1Bấy giờ dân Phi-li-tin giao chiến cùng Y-sơ-ra-ên; người Y-sơ-ra-ên chạy trốn trước mặt dân Phi-li-tin, và nhiều người trong bọn bị vít chết, ngã xuống trên núi Ghinh-bô-a. 2Dân Phi-li-tin hăng rượt theo Sau-lơ cùng con trai người, giết Giô-na-than, A-bi-na-đáp, và Manh-ki-sua, là các con trai của Sau-lơ. 3Thế trận dữ dội cho Sau-lơ; những lính cầm cung bắn trúng người, làm cho trọng thương. 4Sau-lơ nói cùng kẻ vác binh khí mình rằng: Hãy rút gươm ngươi, đâm ta đi, kẻo những kẻ không chịu cắt bì kia đến đâm ta và sỉ nhục ta chăng. Nhưng kẻ vác binh khí người không dám làm, vì sợ hãi lắm. Sau-lơ bèn lấy gươm và sấn mình trên mũi nó. 5Khi kẻ vác binh khí của Sau-lơ thấy người chết, bèn cũng sấn mình trên mũi gươm mình mà chết với người. 6Như vậy, trong ngày đó, Sau-lơ, ba con trai người, kẻ vác binh khí người, và hết thảy kẻ theo người đều chết chung với nhau. 7Những người Y-sơ-ra-ên ở bên kia trũng và bên kia sông Giô-đanh, thấy đạo binh Y-sơ-ra-ên chạy trốn, Sau-lơ và ba con trai người đã chết, thì bỏ các thành mình mà trốn đi; nên nỗi dân Phi-li-tin đến ở đó. 8Ngày sau, dân Phi-li-tin đến lục soát những kẻ chết, thấy Sau-lơ và ba con trai người nằm sải trên núi Ghinh-bô-a. 9Chúng cắt đầu Sau-lơ, lột lấy binh khí người, và sai báo tin tốt nầy cho khắp xứ dân Phi-li-tin, trong các đền thờ của thần tượng họ và trong cả dân sự. 10Chúng để binh khí của Sau-lơ tại trong đền thờ Át-tạt-tê, và treo xác người vào tường thành Bết-san. 11Nhưng khi dân sự Gia-be ở Ga-la-át hay điều dân Phi-li-tin đã làm cho Sau-lơ, 12thì những người dõng sĩ trong bọn đứng dậy, đi trọn đêm, gỡ lấy xác của Sau-lơ và của con trai người khỏi tường thành Bết-san; rồi họ trở về Gia-be, thiêu các thây tại đó. 13lấy cốt của họ mà chôn dưới cây liễu xủ tơ, ở gần Gia-be, và kiêng ăn trong bảy ngày.
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines followed hard on Saul and on his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. 3The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers. 4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me!” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it. 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died with him. 6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, that same day together. 7When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them. 8On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9They cut off his head, and stripped off his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines all around, to carry the news to the house of their idols, and to the people. 10They put his armor in the house of the Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan. 11When the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard concerning him that which the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh, and burnt them there. 13They took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Maar zijn wapendrager wilde niet, want hij vreesde zeer. Toen nam Saul het zwaard, en viel daarin. 5Toen zijn wapendrager zag, dat Saul dood was, zo viel hij ook in zijn zwaard en stierf met hem. 6Alzo stierf Saul, en zijn drie zonen, en zijn wapendrager, ook al zijn mannen, te dienzelven dage te gelijk. 7Als de mannen van Israel, die aan deze zijde van het dal waren, en die aan deze zijde der Jordaan waren, zagen, dat de mannen van Israel gevloden waren, en dat Saul en zijn zonen dood waren, zo verlieten zij de steden, en zij vloden. Toen kwamen de Filistijnen en woonden daarin. 8Het geschiedde nu des anderen daags, als de Filistijnen kwamen, om de verslagenen te plunderen, zo vonden zij Saul en zijn drie zonen, liggende op het gebergte Gilboa. 9En zij hieuwen zijn hoofd af, en zij togen zijn wapenen uit, en zij zonden ze in der Filistijnen land rondom, om te boodschappen in het huis hunner afgoden, en onder het volk. 10En zij legden zijn wapenen in het huis van Astharoth; en zijn lichaam hechtten zij aan den muur te Beth-San. 11Als de inwoners van Jabes in Gilead daarvan hoorden, wat de Filistijnen Saul gedaan hadden; 12Zo maakten zich op alle strijdbare mannen, en gingen den gehelen nacht, en zij namen het lichaam van Saul, en de lichamen zijner zonen, van den muur te Beth-San; en zij kwamen te Jabes, en brandden ze aldaar. 13En zij namen hun beenderen, en begroeven ze onder het geboomte te Jabes; en zij vastten zeven dagen.
