1Darius trouva bon d’établir sur le royaume cent vingt satrapes, qui devaient être dans tout le royaume. 2Il mit à leur tête trois chefs, au nombre desquels était Daniel, afin que ces satrapes leur rendissent compte, et que le roi ne souffrît aucun dommage. 3Daniel surpassait les chefs et les satrapes, parce qu’il y avait en lui un esprit supérieur ; et le roi pensait à l’établir sur tout le royaume. 4Alors les chefs et les satrapes cherchèrent une occasion d’accuser Daniel en ce qui concernait les affaires du royaume. Mais ils ne purent trouver aucune occasion, ni aucune chose à reprendre, parce qu’il était fidèle, et qu’on n’apercevait chez lui ni faute, ni rien de mauvais. 5Et ces hommes dirent : Nous ne trouverons aucune occasion contre ce Daniel, à moins que nous n’en trouvions une dans la loi de son Dieu. 6Puis ces chefs et ces satrapes se rendirent tumultueusement auprès du roi, et lui parlèrent ainsi : Roi Darius, vis éternellement ! 7Tous les chefs du royaume, les intendants, les satrapes, les conseillers, et les gouverneurs sont d’avis qu’il soit publié un édit royal, avec une défense sévère, portant que quiconque, dans l’espace de trente jours, adressera des prières à quelque dieu ou à quelque homme, excepté à toi, ô roi, sera jeté dans la fosse aux lions. 8Maintenant, ô roi, confirme la défense, et écris le décret, afin qu’il soit irrévocable, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, qui est immuable. 9Là-dessus le roi Darius écrivit le décret et la défense. 10Lorsque Daniel sut que le décret était écrit, il se retira dans sa maison, où les fenêtres de la chambre supérieure étaient ouvertes dans la direction de Jérusalem ; et trois fois le jour il se mettait à genoux, il priait, et il louait son Dieu, comme il le faisait auparavant. 11Alors ces hommes entrèrent tumultueusement, et ils trouvèrent Daniel qui priait et invoquait son Dieu. 12Puis ils se présentèrent devant le roi, et lui dirent au sujet de la défense royale : N’as-tu pas écrit une défense portant que quiconque dans l’espace de trente jours adresserait des prières à quelque dieu ou à quelque homme, excepté à toi, ô roi, serait jeté dans la fosse aux lions ? Le roi répondit : La chose est certaine, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, qui est immuable. 13Ils prirent de nouveau la parole et dirent au roi : Daniel, l’un des captifs de Juda, n’a tenu aucun compte de toi, ô roi, ni de la défense que tu as écrite, et il fait sa prière trois fois le jour. 14Le roi fut très affligé quand il entendit cela ; il prit à cœur de délivrer Daniel, et jusqu’au coucher du soleil il s’efforça de le sauver. 15Mais ces hommes insistèrent auprès du roi, et lui dirent : Sache, ô roi, que la loi des Mèdes et des Perses exige que toute défense ou tout décret confirmé par le roi soit irrévocable. 16Alors le roi donna l’ordre qu’on amenât Daniel, et qu’on le jetât dans la fosse aux lions. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel : Puisse ton Dieu, que tu sers avec persévérance, te délivrer ! 17On apporta une pierre, et on la mit sur l’ouverture de la fosse ; le roi la scella de son anneau et de l’anneau de ses grands, afin que rien ne fût changé à l’égard de Daniel. 18Le roi se rendit ensuite dans son palais ; il passa la nuit à jeun, il ne fit point venir de concubine auprès de lui, et il ne put se livrer au sommeil . 19Le roi se leva au point du jour, avec l’aurore, et il alla précipitamment à la fosse aux lions. 20En s’approchant de la fosse, il appela Daniel d’une voix triste. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel : Daniel, serviteur du Dieu vivant, ton Dieu, que tu sers avec persévérance, a-t-il pu te délivrer des lions ? 21Et Daniel dit au roi : Roi, vis éternellement ? 22Mon Dieu a envoyé son ange et fermé la gueule des lions, qui ne m’ont fait aucun mal, parce que j’ai été trouvé innocent devant lui ; et devant toi non plus, ô roi, je n’ai rien fait de mauvais. 23Alors le roi fut très joyeux, et il ordonna qu’on fît sortir Daniel de la fosse. Daniel fut retiré de la fosse, et on ne trouva sur lui aucune blessure, parce qu’il avait eu confiance en son Dieu. 24Le roi ordonna que ces hommes qui avaient accusé Daniel fussent amenés et jetés dans la fosse aux lions, eux, leurs enfants et leurs femmes ; et avant qu’ils fussent parvenus au fond de la fosse, les lions les saisirent et brisèrent tous leurs os. 25Après cela, le roi Darius écrivit à tous les peuples, à toutes les nations, aux hommes de toutes langues, qui habitaient sur toute la terre : Que la paix vous soit donnée avec abondance ! 26J’ordonne que, dans toute l’étendue de mon royaume, on ait de la crainte et de la frayeur pour le Dieu de Daniel. Car il est le Dieu vivant, et il subsiste éternellement ; son royaume ne sera jamais détruit, et sa domination durera jusqu’à la fin. 27C’est lui qui délivre et qui sauve, qui opère des signes et des prodiges dans les cieux et sur la terre. C’est lui qui a délivré Daniel de la puissance des lions. 28Daniel prospéra sous le règne de Darius, et sous le règne de Cyrus, le Perse.
1It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred twenty satraps, who should be throughout the whole kingdom; 2and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one; that these satraps might give account to them, and that the king should have no damage. 3Then this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. 4Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion nor fault, because he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. 5Then these men said, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God. 6Then these presidents and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus to him, King Darius, live forever. 7All the presidents of the kingdom, the deputies and the satraps, the counselors and the governors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a strong decree, that whoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. 8Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it not be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which doesn’t alter. 9Therefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree. 10When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his room toward Jerusalem) and he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before. 11Then these men assembled together, and found Daniel making petition and supplication before his God. 12Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king’s decree: Haven’t you signed an decree, that every man who shall make petition to any god or man within thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which doesn’t alter. 13Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, doesn’t respect you, O king, nor the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day. 14Then the king, when he heard these words, was very displeased, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he labored until the going down of the sun to rescue him. 15Then these men assembled together to the king, and said to the king, Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians, that no decree nor statute which the king establishes may be changed. 16Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you. 17A stone was brought, and laid on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel. 18Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him. 19Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste to the den of lions. 20When he came near to the den to Daniel, he cried with a lamentable voice; the king spoke and said to Daniel, Daniel, servant of the living God, is your God, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions? 21Then Daniel said to the king, O king, live forever. 22My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me; because as before him innocence was found in me; and also before you, O king, have I done no hurt. 23Then was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. 24The king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions mauled them, and broke all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den. 25Then king Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. 26I make a decree, that in all the dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; for he is the living God, and steadfast forever, His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed; and his dominion shall be even to the end. 27He delivers and rescues, and he works signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. 28So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
1En het dacht Darius goed, dat hij over het koninkrijk stelde honderd en twintig stadhouders, die over het ganse koninkrijk zijn zouden; 2En over dezelve drie vorsten, van dewelke Daniel de eerste zou zijn, denwelken die stadhouders zelfs zouden rekenschap geven, opdat de koning geen schade leed. 3Toen overtrof deze Daniel die vorsten en die stadhouders, daarom dat een voortreffelijke geest in hem was; en de koning dacht hem te stellen over het gehele koninkrijk. 4Toen zochten de vorsten en de stadhouders gelegenheid te vinden, tegen Daniel vanwege het koninkrijk; maar zij konden geen gelegenheid noch misdaad vinden, dewijl hij getrouw was, en geen vergrijping noch misdaad in hem gevonden werd. 5Toen zeiden die mannen: Wij zullen tegen dezen Daniel geen gelegenheid vinden, tenzij wij tegen hem iets vinden in de wet zijns Gods. 6Zo kwamen deze vorsten en de stadhouders met hopen tot den koning, en zeiden aldus tot hem: O koning Darius, leef in eeuwigheid! 7Al de vorsten des rijks, de overheden en stadhouders, de raadsheren en landvoogden hebben zich beraadslaagd een koninklijke ordonnantie te stellen, en een sterk gebod te maken, dat al wie in dertig dagen een verzoek zal doen van enigen god of mens, behalve van u, o koning! die zal in den kuil der leeuwen geworpen worden. 8Nu, o koning! gij zult een gebod bevestigen, en een schrift tekenen, dat niet veranderd worde, naar de wet der Meden en der Perzen, die niet mag wederroepen worden. 9Daarom tekende de koning Darius dat schrift en gebod. 10Toen nu Daniel verstond, dat dit schrift getekend was, ging hij in zijn huis, en hij knielde drie tijden 's daags op zijn knieen, en hij bad, en deed belijdenis voor zijn God, ganselijk gelijk hij voor dezen gedaan had. 11Toen kwamen die mannen met hopen, en zij vonden Daniel biddende en smekende voor zijn God. 12Toen kwamen zij nader, en spraken voor den koning van het gebod des konings: Hebt gij niet een gebod getekend, dat alle man, die in dertig dagen van enigen god of mens iets verzoeken zou, behalve van u, o koning! in den kuil der leeuwen zou geworpen worden? De koning antwoordde en zeide: Het is een vaste rede, naar de wet der Meden en Perzen, die niet mag herroepen worden. 13Toen antwoordden zij, en zeiden voor den koning: Daniel, een van de gevankelijk weggevoerden uit Juda heeft, o koning! op u geen acht gesteld, noch op het gebod dat gij getekend hebt; maar hij bidt op drie tijden 's daags zijn gebed. 14Toen de koning deze rede hoorde, was hij zeer bedroefd bij zichzelven, en hij stelde het hart op Daniel om hem te verlossen; ja, tot den ondergang der zon toe bemoeide hij zich, om hem te redden. 15Toen kwamen die mannen met hopen tot den koning, en zij zeiden tot den koning: Weet, o koning! dat der Meden en der Perzen wet is, dat geen gebod noch ordonnantie, die de koning verordend heeft, mag veranderd worden. 16Toen beval de koning, en zij brachten Daniel voor, en wierpen hem in den kuil der leeuwen; en de koning antwoordde en zeide tot Daniel: Uw God, Dien gij geduriglijk eert, Die verlosse u! 17En er werd een steen gebracht, en op den mond des kuils gelegd: en de koning verzegelde denzelven met zijn ring, en met den ring zijner geweldigen, opdat de wil aangaande Daniel niet zou veranderd worden. 18Toen ging de koning naar zijn paleis, en overnachtte nuchteren, en liet geen vreugdespel voor zich brengen; en zijn slaap week verre van hem. 19Toen stond de koning in den vroegen morgenstond met het licht op, en hij ging met haast henen tot den kuil der leeuwen. 20Als hij nu tot den kuil genaderd was, riep hij tot Daniel met een droeve stem; de koning antwoordde en zeide tot Daniel: O Daniel, gij knecht des levenden Gods! heeft ook uw God, Dien gij geduriglijk eert, u van de leeuwen kunnen verlossen? 21Toen sprak Daniel tot den koning: O koning, leef in eeuwigheid! 22Mijn God heeft Zijn engel gezonden, en Hij heeft den muil der leeuwen toegesloten, dat zij mij niet beschadigd hebben, omdat voor Hem onschuld in mij gevonden is; ook heb ik, o koning! tegen u geen misdaad gedaan. 23Toen werd de koning bij zichzelven zeer vrolijk, en zeide, dat men Daniel uit den kuil trekken zou. Toen Daniel uit den kuil opgetrokken was, zo werd er geen schade aan hem gevonden, dewijl hij in zijn God geloofd had. 24Toen beval de koning, en zij brachten die mannen voor, die Daniel overluid beschuldigd hadden, en zij wierpen in den kuil der leeuwen hen, hun kinderen, en hun vrouwen; en zij kwamen niet op den grond des kuils, of de leeuwen heersten over hen, zij vermorzelden ook al hun beenderen. 25Toen schreef de koning Darius aan alle volken, natien en tongen, die op de ganse aarde woonden: Uw vrede worde vermenigvuldigd! 26Van mij is een bevel gegeven, dat men in de ganse heerschappij mijns koninkrijks beve en siddere voor het aangezicht van den God van Daniel; want Hij is de levende God, en bestendig in eeuwigheden, en Zijn koninkrijk is niet verderfelijk, en Zijn heerschappij is tot het einde toe. 27Hij verlost en redt, en Hij doet tekenen en wonderen in den hemel en op de aarde; Die heeft Daniel uit het geweld der leeuwen verlost. 28Deze Daniel nu had voorspoed in het koninkrijk van Darius, en in het koninkrijk van Kores, den Perziaan.
