1Ví bằng có kẻ mong được làm giám mục, ấy là ưa muốn một việc tốt lành; lời đó là phải lắm. 2Vậy, người giám mục cần phải không chỗ trách được, là chồng chỉ một vợ mà thôi, có tiết độ, có tài trí, xứng đáng, hay tiếp khách và khéo dạy dỗ. 3Ðừng mê rượu, cũng đừng hung bạo, nhưng phải mềm mại hòa nhã; lại đừng ham tiền bạc; 4phải khéo cai trị nhà riêng mình, giữ con cái mình cho vâng phục và ngay thật trọn vẹn; 5vì nếu có ai không biết cai trị nhà riêng mình, thì làm sao cai trị được Hội thánh của Ðức Chúa Trời? 6Người mới tin đạo không được làm giám mục, e người tự kiêu mà sa vào án phạt của ma quỉ chăng. 7Người giám mục lại phải được người ngoại làm chứng tốt cho, kẻo bị sỉ nhục và mắc bẫy ma quỉ. 8Các chấp sự cũng phải cho nghiêm trọng, không được nói hai lời, không được ghiền rượu, không được tham lợi phi nghĩa, 9nhưng phải lấy lương tâm thanh sạch giữ lẽ mầu nhiệm của đức tin. 10Những người đó cũng phải chịu thử thách trước đã, nếu không chỗ trách được thì mới được làm chức chấp sự. 11Vợ các chấp sự cũng phải nghiêm trọng, chớ nói xấu, phải có tiết độ và trung tín trong mọi việc. 12Các chấp sự chỉ nên làm chồng của một vợ mà thôi, phải khéo cai trị con cái và nhà riêng mình. 13Vì ai khéo làm chức vụ mình thì được bực cao trọng và lòng rất dạn dĩ trong đức tin đến Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ. 14Ta mong mau mau đến thăm con, nhưng viết thơ nầy, 15phòng ta có chậm đến, thì con biết làm thể nào trong nhà Ðức Chúa Trời, tức là Hội thánh của Ðức Chúa Trời hằng sống, trụ và nền của lẽ thật vậy. 16Mọi người đều cho sự mầu nhiệm của sự tin kính là lớn lắm: Ðấng đã được tỏ ra trong xác thịt, Thì đã được Ðức Thánh Linh xưng là công bình, Ðược thiên sứ trông thấy, Ðược giảng ra cho dân ngoại, Ðược thiên hạ tin cậy, Ðược cất lên trong sự vinh hiển.
1This is a faithful saying: if a man seeks the office of an overseer, he desires a good work. 2The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; 3not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence; 5(but if a man doesn’t know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the assembly of God?) 6not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8Servants, in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money; 9holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10Let them also first be tested; then let them serve if they are blameless. 11Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 14These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly; 15but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in God’s house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great: God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, and received up in glory.
1Dit is een getrouw woord: zo iemand tot eens opzieners ambt lust heeft, die begeert een treffelijk werk. 2Een opziener dan moet onberispelijk zijn, ener vrouwe man, wakker, matig, eerbaar, gaarne herbergende, bekwaam om te leren; 3Niet genegen tot den wijn, geen smijter, geen vuil-gewinzoeker; maar bescheiden, geen vechter, niet geldgierig. 4Die zijn eigen huis wel regeert, zijn kinderen in onderdanigheid houdende, met alle stemmigheid; 5(Want zo iemand zijn eigen huis niet weet te regeren, hoe zal hij voor de Gemeente Gods zorg dragen?) 6Geen nieuweling, opdat hij niet opgeblazen worde, en in het oordeel des duivels valle. 7En hij moet ook een goede getuigenis hebben van degenen, die buiten zijn, opdat hij niet valle in smaadheid, en in den strik des duivels. 8De diakenen insgelijks moeten eerbaar zijn, niet tweetongig, niet die zich tot veel wijns begeven, geen vuil-gewinzoekers; 9Houdende de verborgenheid des geloofs in een rein geweten. 10En dat deze ook eerst beproefd worden, en dat zij daarna dienen, zo zij onbestraffelijk zijn. 11De vrouwen insgelijks moeten eerbaar zijn, geen lasteraarsters, wakker, getrouw in alles. 12Dat de diakenen ener vrouwe mannen zijn, die hun kinderen en hun eigen huizen wel regeren. 13Want die wel gediend hebben, verkrijgen zichzelven een goeden opgang, en vele vrijmoedigheid in het geloof, hetwelk is in Christus Jezus. 14Deze dingen schrijf ik u, hopende zeer haast tot u te komen; 15Maar zo ik vertoef, opdat gij moogt weten, hoe men in het huis Gods moet verkeren, hetwelk is de Gemeente des levenden Gods, een pilaar en vastigheid der waarheid. 16En buiten allen twijfel, de verborgenheid der godzaligheid is groot: God is geopenbaard in het vlees, is gerechtvaardigd in den Geest, is gezien van de engelen, is gepredikt onder de heidenen, is geloofd in de wereld, is opgenomen in heerlijkheid.
