1Pour ce qui concerne l’avènement de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ et notre réunion avec lui, nous vous prions, frères, 2de ne pas vous laisser facilement ébranler dans votre bon sens, et de ne pas vous laisser troubler, soit par quelque inspiration, soit par quelque parole, ou par quelque lettre qu’on dirait venir de nous, comme si le jour du Seigneur était déjà là. 3Que personne ne vous séduise d’aucune manière ; car il faut que l’apostasie soit arrivée auparavant, et qu’on ait vu paraître l’homme du péché, le fils de la perdition, 4l’adversaire qui s’élève au-dessus de tout ce qu’on appelle Dieu ou de ce qu’on adore, jusqu’à s’asseoir dans le temple de Dieu, se proclamant lui-même Dieu. 5Ne vous souvenez-vous pas que je vous disais ces choses, lorsque j’étais encore chez vous ? 6Et maintenant vous savez ce qui le retient, afin qu’il ne paraisse qu’en son temps. 7Car le mystère de l’iniquité agit déjà ; il faut seulement que celui qui le retient encore ait disparu . 8Et alors paraîtra l’impie, que le Seigneur Jésus détruira par le souffle de sa bouche, et qu’il anéantira par l’éclat de son avènement. 9L’apparition de cet impie se fera, par la puissance de Satan, avec toutes sortes de miracles, de signes et de prodiges mensongers, 10et avec toutes les séductions de l’iniquité pour ceux qui périssent parce qu’ils n’ont pas reçu l’amour de la vérité pour être sauvés. 11Aussi Dieu leur envoie une puissance d’égarement, pour qu’ils croient au mensonge, 12afin que tous ceux qui n’ont pas cru à la vérité, mais qui ont pris plaisir à l’injustice, soient condamnés. 13Pour nous, frères bien-aimés du Seigneur, nous devons à votre sujet rendre continuellement grâces à Dieu, parce que Dieu vous a choisis dès le commencement pour le salut, par la sanctification de l’Esprit et par la foi en la vérité. 14C’est à quoi il vous a appelés par notre Évangile, pour que vous possédiez la gloire de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ. 15Ainsi donc, frères, demeurez fermes, et retenez les instructions que vous avez reçues, soit par notre parole, soit par notre lettre. 16Que notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ lui-même, et Dieu notre Père, qui nous a aimés, et qui nous a donné par sa grâce une consolation éternelle et une bonne espérance, 17consolent vos cœurs, et vous affermissent en toute bonne œuvre et en toute bonne parole !
1Now, brothers, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to him, we ask you 2not to be quickly shaken in your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by letter as from us, saying that the day of Christ had come. 3Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be, unless the departure comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction, 4he who opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself up as God. 5Don’t you remember that, when I was still with you, I told you these things? 6Now you know what is restraining him, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season. 7For the mystery of lawlessness already works. Only there is one who restrains now, until he is taken out of the way. 8Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will kill with the breath of his mouth, and destroy by the manifestation of his coming; 9even he whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10and with all deception of wickedness for those who are being lost, because they didn’t receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11Because of this, God sends them a working of error, that they should believe a lie; 12that they all might be judged who didn’t believe the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 13But we are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth; 14to which he called you through our Good News, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15So then, brothers, stand firm, and hold the traditions which you were taught by us, whether by word, or by letter. 16Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, 17comfort your hearts and establish you in every good work and word.
1En wij bidden u, broeders, door de toekomst van onzen Heere Jezus Christus, en onze toevergadering tot Hem, 2Dat gij niet haastelijk bewogen wordt van verstand, of verschrikt, noch door geest, noch door woord, noch door zendbrief, als van ons geschreven, alsof de dag van Christus aanstaande ware. 3Dat u niemand verleide op enigerlei wijze; want die komt niet, tenzij dat eerst de afval gekomen zij, en dat geopenbaard zij de mens der zonde, de zoon des verderfs; 4Die zich tegenstelt, en verheft boven al wat God genaamd, of als God geeerd wordt, alzo dat hij in den tempel Gods als een God zal zitten, zichzelven vertonende, dat hij God is. 5Gedenkt gij niet, dat ik, nog bij u zijnde, u deze dingen gezegd heb? 6En nu, wat hem wederhoudt, weet gij, opdat hij geopenbaard worde te zijner eigen tijd. 7Want de verborgenheid der ongerechtigheid wordt alrede gewrocht; alleenlijk, Die hem nu wederhoudt, Die zal hem wederhouden, totdat hij uit het midden zal weggedaan worden. 8En alsdan zal de ongerechtige geopenbaard worden, denwelken de Heere verdoen zal door den Geest Zijns monds, en te niet maken door de verschijning Zijner toekomst; 9Hem, zeg ik, wiens toekomst is naar de werking des satans, in alle kracht, en tekenen, en wonderen der leugen; 10En in alle verleiding der onrechtvaardigheid in degenen, die verloren gaan; daarvoor dat zij de liefde der waarheid niet aangenomen hebben, om zalig te worden. 11En daarom zal God hun zenden een kracht der dwaling, dat zij de leugen zouden geloven; 12Opdat zij allen veroordeeld worden, die de waarheid niet geloofd hebben, maar een welbehagen hebben gehad in de ongerechtigheid. 13Maar wij zijn schuldig altijd God te danken over u, broeders, die van den Heere bemind zijt, dat u God van den beginne verkoren heeft tot zaligheid, in heiligmaking des Geestes, en geloof der waarheid; 14Waartoe Hij u geroepen heeft door ons Evangelie, tot verkrijging der heerlijkheid van onzen Heere Jezus Christus. 15Zo dan, broeders, staat vast en houdt de inzettingen, die u geleerd zijn, hetzij door ons woord, hetzij door onzen zendbrief. 16En onze Heere Jezus Christus Zelf, en onze God en Vader, Die ons heeft liefgehad, en gegeven heeft een eeuwige vertroosting en goede hoop in genade, 17Vertrooste uw harten, en versterke u in alle goed woord en werk.
