1Paroles de Néhémie, fils de Hacalia. Au mois de Kisleu, la vingtième année, comme j’étais à Suse, dans la capitale, 2Hanani, l’un de mes frères, et quelques hommes arrivèrent de Juda. Je les questionnai au sujet des Juifs réchappés qui étaient restés de la captivité, et au sujet de Jérusalem. 3Ils me répondirent : Ceux qui sont restés de la captivité sont là dans la province, au comble du malheur et de l’opprobre ; les murailles de Jérusalem sont en ruines, et ses portes sont consumées par le feu. 4Lorsque j’entendis ces choses, je m’assis, je pleurai, et je fus plusieurs jours dans la désolation. Je jeûnai et je priai devant le Dieu des cieux, 5et je dis : Ô Éternel, Dieu des cieux, Dieu grand et redoutable, toi qui gardes ton alliance et qui fais miséricorde à ceux qui t’aiment et qui observent tes commandements ! 6Que ton oreille soit attentive et que tes yeux soient ouverts : écoute la prière que ton serviteur t’adresse en ce moment, jour et nuit, pour tes serviteurs les enfants d’Israël, en confessant les péchés des enfants d’Israël, nos péchés contre toi ; car moi et la maison de mon père, nous avons péché. 7Nous t’avons offensé, et nous n’avons point observé les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que tu prescrivis à Moïse, ton serviteur. 8Souviens-toi de cette parole que tu donnas ordre à Moïse, ton serviteur, de prononcer. Lorsque vous pécherez, je vous disperserai parmi les peuples ; 9mais si vous revenez à moi, et si vous observez mes commandements et les mettez en pratique, alors, quand vous seriez exilés à l’extrémité du ciel, de là je vous rassemblerai et je vous ramènerai dans le lieu que j’ai choisi pour y faire résider mon nom. 10Ils sont tes serviteurs et ton peuple, que tu as rachetés par ta grande puissance et par ta main forte. 11Ah ! Seigneur, que ton oreille soit attentive à la prière de ton serviteur, et à la prière de tes serviteurs qui veulent craindre ton nom ! Donne aujourd’hui du succès à ton serviteur, et fais-lui trouver grâce devant cet homme ! J’étais alors échanson du roi.
1The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace, 2Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. 3They said to me, “The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.” 4When I heard these words, I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven, 5and said, “I beg you, Yahweh, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments: 6Let your ear now be attentive, and your eyes open, that you may listen to the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants while I confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Yes, I and my father’s house have sinned. 7We have dealt very corruptly against you, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances, which you commanded your servant Moses. 8“Remember, I beg you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you trespass, I will scatter you abroad among the peoples; 9but if you return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet will I gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.’ 10“Now these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power, and by your strong hand. 11Lord, I beg you, let your ear be attentive now to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who delight to fear your name; and please prosper your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Now I was cup bearer to the king.
1De geschiedenissen van Nehemia, zoon van Hachalja. En het geschiedde in de maand Chisleu, in het twintigste jaar, als ik te Susan in het paleis was; 2Zo kwam Hanani, een van mijn broederen, hij en sommige mannen uit Juda, en ik vraagde hen naar de Joden, die ontkomen waren (die overgebleven waren van de gevangenis), en naar Jeruzalem. 3En zij zeiden tot mij: De overgeblevenen, die van de gevangenis aldaar in het landschap zijn overgebleven, zijn in grote ellende en in versmaadheid; en Jeruzalems muur is verscheurd, en haar poorten zijn met vuur verbrand. 4En het geschiedde, als ik deze woorden hoorde, zo zat ik neder, en weende, en bedreef rouw, enige dagen; en ik was vastende en biddende voor het aangezicht van den God des hemels. 5En ik zeide: Och, HEERE, God des hemels, Gij, grote en vreselijke God! Die het verbond en de goedertierenheid houdt dien, die Hem liefhebben, en Zijn geboden houden. 6Laat toch Uw oor opmerkende, en Uw ogen open zijn, om te horen naar het gebed Uws knechts, dat ik heden voor Uw aangezicht bid, dag en nacht, voor de kinderen Israels, Uw knechten; en ik doe belijdenis over de zonden der kinderen Israels, die wij tegen U gezondigd hebben; ook ik en mijns vaders huis, wij hebben gezondigd. 7Wij hebben het ganselijk tegen U verdorven; en wij hebben niet gehouden de geboden, noch de inzettingen, noch de rechten, die Gij Uw knecht Mozes geboden hebt. 8Gedenk toch des woords, dat Gij Uw knecht Mozes geboden hebt, zeggende: Gijlieden zult overtreden, Ik zal u onder de volken verstrooien. 9En gij zult u tot Mij bekeren, en Mijn geboden houden, en die doen; al waren uw verdrevenen aan het einde des hemels, Ik zal hen vandaar verzamelen, en zal ze brengen tot de plaats, die Ik verkoren heb, om Mijn Naam aldaar te doen wonen. 10Zij zijn toch Uw knechten en Uw volk, dat Gij verlost hebt door Uw grote kracht en door Uw sterke hand. 11Och, HEERE, laat toch Uw oor opmerkende zijn op het gebed Uws knechts, en op het gebed Uwer knechten, die lust hebben Uw Naam te vrezen; en doe het toch Uw knecht heden wel gelukken, en geef hem barmhartigheid voor het aangezicht dezes mans. Ik nu was des konings schenker.
