1E aconteceu no décimo quarto ano do rei Ezequias, que Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, subiu contra todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá, e as tomou. 2Então o rei da Assíria enviou a Rabsaqué, de Laquis a Jerusalém, ao rei Ezequias, com um grande exército; e ele parou junto ao duto do tanque superior, junto ao caminho do campo do lavandeiro. 3Então saíram ao encontro dele Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o administrador da casa real; Sebna, o escriba, e Joá, filho de Asafe, o cronista. 4E Rabsaqué lhes disse: Dizei, pois, a Ezequias: Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: Que confiança é essa, em que confias? 5Eu, de fato, digo, que teus conselhos e poder de guerra são apenas palavras vazias. Em quem, pois, confias, para te rebelares contra mim? 6Eis que confias no Egito, aquele bastão de cana quebrada, em quem se alguém se apoiar, entrará pela mão e a perfurará; assim é Faraó, rei do Egito, para com todos os que nele confiam. 7Porém, se me disseres: Confiamos no SENHOR, nosso Deus; Por acaso não é este aquele cujos altos e cujos altares Ezequias tirou, e disse a Judá e a Jerusalém: Perante este altar adorareis? 8Agora, pois, submeta-te à proposta do meu senhor, o rei da Assíria; e eu te darei dois mil cavalos, se tu podes dar dois mil cavaleiros para eles. 9Como, pois, te oporias a um chefe dentre os menores servos do meu senhor, apenas confiando nas carruagens e cavaleiros do Egito? 10Ora, subi eu sem o SENHOR contra esta terra, para destruí-la? O próprio SENHOR me disse: Sobe contra esta terra, e destrói-a. 11Então Eliaquim, Sebna e Joá disseram a Rabsaqué: Pedimos que fale a teus servos em aramaico, porque nós o entendemos; e não nos fale na língua judaica, aos ouvidos do povo, que está sobre o muro. 12Porém Rabsaqué disse: Por acaso meu senhor me mandou falar estas palavras só a teu senhor e a ti, e não também aos homens que estão sentados sobre o muro, que juntamente convosco comerão suas próprias fezes, e beberão sua própria urina? 13Então Rabsaqué se pôs de pé, clamou em alta voz na língua judaica, e disse: Ouvi as palavras do grande rei, o rei da Assíria! 14Assim diz o rei: Que Ezequias não vos engane, pois ele não poderá vos livrar. 15Nem deixeis que Ezequias vos faça confiar no SENHOR, dizendo: Com certeza o SENHOR nos livrará; esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria. 16Não escuteis a Ezequias; porque assim diz o rei da Assíria: fazei as pazes comigo, e saí até mim; e cada um com de sua vide, e de sua figueira, e cada um beba a água de sua própria cisterna; 17Até que eu venha, e vos leve a uma terra como a vossa, terra de trigo e de suco de uva, terra de pão e de vinhas. 18Que Ezequias não vos engane, dizendo: O SENHOR nos livrará; por acaso os deuses das nações livraram cada um sua terra das mãos do rei da Assíria? 19Onde estão os deuses de Hamate e de Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim? Por acaso eles livraram a Samaria das minhas mãos? 20Quem são dentre todos os deuses destas terras, que livraram sua terra das minhas mãos? Como, pois, o SENHOR livrará a Jerusalém das minhas mãos? 21Porém eles ficaram calados, e nenhuma palavra lhe responderam; porque tinham ordem do rei, dizendo: Não lhe respondereis. 22Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o administrador da casa real, e Sebna, o escriba, e Joá filho de Asafe, o cronista, vieram a Ezequias com as roupas rasgadas, e lhe contaram as palavras de Rabsaqué.
1Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them. 2The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway. 3Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder came out to him. 4Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence is this in which you trust? 5I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me? 6Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 7But if you tell me, ‘We trust in Yahweh our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar?’” 8Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 9How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10Have I come up now without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’” 11Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and don’t speak to us in the Jews’ language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” 12But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?” 13Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14Thus says the king, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you. 15Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, “Yahweh will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’ 16Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; 17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “Yahweh will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 20Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” 21But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.” 22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
1En het geschiedde in het veertiende jaar van den koning Hizkia, dat Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie, optoog tegen alle vaste steden van Juda, en nam ze in. 2En de koning van Assyrie zond Rabsake van Lachis naar Jeruzalem tot den koning Hizkia, met een zwaar heir; en hij stond aan den watergang des oppersten vijvers, aan den hogen weg van het veld des vollers. 3Toen ging tot hem uit Eljakim, de zoon van Hilkia, de hofmeester, en Sebna, de schrijver, en Joah, de zoon van Asaf, de kanselier. 4En Rabsake zeide tot hen: Zegt nu tot Hizkia: Zo zegt de grote koning, de koning van Assyrie: Wat vertrouwen is dit, waarmede gij vertrouwt; 5Ik mocht zeggen (doch het is een woord der lippen): Er is raad en macht tot den oorlog; op wien vertrouwt gij nu, dat gij tegen mij rebelleert? 6Zie, gij vertrouwt op dien gebrokenen rietstaf, op Egypte; op denwelken zo iemand leunt, zo zal hij in zijn hand gaan en die doorboren; alzo is Farao, de koning van Egypte, al dengenen, die op hem vertrouwen. 7Maar zo gij tot mij zegt: Wij vertrouwen op den HEERE, onzen God; is Hij Die niet, Wiens hoogten en Wiens altaren Hizkia weggenomen heeft, en Die tot Juda en tot Jeruzalem gezegd heeft: Voor dit altaar zult gij u nederbuigen? 8Nu dan, wed toch met mijn heer, den koning van Assyrie; en ik zal u twee duizend paarden geven, zo gij voor u de ruiters daarop zult kunnen geven. 9Hoe zoudt gij dan het aangezicht van een enigen vorst, van de geringste knechten mijns heren, afkeren? Maar gij vertrouwt op Egypte, om de wagenen en om de ruiteren. 10En nu ben ik zonder den HEERE opgetogen tegen dit land, om dat te verderven. De HEERE heeft tot mij gezegd: Trek op tegen dat land, en verderf het. 11Toen zeide Eljakim, en Sebna, en Joah tot Rabsake: Spreek toch tot uw knechten in het Syrisch, want wij verstaan het wel; en spreek niet met ons in het Joods, voor de oren des volks, dat op den muur is. 12Maar Rabsake zeide: Heeft mijn heer mij tot uw heer en tot u gezonden, om deze woorden te spreken? Is het niet tot de mannen, die op den muur zitten, dat zij met ulieden hun drek eten, en hun water drinken zullen? 13Alzo stond Rabsake, en riep met luider stem in het Joods, en zeide: Hoort de woorden des groten konings, des konings van Assyrie! 14Alzo zegt de koning: Dat Hizkia u niet bedriege, want hij zal u niet kunnen redden. 15Daartoe, dat Hizkia u niet doe vertrouwen op den HEERE, zeggende: De HEERE zal ons zekerlijk redden; deze stad zal niet in de hand des konings van Assyrie gegeven worden. 16Hoort naar Hizkia niet; want alzo zegt de koning van Assyrie: Handelt met mij door een geschenk, en komt tot mij uit, en eet, een ieder van zijn wijnstok, en een ieder van zijn vijgeboom, en drinkt een ieder het water zijns bornputs; 17Totdat ik kom en u haal in een land, als ulieder land is, een land van koren en van most, een land van brood en van wijngaarden. 18Dat Hizkia ulieden niet verleide, zeggende: De HEERE zal ons redden; hebben de goden der volken, een ieder zijn land, gered uit de hand des konings van Assyrie? 19Waar zijn de goden van Hamath en Arpad? Waar zijn de goden van Sefarvaim? Hebben zij ook Samaria van mijn hand gered? 20Welke zijn ze onder al de goden dezer landen, die hun land uit mijn hand gered hebben, dat de HEERE Jeruzalem uit mijn hand zou redden? 21Doch zij zwegen stil, en antwoordden hem niet een woord; want het gebod des konings was, zeggende: Gij zult hem niet antwoorden. 22Toen kwam Eljakim, de zoon van Hilkia, de hofmeester, en Sebna, de schrijver, en Joah, de zoon van Asaf, de kanselier, tot Hizkia met gescheurde klederen; en zij gaven hem de woorden van Rabsake te kennen.
