1Vả, dân Phi-li-tin tranh chiến với Y-sơ-ra-ên. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chạy trốn khỏi trước mặt dân Phi-li-tin, có nhiều người bị thương chết trên núi Ghinh-bô-a. 2Dân Phi-li-tin đuổi theo kịp Sau-lơ và các con trai người, đánh giết các con trai ấy, là Giô-na-than, A-bi-na-đáp, và Manh-ki-sua. 3Cơn giặc rất kịch liệt, làm cho Sau-lơ thiệt cực khổ; khi lính cầm cung kịp đến người bèn bắn người bị thương. 4Sau-lơ bảo kẻ vác binh khí hầu mình rằng: Ngươi hãy tuốt gươm của ngươi và đâm giết ta, kẻo kẻ chẳng chịu cắt bì kia đến sản nghiệp ta. Song kẻ vác binh khí người không khứng vâng mạng, vì lấy làm sợ hãi. Sau-lơ bèn cầm lấy gươm mình cúi thúc vào ngực. 5Khi kẻ vác binh khí thấy Sau-lơ chết rồi, thì cũng lấy gươm cúi thúc vào ngực mình luôn. 6Vậy, Sau-lơ, ba con trai người, và cả nhà người đều đồng nhau chết. 7Khi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ở trong đồng bằng thấy đạo binh chạy trốn, Sau-lơ cùng các con trai người đã chết rồi, thì bỏ thành mình mà trốn đi; dân Phi-li-tin đến ở trong các thành ấy. 8Ngày hôm sau, dân Phi-li-tin đến bóc lột những kẻ tử trận, thấy Sau-lơ và các con trai người ngã chết trên núi Ghinh-bô-a. 9Chúng bóc lột thây Sau-lơ, chém đầu người, cất lấy binh khí người, rồi sai kẻ đi khắp xứ Phi-li-tin, để báo tin cho các thần tượng và dân sự. 10Chúng để binh khí của người tại trong miễu các thần của chúng nó, còn đầu người thì đóng đinh treo trong chùa Ða-gôn. 11Khi dân cư Gia-be ở Ga-la-át nghe những điều dân Phi-li-tin đã làm cho Sau-lơ, 12thì những người mạnh dạn đều cảm động đi lên cướp lấy xác vua Sau-lơ và xác các con trai người, đem về Gia-be, chôn hài cốt của họ dưới cây thông tại Gia-be, đoạn kiêng ăn bảy ngày. 13Ấy vậy, vua Sau-lơ chết, vì tội lỗi mình đã phạm cùng Ðức Giê-hô-va, và vì chẳng có vâng theo mạng lịnh của Ngài; lại vì đã cầu hỏi bà bóng, 14chẳng có cầu hỏi Ðức Giê-hô-va; vậy, vì cớ ấy Ngài giết người, dời nước người cho về Ða-vít, con trai Y-sai.
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. 3The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was distressed by reason of the archers. 4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me.” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it. 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died. 6So Saul died, and his three sons; and all his house died together. 7When all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them. 8On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9They stripped him, and took his head, and his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines all around, to carry the news to their idols, and to the people. 10They put his armor in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon. 11When all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all the valiant men arose, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days. 13So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Yahweh, because of Yahweh’s word, which he didn’t keep; and also because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit, to inquire, 14and didn’t inquire of Yahweh: therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.

Maar zijn wapendrager wilde niet, want hij vreesde zeer. Toen nam Saul het zwaard, en viel daarin. 5Toen zijn wapendrager zag, dat Saul dood was, zo viel hij ook in het zwaard en stierf. 6Alzo stierf Saul en zijn drie zonen; ook zijn ganse huis is tegelijk gestorven. 7Als al de mannen van Israel, die in het dal waren, zagen, dat zij gevloden waren, en dat Saul en zijn zonen dood waren, zo verlieten zij hun steden, en zij vloden. Toen kwamen de Filistijnen en woonden daarin. 8Het geschiedde nu des anderen daags, als de Filistijnen kwamen om de verslagenen te plunderen, zo vonden zij Saul en zijn zonen, liggende op het gebergte Gilboa. 9En zij plunderden hem, en zij namen zijn hoofd en zijn wapenen, en zij zonden ze in der Filistijnen land rondom, om dit te boodschappen aan hun afgoden, en aan het volk. 10En zij legden zijn wapenen in het huis huns gods; en zijn hoofd hechtten zij in het huis van Dagon. 11Als geheel Jabes in Gilead hoorde alles, wat de Filistijnen Saul gedaan hadden, 12Zo maakten zich alle strijdbare mannen op, en zij namen het lichaam van Saul, en de lichamen zijner zonen, en zij brachten ze te Jabes; en zij begroeven hun beenderen onder een eikenboom te Jabes, en zij vastten zeven dagen. 13Alzo stierf Saul, in zijn overtreding, waarmede hij overtreden had tegen den HEERE, tegen het woord des HEEREN hetwelk hij niet gehouden had; en ook omdat hij de waarzegster gevraagd had, haar zoekende, 14En den HEERE niet gezocht had; daarom doodde Hij hem, en keerde het koninkrijk tot David, den zoon van Isai.
