1Bấy giờ, có một người Bên-gia-min, tên là Kích, con trai A-bi-ên, cháu Xê-rô, chắt Bê-cô-rát, chít A-phi-ác, là con trai của một người Bên-ga-min. Kích vốn một người dõng sĩ, 2có một con trai, tên là Sau-lơ, còn trẻ và lịch sự. Trong dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chẳng ai lịch sự bằng người; người cao hơn cả dân sự từ vai trở lên. 3Một ngày kia, những lừa cái của Kích, cha Sau-lơ, bị lạc. Kích nói cùng Sau-lơ, con trai mình, rằng: Hãy đem theo một tôi tớ, đi tìm những lừa cái. 4Người đi khắp núi Ép-ra-im, khắp xứ Sa-li-sa, mà không tìm được; lại trải qua xứ Sa-lim, xứ Bên-gia-min, song cũng không gặp. 5Ðến trong xứ Xu-phơ, Sau-lơ nói cùng tôi tớ theo mình, rằng; Nầy chúng ta hãy trở về, kẻo cha ta đã đành mất lừa, lại lo cho chúng ta chăng. 6Kẻ tôi tớ đáp cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Hãy nghe, trong thành nầy có một người của Ðức Chúa Trời, là người rất tôn trọng; mọi sự người nói trước điều ứng nghiệm chẳng sai. Vậy, chúng ta hãy đi đến đó. Có lẽ người sẽ chỉ cho chúng ta con đường phải nương theo. 7Sau-lơ nói cùng kẻ tôi tớ mình, rằng: Phải, chúng ta hãy đi đó. Nhưng chúng ta phải lấy gì mà dâng cho người? Các bao chúng ta đều hết lương thực, và chúng ta chẳng còn một lễ vật nào để dâng cho người của Ðức Chúa Trời! Chúng ta còn chi? 8Kẻ tôi tớ tiếp rằng: Tôi có trong mình một phần tư siếc-lơ bạc; tôi sẽ dâng bạc đó cho người của Ðức Chúa Trời, rồi người sẽ chỉ đường cho chúng ta. 9(Thuở xưa, trong Y-sơ-ra-ên, hễ người ta đi cầu vấn Ðức Chúa Trời, thì thường nói rằng: Chúng ta hãy đi tìm người tiên kiến; vì người mà thiên hạ ngày nay gọi là tiên tri, ngày xưa gọi là người tiên kiến). 10Sau-lơ nói cùng kẻ tôi tớ rằng: Ngươi nói phải; chúng ta hãy đi. Hai người bèn đi đến thành người của Ðức Chúa Trời ở. 11Khi hai người đi lên đường dốc về thành, thì gặp những con gái trẻ đi ra múc mước, bèn hỏi rằng: Ðấng tiên kiến có đây chăng? 12Các con gái trẻ đáp rằng: Có, kìa người ở đằng trước mặt ông. Nhưng hãy đi mau, vì ngày nay người đến thành, bởi bá tánh có việc tế lễ tại nơi cao. 13Khi vào thành, hai ông chắc sẽ gặp người trước khi chưa lên nơi cao đặng dự lễ. Bá tánh không ăn trước khi người đến, vì người phải chúc phước cho của lễ; xong rồi, các người dự tiệc mới ăn. Vậy, hãy đi lên, nội ngày nay hai ông chắc sẽ gặp người. 14Hai người đi lên thành; khi vừa vào thành, bèn gặp Sa-mu-ên đi ra đặng lên nơi cao. 15Vả, ngày trước khi Sau-lơ đến, Ðức Giê-hô-va tỏ ra cho Sa-mu-ên, mà rằng: 16Ngày mai, tại giờ nầy, ta sẽ sai một người ở xứ Bên-gia-min đến cùng ngươi, ngươi sẽ xức dầu cho người làm vua của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ta. Người sẽ giải cứu dân ta khỏi tay dân Phi-li-tin; vì ta đã đoái xem dân ta, và tiếng của chúng đã thấu đến ta. 17Khi Sa-mu-ên thấy Sau-lơ, Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cùng người rằng: Kìa là người mà ta đã bảo ngươi; ấy người sẽ quản trị dân ta. 18Sau-lơ đến gần Sa-mu-ên tại cửa thành mà nói cùng người rằng: Xin ông hãy chỉ cho tôi nhà của đấng tiên kiến. 19Sa-mu-ên đáp cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Ta là đấng tiên kiến đây. Hãy đi trước ta lên nơi cao. Ngày nay hai ngươi sẽ ăn bữa cùng ta; đến mai ta sẽ tỏ cho ngươi mọi điều trong lòng ngươi, đoạn để ngươi đi. 20Còn những lừa cái mà ngươi đã mất ba ngày nay, chớ lo lắng về chúng nó; vì đã kiếm được rồi. Vả lại, mọi vật quí trọng hơn hết trong Y-sơ-ra-ên đã dành cho ai? Há chẳng phải cho ngươi và cho cả nhà của cha ngươi sao? 21Sau-lơ đáp: Tôi chỉ là một người Bên-gia-min, là một chi phái nhỏ hơn hết trong Y-sơ-ra-ên; nhà tôi lại hèn mọn hơn hết các nhà của chi phái Bên-gia-min. Nhân sao ông nói với tôi giọng như vậy. 22Sa-mu-ên dẫn Sau-lơ và kẻ tôi tớ người vào phòng, rồi mời ngồi chỗ thứ nhất trong các người dự tiệc, số chừng ba mươi người. 23Bấy giờ, Sa-mu-ên nói cùng đầu bếp rằng: Hãy bưng phần ta đã trao cho ngươi, và ta đã dặn để riêng ra. 24Ðầu bếp lấy chả vai và miếng bọc chung quanh, đem dọn cho Sau-lơ, Sa-mu-ên tiếp rằng: Kìa, miếng đã để dành cho ngươi trước ở mặt ngươi; hãy ăn đi, từ khi ta định mời dân sự, ta đã giữ nó lại về tiệc nầy. Vậy, trong ngày đó, Sau-lơ ăn bữa cùng Sa-mu-ên. 25Ðoạn, chúng đều xuống khỏi nơi cao, vào trong thành; còn Sa-mu-ên trò chuyện cùng Sau-lơ trên mái nhà. 26Qua ngày sau, hai người dậy sớm; khi hừng đông, Sa-mu-ên gọi Sau-lơ trên mái nhà mà nói rằng: Hãy đứng dậy, ta sẽ đưa ngươi đi. Sau-lơ đứng dậy, rồi Sa-mu-ên và Sau-lơ cả hai đồng đi ra. 27Khi đến đầu thành, Sa-mu-ên nói cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Hãy truyền cho kẻ tôi tớ đi trước chúng ta. Kẻ tôi tớ bèn đi trước. Người tiếp rằng: Bây giờ, hãy dừng lại để ta nói cho nguơi nghe lời của Ðức Chúa Trời.
1Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor. 2He had a son, whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a better person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. 3The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Take now one of the servants with you, and arise, go seek the donkeys.” 4He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them: then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they weren’t there: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn’t find them. 5When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, and let us return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys, and be anxious for us.” 6He said to him, “See now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says comes surely to pass. Now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go.” 7Then Saul said to his servant, “But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” 8The servant answered Saul again, and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.” 9(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said, “Come, and let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was before called a Seer.) 10Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was. 11As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?” 12They answered them, and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place. 13As soon as you have come into the city, you shall immediately find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you shall find him.” 14They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place. 15Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying, 16“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked on my people, because their cry has come to me.” 17When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! this same shall have authority over my people.” 18Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.” 19Samuel answered Saul, and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them; for they are found. For whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you, and for all your father’s house?” 21Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?” 22Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons. 23Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’” 24The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because for the appointed time has it been kept for you, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day. 25When they had come down from the high place into the city, he talked with Saul on the housetop. 26They arose early: and about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. 27As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant pass on before us” (and he passed on), “but stand still first, that I may cause you to hear the word of God.”

Want het brood is weg uit onze vaten, en wij hebben geen gaven, om den man Gods te brengen; wat hebben wij? 8En de jongen antwoordde Saul verder en zeide: Zie, er vindt zich in mijn hand het vierendeel eens zilveren sikkels; dat zal ik den man Gods geven, opdat hij ons onzen weg wijze. 9(Eertijds zeide een ieder aldus in Israel, als hij ging om God te vragen: Komt en laat ons gaan tot den ziener; want die heden een profeet genoemd wordt, die werd eertijds een ziener genoemd.) 10Toen zeide Saul tot zijn jongen: Uw woord is goed, kom, laat ons gaan. En zij gingen naar de stad, waar de man Gods was. 11Als zij opklommen door den opgang der stad, zo vonden zij maagden, die uitgingen om water te putten; en zij zeiden tot haar: Is de ziener hier? 12Toen antwoordden zij hun, en zeiden: Ziet, hij is voor uw aangezicht; haast u nu, want hij is heden in de stad gekomen, dewijl het volk heden een offerande heeft op de hoogte. 13Wanneer gijlieden in de stad komt, zo zult gij hem vinden, eer hij opgaat op de hoogte om te eten; want het volk zal niet eten, totdat hij komt, want hij zegent het offer, daarna eten de genodigden; daarom gaat nu op, want hem, als heden zult gij hem vinden. 14Alzo gingen zij op in de stad. Toen zij in het midden der stad kwamen, ziet, zo ging Samuel uit hun tegemoet, om op te gaan naar de hoogte. 15Want de HEERE had het voor Samuels oor geopenbaard, een dag eer Saul kwam, zeggende: 16Morgen omtrent dezen tijd zal Ik tot u zenden een man uit het land van Benjamin, dien zult gij ten voorganger zalven over Mijn volk Israel; en hij zal Mijn volk verlossen uit der Filistijnen hand, want Ik heb Mijn volk aangezien, dewijl deszelfs geroep tot Mij gekomen is. 17Toen Samuel Saul aanzag, zo antwoordde hem de HEERE: Zie, dit is de man, van welken Ik u gezegd heb: Deze zal over Mijn volk heersen. 18En Saul naderde tot Samuel in het midden der poort, en zeide: Wijs mij toch, waar is hier het huis des zieners? 19En Samuel antwoordde Saul en zeide: Ik ben de ziener; ga op voor mijn aangezicht op de hoogte, dat gijlieden heden met mij eet; zo zal ik u morgen vroeg laten gaan, en alles, wat in uw hart is, zal ik u te kennen geven. 20Want de ezelinnen aangaande, die gij heden den derden dag verloren hebt, zet uw hart daarop niet, want zij zijn gevonden; en wiens zal zijn al het gewenste, dat in Israel is? Is het niet van u, en van het ganse huis uws vaders? 21Toen antwoordde Saul, en zeide: Ben ik niet een zoon van Jemini, van de kleinsten der stammen van Israel? en mijn geslacht is het niet het kleinste van al de geslachten van den stam van Benjamin? Waarom spreekt gij mij dan aan met zulke woorden? 22Samuel dan nam Saul en zijn jongen, en hij bracht ze in de kamer; en hij gaf hun plaats aan het opperste der genodigden; die nu waren omtrent dertig man. 23Toen zeide Samuel tot den kok: Lang dat stuk, hetwelk Ik u gegeven heb, waarvan ik tot u zeide: Zet het bij u weg. 24De kok nu bracht een schouder op, met wat daaraan was, en zette het voor Saul; en hij zeide: Zie, dit is het overgeblevene; zet het voor u, eet, want het is ter bestemder tijd voor u bewaard, als ik zeide: Ik heb het volk genodigd. Alzo at Saul met Samuel op dien dag. 25Daarna gingen zij af van de hoogte in de stad; en hij sprak met Saul op het dak. 26En zij stonden vroeg op; en het geschiedde, omtrent den opgang des dageraads, zo riep Samuel Saul op het dak, zeggende: Sta op, en zij beiden gingen uit, hij en Samuel, naar buiten. 27Toen zij afgegaan waren aan het einde der stad, zo zeide Samuel tot Saul: Zeg den jongen, dat hij voor onze aangezichten heenga; toen ging hij heen; maar sta gij als nu stil, en ik zal u Gods woord doen horen.
