1J’étais à mon poste, Et je me tenais sur la tour ; Je veillais, pour voir ce que l’Éternel me dirait, Et ce que je répliquerais après ma plainte. 2L’Éternel m’adressa la parole, et il dit : Écris la prophétie : Grave-la sur des tables, Afin qu’on la lise couramment. 3Car c’est une prophétie dont le temps est déjà fixé, Elle marche vers son terme, et elle ne mentira pas ; Si elle tarde, attends-la, Car elle s’accomplira, elle s’accomplira certainement. 4Voici, son âme s’est enflée, elle n’est pas droite en lui ; Mais le juste vivra par sa foi. 5Pareil à celui qui est ivre et arrogant, L’orgueilleux ne demeure pas tranquille ; Il élargit sa bouche comme le séjour des morts, Il est insatiable comme la mort ; Il attire à lui toutes les nations, Il assemble auprès de lui tous les peuples. 6Ne sera-t-il pas pour tous un sujet de sarcasme, De railleries et d’énigmes ? On dira : Malheur à celui qui accumule ce qui n’est pas à lui ! Jusques à quand ?… Malheur à celui qui augmente le fardeau de ses dettes ! 7Tes créanciers ne se lèveront-ils pas soudain ? Tes oppresseurs ne se réveilleront-ils pas ? Et tu deviendras leur proie. 8Parce que tu as pillé beaucoup de nations, Tout le reste des peuples te pillera ; Car tu as répandu le sang des hommes, Tu as commis des violences dans le pays, Contre la ville et tous ses habitants. 9Malheur à celui qui amasse pour sa maison des gains iniques, Afin de placer son nid dans un lieu élevé, Pour se garantir de la main du malheur ! 10C’est l’opprobre de ta maison que tu as résolu, En détruisant des peuples nombreux, Et c’est contre toi-même que tu as péché. 11Car la pierre crie du milieu de la muraille, Et le bois qui lie la charpente lui répond. 12Malheur à celui qui bâtit une ville avec le sang, Qui fonde une ville avec l’iniquité ! 13Voici, quand l’Éternel des armées l’a résolu, Les peuples travaillent pour le feu, Les nations se fatiguent en vain. 14Car la terre sera remplie de la connaissance de la gloire de l’Éternel, Comme le fond de la mer par les eaux qui le couvrent. 15Malheur à celui qui fait boire son prochain, À toi qui verses ton outre et qui l’enivres, Afin de voir sa nudité ! 16Tu seras rassasié de honte plus que de gloire ; Bois aussi toi-même, et découvre-toi ! La coupe de la droite de l’Éternel se tournera vers toi, Et l’ignominie souillera ta gloire. 17Car les violences contre le Liban retomberont sur toi, Et les ravages des bêtes t’effraieront, Parce que tu as répandu le sang des hommes, Et commis des violences dans le pays, Contre la ville et tous ses habitants. 18À quoi sert une image taillée, pour qu’un ouvrier la taille ? À quoi sert une image en fonte et qui enseigne le mensonge, Pour que l’ouvrier qui l’a faite place en elle sa confiance, Tandis qu’il fabrique des idoles muettes ? 19Malheur à celui qui dit au bois : Lève-toi ! À une pierre muette : Réveille-toi ! Donnera-t-elle instruction ? Voici, elle est garnie d’or et d’argent, Mais il n’y a point en elle un esprit qui l’anime. 20L’Éternel est dans son saint temple. Que toute la terre fasse silence devant lui !
1I will stand at my watch, and set myself on the ramparts, and will look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. 2Yahweh answered me, “Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he who runs may read it. 3For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won’t delay. 4Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith. 5Yes, moreover, wine is treacherous. A haughty man who doesn’t stay at home, who enlarges his desire as Sheol, and he is like death, and can’t be satisfied, but gathers to himself all nations, and heaps to himself all peoples. 6Won’t all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases that which is not his, and who enriches himself by extortion! How long?’ 7Won’t your debtors rise up suddenly, and wake up those who make you tremble, and you will be their victim? 8Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples will plunder you, because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all who dwell in it. 9Woe to him who gets an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil! 10You have devised shame to your house, by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul. 11For the stone will cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the woodwork will answer it. 12Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity! 13Behold, isn’t it of Yahweh of Armies that the peoples labor for the fire, and the nations weary themselves for vanity? 14For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Yahweh’s glory, as the waters cover the sea. 15“Woe to him who gives his neighbor drink, pouring your inflaming wine until they are drunk, so that you may gaze at their naked bodies! 16You are filled with shame, and not glory. You will also drink, and be exposed! The cup of Yahweh’s right hand will come around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory. 17For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and the destruction of the animals, which made them afraid; because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to every city and to those who dwell in them. 18“What value does the engraved image have, that its maker has engraved it; the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make mute idols? 19Woe to him who says to the wood, ‘Awake!’ or to the mute stone, ‘Arise!’ Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in its midst. 20But Yahweh is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him!”
1Ik stond op mijn wacht, en ik stelde mij op de sterkte, en ik hield wacht om te zien, wat Hij in mij spreken zou, en wat ik antwoorden zou op mijn bestraffing. 2Toen antwoordde mij de HEERE, en zeide: Schrijf het gezicht, en stel het duidelijk op tafelen, opdat daarin leze die voorbijloopt. 3Want het gezicht zal nog tot een bestemden tijd zijn, dan zal Hij het op het einde voortbrengen, en niet liegen; zo Hij vertoeft, verbeid Hem, want Hij zal gewisselijk komen, Hij zal niet achterblijven. 4Ziet, zijn ziel verheft zich, zij is niet recht in hem; maar de rechtvaardige zal door zijn geloof leven. 5En ook dewijl hij trouwelooslijk handelt bij den wijn, een trots man is, en in zijn woning niet blijft; die zijn ziel wijd opendoet als het graf, en gelijk de dood is, die niet zat wordt, en tot zich verzamelt al de heidenen, en vergadert tot zich alle volken. 6Zouden dan niet al dezelve van hem een spreekwoord opnemen, en een uitlegging der raadselen van hem? En men zal zeggen: Wee dien, die vermeerdert hetgeen het zijne niet is (hoe lange!), en dien, die op zich laadt dik slijk. 7Zullen niet onvoorziens opstaan, die u bijten zullen, en ontwaken, die u zullen bewegen, en zult gij hun niet tot plundering worden? 8Omdat gij vele heidenen beroofd hebt, zo zullen alle overgebleven volken u beroven; om het bloed der mensen, en het geweld aan het land, de stad, en alle inwoners derzelve. 9Wee dien, die met kwade gierigheid giert voor zijn huis, opdat hij in de hoogte zijn nest stelle, om bevrijd te zijn uit de hand des kwaads. 10Gij hebt schaamte beraadslaagd voor uw huis; uitroeiende vele volken, zo hebt gij gezondigd tegen uw ziel. 11Want de steen uit den muur roept, en de balk uit het hout antwoordt dien. 12Wee dien, die de stad met bloed bouwt, en die de stad met onrecht bevestigt! 13Ziet, is het niet van den HEERE der heirscharen, dat de volken arbeiden ten vure, en de lieden zich vermoeien tevergeefs? 14Want de aarde zal vervuld worden, dat zij de heerlijkheid des HEEREN bekennen, gelijk de wateren den bodem der zee bedekken. 15Wee dien, die zijn naaste te drinken geeft, gij, die uw wijnfles daarbij voegt, en ook dronken maakt, opdat gij hun naaktheden aanschouwt. 16Gij zult ook verzadigd worden met schande, voor eer; drinkt gij ook, en ontbloot de voorhuid; de beker der rechterhand des HEEREN zal zich tot u wenden, en er zal een schandelijk uitbraaksel over uw heerlijkheid zijn. 17Want het geweld, dat tegen Libanon begaan is, zal u bedekken, en de verwoesting der beesten zal ze verschrikken, om des bloeds wil der mensen, en des gewelds in het land, de stad en aan alle inwoners derzelve. 18Wat zal het gesneden beeld baten, dat zijn formeerder het gesneden heeft? of het gegoten beeld, hetwelk een leugenleraar is, dat de formeerder op zijn formeersel vertrouwt, als hij stomme afgoden gemaakt heeft? 19Wee dien, die tot het hout zegt: Word wakker! en: Ontwaak! tot den zwijgenden steen. Zou het leren? Ziet, het is met goud en zilver overtrokken, en er is gans geen geest in het midden van hetzelve. 20Maar de HEERE is in Zijn heiligen tempel. Zwijg voor Zijn aangezicht, gij ganse aarde!
