1Hỡi Thê-ô-phi-lơ quí nhơn, vì có nhiều kẻ dốc lòng chép sử về những sự đã làm nên trong chúng ta, 2theo như các người chứng kiến từ lúc ban đầu và trở nên người giảng đạo đã truyền lại cho chúng ta, 3vậy, sau khi đã xét kỹ càng từ đầu mọi sự ấy, tôi cũng tưởng nên theo thứ tự viết mà tỏ ra cho ông, 4để ông biết những điều mình đã học là chắc chắn. 5Trong đời Hê-rốt, vua nước Giu-đê, có một thầy tế lễ, về ban A-bi-a, tên là Xa-cha-ri; vợ người là Ê-li-sa-bét, thuộc về chi phái A-rôn. 6Cả hai đều là công bình trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời, vâng giữ mọi điều răn và lễ nghi của Chúa một cách không chỗ trách được. 7Hai người không có con, vì Ê-li-sa-bét son sẻ, và cả hai đều cao tuổi. 8Vả, Xa-cha-ri cứ theo thứ tự trong ban mình mà làm chức tế lễ trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời. 9Khi đã bắt thăm theo lệ các thầy cả lập ra rồi, thì người được gọi vào nơi thánh của Chúa để dâng hương. 10Ðương giờ dâng hương, cả đoàn dân đông đều ở ngoài cầu nguyện. 11Bấy giờ có một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện ra cùng Xa-cha-ri, đứng bên hữu bàn thờ xông hương. 12Xa-cha-ri thấy thì bối rối sợ hãi. 13Nhưng thiên sứ nói cùng người rằng: Hỡi Xa-cha-ri, đừng sợ, vì lời cầu nguyện ngươi đã được nhậm rồi. Ê-li-sa-bét vợ ngươi, sẽ sanh một con trai, ngươi khá đặt tên là Giăng. 14Con trai đó sẽ làm cho ngươi vui mừng hớn hở, và nhiều kẻ sẽ mừng rỡ về sự sanh người ra. 15Vì người sẽ nên tôn trọng trước mặt Chúa; không uống rượu hay là giống gì làm cho say, và sẽ được đầy dẫy Ðức Thánh Linh từ khi còn trong lòng mẹ. 16Người sẽ làm cho nhiều con trai Y-sơ-ra-ên trở lại cùng Chúa, là Ðức Chúa Trời của họ; 17chính người lại sẽ lấy tâm thần quyền phép Ê-li mà đi trước mặt Chúa, để đem lòng cha trở về con cái, kẻ loạn nghịch đến sự khôn ngoan của người công bình, đặng sửa soạn cho Chúa một dân sẵn lòng. 18Xa-cha-ri thưa rằng: Bởi sao tôi biết được điều đó? Vì tôi đã già, vợ tôi đã cao tuổi rồi. 19Thiên sứ trả lời rằng: Ta là Gáp-ri-ên, đứng rồi mặt Ðức Chúa Trời; Ngài đã sai ta đến truyền cho ngươi và báo tin mừng nầy. 20Nầy, ngươi sẽ câm, không nói được cho đến ngày nào các điều ấy xảy ra, vì ngươi không tin lời ta, là lời đến kỳ sẽ ứng nghiệm. 21Bấy giờ, dân chúng đợi Xa-cha-ri, và lấy làm lạ, vì người ở lâu trong nơi thánh. 22Khi Xa-cha-ri ra, không nói với chúng được, thì họ mới hiểu rằng người đã thấy sự hiện thấy gì trong đền thánh; người ra dấu cho họ, mà vẫn còn câm. 23Khi những ngày về phần việc mình đã trọn, người trở về nhà. 24Khỏi ít lâu, vợ người là Ê-li-sa-bét chịu thai, ẩn mình đi trong năm tháng, mà nói rằng: 25Ấy là ơn Chúa đã làm cho tôi, khi Ngài đã đoái đến tôi, để cất sự xấu hổ tôi giữa mọi người. 26Ðến tháng thứ sáu, Ðức Chúa Trời sai thiên sứ Gáp-ri-ên đến thành Na-xa-rét, xứ Ga-li-lê, 27tới cùng một người nữ đồng trinh tên là Ma-ri, đã hứa gả cho một người nam tên là Giô-sép, về dòng vua Ða-vít. 28Thiên sứ vào chỗ người nữ ở, nói rằng: Hỡi người được ơn, mừng cho ngươi; Chúa ở cùng ngươi. 29Ma-ri nghe nói thì bối rối, tự hỏi rằng lời chào ấy có nghĩa gì. 30Thiên-sứ bèn nói rằng: Hỡi Ma-ri, đừng sợ, vì ngươi đã được ơn trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời. 31Nầy, ngươi sẽ chịu thai và sanh một con trai mà đặt tên là Jêsus. 32Con trai ấy sẽ nên tôn trọng, được xưng là Con của Ðấng Rất Cao; và Chúa, là Ðức Chúa Trời, sẽ ban cho Ngài ngôi Ða-vít là tổ phụ Ngài. 33Ngài sẽ trị vì đời đời nhà Gia-cốp, nước Ngài vô cùng. 34Ma-ri bèn thưa rằng: Tôi chẳng hề nhận biết người nam nào, thì làm sao có được sự đó? 35Thiên sứ truyền rằng: Ðức Thánh Linh sẽ đến trên ngươi, và quyền phép Ðấng Rất Cao sẽ che phủ ngươi dưới bóng mình, cho nên con thánh sanh ra, phải xưng là Con Ðức Chúa Trời. 36Kìa, Ê-li-sa-bét, bà con ngươi, cũng đã chịu thai một trai trong lúc già nua; người ấy vốn có tiếng là son, mà nay cưu mang được sáu tháng rồi. 37Bởi vì không việc chi Ðức Chúa Trời chẳng làm được. 38Ma-ri thưa rằng: Tôi đây là tôi tớ Chúa; xin sự ấy xảy ra cho tôi như lời người truyền! Ðoạn thiên sứ kìa khỏi Ma-ri. 39Trong những ngày đó, Ma-ri chờ dậy, lật đật đi trong miền núi, đến một thành về xứ Giu-đa, 40vào nhà Xa-cha-ri mà chào Ê-li-sa-bét. 41Vả, Ê-li-sa-bét vừa nghe tiếng Ma-ri chào, con nhỏ trong lòng liền nhảy nhót; và Ê-li-sa-bét được đầy Ðức Thánh Linh, 42bèn cất tiếng kêu rằng: Ngươi có phải trong đám đờn bà, thai trong lòng ngươi cũng được phước. 43Nhơn đâu ta được sự vẻ vang nầy, là mẹ Chúa ta đến thăm ta? 44Bởi vì tai ta mới nghe tiếng ngươi chào, thì con nhỏ ở trong lòng ta liền nhảy mừng. 45Phước cho người đã tin, vì lời Chúa truyền cho sẽ được ứng nghiệm! 46Ma-ri bèn nói rằng: Linh hồn tôi ngợi khen Chúa, 47Tâm thần tôi mừng rỡ trong Ðức Chúa Trời, là Cứu Chúa tôi. 48Vì Ngài đã đoái đến sự hèn hạ của tôi tớ Ngài. Nầy, từ rày về sau, muôn đời sẽ khen tôi là có phước; 49Bởi Ðấng Toàn Năng đã làm các việc lớn cho tôi. Danh Ngài là thánh, 50Và Ngài thương xót kẻ kính sợ Ngài từ đời nầy sang đời kia. 51Ngài đã dùng cánh tay mình để tỏ ra quyền phép; Và phá tan mưu của kẻ kiêu ngạo toan trong lòng. 52Ngài đã cách người có quyền khỏi ngôi họ, Và nhắc kẻ khiêm nhượng lên. 53Ngài đã làm cho kẻ đói được đầy thức ăn ngon, Và đuổi kẻ giàu về tay không. 54Ngài đã vùa giúp Y-sơ-ra-ên, tôi tớ Ngài, Và nhớ lại sự thương xót mình. Ðối với Áp-ra-ham cùng con cháu người luôn luôn, 55Như Ngài đã phán cùng tổ phụ chúng ta vậy. 56Ma-ri với Ê-li-sa-bét chừng ba tháng, rồi trở về nhà mình. 57Bấy giờ, đến ngày mãn nguyệt, Ê-li-sa-bét sanh được một trai. 58Xóm riềng bà con nghe Chúa tỏ ra sự thương xót cả thể cho Ê-li-sa-bét, thì chia vui cùng người. 59Qua ngày thứ tám, họ đều đến để làm lễ cắt bì cho con trẻ; và đặt tên là Xa-cha-ri theo tên của cha. 60Nhưng mẹ nói rằng: Không! phải đặt tên con là Giăng. 61Họ nói: Trong bà con ngươi không ai có tên đó. 62Họ bèn ra dấu hỏi cha muốn đặt tên gì cho con. 63Xa-cha-ri biểu lấy bảng nhỏ, và viết rằng: Giăng là tên nó. Ai nấy đều lấy làm lạ. 64Tức thì miệng người mở ra, lưỡi được thong thả, nói và ngợi khen Ðức Chúa Trời. 65Hết thảy xóm giềng đều kinh sợ, và người ta nói chuyện với nhau về mọi sự ấy khắp miền núi xứ Giu-đê. 66Ai nghe cũng ghi vào lòng mà nói rằng: Ấy vậy, con trẻ đó sẽ ra thể nào? Vì tay Chúa ở cùng con trẻ ấy. 67Bấy giờ, Xa-cha-ri, cho con trẻ ấy, được đầy dẫy Ðức Thánh Linh, thì nói tiên tri rằng: 68Ngợi khen Chúa, là Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, Vì đã thăm viếng và chuộc dân Ngài, 69Cùng sanh ra cho chúng tôi trong nhà Ða-vít, tôi tớ Ngài, Một Ðấng Cứu thế có quyền phép! 70Như lời Ngài đã dùng miệng các thánh tiên tri phán từ thuở trước, 71Ngài cứu chúng tôi khỏi kẻ thù và tay mọi người ghen ghét chúng tôi; 72Ngài tỏ lòng thương xót đến tổ tông chúng tôi, Và nhớ lại giao ước thánh của Ngài, 73Theo như Ngài đã thề với Áp-ra-ham là tổ phụ chúng tôi, 74Mà hứa rằng khi chúng tôi đã được cứu khỏi tay kẻ nghịch thù, Ngài sẽ ban ơn lành cho chúng tôi, trước một Ngài, 75Lấy sự thánh khiết và công bình mà hầu việc Ngài, trọn đời mình không sợ hãi chi hết. 76Hỡi con trẻ, người ta sẽ kêu con là tiên tri của Ðấng Rất Cao; Con sẽ đi trước mặt Chúa, dọn đường Ngài, 77Ðể cho dân Ngài bởi sự tha tội họ mà biết sự rỗi. 78Vì Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi động lòng thương xót, Và mặt trời mọc lên từ nơi cao thăm viếng chúng tôi, 79Ðể soi những kẻ ngồi chỗ tối tăm và trong bóng sự chết, Cùng đưa chơn chúng tôi đi đường bình an. 80Vả, con trẻ ấy lớn lên, tâm thần mạnh mẽ, ở nơi đồng vắng cho đến ngày tỏ mình ra cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.
1Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, 2even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us, 3it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus; 4that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed. 5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. 7But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years. 8Now while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division, 9according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth. 15For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God. 17He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.” 18Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” 19The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. 20Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.” 21The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple. 22When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute. 23When the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house. 24After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying, 25“Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men.” 26Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!” 29But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be. 30The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’ 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.” 34Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?” 35The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God. 36Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37For everything spoken by God is possible.” 38Mary said, “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word.” The angel departed from her. 39Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah, 40and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42She called out with a loud voice, and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy! 45Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!” 46Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord. 47My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior, 48for he has looked at the humble state of his handmaid. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed. 49For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name. 50His mercy is for generations of generations on those who fear him. 51He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52He has put down princes from their thrones. And has exalted the lowly. 53He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty. 54He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy, 55As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his seed forever.” 56Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house. 57Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she gave birth to a son. 58Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her. 59On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father. 60His mother answered, “Not so; but he will be called John.” 61They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” 62They made signs to his father, what he would have him called. 63He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is John.” They all marveled. 64His mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God. 65Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea. 66All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” The hand of the Lord was with him. 67His father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, 68“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and worked redemption for his people; 69and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70(as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets who have been from of old), 71salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; 72to show mercy towards our fathers, to remember his holy covenant, 73the oath which he spoke to Abraham, our father, 74to grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear, 75In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. 76And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways, 77to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins, 78because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the dawn from on high will visit us, 79to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.” 80The child was growing, and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
1Nademaal velen ter hand genomen hebben, om in orde te stellen een verhaal van de dingen, die onder ons volkomen zekerheid hebben; 2Gelijk ons overgeleverd hebben, die van den beginne zelven aanschouwers en dienaars des Woords geweest zijn; 3Zo heeft het ook mij goed gedacht, hebbende alles van voren aan naarstiglijk onderzocht, vervolgens aan u te schrijven, voortreffelijke Theofilus! 4Opdat gij moogt kennen de zekerheid der dingen, waarvan gij onderwezen zijt. 5In de dagen van Herodes, den koning van Judea, was een zeker priester, met name Zacharias, van de dagorde van Abia; en zijn vrouw was uit de dochteren van Aaron, en haar naam Elizabet. 6En zij waren beiden rechtvaardig voor God, wandelende in al de geboden en rechten des Heeren, onberispelijk. 7En zij hadden geen kind, omdat Elizabet onvruchtbaar was, en zij beiden verre op hun dagen gekomen waren. 8En het geschiedde, dat, als hij het priesterambt bediende voor God, in de beurt zijner dagorde. 9Naar de gewoonte der priesterlijke bediening, hem te lote was gevallen, dat hij zoude ingaan in den tempel des Heeren om te reukofferen. 10En al de menigte des volks was buiten, biddende, ten ure des reukoffers. 11En van hem werd gezien een engel des Heeren, staande ter rechter zijde van het altaar des reukoffers. 12En Zacharias, hem ziende, werd ontroerd, en vreze is op hem gevallen. 13Maar de engel zeide tot hem: Vrees niet, Zacharias! want uw gebed is verhoord, en uw vrouw Elizabet zal u een zoon baren, en gij zult zijn naam heten Johannes. 14En u zal blijdschap en verheuging zijn, en velen zullen zich over zijn geboorte verblijden. 15Want hij zal groot zijn voor den Heere; noch wijn, noch sterken drank zal hij drinken, en hij zal met den Heiligen Geest vervuld worden, ook van zijner moeders lijf aan. 16En hij zal velen der kinderen Israels bekeren tot den Heere, hun God. 17En hij zal voor Hem heengaan, in den geest en de kracht van Elias, om te bekeren de harten der vaderen tot de kinderen, en de ongehoorzamen tot de voorzichtigheid der rechtvaardigen, om den Heere te bereiden een toegerust volk. 18En Zacharias zeide tot den engel: Waarbij zal ik dat weten? Want ik ben oud, en mijn vrouw is verre op haar dagen gekomen. 19En de engel antwoordde en zeide tot hem: Ik ben Gabriel, die voor God sta, en ben uitgezonden, om tot u te spreken, en u deze dingen te verkondigen. 20En zie, gij zult zwijgen, en niet kunnen spreken, tot op den dag, dat deze dingen geschied zullen zijn; om dies wil, dat gij mijn woorden niet geloofd hebt, welke vervuld zullen worden op hun tijd. 21En het volk was wachtende op Zacharias, en zij waren verwonderd, dat hij zo lang vertoefde in den tempel. 22En als hij uitkwam, kon hij tot hen niet spreken; en zij bekenden, dat hij een gezicht in den tempel gezien had. En hij wenkte hun toe, en bleef stom. 23En het geschiedde, als de dagen zijner bediening vervuld waren, dat hij naar zijn huis ging. 24En na die dagen werd Elizabet, zijn vrouw, bevrucht; en zij verborg zich vijf maanden, zeggende: 25Alzo heeft mij de Heere gedaan, in de dagen, in welke Hij mij aangezien heeft, om mijn versmaadheid onder de mensen weg te nemen. 26En in de zesde maand werd de engel Gabriel van God gezonden naar een stad in Galilea, genaamd Nazareth; 27Tot een maagd, die ondertrouwd was met een man, wiens naam was Jozef, uit den huize Davids; en de naam der maagd was Maria. 28En de engel tot haar ingekomen zijnde, zeide: Wees gegroet, gij begenadigde; de Heere is met u; gij zijt gezegend onder de vrouwen. 29En als zij hem zag, werd zij zeer ontroerd over dit zijn woord, en overlegde, hoedanig deze groetenis mocht zijn. 30En de engel zeide tot haar: Vrees niet, Maria, want gij hebt genade bij God gevonden. 31En zie, gij zult bevrucht worden, en een Zoon baren, en zult Zijn naam heten JEZUS. 32Deze zal groot zijn, en de Zoon des Allerhoogsten genaamd worden; en God, de Heere, zal Hem den troon van Zijn vader David geven. 33En Hij zal over het huis Jakobs Koning zijn in der eeuwigheid, en Zijns Koninkrijks zal geen einde zijn. 34En Maria zeide tot den engel: Hoe zal dat wezen, dewijl ik geen man bekenne? 35En de engel, antwoordende, zeide tot haar: De Heilige Geest zal over u komen, en de kracht des Allerhoogsten zal u overschaduwen; daarom ook, dat Heilige, Dat uit u geboren zal worden, zal Gods Zoon genaamd worden. 36En zie, Elizabet, uw nicht, is ook zelve bevrucht, met een zoon, in haar ouderdom; en deze maand is haar, die onvruchtbaar genaamd was, de zesde. 37Want geen ding zal bij God onmogelijk zijn. 38En Maria zeide: Zie, de dienstmaagd des Heeren; mij geschiede naar uw woord. En de engel ging weg van haar. 39En Maria, opgestaan zijnde in diezelfde dagen, reisde met haast naar het gebergte, in een stad van Juda; 40En kwam in het huis van Zacharias, en groette Elizabet. 41En het geschiedde, als Elizabet de groetenis van Maria hoorde, zo sprong het kindeken op in haar buik; en Elizabet werd vervuld met den Heiligen Geest; 42En riep uit met een grote stem, en zeide: Gezegend zijt gij onder de vrouwen, en gezegend is de vrucht uws buiks! 43En van waar komt mij dit, dat de moeder mijns Heeren tot mij komt? 44Want zie, als de stem uwer groetenis in mijn oren geschiedde, zo sprong het kindeken van vreugde op in mijn buik. 45En zalig is zij, die geloofd heeft; want de dingen, die haar van den Heere gezegd zijn, zullen volbracht worden. 46En Maria zeide: Mijn ziel maakt groot den Heere; 47En mijn geest verheugt zich in God, mijn Zaligmaker; 48Omdat Hij de nederheid Zijner dienstmaagd heeft aangezien; want zie, van nu aan zullen mij zalig spreken al de geslachten. 49Want grote dingen heeft aan mij gedaan Hij, Die machtig is, en heilig is Zijn Naam. 50En Zijn barmhartigheid is van geslacht tot geslacht over degenen, die Hem vrezen. 51Hij heeft een krachtig werk gedaan door Zijn arm; Hij heeft verstrooid de hoogmoedigen in de gedachten hunner harten. 52Hij heeft machtigen van de tronen afgetrokken, en nederigen heeft Hij verhoogd. 53Hongerigen heeft Hij met goederen vervuld; en rijken heeft Hij ledig weggezonden. 54Hij heeft Israel, Zijn knecht, opgenomen, opdat Hij gedachtig ware der barmhartigheid. 55(Gelijk Hij gesproken heeft tot onze vaderen, namelijk tot Abraham, en zijn zaad) in eeuwigheid. 56En Maria bleef bij haar omtrent drie maanden, en keerde weder tot haar huis. 57En de tijd van Elizabet werd vervuld, dat zij baren zoude, en zij baarde een zoon. 58En die daar rondom woonden, en haar magen hoorden, dat de Heere Zijn barmhartigheid grotelijks aan haar bewezen had, en waren met haar verblijd. 59En het geschiedde, dat zij op den achtsten dag kwamen, om het kindeken te besnijden, en noemden het Zacharias, naar den naam zijns vaders. 60En zijn moeder antwoordde en zeide: Niet alzo, maar hij zal Johannes heten. 61En zij zeiden tot haar: Er is niemand in uw maagschap, die met dien naam genaamd wordt. 62En zij wenkten zijn vader, hoe hij wilde, dat hij genaamd zou worden. 63En als hij een schrijftafeltje geeist had, schreef hij, zeggende: Johannes is zijn naam. En zij verwonderden zich allen. 64En terstond werd zijn mond geopend, en zijn tong losgemaakt; en hij sprak, God lovende. 65En er kwam vrees over allen, die rondom hen woonden; en in het gehele gebergte van Judea werd veel gesproken van al deze dingen. 66En allen, die het hoorden, namen het ter harte, zeggende: Wat zal toch dit kindeken wezen? En de hand des Heeren was met hem. 67En Zacharias, zijn vader, werd vervuld met den Heiligen Geest, en profeteerde, zeggende: 68Geloofd zij de Heere, de God Israels, want Hij heeft bezocht, en verlossing te weeg gebracht Zijn volke; 69En heeft een hoorn der zaligheid ons opgericht, in het huis van David, Zijn knecht; 70Gelijk Hij gesproken heeft door den mond Zijner heilige profeten, die van het begin der wereld geweest zijn; 71Namelijk een verlossing van onze vijanden, en van de hand al dergenen, die ons haten; 72Opdat Hij barmhartigheid deed aan onze vaderen, en gedachtig ware aan Zijn heilig verbond; 73En aan den eed, dien Hij Abraham, onzen vader, gezworen heeft, om ons te geven, 74Dat wij, verlost zijnde uit de hand onzer vijanden, Hem dienen zouden zonder vreze. 75In heiligheid en gerechtigheid voor Hem, al de dagen onzes levens. 76En gij, kindeken, zult een profeet des Allerhoogsten genaamd worden; want gij zult voor het aangezicht des Heeren heengaan, om Zijn wegen te bereiden; 77Om Zijn volk kennis der zaligheid te geven, in vergeving hunner zonden. 78Door de innerlijke bewegingen der barmhartigheid onzes Gods, met welke ons bezocht heeft de Opgang uit de hoogte; 79Om te verschijnen dengenen, die gezeten zijn in duisternis en schaduw des doods; om onze voeten te richten op den weg des vredes. 80En het kindeken wies op, en werd gesterkt in den geest, en was in de woestijnen, tot den dag zijner vertoning aan Israel.
