1Après ces choses, le roi Assuérus fit monter au pouvoir Haman, fils d’Hammedatha, l’Agaguite ; il l’éleva en dignité et plaça son siège au-dessus de ceux de tous les chefs qui étaient auprès de lui. 2Tous les serviteurs du roi, qui se tenaient à la porte du roi, fléchissaient le genou et se prosternaient devant Haman, car tel était l’ordre du roi à son égard. Mais Mardochée ne fléchissait point le genou et ne se prosternait point. 3Et les serviteurs du roi, qui se tenaient à la porte du roi, dirent à Mardochée : Pourquoi transgresses-tu l’ordre du roi ? 4Comme ils le lui répétaient chaque jour et qu’il ne les écoutait pas, ils en firent rapport à Haman, pour voir si Mardochée persisterait dans sa résolution ; car il leur avait dit qu’il était Juif. 5Et Haman vit que Mardochée ne fléchissait point le genou et ne se prosternait point devant lui. Il fut rempli de fureur ; 6mais il dédaigna de porter la main sur Mardochée seul, car on lui avait dit de quel peuple était Mardochée, et il voulut détruire le peuple de Mardochée, tous les Juifs qui se trouvaient dans tout le royaume d’Assuérus. 7Au premier mois, qui est le mois de Nisan, la douzième année du roi Assuérus, on jeta le pur, c’est-à-dire le sort, devant Haman, pour chaque jour et pour chaque mois, jusqu’au douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar. 8Alors Haman dit au roi Assuérus : Il y a dans toutes les provinces de ton royaume un peuple dispersé et à part parmi les peuples, ayant des lois différentes de celles de tous les peuples et n’observant point les lois du roi. Il n’est pas dans l’intérêt du roi de le laisser en repos. 9Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’on écrive l’ordre de les faire périr ; et je pèserai dix mille talents d’argent entre les mains des fonctionnaires, pour qu’on les porte dans le trésor du roi. 10Le roi ôta son anneau de la main, et le remit à Haman, fils d’Hammedatha, l’Agaguite, ennemi des Juifs. 11Et le roi dit à Haman : L’argent t’est donné, et ce peuple aussi ; fais-en ce que tu voudras. 12Les secrétaires du roi furent appelés le treizième jour du premier mois, et l’on écrivit, suivant tout ce qui fut ordonné par Haman, aux satrapes du roi, aux gouverneurs de chaque province et aux chefs de chaque peuple, à chaque province selon son écriture et à chaque peuple selon sa langue. Ce fut au nom du roi Assuérus que l’on écrivit, et on scella avec l’anneau du roi. 13Les lettres furent envoyées par les courriers dans toutes les provinces du roi, pour qu’on détruisît, qu’on tuât et qu’on fît périr tous les Juifs, jeunes et vieux, petits enfants et femmes, en un seul jour, le treizième du douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar, et pour que leurs biens fussent livrés au pillage. 14Ces lettres renfermaient une copie de l’édit qui devait être publié dans chaque province, et invitaient tous les peuples à se tenir prêts pour ce jour-là. 15Les courriers partirent en toute hâte, d’après l’ordre du roi. L’édit fut aussi publié dans Suse, la capitale ; et tandis que le roi et Haman étaient à boire, la ville de Suse était dans la consternation.
1After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes who were with him. 2All the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate bowed down, and paid homage to Haman; for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai didn’t bow down or pay him homage. 3Then the king’s servants, who were in the king’s gate, said to Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the king’s commandment?” 4Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily to him, and he didn’t listen to them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s reason would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew. 5When Haman saw that Mordecai didn’t bow down, nor pay him homage, Haman was full of wrath. 6But he scorned the thought of laying hands on Mordecai alone, for they had made known to him Mordecai’s people. Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even Mordecai’s people. 7In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, and chose the twelfth month, which is the month Adar. 8Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom, and their laws are different than other people’s. They don’t keep the king’s laws. Therefore it is not for the king’s profit to allow them to remain. 9If it pleases the king, let it be written that they be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who are in charge of the king’s business, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.” 10The king took his ring from his hand, and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy. 11The king said to Haman, “The silver is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.” 12Then the king’s scribes were called in on the first month, on the thirteenth day of the month; and all that Haman commanded was written to the king’s satraps, and to the governors who were over every province, and to the princes of every people, to every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus, and it was sealed with the king’s ring. 13Letters were sent by couriers into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to plunder their possessions. 14A copy of the letter, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published to all the peoples, that they should be ready against that day. 15The couriers went out in haste by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given out in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.
1Na deze geschiedenissen maakte de koning Ahasveros Haman groot, den zoon van Hammedatha, den Agagiet, en hij verhoogde hem, en hij zette zijn stoel boven al de vorsten, die bij hem waren. 2En al de knechten des konings, die in de poort des konings waren, neigden en bogen zich neder voor Haman; want de koning had alzo van hem bevolen; maar Mordechai neigde zich niet, en boog zich niet neder. 3Toen zeiden de knechten des konings, die in de poort des konings waren, tot Mordechai: Waarom overtreedt gij des konings gebod? 4Het geschiedde nu, toen zij dit van dag tot dag tot hem zeiden, en hij naar hen niet hoorde, zo gaven zij het Haman te kennen, opdat zij zagen, of de woorden van Mordechai bestaan zouden; want hij had hun te kennen gegeven, dat hij een Jood was. 5Toen Haman zag, dat Mordechai zich niet neigde, noch zich voor hem nederboog, zo werd Haman vervuld met grimmigheid. 6Doch hij verachtte in zijn ogen, dat hij aan Mordechai alleen de hand zou slaan (want men had hem het volk van Mordechai aangewezen); maar Haman zocht al de Joden, die in het ganse koninkrijk van Ahasveros waren, namelijk het volk van Mordechai, te verdelgen. 7In de eerste maand (deze is de maand Nisan) in het twaalfde jaar van den koning Ahasveros, wierp men het Pur, dat is, het lot, voor Hamans aangezicht, van dag tot dag, en van maand tot maand, tot de twaalfde maand toe; deze is de maand Adar. 8Want Haman had tot den koning Ahasveros gezegd: Er is een volk, verstrooid en verdeeld onder de volken in al de landschappen uws koninkrijks; en hun wetten zijn verscheiden van de wetten aller volken; ook doen zij des konings wetten niet; daarom is het den koning niet oorbaar hen te laten blijven. 9Indien het den koning goeddunkt, laat er geschreven worden, dat men hen verdoe; zo zal ik tien duizend talenten zilvers opwegen in de handen dergenen, die het werk doen, om in des konings schatten te brengen. 10Toen trok de koning zijn ring van zijn hand, en hij gaf hem aan Haman, den zoon van Hammedatha, den Agagiet, der Joden tegenpartijder. 11En de koning zeide tot Haman: Dat zilver zij u geschonken, ook dat volk, om daarmede te doen, naar dat het goed is in uw ogen. 12Toen werden de schrijvers des konings geroepen, in de eerste maand, op den dertienden dag derzelve, en er werd geschreven naar alles, wat Haman beval, aan de stadhouders des konings, en aan de landvoogden, die over elk landschap waren, en aan de vorsten van elk volk, elk landschap naar zijn schrift, en elk volk naar zijn spraak; er werd geschreven in den naam van den koning Ahasveros, en het werd met des konings ring verzegeld. 13De brieven nu werden gezonden door de hand der lopers tot al de landschappen des konings, dat men zou verdelgen, doden en verdoen al de Joden, van den jonge tot den oude toe, de kleine kinderen en de vrouwen, op een dag, op den dertienden der twaalfde maand (deze is de maand Adar), en dat men hun buit zou roven. 14De inhoud van het schrift was, dat er een wet zou gegeven worden in alle landschappen, openbaar aan alle volken, dat zij tegen denzelfden dag zouden gereed zijn. 15De lopers gingen uit, voortgedrongen zijnde door het woord des konings, en de wet werd uitgegeven in den burg Susan. En de koning en Haman zaten en dronken, doch de stad Susan was verward.
