1E aconteceu que, quando o rei Ezequias ouviu isso ,ele rasgou suas roupas, cobriu-se de saco, e entrou na casa do SENHOR. 2Então ele enviou Eliaquim o administrador da casa real, Sebna o escriba, e os anciãos dos sacerdotes, cobertos de sacos, ao profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz. 3E lhe disseram: Assim diz Ezequias: Este dia é um dia de angústia, de repreensão, e de blasfêmia; pois os filhos chegaram ao parto, porém não há força para que possam nascer. 4Talvez o SENHOR venha a ouvir as palavras de Rabsaqué, a quem seu senhor, o rei da Assíria, enviou, para afrontar ao Deus vivente; e repreenda as palavras que o SENHOR teu Deus tem ouvido. Faze, pois, oração pelos restantes, que ainda se encontram. 5E os servos do rei vieram até Isaías, 6E Isaías lhes disse: Assim direis a vosso senhor: Assim diz o SENHOR: Não temas das palavras que ouviste, com as quais os servos do rei da Assíria me blasfemaram. 7Eis que porei nele um espírito de tal maneira que, quando ouvir um rumor, ele voltará à sua terra; e eu o derrubarei pela espada em sua própria terra. 8Então Rabsaqué voltou, e achou ao rei da Assíria lutando contra Libna, pois tinha ouvido que ele já tinha saído de Laquis. 9E ele, ao ouvir dizer que Tiraca, rei de Cuxe, tinha saído para fazer guerra contra ele, então, após ouvir, enviou mensageiros a Ezequias, dizendo: 10Assim falareis a Ezequias, rei de Judá, dizendo: Que teu Deus, em quem confias, não te engane, dizendo: Jerusalém não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria. 11Eis que tens ouvido o que os reis da Assíria fizeram a todas as terras, destruindo-as por completo. E tu, escaparias? 12Por acaso as livraram os deuses das nações as quais meus pais destruíram, tal como Gozã, Harã e Rezefe, e os filhos de Éden que estavam em Telassar? 13Onde está o rei da Hamate, o rei de Arpade, o rei de Sefarvaim, ou Hena e Iva? 14E Ezequias, recebendo as cartas das mãos dos mensageiros, e tendo as lido, subiu à casa do SENHOR, e Ezequias as estendeu perante o SENHOR. 15Então Ezequias orou ao SENHOR, dizendo: 16Ó SENHOR dos exércitos, Deus de Israel, que habitas entre os querubins; tu, só tu, és Deus de todos os reinos da terra; tu fizeste os céus e a terra. 17Inclina teu ouvido, ó SENHOR, e ouve; abre os teus olhos, SENHOR, e olha; e ouve todas as palavras de Senaqueribe que ele enviou para afrontar o Deus vivente. 18É verdade, SENHOR, que os reis da Assíria assolaram a todas as terras e seus territórios, 19E lançaram seus deuses ao fogo, porque não eram deuses, mas sim obras de mãos humanas, madeira e pedra; por isso os destruíram. 20Agora, SENHOR nosso Deus, livra-nos das mãos dele, e assim todos os reinos da terra saberão que tu, só tu, és o SENHOR. 21Então Isaías, filho de Amós, mandou dizer a Ezequias: Assim diz o SENHOR, Deus de Israel: Quanto ao que me pediste sobre Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, 22Esta é a palavra que o SENHOR falou sobre ele: A virgem, a filha de Sião, te despreza, zomba de ti; a filha de Jerusalém balança a cabeça após ti. 23A quem afrontaste? De quem blasfemaste? E contra quem levantaste a voz, e levantaste aos olhos arrogantemente? Contra o Santo de Israel! 24Por meio de teus servos afrontaste ao Senhor, e disseste: Com a minha multidão de carruagens eu subi aos cumes dos montes, aos lugares remotos do Líbano; e cortarei seus altos cedros, e seus melhores ciprestes, e virei a seu extremo cume, ao bosque de seu campo fértil. 25Eu cavei, e bebi as águas; e com as plantas dos meus pés secarei todos os rios do Egito. 26Por acaso não ouviste que desde muito antes eu fiz isto, e deste os dias antigos o tinha planejado? Agora eu fiz isto acontecer, para que tu fosses o que destruirias as cidades fortificadas, reduzindo-as a amontoados de ruínas. 27Por isso os moradores delas, com as mãos impotentes, ficaram atemorizados e envergonhados; eram como a erva do campo, e a grama verde, o capim dos telhados e o trigo queimado antes de crescer. 28Porém eu sei o teu sentar, o teu sair, o teu entrar, e o teu furor contra mim. 29Por causa de teu furor contra mim, e teu tumulto que subiu aos meus ouvidos, por isso porei meu anzol em teu nariz, e meu freio em tua boca; e te farei voltar pelo caminho em que vieste. 30E isto será por sinal para ti, Ezequias : este ano se comerá daquilo que nascer de si mesmo, e no segundo ano do que daí proceder; porém no terceiro ano semeai e colhei; e plantai vinhas, e comei seus frutos. 31Pois os sobreviventes da casa de Judá, o remanescente, voltará a formar raízes abaixo, e dará fruto acima. 32Porque de Jerusalém sairá o remanescente, e do monte de Sião os que sobreviverem; o zelo do SENHOR dos exércitos fará isto. 33Portanto assim diz o SENHOR quanto ao rei da Assíria: Ele não entrará nesta cidade, nem lançará flecha nela; nem também virá diante dela com escudo, nem levantará cerco contra ela. 34Pelo mesmo caminho que veio, nele voltará; mas nesta cidade ele não entrará, diz o SENHOR; 35Porque eu defenderei esta cidade para a livrar, por causa de mim e por causa do meu servo Davi. 36Então o anjo do SENHOR saiu, e feriu no acampamento dos assírios cento e oitenta mil deles ; e levantando-se pela manhã cedo, eis que todos eram cadáveres. 37Assim Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, partiu-se, e foi embora, voltou, e ficou em Nínive. 38E sucedeu que, enquanto ele estava prostrado na casa de seu deus Nisroque, seus filhos Adrameleque e Sarezer o feriram a espada; então eles escaparam para a terra de Ararate; e Esar-Hadom, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar.
1When king Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Yahweh’s house. 2He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. 3They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the birth, and there is no strength to give birth. 4It may be Yahweh your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’” 5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Behold, I will put a spirit in him and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”’” 8So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9He heard news concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “He has come out to fight against you.” When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10“Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, “Jerusalem won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Shall you be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar? 13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?’” 14Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to Yahweh’s house, and spread it before Yahweh. 15Hezekiah prayed to Yahweh, saying, 16“Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, who is enthroned among the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 17Turn your ear, Yahweh, and hear. Open your eyes, Yahweh, and behold. Hear all of the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to defy the living God. 18Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have destroyed all the countries and their land, 19and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. 20Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only.” 21Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22this is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him. The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. 23Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel. 24By your servants, have you defied the Lord, and have said, “With the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon. I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice fir trees. I will enter into its farthest height, the forest of its fruitful field. 25I have dug and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt.” 26Have you not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it in ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to destroy fortified cities, turning them into ruinous heaps. 27Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like a field before its crop has grown. 28But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me. 29Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came. 30This shall be the sign to you. You will eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from the same; and in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31The remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. 32For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and survivors will escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.’ 33Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither will he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. 34By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come to this city,’ says Yahweh. 35‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.’” 36Yahweh’s angel went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 37So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went away, returned to Nineveh, and stayed there. 38As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.

Gij Zelf, Gij alleen zijt de God van alle koninkrijken der aarde; Gij hebt den hemel en de aarde gemaakt! 17O HEERE! neig Uw oor en hoor, HEERE! doe Uw ogen open, en zie; en hoor al de woorden van Sanherib, die gezonden heeft om den levenden God te honen. 18Waarlijk, HEERE! hebben de koningen van Assyrie al de landen, mitsgaders derzelver landerijen verwoest; 19En hebben hun goden in het vuur geworpen; want zij waren geen goden, maar het werk van mensenhanden, hout en steen; daarom hebben zij die verdorven. 20Nu dan, HEERE, onze God, verlos ons uit zijn hand, zo zullen alle koninkrijken der aarde weten, dat Gij alleen de HEERE zijt. 21Toen zond Jesaja, de zoon van Amoz, tot Hizkia, om te zeggen: Alzo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Dat gij tot Mij gebeden hebt tegen Sanherib, den koning van Assyrie, heb Ik gehoord. 22Dit is het woord, dat de HEERE over hem gesproken heeft: De jonkvrouw, de dochter van Sion, veracht u, zij bespot u, de dochter van Jeruzalem schudt het hoofd achter u. 23Wien hebt gij gehoond, en gij gelasterd, en tegen Wien hebt gij de stem verheven, en uw ogen omhoog opgeheven? Tegen den Heilige Israels! 24Door middel uwer dienstknechten hebt gij den HEERE gehoond, en gezegd: Ik heb met de menigte mijner wagenen beklommen de hoogte der bergen, de zijden van Libanon; en ik zal zijn hoge cederbomen en zijn uitgelezen dennebomen afhouwen; en zal komen tot zijn uiterste hoogte, in het woud zijns schonen velds. 25Ik heb gegraven en de wateren gedronken; en ik heb met mijn voetzolen alle rivieren der belegerde plaatsen verdroogd. 26Hebt gij niet gehoord, dat Ik zulks lang te voren gedaan heb, en dat van de oude dagen af geformeerd heb? Nu heb Ik dat doen komen, dat gij zoudt zijn, om de vaste steden te verstoren tot woeste hopen. 27Daarom waren haar inwoners handeloos, zij waren verslagen en beschaamd; zij waren als het gras des velds en de groene grasscheutjes, als het hooi der daken, en het brandkoren, eer het overeind staat. 28Maar Ik weet uw zitten, en uw uitgaan, en uw inkomen, en uw woeden tegen Mij. 29Om uw woeden tegen Mij, en dat uw woeling voor Mijn oren opgekomen is, zo zal Ik Mijn haak in uw neus leggen, en Mijn gebit in uw lippen, en Ik zal u doen wederkeren door dien weg, door denwelken gij gekomen zijt. 30En dat zij u een teken, dat men in dit jaar, wat van zelf gewassen is, eten zal, en in het tweede jaar, wat daarvan weder uitspruit; maar zaait in het derde jaar, en maait, en plant wijngaarden, en eet hun vruchten. 31Want het ontkomene, dat overgebleven is van het huis van Juda, zal wederom nederwaarts wortelen, en het zal opwaarts vrucht dragen. 32Want van Jeruzalem zal het overblijfsel uitgaan, en het ontkomene van den berg Sion; de ijver des HEEREN der heirscharen zal dit doen. 33Daarom, zo zegt de HEERE van den koning van Assyrie: Hij zal in deze stad niet komen, noch daar een pijl inschieten; ook zal hij met geen schild daarvoor komen, en zal geen wal daartegen opwerpen. 34Door den weg, dien hij gekomen is, door dien zal hij wederkeren; maar in deze stad zal hij niet komen, zegt de HEERE. 35Want Ik zal deze stad beschermen, om die te verlossen, om Mijnentwil, en om Davids, Mijns knechts wil. 36Toen voer de engel des HEEREN uit, en sloeg in het leger van Assyrie honderd vijf en tachtig duizend. En toen zij zich des morgens vroeg opmaakten, ziet, die allen waren dode lichamen. 37Zo vertrok Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie, en toog henen, en keerde weder; en hij bleef te Nineve. 38Het geschiedde nu, als hij in het huis van Nisroch, zijn god, zich nederboog, dat Adramelech en Sarezer, zijn zonen, hem met het zwaard versloegen; doch zij ontkwamen in het land van Ararat; en Esar-Haddon, zijn zoon, werd koning in zijn plaats.
