1Παροιμίαι Σολομώντος, υιού του Δαβίδ, βασιλέως του Ισραήλ, 2διά να γνωρίση τις σοφίαν και παιδείαν, διά να νοήση λόγους φρονήσεως, 3διά να λάβη διδασκαλίαν συνέσεως, δικαιοσύνης και κρίσεως και ευθύτητος, 4διά να δώση νόησιν εις τους απλούς, και εις τον νέον μάθησιν και διάγνωσιν. 5Ο σοφός ακούων θέλει γείνει σοφώτερος, και ο νοήμων θέλει αποκτήσει επιστήμην κυβερνήσεως· 6ώστε να εννοή παροιμίαν και σκοτεινόν λόγον, ρήσεις σοφών και αινίγματα αυτών. 7Αρχή σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου· οι άφρονες καταφρονούσι την σοφίαν και την διδασκαλίαν. 8Άκουε, υιέ μου, την διδασκαλίαν του πατρός σου, και μη απορρίψης τον νόμον της μητρός σου. 9Διότι ταύτα θέλουσιν είσθαι στέφανος χαρίτων εις την κορυφήν σου και περιδέραιον περί τον τράχηλόν σου. 10Υιέ μου, εάν θελήσωσιν οι αμαρτωλοί να σε δελεάσωσι, μη θελήσης· 11εάν είπωσιν, Ελθέ μεθ' ημών, ας ενεδρεύσωμεν δι' αίμα, ας επιβουλευθώμεν αναιτίως τον αθώον, 12Ας καταπίωμεν αυτούς ζώντας, ως ο άδης, και ολοκλήρους ως τους καταβαίνοντας εις τον λάκκον· 13θέλομεν ευρεί παν πολύτιμον αγαθόν, θέλομεν γεμίσει τους οίκους ημών από λαφύρων· 14θες τον κλήρόν σου μεταξύ ημών, εν βαλάντιον ας ήναι εις πάντας ημάς· 15υιέ μου, μη περιπατήσης εν οδώ μετ' αυτών· άπεχε τον πόδα σου από των τρίβων αυτών· 16διότι οι πόδες αυτών τρέχουσιν εις το κακόν, και σπεύδουσιν εις το να χύσωσιν αίμα. 17Διότι ματαίως εξαπλόνεται δίκτυον έμπροσθεν των οφθαλμών παντός πτερωτού. 18Διότι ούτοι ενεδρεύουσι κατά του ιδίου αυτών αίματος, επιβουλεύονται τας εαυτών ψυχάς· 19Τοιαύται είναι αι οδοί παντός πλεονέκτου· η πλεονεξία αφαιρεί την ζωήν των κυριευομένων υπ' αυτής. 20Η σοφία φωνάζει έξω, εκπέμπει την φωνήν αυτής εν ταις πλατείαις· 21Κράζει επί κεφαλής των αγορών, εν ταις εισόδοις των πυλών· απαγγέλλει τους λόγους αυτής διά της πόλεως, λέγουσα, 22Έως πότε, μωροί, θέλετε αγαπά την μωρίαν, και οι χλευασταί θέλουσιν ηδύνεσθαι εις τους χλευασμούς αυτών, και οι άφρονες θέλουσι μισεί την γνώσιν; 23Επιστρέψατε προς τους ελέγχους μου· ιδού, εγώ θέλω εκχέει το πνεύμά μου εφ' υμάς, θέλω σας κάμει να νοήσητε τους λόγους μου. 24Επειδή εγώ έκραζον, και σεις δεν υπηκούετε· εξέτεινον την χείρα μου, και ουδείς προσείχεν· 25Αλλά κατεφρονείτε πάσας τας συμβουλάς μου και τους ελέγχους μου δεν εδέχεσθε· 26διά τούτο και εγώ θέλω επιγελάσει εις τον όλεθρόν σας· θέλω καταχαρή, όταν επέλθη ο φόβος σας. 27Όταν ο φόβος σας επέλθη ως ερήμωσις και η καταστροφή σας εφορμήση ως ανεμοστρόβιλος, όταν η θλίψις και η στενοχωρία έλθωσιν εφ' υμάς· 28τότε θέλουσι με επικαλεσθή, αλλά δεν θέλω αποκριθή· επιμόνως θέλουσι με εκζητήσει, αλλά δεν θέλουσι με ευρεί. 29Διότι εμίσησαν την γνώσιν και τον φόβον του Κυρίου δεν εξέλεξαν· 30δεν ηθέλησαν τας συμβουλάς μου· κατεφρόνησαν πάντας τους ελέγχους μου· 31διά τούτο θέλουσι φάγει από των καρπών της οδού αυτών και θέλουσι χορτασθή από των κακοβουλιών αυτών. 32Διότι η αποστασία των μωρών θέλει θανατώσει αυτούς, και η αμεριμνησία των αφρόνων θέλει αφανίσει αυτούς. 33Όστις όμως ακούει εμού, θέλει κατοικήσει εν ασφαλεία· και θέλει ησυχάζει, μη φοβούμενος κακόν.
1The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel: 2to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding; 3to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; 4to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man: 5that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel: 6to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise. 7The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. 8My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching: 9for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck. 10My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent. 11If they say, “Come with us, Let’s lay in wait for blood; let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; 12let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit. 13We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder. 14You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse.” 15My son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path, 16for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood. 17For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird: 18but these lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives. 19So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners. 20Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares. 21She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words: 22“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge? 23Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you. 24Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention; 25but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof; 26I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you; 27when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come on you. 28Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me; 29because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh. 30They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof. 31Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes. 32For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them. 33But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”
1De spreuken van Salomo, den zoon van David, den koning van Israel, 2Om wijsheid en tucht te weten; om te verstaan redenen des verstands; 3Om aan te nemen onderwijs van goed verstand, gerechtigheid, en recht, en billijkheden; 4Om den slechten kloekzinnigheid te geven, den jongeling wetenschap en bedachtzaamheid. 5Die wijs is, zal horen, en zal in lere toenemen; en die verstandig is, zal wijzen raad bekomen. 6Om te verstaan een spreuk en de uitlegging, de woorden der wijzen en hun raadselen. 7De vrees des HEEREN is het beginsel der wetenschap; de dwazen verachten wijsheid en tucht. 8Mijn zoon! hoor de tucht uws vaders, en verlaat de leer uwer moeder niet; 9Want zij zullen uw hoofd een aangenaam toevoegsel zijn, en ketenen aan uw hals. 10Mijn zoon! indien de zondaars u aanlokken, bewillig niet; 11Indien zij zeggen: Ga met ons, laat ons loeren op bloed, ons versteken tegen den onschuldige, zonder oorzaak; 12Laat ons hen levend verslinden, als het graf; ja, geheel en al, gelijk die in den kuil nederdalen; 13Alle kostelijk goed zullen wij vinden, onze huizen zullen wij met roof vullen. 14Gij zult uw lot midden onder ons werpen; wij zullen allen een buidel hebben. 15Mijn zoon! wandel niet met hen op den weg; weer uw voet van hun pad. 16Want hun voeten lopen ten boze; en zij haasten zich om bloed te storten. 17Zekerlijk, het net wordt tevergeefs gespreid voor de ogen van allerlei gevogelte; 18En deze loeren op hun eigen bloed, en versteken zich tegen hun zielen. 19Zo zijn de paden van een iegelijk, die gierigheid pleegt; zij zal de ziel van haar meester vangen. 20De opperste Wijsheid roept overluid daar buiten; Zij verheft haar stem op de straten. 21Zij roept in het voorste der woelingen; aan de deuren der poorten spreekt Zij Haar redenen in de stad; 22Gij slechten! hoe lang zult gij de slechtigheid beminnen, en de spotters voor zich de spotternij begeren, en de zotten wetenschap haten? 23Keert u tot Mijn bestraffing; ziet, Ik zal Mijn Geest ulieden overvloediglijk uitstorten; Ik zal Mijn woorden u bekend maken. 24Dewijl Ik geroepen heb, en gijlieden geweigerd hebt; Mijn hand uitgestrekt heb, en er niemand was, die opmerkte; 25En gij al Mijn raad verworpen, en Mijn bestraffing niet gewild hebt; 26Zo zal Ik ook in ulieder verderf lachen; Ik zal spotten, wanneer uw vreze komt. 27Wanneer uw vreze komt gelijk een verwoesting, en uw verderf aankomt als een wervelwind; wanneer u benauwdheid en angst overkomt; 28Dan zullen zij tot Mij roepen, maar Ik zal niet antwoorden; zij zullen Mij vroeg zoeken, maar zullen Mij niet vinden; 29Daarom, dat zij de wetenschap gehaat hebben, en de vreze des HEEREN niet hebben verkoren. 30Zij hebben in Mijn raad niet bewilligd; al Mijn bestraffingen hebben zij versmaad; 31Zo zullen zij eten van de vrucht van hun weg, en zich verzadigen met hun raadslagen. 32Want de afkering der slechten zal hen doden, en de voorspoed der zotten zal hen verderven. 33Maar die naar Mij hoort, zal zeker wonen, en hij zal gerust zijn van de vreze des kwaads.
