1Η δε πείνα επεβάρυνεν επί την γην. 2Και αφού ετελείωσαν τρώγοντες τον σίτον, τον οποίον έφεραν εξ Αιγύπτου, είπε προς αυτούς ο πατήρ αυτών, Υπάγετε πάλιν, αγοράσατε εις ημάς ολίγας τροφάς. 3Και είπε προς αυτόν ο Ιούδας λέγων, Εντόνως διεμαρτυρήθη προς ημάς ο άνθρωπος λέγων, Δεν θέλετε ιδεί το πρόσωπόν μου, εάν δεν ήναι μεθ' υμών ο αδελφός υμών. 4Εάν λοιπόν αποστείλης τον αδελφόν ημών μεθ' ημών, θέλομεν καταβή και θέλομεν σοι αγοράσει τροφάς· 5αλλ' εάν δεν αποστείλης αυτόν, δεν θέλομεν καταβή· διότι ο άνθρωπος είπε προς ημάς, Δεν θέλετε ιδεί το πρόσωπόν μου, εάν ο αδελφός υμών δεν ήναι μεθ' υμών. 6Είπε δε ο Ισραήλ, Διά τι με εκακοποιήσατε, φανερόνοντες προς τον άνθρωπον ότι έχετε άλλον αδελφόν; 7Οι δε είπον, Ο άνθρωπος ηρώτησεν ημάς ακριβώς περί ημών και περί της συγγενείας ημών λέγων, Ο πατήρ σας έτι ζη; έχετε άλλον αδελφόν; Και απεκρίθημεν προς αυτόν κατά την ερώτησιν ταύτην· ηδυνάμεθα να εξεύρωμεν ότι ήθελεν ειπεί, Φέρετε τον αδελφόν σας; 8Και είπεν ο Ιούδας προς Ισραήλ τον πατέρα αυτού, Απόστειλον το παιδάριον μετ' εμού, και σηκωθέντες ας υπάγωμεν, διά να ζήσωμεν και να μη αποθάνωμεν και ημείς και συ και αι οικογένειαι ημών· 9εγώ εγγυώμαι περί αυτού· εκ της χειρός μου ζήτησον αυτόν· εάν δεν φέρω αυτόν προς σε και στήσω αυτόν έμπροσθέν σου, τότε ας ήμαι διαπαντός υπεύθυνος προς σέ· 10επειδή, εάν δεν εβραδύνομεν, βέβαια έως τώρα δευτέραν ταύτην φοράν ηθέλομεν επιστρέψει. 11Και είπε προς αυτούς Ισραήλ ο πατήρ αυτών, Εάν ούτω πρέπη να γείνη, κάμετε λοιπόν τούτο· λάβετε εις τα αγγείά σας εκ των καλητέρων καρπών της γης και φέρετε δώρα προς τον άνθρωπον, ολίγον βάλσαμον και ολίγον μέλι, αρώματα και μύρον, πιστάκια και αμύγδαλα· 12και λάβετε διπλάσιον αργύριον εις τας χείρας σας· και το αργύριον το επιστραφέν εν τω στόματι των σακκίων σας φέρετε πάλιν εις τας χείρας σας· ίσως έγεινε κατά λάθος· 13και τον αδελφόν σας λάβετε και σηκωθέντες επιστρέψατε προς τον άνθρωπον· 14και ο Θεός ο Παντοδύναμος να σας δώση χάριν έμπροσθεν του ανθρώπου, διά να αποστείλη με σας τον άλλον σας αδελφόν και τον Βενιαμίν· και εγώ, αν ήναι να ατεκνωθώ, ας ατεκνωθώ. 15Λαβόντες δε οι άνθρωποι τα δώρα ταύτα, έλαβον και αργύριον διπλάσιον εις τας χείρας αυτών και τον Βενιαμίν· και σηκωθέντες κατέβησαν εις Αίγυπτον και παρεστάθησαν έμπροσθεν του Ιωσήφ. 16Και ότε είδεν ο Ιωσήφ τον Βενιαμίν μετ' αυτών, είπε προς τον επιστάτην της οικίας αυτού, Φέρε τους ανθρώπους εις την οικίαν και σφάξον σφακτόν και ετοίμασον, διότι μετ' εμού θέλουσι φάγει οι άνθρωποι το μεσημέριον. 17Και έπραξεν ο άνθρωπος καθώς ελάλησεν ο Ιωσήφ· και ο άνθρωπος εισήγαγε τους ανθρώπους εις την οικίαν του Ιωσήφ. 18Και εφοβήθησαν οι άνθρωποι, διότι εισήχθησαν εις την οικίαν του Ιωσήφ· και είπον, διά το αργύριον το επιστραφέν εις τα σακκία ημών την πρώτην φοράν ημείς εισαγόμεθα, διά να εύρη αφορμήν εναντίον ημών και να επιπέση εφ' ημάς και να λάβη ημάς δούλους και τους όνους ημών. 19Και προσελθόντες προς τον άνθρωπον τον επιστάτην της οικίας του Ιωσήφ, ελάλησαν προς αυτόν εν τη πύλη της οικίας· 20και είπον, Δεόμεθα, κύριε· κατέβημεν την πρώτην φοράν διά να αγοράσωμεν τροφάς· 21και ότε ήλθομεν εις το κατάλυμα, ηνοίξαμεν τα σακκία ημών και ιδού, εκάστου το αργύριον ήτο εν τω στόματι του σακκίου αυτού, το αργύριον ημών σωστόν· όθεν εφέραμεν αυτό οπίσω εις τας χείρας ημών· 22εφέραμεν και άλλο αργύριον εις τας χείρας ημών, διά να αγοράσωμεν τροφάς· δεν εξεύρομεν τις έβαλε το αργύριον ημών εις τα σακκία ημών. 23Ο δε είπεν, Ειρήνη εις εσάς· μη φοβείσθε· ο Θεός σας και ο Θεός του πατρός σας, έδωκεν εις εσάς θησαυρόν εις τα σακκία σας· το αργύριόν σας ήλθεν εις εμέ. Και εξήγαγε προς αυτούς τον Συμεών. 24Και ο άνθρωπος εισήγαγε τους ανθρώπους εις την οικίαν του Ιωσήφ και έδωκεν ύδωρ και ένιψαν τους πόδας αυτών· και έδωκε τροφήν εις τους όνους αυτών. 25Οι δε ητοίμασαν τα δώρα, εωσού έλθη ο Ιωσήφ το μεσημέριον· διότι ήκουσαν ότι εκεί μέλλουσι να φάγωσιν άρτον. 26Και ότε ήλθεν ο Ιωσήφ εις την οικίαν, προσέφεραν εις αυτόν τα δώρα τα εις τας χείρας αυτών εν τη οικία και προσεκύνησαν αυτόν έως εδάφους. 27Και ηρώτησεν αυτούς περί της υγιείας αυτών· και είπεν, Υγιαίνει ο πατήρ σας, ο γέρων περί του οποίου μοι είπετε; έτι ζη; 28Οι δε είπον, Υγιαίνει ο δούλός σου ο πατήρ ημών· έτι ζη. Και κύψαντες προσεκύνησαν. 29Υψώσας δε τους οφθαλμούς αυτού είδε τον Βενιαμίν τον αδελφόν αυτού τον ομομήτριον και είπεν, Ούτος είναι ο αδελφός σας ο νεώτερος, περί του οποίου μοι είπετε; Και είπεν, Ο Θεός να σε ελεήση, τέκνον μου. 30Και έσπευσε να αποσυρθή ο Ιωσήφ· διότι συνεταράττοντο τα σπλάγχνα αυτού διά τον αδελφόν αυτού· και εζήτει τόπον να κλαύση· εισελθών δε εις το ταμείον, έκλαυσεν εκεί. 31Έπειτα νίψας το πρόσωπον αυτού εξήλθε, και συγκρατών εαυτόν είπε, Βάλετε άρτον. 32Και έβαλον χωριστά δι' αυτόν και χωριστά δι' εκείνους και διά τους Αιγυπτίους, τους συντρώγοντας μετ' αυτού, χωριστά· διότι οι Αιγύπτιοι δεν ηδύναντο να συμφάγωσιν άρτον μετά των Εβραίων, επειδή τούτο είναι βδέλυγμα εις τους Αιγυπτίους. 33Εκάθισαν λοιπόν έμπροσθεν αυτού, ο πρωτότοκος κατά την πρωτοτοκίαν αυτού και ο νεώτερος κατά την νεότητα αυτού· και εθαύμαζον οι άνθρωποι προς αλλήλους. 34Λαβών δε απ' έμπροσθεν αυτού μερίδια έστειλε προς αυτούς· το μερίδιον όμως του Βενιαμίν ήτο πενταπλασίως μεγαλήτερον παρά εκάστου αυτών. Και έπιον και ευφράνθησαν μετ' αυτού.
1The famine was severe in the land. 2When they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little more food.” 3Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’ 4If you’ll send our brother with us, we’ll go down and buy you food, 5but if you’ll not send him, we’ll not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’” 6Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?” 7They said, “The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down?’” 8Judah said to Israel, his father, “Send the boy with me, and we’ll get up and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones. 9I’ll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever, 10for if we hadn’t delayed, surely we would have returned a second time by now.” 11Their father, Israel, said to them, “If it must be so, then do this. Take from the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds; 12and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. 13Take your brother also, get up, and return to the man. 14May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” 15The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and got up, went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph. 16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and prepare; for the men will dine with me at noon.” 17The man did as Joseph commanded, and the man brought the men to Joseph’s house. 18The men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time, we’re brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, attack us, and seize us as slaves, along with our donkeys.” 19They came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house, 20and said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food. 21When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand. 22We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.” 23He said, “Peace be to you. Don’t be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” He brought Simeon out to them. 24The man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He gave their donkeys fodder. 25They prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26When Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves down to him to the earth. 27He asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?” 28They said, “Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive.” They bowed down humbly. 29He lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin, his brother, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” He said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30Joseph hurried, for his heart yearned over his brother; and he sought a place to weep. He entered into his room, and wept there. 31He washed his face, and came out. He controlled himself, and said, “Serve the meal.” 32They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, that ate with him, by themselves, because the Egyptians don’t eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. 33They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled one with another. 34He sent portions to them from before him, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.

Uw God en de God uws vaders heeft u een schat in uw zakken gegeven; uw geld is tot mij gekomen. Leeft hij nog? 28En zij zeiden: Het is wel met uw knecht, onzen vader, hij leeft nog; en zij neigden het hoofd en bogen zich neder. 29En hij hief zijn ogen op, en zag Benjamin, zijn broeder, den zoon zijner moeder, en zeide: Is dit uw kleinste broeder, waarvan gij tot mij zeidet? God zij u genadig! 30En Jozef haastte zich; want zijn ingewand ontstak jegens zijn broeder, en hij zocht te wenen; en hij ging in een kamer, en weende aldaar. 31Daarna wies hij zijn aangezicht en kwam uit; en hij bedwong zichzelven, en zeide: Zet brood op. 32En zij richtten voor hem aan in het bijzonder, en voor hen in het bijzonder; en voor de Egyptenaren, die met hem aten, in het bijzonder; want de Egyptenaars mogen geen brood eten met de Hebreen, dewijl zulks den Egyptenaren een gruwel is. 33En zij aten voor zijn aangezicht, de eerstgeborene naar zijn eerstgeboorte, en de jongere naar zijn jonkheid; dies verwonderden zich de mannen onder elkander. 34En hij langde hun van de gerechten, die voor hem waren; maar Benjamins gerecht was vijfmaal groter, dan de gerechten van hen allen. En zij dronken, en zij werden dronken met hem.
