no quiso oir la voz de Samuel; antes dijeron: No, sino que habrá rey sobre nosotros: 20Y nosotros seremos también como todas las gentes, y nuestro rey nos gobernará, y saldrá delante de nosotros, y hará nuestras guerras. 21Y oyó Samuel todas las palabras del pueblo, y refiriólas en oídos de Jehová. 22Y Jehová dijo á Samuel: Oye su voz, y pon rey sobre ellos. Entonces dijo Samuel á los varones de Israel: Idos cada uno á su ciudad.
1When Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel. 2Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beersheba. 3His sons didn’t walk in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice. 4Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel to Ramah; 5and they said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” 6But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to Yahweh. 7Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them. 8According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to you. 9Now therefore listen to their voice: however you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who shall reign over them.” 10Samuel told all Yahweh’s words to the people who asked of him a king. 11He said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them to him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots; 12and he will appoint them to him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and he will assign some to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots. 13He will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. 14He will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive groves, even their best, and give them to his servants. 15He will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. 16He will take your male servants, and your female servants, and your best young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17He will take the tenth of your flocks: and you shall be his servants. 18You shall cry out in that day because of your king whom you shall have chosen you; and Yahweh will not answer you in that day.” 19But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No; but we will have a king over us, 20that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.” 21Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Yahweh. 22Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”
1Het geschiedde nu, toen Samuel oud geworden was, zo stelde hij zijn zonen tot richters over Israel. 2De naam van zijn eerstgeborenen zoon nu was Joel, en de naam van zijn tweeden was Abia; zij waren richters te Ber-seba. 3Doch zijn zonen wandelden niet in zijn wegen; maar zij neigden zich tot de gierigheid, en namen geschenken, en bogen het recht. 4Toen vergaderden zich alle oudsten van Israel, en zij kwamen tot Samuel te Rama; 5En zij zeiden tot hem: Zie, gij zijt oud geworden, en uw zonen wandelen niet in uw wegen; zo zet nu een koning over ons, om ons te richten, gelijk al de volken hebben. 6Maar dit woord was kwaad in de ogen van Samuel, als zij zeiden: Geef ons een koning, om ons te richten. En Samuel bad den HEERE aan. 7Doch de HEERE zeide tot Samuel: Hoor naar de stem des volks in alles, wat zij tot u zeggen zullen; want zij hebben u niet verworpen, maar zij hebben Mij verworpen, dat Ik geen Koning over hen zal zijn. 8Naar de werken, die zij gedaan hebben, van dien dag af, toen Ik hen uit Egypte geleid heb, tot op dezen dag toe, en hebben Mij verlaten en andere goden gediend; alzo doen zij u ook. 9Hoor dan nu naar hun stem; doch als gij hen op het hoogste zult betuigd hebben, zo zult gij hen te kennen geven de wijze des konings, die over hen regeren zal. 10Samuel nu zeide al de woorden des HEEREN het volk aan, hetwelk een koning van hem begeerde. 11En zeide: Dit zal des konings wijze zijn, die over u regeren zal: hij zal uw zonen nemen, dat hij hen zich stelle tot zijn wagen, en tot zijn ruiteren, dat zij voor zijn wagen henen lopen; 12En dat hij hen zich stelle tot oversten der duizenden, en tot oversten der vijftigen; en dat zij zijn akker ploegen, en dat zij zijn oogst oogsten, en dat zij zijn krijgswapenen maken, mitsgaders zijn wapentuig. 13En uw dochteren zal hij nemen tot apothekeressen, en tot keukenmaagden, en tot baksters. 14En uw akkers, en uw wijngaarden, en uw olijfgaarden, die de beste zijn, zal hij nemen, en zal ze aan zijn knechten geven. 15En uw zaad, en uw wijngaarden zal hij vertienen, en hij zal ze aan zijn hovelingen, en aan zijn knechten geven. 16En hij zal uw knechten, en uw dienstmaagden, en uw beste jongelingen, en uw ezelen nemen, en hij zal zijn werk daarmede doen. 17Hij zal uw kudden vertienen; en gij zult hem tot knechten zijn. 18Gij zult wel te dien dage roepen, vanwege uw koning, dien gij u zult verkoren hebben, maar de HEERE zal u te dien dage niet verhoren. 19Doch het volk weigerde Samuels stem te horen; en zij zeiden: Neen, maar er zal een koning over ons zijn. 20En wij zullen ook zijn gelijk al de volken; en onze koning zal ons richten, en hij zal voor onze aangezichten uitgaan, en hij zal onze krijgen voeren. 21Als Samuel al de woorden des volks gehoord had, zo sprak hij dezelve voor de oren des HEEREN. 22De HEERE nu zeide tot Samuel: Hoor naar hun stem, en stel hun een koning. Toen zeide Samuel tot de mannen van Israel: Gaat heen, een iegelijk naar zijn stad.
