1Cinq jours après, arriva le souverain sacrificateur Ananias, avec des anciens et un orateur nommé Tertulle. Ils portèrent plainte au gouverneur contre Paul. 2Paul fut appelé, et Tertulle se mit à l’accuser, en ces termes : 3Très excellent Félix, tu nous fais jouir d’une paix profonde, et cette nation a obtenu de salutaires réformes par tes soins prévoyants ; c’est ce que nous reconnaissons en tout et partout avec une entière gratitude. 4Mais, pour ne pas te retenir davantage, je te prie d’écouter, dans ta bonté, ce que nous avons à dire en peu de mots. 5Nous avons trouvé cet homme, qui est une peste, qui excite des divisions parmi tous les Juifs du monde, qui est chef de la secte des Nazaréens, 6et qui même a tenté de profaner le temple. Et nous l’avons arrêté. Nous avons voulu le juger selon notre loi ; 7mais le tribun Lysias étant survenu, l’a arraché de nos mains avec une grande violence, 8en ordonnant à ses accusateurs de venir devant toi. Tu pourras toi-même, en l’interrogeant, apprendre de lui tout ce dont nous l’accusons. 9Les Juifs se joignirent à l’accusation, soutenant que les choses étaient ainsi. 10Après que le gouverneur lui eut fait signe de parler, Paul répondit : Sachant que, depuis plusieurs années, tu es juge de cette nation, c’est avec confiance que je prends la parole pour défendre ma cause. 11Il n’y a pas plus de douze jours, tu peux t’en assurer, que je suis monté à Jérusalem pour adorer. 12On ne m’a trouvé ni dans le temple, ni dans les synagogues, ni dans la ville, disputant avec quelqu’un, ou provoquant un rassemblement séditieux de la foule. 13Et ils ne sauraient prouver ce dont ils m’accusent maintenant. 14Je t’avoue bien que je sers le Dieu de mes pères selon la voie qu’ils appellent une secte, croyant tout ce qui est écrit dans la loi et dans les prophètes, 15et ayant en Dieu cette espérance, comme ils l’ont eux-mêmes, qu’il y aura une résurrection des justes et des injustes. 16C’est pourquoi je m’efforce d’avoir constamment une conscience sans reproche devant Dieu et devant les hommes. 17Après une absence de plusieurs années, je suis venu pour faire des aumônes à ma nation, et pour présenter des offrandes. 18C’est alors que quelques Juifs d’Asie m’ont trouvé purifié dans le temple, sans attroupement ni tumulte. 19C’était à eux de paraître en ta présence et de se porter accusateurs, s’ils avaient quelque chose contre moi. 20Ou bien, que ceux-ci déclarent de quel crime ils m’ont trouvé coupable, lorsque j’ai comparu devant le sanhédrin, 21à moins que ce ne soit uniquement de ce cri que j’ai fait entendre au milieu d’eux : C’est à cause de la résurrection des morts que je suis aujourd’hui mis en jugement devant vous. 22Félix, qui savait assez exactement ce qui concernait cette doctrine, les ajourna, en disant : Quand le tribun Lysias sera venu, j’examinerai votre affaire. 23Et il donna l’ordre au centenier de garder Paul, en lui laissant une certaine liberté, et en n’empêchant aucun des siens de lui rendre des services. 24Quelques jours après, Félix vint avec Drusille, sa femme, qui était Juive, et il fit appeler Paul. Il l’entendit sur la foi en Christ. 25Mais, comme Paul discourait sur la justice, sur la tempérance, et sur le jugement à venir , Félix, effrayé , dit : Pour le moment retire-toi ; quand j’en trouverai l’occasion, je te rappellerai. 26Il espérait en même temps que Paul lui donnerait de l’argent ; aussi l’envoyait-il chercher assez fréquemment, pour s’entretenir avec lui. 27Deux ans s’écoulèrent ainsi, et Félix eut pour successeur Porcius Festus. Dans le désir de plaire aux Juifs, Félix laissa Paul en prison.
1After five days, the high priest, Ananias, came down with certain elders and an orator, one Tertullus. They informed the governor against Paul. 2When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, “Seeing that by you we enjoy much peace, and that excellent measures are coming to this nation, 3we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness. 4But, that I don’t delay you, I entreat you to bear with us and hear a few words. 5For we have found this man to be a plague, an instigator of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. 6He even tried to profane the temple, and we arrested him. 8By examining him yourself you may ascertain all these things of which we accuse him.” 9The Jews also joined in the attack, affirming that these things were so. 10When the governor had beckoned to him to speak, Paul answered, “Because I know that you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I cheerfully make my defense, 11seeing that you can recognize that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem. 12In the temple they didn’t find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the synagogues, or in the city. 13Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me. 14But this I confess to you, that after the Way, which they call a sect, so I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets; 15having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. 16Herein I also practice always having a conscience void of offense toward God and men. 17Now after some years, I came to bring gifts for the needy to my nation, and offerings; 18amid which certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, not with a mob, nor with turmoil. 19They ought to have been here before you, and to make accusation, if they had anything against me. 20Or else let these men themselves say what injustice they found in me when I stood before the council, 21unless it is for this one thing that I cried standing among them, ‘Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am being judged before you today!’” 22But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, “When Lysias, the commanding officer, comes down, I will decide your case.” 23He ordered the centurion that Paul should be kept in custody, and should have some privileges, and not to forbid any of his friends to serve him or to visit him. 24But after some days, Felix came with Drusilla, his wife, who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ Jesus. 25As he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, “Go your way for this time, and when it is convenient for me, I will summon you.” 26Meanwhile, he also hoped that money would be given to him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore also he sent for him more often, and talked with him. 27But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds.
1En vijf dagen daarna kwam de hogepriester Ananias af met de ouderlingen, en een zekeren voorspraak, genaamd Tertullus, dewelke verschenen voor den stadhouder tegen Paulus. 2En als hij geroepen was, begon Tertullus hem te beschuldigen, zeggende: 3Dat wij grote vrede door u bekomen, en dat vele loffelijke diensten deze volke geschieden door uw voorzichtigheid, machtigste Felix, nemen wij ganselijk en overal met alle dankbaarheid aan. 4Maar opdat ik u niet lang ophoude, ik bid u, dat gij ons, naar uw bescheidenheid, kortelijk hoort. 5Want wij hebben dezen man bevonden te zijn een pest, en een, die oproer verwekt onder al de Joden, door de ganse wereld, en een oppersten voorstander van de sekte der Nazarenen. 6Die ook gepoogd heeft den tempel te ontheiligen, welken wij ook gegrepen hebben, en naar onze wet hebben willen oordelen. 7Maar Lysias, de overste, daarover komende, heeft hem met groot geweld uit onze handen weggebracht; 8Gebiedende zijn beschuldigers tot u te komen; van dewelken gij zelf, hem onderzocht hebbende, zult kunnen verstaan al hetgeen, waarvan wij hem beschuldigen. 9En ook de Joden stemden het toe, zeggende, dat deze dingen alzo waren. 10Maar Paulus, als hem de stadhouder gewenkt had, dat hij zou spreken, antwoordde: Dewijl ik weet, dat gij nu vele jaren over dit volk rechter zijt geweest, zo verantwoord ik mijzelven met des te beteren moed. 11Alzo gij kunt weten, dat het niet meer dan twaalf dagen zijn, van dat ik ben opgekomen om te aanbidden te Jeruzalem; 12En zij hebben mij noch in den tempel gevonden tot iemand sprekende, of enige samenrotting des volks makende, noch in de synagogen, noch in de stad; 13En zij kunnen niet bewijzen, waarvan zij mij nu beschuldigen. 14Maar dit beken ik u, dat ik naar dien weg, welken zij sekte noemen, den God der vaderen alzo diene, gelovende alles, wat in de wet en in de profeten geschreven is; 15Hebbende hoop op God, welke dezen ook zelf verwachten, dat er een opstanding der doden wezen zal, beiden der rechtvaardigen en der onrechtvaardigen. 16En hierin oefen ik mijzelven, om altijd een onergerlijk geweten te hebben bij God en de mensen. 17Doch na vele jaren ben ik gekomen om aalmoezen te doen aan mijn volk, en offeranden. 18Waarover mij gevonden hebben, geheiligd zijnde, in den tempel, niet met volk, noch met beroerte, enige Joden uit Azie; 19Welke behoorden hier voor u tegenwoordig te zijn, en mij te beschuldigen, indien zij iets hadden tegen mij. 20Of dat dezen zelf zeggen of zij enig onrecht in mij gevonden hebben, als ik voor den raad stond; 21Dan van dit enig woord, hetwelk ik riep, staande onder hen: Over de opstanding der doden word ik heden van ulieden geoordeeld! 22Toen nu Felix dit gehoord had, stelde hij hen uit, zeggende: Als ik nader wetenschap van dezen weg zal hebben, wanneer Lysias, de overste, zal afgekomen zijn, zo zal ik volle kennis nemen van uw zaken. 23En hij beval den hoofdman over honderd, dat Paulus zou bewaard worden, en verlichting hebben, en dat hij niemand van de zijnen zou beletten hem te dienen, of tot hem te komen. 24En na sommige dagen, Felix, daar gekomen zijnde met Drusilla, zijn vrouw, die een Jodin was, ontbood Paulus, en hoorde hem van het geloof in Christus. 25En als hij handelde van rechtvaardigheid, en matigheid, en van het toekomende oordeel, Felix, zeer bevreesd geworden zijnde, antwoordde: Voor ditmaal ga heen; en als ik gelegenen tijd zal hebben bekomen, zo zal ik u tot mij roepen. 26En tegelijk ook hopende, dat hem van Paulus geld gegeven zou worden, opdat hij hem losliet; waarom hij hem ook dikwijls ontbood, en sprak met hem. 27Maar als twee jaren vervuld waren, kreeg Felix Porcius Festus in zijn plaats; en Felix, willende den Joden gunst bewijzen, liet Paulus gevangen.
