1Dân Phi-li-tin nhóm hiệp các đạo binh mình đặng làm giặc, chúng nó hiệp tại Sô-cô, thuộc về xứ Giu-đa, và đóng trại tại Ê-phê-Ða-mim, giữa Sô-cô và A-xê-ca. 2Sau-lơ và người Y-sơ-ra-ên cũng nhóm hiệp, đóng trại tại trũng Ê-la, và dàn trận cùng dân Phi-li-tin. 3Dân Phi-li-tin đứng trên núi phía nầy, còn Y-sơ-ra-ên đứng trên núi phía kia; trũng phân cách họ. 4Bấy giờ, có một người lực sĩ từ trại quân Phi-li-tin mà ra, tên là Gô-li-át, quê ở Gát; bề cao người sáu thước một gang. 5Người đội mão đồng trên đầu, mặc áo giáp đồng vảy cá, nặng năm ngàn siếc-lơ, 6và những ủng đồng; sau lưng treo một cây lao đồng. 7Cán của cây lao hắn như cây trục của thợ dệt cửi, và mũi của cây lao nầy nặng sáu trăm siếc-lơ. Kẻ vác binh khí hắn đi trước hắn. 8Vậy, hắn ra đứng kêu la cùng đội ngũ Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Cớ sao các ngươi ra bày trận? Ta há chẳng phải là người Phi-li-tin, còn các ngươi, là tôi tớ của Sau-lơ sao? Hãy chọn một người trong các ngươi xuống đấu địch cùng ta. 9Nếu khi đấu địch cùng ta, hắn trổi hơn ta và giết ta, thì chúng ta sẽ làm tôi tớ các ngươi; nhưng nếu ta trổi hơn hắn và ta giết hắn, thì các ngươi sẽ làm tôi chúng ta, và hầu việc chúng ta. 10Người Phi-li-tin lại còn nói rằng: Phải, ngày nay ta thách lời nầy cho đội ngũ Y-sơ-ra-ên: Hãy khiến một người ra, đặng chúng ta đấu địch cùng nhau. 11Sau-lơ và cả Y-sơ-ra-ên nghe những lời của người Phi-li-tin, thì lấy làm hoảng hồn, sợ hãi lắm. 12Vả, Ða-vít, là con trai của Y-sai, người Ê-phơ-rát kia, quê ở Bết-lê-hem trong xứ Giu-đa, người có tám con trai; trong đời Sau-lơ, Y-sai đã cao tuổi rồi. 13Ba con trai của Y-sai đã theo Sau-lơ nơi chiến trận: tên ba con trai ấy là: con cả Ê-li-áp, con thứ nhì A-bi-đáp, và con thứ ba Sa-ma. 14Ða-vít là con út. Khi ba anh người đã theo Sau-lơ, 15thì Ða-vít lìa nơi Sau-lơ, trở về Bết-lê-hem đặng chăn chiên của cha mình. 16Người Phi-li-tin đi ra buổi mai và buổi chiều, tỏ mình ra như vậy trong bốn mươi ngày. 17Vả, Y-sai nói cùng Ða-vít, con trai mình, mà rằng: Con hãy lấy một ê-pha hột rang và mười ổ bánh nầy, chạy mau đến trại quân đặng đem đưa cho các anh con. 18Con cũng hãy đem mười bánh sữa nầy cho quan tướng cai ngàn quân, thử xem các anh con có mạnh chăng, và con phải đem về cho cha một dấu chi lam chứng về phần chúng nó. 19Các anh con ở cùng Sau-lơ và hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên tại trong trũng Ê-la, để đánh giặc cùng dân Phi-li-tin. 20Ngày mai sáng sớm, Ða-vít để chiên cho một người chăn, lấy đồ vật mà đi, như Y-sai đã dặn người. Khi người đã đến đồn, thì đạo binh đi ra đặng dàn trận và reo tiếng chiến tranh. 21Y-sơ-ra-ên và dân Phi-li-tin dàn trận, hai đạo quân đối nhau. 22Ða-vít cất gánh nặng mình giao cho người giữ đồ vật, đoạn chạy đến chỗ dàn trận, tới hỏi thăm ba anh mình mạnh giỏi chăng. 23Người đương nói chuyện cùng chúng, kìa người lực sĩ Gô-li-át, tức là người Phi-li-tin ở Gát, từ hàng ngũ Phi-li-tin xơm tới, và Ða-vít nghe hắn nói như những lời ngày trước. 24Hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên thấy người nầy, đều chạy trốn và run sợ lắm. Mọi người Y-sơ-ra-ên nói: 25Các ngươi có thấy người đó xơm tới chăng? Hắn đến đặng sỉ nhục Y-sơ-ra-ên. Nếu ai giết được hắn, thì vua sẽ ban thưởng nhiều của cải, gả con gái mình cho người đó, và miễn xâu thuế cho nhà cha người ấy trong Y-sơ-ra-ên. 26Ða-vít hỏi những người ở gần mình rằng: Người ta sẽ đãi thể nào cho kẻ giết được người Phi-li-tin nầy, và cất sự sỉ nhục khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên? Vì người Phi-li-tin nầy, kẻ chẳng chịu phép cắt bì nầy, là ai, mà lại dám sỉ nhục đạo binh của Ðức Chúa Trời hằng sống? 27Người ta lấy lời thường nói ấy mà đáp cùng người rằng: Ai giết được hắn thì phần thưởng sẽ là như vậy. 28Nhưng Ê-li-háp, anh cả người, nghe Ða-vít nói như vậy, nổi giận người mà nói rằng: Cớ sao mày đến đây? Mày bỏ ít con chiên của chúng ta trong đồng vắng cho ai? Tao biết tánh kiêu ngạo và sự độc ác của lòng mày. Ấy đặng xem tranh chiến nên mày mới đến. 29Ða-vít đáp rằng: Vậy, tôi có làm chi đâu? Ấy chỉ là một câu hỏi thôi? 30Người dan xa anh mình, lặp hỏi những người khác cũng một câu ấy, thì người ta đáp như lần thứ nhứt. 31Có người nghe các lời Ða-vít nói, bèn thuật lại cho Sau-lơ hay; Sau-lơ đòi người đến. 32Ða-vít thưa với Sau-lơ rằng: Xin chớ ai ngã lòng vì cớ người Phi-li-tin kia! Kẻ tôi tớ vua sẽ đi đấu địch cùng hắn. 33Sau-lơ đáp cùng Ða-vít rằng: Ngươi chẳng thế đi đấu địch cùng người Phi-li-tin kia, vì ngươi chỉ là một đứa con trẻ, còn hắn là một tay chiến sĩ từ thuở còn thơ. 34Ða-vít tâu cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Khi tôi tớ vua chăn chiên của cha mình, hễ có sư tử hay là con gấu đến tha một con chiên của bầy. 35thì tôi đuổi theo, đánh nó, rứt con chiên khỏi miệng nó; hễ nó cất lên cự tôi, tôi nắm râu nó, đánh và giết nó đi. 36Tôi tớ vua đã đánh chết con sư tử và con gấu, vậy thì người Phi-li-tin không chịu phép cắt bì kia cũng sẽ đồng số phận với chúng nó; vì hắn sỉ nhục các đạo binh của Ðức Chúa Trời hằng sống. 37Ða-vít lại nói: Ðức Giê-hô-va đã giải cứu tôi khỏi vấu sư tử và khỏi cẳng gấu, ắt sẽ giải cứu tôi khỏi tay người Phi-li-tin kia. Sau-lơ đáp rằng: Hãy đi, nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va ở cùng ngươi! 38Sau-lơ lấy áo chiến mình mặc cho Ða-vít, đội cái mão đồng lên đầu người, và mặc áo giáo cho người. 39Ða-vít đeo gươm của Sau-lơ ở trên áo chiến và tập đi thử, vì không có thói quen. Nhưng người nói cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Tôi không thế mang khí giới nầy mà đi được; vì tôi không có thói quen. Ða-vít bèn cổi áo ấy ra, 40cầm một cây gậy, lựa dưới khe năm cục đá bóng láng, để trong cái túi chăn chiên mình vẫn có, và cái trành ném đá ở nơi tay, rồi xơm tới người Phi-li-tin. 41Người Phi-li-tin cũng xơm tới, đến gần Ða-vít, có kẻ vác binh khí đi trước. 42Người Phi-li-tin xem Ða-vít, thấy người còn trẻ, nước da hồng hồng, mặt đẹp đẽ, thì khinh người. 43Người Phi-li-tin nói cùng Ða-vít rằng: Ta há là một con chó nên người cầm gậy đến cùng ta? Người Phi-li-tin bắt danh các thần mình mà rủa sả Ða-vít, 44và tiếp rằng: Hãy lại đây, ta sẽ ban thịt ngươi cho chim trời và thú đồng. 45Ða-vít đáp cùng người Phi-li-tin rằng: Ngươi cầm gươm, giáo, lao mà đến cùng ta; còn ta, ta nhơn danh Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn binh mà đến, tức là Ðức Chúa Trời của đạo binh Y-sơ-ra-ên, mà ngươi đã sỉ nhục. 46Ngày nay Ðức Giê-hô-va sẽ phó ngươi vào tay ta, ta sẽ giết ngươi, cắt đầu ngươi, và ngày nay ban thây của đạo binh Phi-li-tin cho chim trời và thú vật của đất. 47Khắp thế gian sẽ biết rằng Y-sơ-ra-ên có một Ðức Chúa Trời; và quân lính nầy sẽ thấy rằng Ðức Giê-hô-va không giải cứu bằng gươm, hoặc bằng giáo; vì Ðức Giê-hô-va là Chúa của chiến trận, và Ngài sẽ phó các ngươi vào tay chúng ta. 48Xảy khi người Phi-li-tin đứng dậy, xơm tới đón Ða-vít, Ða-vít vội vàng chạy về hướng hàng trận quân nghịch đặng đón người Phi-li-tin. 49Ða-vít thò tay vào túi mình, lấy một cục đá, ném nó bằng trành, trúng nơi trán người Phi-li-tin. Cục đá lọt thấu trong trán, Gô-li-át té úp mặt xuống đất. 50Như vậy Ða-vít thắng được người Phi-li-tin bằng cái trành nắm đá và cục đá, đánh chết hắn mà không có gươm nơi tay. 51Ðoạn, Ða-vít chạy lại, xông vào mình người Phi-li-tin, lấy gươm của hắn và rút ra khỏi vỏ, giết hắn, và cắt đầu đi. Dân Phi-li-tin thấy kẻ lực sĩ mình đã chết, thì chạy trốn. 52Bấy giờ, người Y-sơ-ra-ên và Giu-đa dấy lên, hò hét, đuổi theo dân Phi-li-tin cho đến cửa thành Gát và Éc-rôn; người Phi-li-tin bị thương ngã chết đầy đường Sa-ra-gim cho đến Gát và Éc-rôn. 53Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, sau khi đã rượt đuổi dân Phi-li-tin rồi, thì trở về cướp phá trại quân chúng nó. 54Ða-vít lấy thủ cấp của người Phi-li-tin đem đến Giê-ru-sa-lem; nhưng để binh khí Gô-li-át lại trong trại mình. 55Sau-lơ thấy Ða-vít đón đánh người Phi-li-tin, thì có hỏi quan tổng binh Áp-ne, rằng: Hỡi Áp-ne, người trai trẻ đó là con trai của ai? Áp-ne thưa rằng: Ôi vua! tôi xin chỉ linh hồn vua mà thề, tôi chẳng biết. 56Vua nói cùng người rằng: Hãy hỏi thăm gã trai trẻ ấy là con của ai. 57Khi Ða-vít đã giết người Phi-li-tin trở về, thì Áp-ne rước người, dẫn đến trước mặt Sau-lơ. Ða-vít đương xách thủ cấp của người Phi-li-tin nơi tay. 58Sau-lơ nói cùng người rằng: Hỡi gã trai trẻ, ngươi là con ai? Ða-vít thưa rằng: Tôi là con Y-sai, tôi tớ của vua, ở tại Bết-lê-hem.
1Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim. 2Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. 3The Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them. 4There went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5He had a helmet of brass on his head, and he was clad with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. 6He had brass shin armor on his legs, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders. 7The staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and his shield bearer went before him. 8He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. 9If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then you will be our servants, and serve us.” 10The Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day! Give me a man, that we may fight together!” 11When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. 12Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man was an old man in the days of Saul, stricken among men. 13The three eldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14David was the youngest; and the three eldest followed Saul. 15Now David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem. 16The Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days. 17Jesse said to David his son, “Now take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers; 18and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news.” 19Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. 20David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the place of the wagons, as the army which was going out to the fight shouted for the battle. 21Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army. 22David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers. 23As he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words: and David heard them. 24All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were terrified. 25The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. It shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.” 26David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 27The people answered him in this way, saying, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.” 28Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the naughtiness of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.” 29David said, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?” 30He turned away from him toward another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way. 31When the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him. 32David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” 33Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” 34David said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb out of the flock, 35I went out after him, and struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and struck him, and killed him. 36Your servant struck both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37David said, “Yahweh who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go; and Yahweh shall be with you.” 38Saul dressed David with his clothing. He put a helmet of brass on his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail. 39David strapped his sword on his clothing, and he tried to move; for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, “I can’t go with these; for I have not tested them.” David took them off. 40He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his wallet. His sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine. 41The Philistine came on and drew near to David; and the man who bore the shield went before him. 42When the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and withal of a fair face. 43The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” The Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky, and to the animals of the field.” 45Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin: but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you, and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky, and to the wild animals of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47and that all this assembly may know that Yahweh doesn’t save with sword and spear: for the battle is Yahweh’s, and he will give you into our hand.” 48When the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, David hurried, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49David put his hand in his bag, took a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51Then David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head therewith. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 52The men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until you come to Gai, and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron. 53The children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp. 54David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent. 55When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I can’t tell.” 56The king said, “Inquire whose son the young man is!” 57As David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, you young man?” David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

Kiest een man onder u, die tot mij afkome. 9Indien hij tegen mij strijden en mij verslaan kan, zo zullen wij ulieden tot knechten zijn; maar indien ik hem overwin en hem sla, zo zult gij ons tot knechten zijn, en ons dienen. 10Verder zeide de Filistijn: Ik heb heden de slagorden van Israel gehoond, zeggende: Geeft mij een man, dat wij te zamen strijden! 11Toen Saul en het ganse Israel deze woorden van den Filistijn hoorden, zo ontzetten zij zich, en vreesden zeer. 12David nu was de zoon van den Efrathischen man van Bethlehem-Juda, wiens naam was Isai, en die acht zonen had, en in de dagen van Saul was hij een man, oud, afgaande onder de mannen. 13En de drie grootste zonen van Isai gingen heen; zij volgden Saul na in den krijg. De namen nu zijner drie zonen, die in den krijg gingen, waren: Eliab, de eerstgeborene, en zijn tweede Abinadab, en de derde Samma. 14En David was de kleinste; en de drie grootsten waren Saul nagevolgd. 15Doch David ging henen, en kwam weder van Saul, om zijns vaders schapen te weiden te Bethlehem. 16De Filistijn nu trad toe, des morgens vroeg en des avonds. Alzo stelde hij zich daar veertig dagen lang. 17En Isai zeide tot zijn zoon David: Neem toch voor uw broeders een efa van dit geroost koren, en deze tien broden, en breng ze ter loops in het leger tot uw broederen. 18Maar breng deze tien melkkazen aan de oversten over duizend; en gij zult uw broederen bezoeken, of het hun welga, en gij zult van hen pand medenemen. 19Saul nu, en zij, en alle mannen van Israel waren bij het eikendal met de Filistijnen strijdende. 20Toen maakte zich David des morgens vroeg op, en hij liet de schapen bij den hoeder, en hij nam het op, en ging henen, gelijk als Isai hem bevolen had; en hij kwam aan den wagenburg, als het heir in slagorde uittoog, en men ten strijde riep. 21En de Israelieten en Filistijnen stelden slagorde tegen slagorde. 22David nu liet de vaten van zich, onder de hand van den bewaarder der vaten, en hij liep ter slagorde; en hij kwam en vraagde zijn broederen naar hun welstand. 23Toen hij met hen sprak, ziet, zo kwam der kampvechter op; zijn naam was Goliath, de Filistijn van Gath, uit het heir der Filistijnen, en hij sprak achtervolgens die woorden; en David hoorde ze. 24Doch alle mannen in Israel, als zij dien man zagen, zo vluchtten zij voor zijn aangezicht, en zij vreesden zeer. 25En de mannen Israels zeiden: Hebt gijlieden dien man wel gezien, die opgekomen is? Want hij is opgekomen, om Israel te honen; en het zal geschieden, dat de koning dien man, die hem slaat, met groten rijkdom verrijken zal, en hij zal hem zijn dochter geven, en hij zal zijns vaders huis vrijmaken in Israel. 26Toen zeide David tot de mannen, die bij hem stonden, zeggende: Wat zal men dien man doen, die dezen Filistijn slaat, en den smaad van Israel wendt? Want wie is deze onbesneden Filistijn, dat hij de slagorden van den levenden God zou honen? 27Wederom zeide hem het volk achtervolgens dat woord, zeggende: Alzo zal men den man doen, die hem slaat. 28Als Eliab, zijn grootste broeder, hem tot die mannen hoorde spreken, zo ontstak de toorn van Eliab tegen David, en hij zeide: Waarom zijt gij nu afgekomen, en onder wien hebt gij de weinige schapen in de woestijn gelaten? Ik ken uw vermetelheid, en de boosheid uws harten wel; want gij zijt afgekomen, opdat gij den strijd zaagt. 29Toen zeide David: Wat heb ik nu gedaan? Is er geen oorzaak? 30En hij wendde zich af van dien naar een anderen toe, en hij zeide achtervolgens dat woord; en het volk gaf hem weder antwoord, achtervolgens de eerste woorden. 31Toen die woorden gehoord werden, die David gesproken had, en in de tegenwoordigheid van Saul verkondigd werden, zo liet hij hem halen. 32En David zeide tot Saul: Aan geen mens ontvalle het hart, om zijnentwil. Uw knecht zal heengaan en hij zal met dezen Filistijn strijden. 33Maar Saul zeide tot David: Gij zult niet kunnen heengaan tot dezen Filistijn, om met hem te strijden; want gij zijt een jongeling, en hij is een krijgsman van zijn jeugd af. 34Toen zeide David tot Saul: Uw knecht weid de schapen zijns vaders, en er kwam een leeuw en een beer, en nam een schaap van de kudde weg. 35En ik ging uit hem na, en ik sloeg hem, en redde het uit zijn mond; toen hij tegen mij opstond, zo vatte ik hem bij zijn baard, en sloeg hem, en doodde hem. 36Uw knecht heeft zo den leeuw als den beer geslagen; alzo zal deze onbesneden Filistijn zijn, gelijk een van die, omdat hij de slagorden van den levenden God gehoond heeft. 37Verder zeide David: De HEERE, Die mij van de hand des leeuws gered heeft, en uit de hand des beers, Die zal mij redden uit de hand van dezen Filistijn. Toen zeide Saul tot David: Ga heen, en de HEERE zij met u! 38En Saul kleedde David met zijn klederen, en zette een koperen helm op zijn hoofd, en kleedde hem met een pantsier. 39En David gordde zijn zwaard aan over zijn klederen, en wilde gaan; want hij had het nooit verzocht. Toen zeide David tot Saul: Ik kan in deze niet gaan, want ik heb het nooit verzocht; en David legde ze van zich. 40En hij nam zijn staf in zijn hand, en hij koos zich vijf gladde stenen uit de beek, en legde ze in de herderstas, die hij had, te weten in den zak, en zijn slinger was in zijn hand; alzo naderde hij tot den Filistijn. 41De Filistijn ging ook heen, gaande en naderende tot David, en zijn schilddrager ging voor zijn aangezicht. 42Toen de Filistijn opzag, en David zag, zo verachtte hij hem; want hij was een jongeling, roodachtig, mitsgaders schoon van aanzien. 43De Filistijn nu zeide tot David: Ben ik een hond, dat gij tot mij komt met stokken? En de Filistijn vloekte David bij zijn goden. 44Daarna zeide de Filistijn tot David: Kom tot mij, zo zal ik uw vlees aan de vogelen des hemels geven, en aan de dieren des velds. 45David daarentegen zeide tot den Filistijn: Gij komt tot mij met een zwaard, en met een spies, en met een schild; maar ik kom tot u in den Naam van den HEERE der heirscharen, den God der slagorden van Israel, Dien gij gehoond hebt. 46Te dezen dage zal de HEERE u besluiten in mijn hand, en ik zal u slaan, en ik zal uw hoofd van u wegnemen, en ik zal de dode lichamen van der Filistijnen leger dezen dag aan de vogelen des hemels, en aan de beesten des velds geven; en de ganse aarde zal weten, dat Israel een God heeft. 47En deze ganse vergadering zal weten, dat de HEERE niet door het zwaard, noch door de spies verlost; want de krijg is des HEEREN, Die zal ulieden in onze hand geven. 48En het geschiedde, toen de Filistijn zich opmaakte, en heenging, en David tegemoet naderde, zo haastte David, en liep naar de slagorde toe, den Filistijn tegemoet. 49En David stak zijn hand in de tas, en hij nam een steen daaruit, en hij slingerde, en trof den Filistijn in zijn voorhoofd; zodat de steen zonk in zijn voorhoofd, en hij viel op zijn aangezicht ter aarde. 50Alzo overweldigde David den Filistijn met een slinger en met een steen; en hij versloeg den Filistijn, en doodde hem; doch David had geen zwaard in de hand. 51Daarom liep David, en stond op den Filistijn, en nam zijn zwaard, en hij trok het uit zijn schede, en hij doodde hem, en hij hieuw hem het hoofd daarmede af. Toen de Filistijnen zagen, dat hun geweldigste dood was, zo vluchtten zij. 52Toen maakten zich de mannen van Israel en van Juda op, en juichten, en vervolgden de Filistijnen, tot daar men komt aan de vallei, en tot aan de poorten van Ekron; en de verwonden der Filistijnen vielen op den weg van Saaraim, en tot aan Gath, en tot aan Ekron. 53Daarna keerden de kinderen Israels om, van het hittig najagen der Filistijnen, en zij beroofden hun legers. 54Daarna nam David het hoofd van den Filistijn, en bracht het naar Jeruzalem; maar zijn wapenen legde hij in zijn tent. 55Toen Saul David zag uitgaan den Filistijn tegemoet, zeide hij tot Abner, den krijgsoverste: Wiens zoon is deze jongeling, Abner? En Abner zeide: Zo waarachtig als uw ziel leeft, o koning! ik weet het niet. 56De koning nu zeide: Vraag gij het, wiens zoon deze jongeling is. 57Als David wederkeerde van het slaan des Filistijns, zo nam hem Abner, en hij bracht hem voor het aangezicht van Saul, en het hoofd van den Filistijn was in zijn hand. 58En Saul zeide tot hem: Wiens zoon zijt gij, jongeling? En David zeide: Ik ben een zoon van uw knecht Isai, den Bethlehemiet.
