1Ora, irmãos, eu não quero que ignoreis que todos os nossos pais estiveram debaixo da nuvem, e todos pelo mar passaram; 2E todos foram batizados na nuvem e no mar em Moisés; 3E todos comeram de um mesmo alimento espiritual; 4E todos beberam de uma mesma bebida espiritual; porque bebiam da pedra espiritual que os seguia; e a pedra era Cristo. 5Mas da maioria deles Deus não se agradou; por isso foram deixados no deserto. 6E estas coisas nos servem de exemplos, para que não desejemos coisas ruins, como eles desejaram. 7E não sejais idólatras, como alguns deles foram ,como está escrito: O povo se sentou para comer, e para beber, e levantaram-se para se alegrarem. 8E não pequemos sexualmente, como alguns deles assim pecaram, e em um dia vinte e três mil caíram. 9E não tentemos a Cristo, como também alguns deles tentaram, e pereceram pelas serpentes. 10E não murmureis, como também alguns deles murmuraram, e pereceram pelo destruidor. 11E todas estas coisas lhes aconteceram como exemplos, e estão escritas para nosso aviso, em quem os fins dos tempos têm chegado. 12Portanto, aquele que pensa estar de pé, olhe para que não caia. 13Nenhuma tentação vos veio, que não fosse humana; porém Deus é fiel; que não vos deixará tentar mais do que o que podeis, antes com a tentação também dará a saída, para que a possais suportar. 14Portanto, meus amados, fugi da idolatria. 15Eu vos falo como que para prudentes; jugai vós mesmos o que eu digo. 16Por acaso o copo da bênção, que nós bendizemos, não é a comunhão do sangue de Cristo? O pão que partimos, não é a comunhão do corpo de Cristo? 17Porque assim como há um só pão, nós muitos somos um só corpo; porque todos participamos de um só pão. 18Vede a Israel segundo a carne: por acaso os que comem os sacrifícios não são participantes do altar? 19Então o que eu digo? Que o ídolo é alguma coisa? Ou que o sacrifício ao ídolo seja alguma coisa? 20Mas eu digo, que as coisas que os gentios sacrificam, são sacrificadas para os demônios, e não a Deus. E não quero que sejais participantes dos demônios. 21Não podeis beber o copo do Senhor e o copo dos demônios; não podeis ser participantes da mesa do Senhor e da mesa dos demônios. 22Tentamos provocar ciúmes ao Senhor? Somos nós mais fortes que ele? 23Todas as coisas me são lícitas, mas nem todas as coisas convêm; todas as coisas me são licitas, mas nem todas as coisas edificam. 24Ninguém busque para si próprio, antes cada um busque o bem do outro. 25De tudo o que se vende no açougue, comei, sem vos questionar por causa da consciência. 26Porque a terra é do Senhor, e também sua plenitude. 27E se alguém dos descrentes vos convidar, e quiserdes ir, comei de tudo o que for posto diante de vós, sem vos questionar por causa da consciência. 28Mas se alguém vos disser: “Isto é sacrifício a ídolos”, não comais, por causa daquele que vos advertiu, e por causa da consciência. Porque a terra e sua plenitude pertencem ao Senhor. 29Mas digo da consciência do outro, não a tua. Por que, então, minha liberdade é julgada pela consciência do outro? 30E se eu participo da comida pela graça, por que sou ofendido naquilo que dou graças? 31Portanto, ao comer, ou ao beber, ou ao fazer qualquer coisa, fazei tudo para a glória de Deus. 32Sede sem escândalo, nem a judeus, nem a gregos, nem à Igreja de Deus. 33Assim como eu também agrado a todos em tudo, não buscando meu próprio proveito, mas sim o de muitos, para que assim possam se salvar.
1Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3and all ate the same spiritual food; 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7Neither be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8Neither let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell. 9Neither let us test the Lord, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents. 10Neither grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer. 11Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come. 12Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall. 13No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 14Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say. 16The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Christ? 17Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread. 18Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons. 21You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons. 22Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? 23“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up. 24Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor’s good. 25Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience, 26for “the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness.” 27But if one of those who don’t believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience. 28But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” 29Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other’s conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience? 30If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for that for which I give thanks? 31Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32Give no occasions for stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the assembly of God; 33even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.

Het brood, dat wij breken, is dat niet een gemeenschap des lichaams van Christus? 17Want een brood is het, zo zijn wij velen een lichaam, dewijl wij allen eens broods deelachtig zijn. 18Ziet Israel, dat naar het vlees is: hebben niet degenen, die de offeranden eten, gemeenschap met het altaar? 19Wat zeg ik dan? Dat een afgod iets is, of dat het afgodenoffer iets is? 20Ja, ik zeg, dat hetgeen de heidenen offeren, zij den duivelen offeren, en niet Gode; en ik wil niet, dat gij met de duivelen gemeenschap hebt. 21Gij kunt den drinkbeker des Heeren niet drinken, en den drinkbeker der duivelen; gij kunt niet deelachtig zijn aan de tafel des Heeren, en aan de tafel der duivelen. 22Of tergen wij den Heere? Zijn wij sterker dan Hij? 23Alle dingen zijn mij geoorloofd, maar alle dingen zijn niet oorbaar; alle dingen zijn mij geoorloofd, maar alle dingen stichten niet. 24Niemand zoeke dat zijns zelfs is; maar een iegelijk zoeke dat des anderen is. 25Eet al wat in het vleeshuis verkocht wordt, niets ondervragende, om des gewetens wil; 26Want de aarde is des Heeren, en de volheid derzelve. 27En indien u iemand van de ongelovigen noodt, en gij daar gaan wilt, eet al wat ulieden voorgesteld wordt, niets ondervragende, om des gewetens wil. 28Maar zo iemand tot ulieden zegt: Dat is afgodenoffer; eet het niet, om desgenen wil, die u dat te kennen gegeven heeft, en om des gewetens wil. Want de aarde is des Heeren, en de volheid derzelve. 29Doch ik zeg: om het geweten, niet van uzelven, maar des anderen; want waarom wordt mijn vrijheid geoordeeld van een ander geweten? 30En indien ik door genade der spijze deelachtig ben, waarom word ik gelasterd over hetgeen, waarvoor ik dankzeg? 31Hetzij dan dat gijlieden eet, hetzij dat gij drinkt, hetzij dat gij iets anders doet, doet het al ter ere Gods. 32Weest zonder aanstoot te geven, en den Joden, en den Grieken, en der Gemeente Gods. 33Gelijkerwijs ik ook in alles allen behaag, niet zoekende mijn eigen voordeel, maar het voordeel van velen, opdat zij mochten behouden worden.
