1¡CÓMO se ha oscurecido el oro! ¡Cómo el buen oro se ha demudado! Las piedras del santuario están esparcidas por las encrucijadas de todas las calles. 2Los hijos de Sión, preciados y estimados más que el oro puro, ¡cómo son tenidos por vasos de barro, obra de manos de alfarero! 3Aun los monstruos marinos sacan la teta, dan de mamar á sus chiquitos: la hija de mi pueblo es cruel, como los avestruces en el desierto. 4La lengua del niño de teta, de sed se pegó á su paladar: los chiquitos pidieron pan, y no hubo quien se lo partiese. 5Los que comían delicadamente, asolados fueron en las calles; los que se criaron en carmesí, abrazaron los estercoleros. 6Y aumentóse la iniquidad de la hija de mi pueblo más que el pecado de Sodoma, que fué trastornada en un momento, y no asentaron sobre ella compañías. 7Sus Nazareos fueron blancos más que la nieve, más lustrosos que la leche, su compostura más rubicunda que los rubíes, más bellos que el zafiro: 8Oscura más que la negrura es la forma de ellos; no los conocen por las calles: su piel está pegada á sus huesos, seca como un palo. 9Más dichosos fueron los muertos á cuchillo que los muertos del hambre; porque éstos murieron poco á poco por falta de los frutos de la tierra. 10Las manos de las mujeres piadosas cocieron á sus hijos; fuéronles comida en el quebrantamiento de la hija de mi pueblo. 11Cumplió Jehová su enojo, derramó el ardor de su ira; y encendió fuego en Sión, que consumió sus fundamentos. 12Nunca los reyes de la tierra, ni todos los que habitan en el mundo, creyeron que el enemigo y el adversario entrara por las puertas de Jerusalem. 13Es por los pecados de sus profetas, por las maldades de sus sacerdotes, que derramaron en medio de ella la sangre de los justos. 14Titubearon como ciegos en las calles, fueron contaminados en sangre, de modo que no pudiesen tocar á sus vestiduras. 15Apartaos ¡inmundos!, les gritaban, Apartaos, apartaos, no toquéis. Cuando huyeron y fueron dispersos, dijeron entre las gentes: Nunca más morarán aquí. 16La ira de Jehová los apartó, no los mirará más: no respetaron la faz de los sacerdotes, ni tuvieron compasión de los viejos. 17Aun nos han desfallecido nuestros ojos tras nuestro vano socorro: en nuestra esperanza aguardamos gente que no puede salvar. 18Cazaron nuestros pasos, que no anduviésemos por nuestras calles: acercóse nuestro fin, cumpliéronse nuestros días; porque nuestro fin vino. 19Ligeros fueron nuestros perseguidores más que las águilas del cielo: sobre los montes nos persiguieron, en el desierto nos pusieron emboscadas. 20El resuello de nuestras narices, el ungido de Jehová, de quien habíamos dicho: A su sombra tendremos vida entre las gentes: fué preso en sus hoyos. 21Gózate y alégrate, hija de Edom, la que habitas en tierra de Hus: aun hasta ti pasará el cáliz; embriagarte has, y vomitarás. 22Cumplido es tu castigo, oh hija de Sión: nunca más te hará trasportar. Visitará tu iniquidad, oh hija de Edom; descubrirá tus pecados.
1How the gold has become dim! The most pure gold has changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street. 2The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter! 3Even the jackals draw out the breast, they nurse their young ones: The daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. 4The tongue of the nursing child clings to the roof of his mouth for thirst: The young children ask bread, and no man breaks it to them. 5Those who fed delicately are desolate in the streets: Those who were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills. 6For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, That was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands were laid on her. 7Her nobles were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk; They were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was as of sapphire. 8Their appearance is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: Their skin clings to their bones; it is withered, it has become like a stick. 9Those who are killed with the sword are better than those who are killed with hunger; For these pine away, stricken through, for want of the fruits of the field. 10The hands of the pitiful women have boiled their own children; They were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people. 11Yahweh has accomplished his wrath, he has poured out his fierce anger; He has kindled a fire in Zion, which has devoured its foundations. 12The kings of the earth didn’t believe, neither all the inhabitants of the world, That the adversary and the enemy would enter into the gates of Jerusalem. 13It is because of the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, That have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her. 14They wander as blind men in the streets, they are polluted with blood, So that men can’t touch their garments. 15Depart! they cried to them, Unclean! depart, depart, don’t touch! When they fled away and wandered, men said among the nations, They shall not live here any more. 16Yahweh’s anger has scattered them; he will no more regard them: They didn’t respect the persons of the priests, they didn’t favor the elders. 17Our eyes still fail, looking in vain for our help: In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save. 18They hunt our steps, so that we can’t go in our streets: Our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end has come. 19Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the sky: They chased us on the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness. 20The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Yahweh, was taken in their pits; Of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations. 21Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, that dwell in the land of Uz: The cup shall pass through to you also; you shall be drunken, and shall make yourself naked. 22The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, daughter of Zion; he will no more carry you away into captivity: He will visit your iniquity, daughter of Edom; he will uncover your sins.

Zelfs laten de zeekalveren de borsten neder, zij zogen hun welpen; maar de dochter mijns volks is als een wrede geworden, gelijk de struisen in de woestijn. 4Daleth. De tong van het zoogkind kleeft aan zijn gehemelte van dorst; de kinderkens eisen brood, er is niemand, die het hun mededeelt. 5He. Die lekkernijen aten, versmachten nu op de straten; die in karmozijn opgetrokken zijn, omhelzen den drek. 6Vau. En de ongerechtigheid der dochter mijns volks is groter dan de zonden van Sodom, dat als in een ogenblik omgekeerd werd, en geen handen hadden arbeid over haar. 7Zain. Haar bijzondersten waren reiner dan de sneeuw, zij waren witter dan melk; zij waren roder van lichaam dan robijnen, gladder dan een saffier. 8Cheth. Maar nu is hun gedaante verduisterd van zwartigheid, men kent hen niet op de straten; hun huid kleeft aan hun beenderen, zij is verdord, zij is geworden als een hout. 9Teth. De HEERE heeft Zijn grimmigheid volbracht, Hij heeft de hittigheid Zijns toorns uitgestort; en Hij heeft te Sion een vuur aangestoken, hetwelk haar fondamenten verteerd heeft. 12Lamed. De koningen der aarde zouden het niet geloofd hebben, noch al de inwoners der wereld, dat de tegenpartijder en vijand tot de poorten van Jeruzalem zou ingaan. 13Mem. Het is vanwege de zonden harer profeten, en de misdaden harer priesteren, die in het midden van haar het bloed der rechtvaardigen vergoten hebben. 14Nun. Zij zwierven als blinden op de straten, zij waren met bloed besmet, zodat men niet kon zien, of men raakte hun klederen aan. 15Samech. Zij riepen tot hen: Wijkt, hier is een onreine wijkt, wijkt, roert niet aan! Zekerlijk, zij zijn weggevlogen, ja, weggezworven; zij zeiden onder de heidenen: Zij zullen er niet langer wonen. 16Pe. Des HEEREN aangezicht heeft ze verdeeld. Hij zal ze voortaan niet meer aanzien; zij hebben het aangezicht der priesteren niet geeerd, zij hebben den ouden geen genade bewezen. 17Ain. Nog bezweken ons onze ogen, ziende naar onze ijdele hulp; wij gaapten met ons gapen op een volk, dat niet kon verlossen. 18Tsade. Zij hebben onze gangen nagespeurd, dat wij op onze straten niet gaan konden; ons einde is genaderd, onze dagen zijn vervuld, ja, ons einde is gekomen. 19Koph. Onze vervolgers zijn sneller geweest dan de arenden des hemels; zij hebben ons op de bergen hittiglijk vervolgd, in de woestijn hebben zij ons lagen gelegd. 20Resch. De adem onzer neuzen, de gezalfde des HEEREN, is gevangen in hun groeven; van welken wij zeiden: Wij zullen onder zijn schaduw leven onder de heidenen! 21Schin. Wees vrolijk, en verblijd u, gij dochter Edoms, die in het land Uz woont! doch de beker zal ook tot u komen, gij zult dronken worden, en ontbloot worden. 22Thau. Uw ongerechtigheid heeft een einde, o gij dochter Sions! Hij zal u niet meer gevankelijk doen wegvoeren; maar uw ongerechtigheid, o gij dochter Edoms! zal Hij bezoeken; Hij zal uw zonden ontdekken.
