Και έστρεψαν εκ του λαού εικοσιδύο χιλιάδες· και έμειναν δέκα χιλιάδες. 4Και είπε Κύριος προς τον Γεδεών, Ο λαός είναι έτι πολύς· καταβίβασον αυτούς εις το ύδωρ, και εκεί θέλω εκκαθαρίσει αυτούς εις σέ· και περί ούτινος σοι είπω, Ούτος θέλει ελθεί μετά σου, αυτός θέλει ελθεί μετά σού· και περί ούτινος σοι είπω, Ούτος δεν θέλει ελθεί μετά σου, αυτός δεν θέλει ελθεί. 5Και κατεβίβασε τον λαόν εις το ύδωρ· και είπεν ο Κύριος προς τον Γεδεών, Πας όστις λάψη με την γλώσσαν αυτού από του ύδατος, καθώς λάπτει ο σκύλος, τούτον θέλεις στήσει χωριστά· και πας όστις κάμψη τα γόνατα αυτού διά να πίη. 6Και ο αριθμός των λαπτόντων με την χείρα αυτών προς το στόμα αυτών ήτο τριακόσιοι άνδρες· άπαν δε το επίλοιπον του λαού έκαμψε τα γόνατα αυτών διά να πίωσιν ύδωρ. 7Και είπεν ο Κύριος προς τον Γεδεών, Διά των τριακοσίων ανδρών, οίτινες έλαψαν, θέλω σώσει υμάς, και θέλω παραδώσει τους Μαδιανίτας εις την χείρα σου· άπαν δε το επίλοιπον του λαού ας υπάγωσιν έκαστος εις τον τόπον αυτού. 8Έλαβε λοιπόν ο λαός τας τροφάς εις τας χείρας αυτών και τας σάλπιγγας αυτών· και απέπεμψεν άπαν το επίλοιπον του Ισραήλ, έκαστον εις την σκηνήν αυτού, και εκράτησε τους τριακοσίους άνδρας. Και το στρατόπεδον του Μαδιάμ ήτο υποκάτω αυτών εν τη κοιλάδι. 9Και την αυτήν νύκτα είπε προς αυτόν ο Κύριος, Σηκώθητι, κατάβα εις το στρατόπεδον· διότι παρέδωκα αυτό εις την χείρα σου· 10αλλ' εάν φοβήσαι να καταβής, κατάβα συ και ο Φουρά ο δούλός σου εις το στρατόπεδον· 11και θέλεις ακούσει τι λέγουσι· και μετά ταύτα αι χείρές σου θέλουσιν ενδυναμωθή, και θέλεις καταβή εις το στρατόπεδον. Και κατέβη αυτός μετά του Φουρά του δούλου αυτού έως της προφυλακής του στρατοπέδου. 12Ο δε Μαδιάμ και ο Αμαλήκ και πάντες οι κάτοικοι της ανατολής ήσαν εξηπλωμένοι εν τη κοιλάδι ως ακρίδες κατά το πλήθος· και αι κάμηλοι αυτών αναρίθμητοι ως η άμμος παρά το χείλος της θαλάσσης κατά το πλήθος. 13Και ότε ήλθεν ο Γεδεών, ιδού, άνθρωπός τις διηγείτο προς τον πλησίον αυτού όνειρον και έλεγεν, Ιδού, ωνειρεύθην όνειρον και ιδού, ψωμίον κρίθινον κυλιόμενον εν τω στρατοπέδω του Μαδιάμ ήλθεν εις τας σκηνάς και εκτύπησεν αυτάς, και έπεσον· και ανέτρεψεν αυτάς, και έπεσον αι σκηναί. 14Και απεκρίθη ο πλησίον αυτού και είπε, Τούτο δεν είναι, ειμή η ρομφαία του Γεδεών, υιού του Ιωάς, ανδρός Ισραηλίτου· ο Θεός παρέδωκεν εις την χείρα αυτού τον Μαδιάμ και άπαν το στρατόπεδον. 15Και ως ήκουσεν ο Γεδεών την διήγησιν του ονείρου και την εξήγησιν αυτού, προσεκύνησε και επέστρεψεν εις το στρατόπεδον του Ισραήλ και είπε, Σηκώθητε· διότι ο Κύριος παρέδωκεν εις την χείρα σας το στρατόπεδον του Μαδιάμ. 16Και διήρεσε τους τριακοσίους άνδρας εις τρία σώματα, και έδωκε σάλπιγγας εις τας χείρας πάντων τούτων και υδρίας κενάς και λαμπάδας εν ταις υδρίαις. 17Και είπε προς αυτούς, Βλέπετε προς εμέ και κάμετε παρομοίως· και ιδού, όταν εγώ φθάσω εις το άκρον του στρατοπέδου, καθώς εγώ κάμω, ούτω θέλετε κάμει· 18όταν σαλπίσω διά της σάλπιγγος, εγώ και πάντες οι μετ' εμού, τότε θέλετε σαλπίσει και σεις διά των σαλπίγγων κύκλω παντός του στρατοπέδου και θέλετε ειπεί, Ρομφαία του Κυρίου και του Γεδεών. 19Ο Γεδεών λοιπόν και οι εκατόν άνδρες οι μετ' αυτού ήλθον εις το άκρον του στρατοπέδου περί τας αρχάς της μέσης φυλακής· μόλις είχον καταστήσει τους φύλακας· και εσάλπισαν διά των σαλπίγγων και συνέτριψαν τας υδρίας τας εις τας χείρας αυτών. 20Και τα τρία σώματα εσάλπισαν διά των σαλπίγγων και συνέτριψαν τας υδρίας και εκράτουν τας λαμπάδας εις τας αριστεράς αυτών χείρας και τας σάλπιγγας εις τας δεξιάς αυτών χείρας διά να σαλπίζωσι· και ανέκραζον, Ρομφαία του Κυρίου και του Γεδεών. 21Και εστάθη έκαστος εν τω τόπω αυτού κύκλω του στρατοπέδου· και άπαν το στράτευμα διέτρεχε και εφώναζε και έφευγε. 22Και οι τριακόσιοι εσάλπισαν διά των σαλπίγγων· και έστρεψεν ο Κύριος καθ' όλον το στρατόπεδον την ρομφαίαν εκάστου εναντίον του πλησίον αυτού· και το στράτευμα έφυγεν εις Βαιθ-ασεττά προς Ζερεράθ, έως του χείλους του Αβέλ-μεολά προς Ταβάθ. 23Και συνήχθησαν οι άνδρες Ισραήλ από Νεφθαλί και από Ασήρ και από παντός του Μανασσή, και κατεδίωξαν οπίσω του Μαδιάμ. 24Και απέστειλεν ο Γεδεών μηνυτάς προς άπαν το όρος Εφραΐμ, λέγων, Κατάβητε διά να συναντήσητε τον Μαδιάμ, και προκαταλάβετε προ αυτών τα ύδατα έως Βαιθ-βαρά και τον Ιορδάνην. Τότε συνήχθησαν πάντες οι άνδρες Εφραΐμ και προκατέλαβον τα ύδατα έως Βαιθ-βαρά και τον Ιορδάνην. 25Και συνέλαβον δύο αρχηγούς του Μαδιάμ, τον Ωρήβ και τον Ζήβ· και εθανάτωσαν τον Ωρήβ επί του βράχου Ωρήβ, τον δε Ζηβ εθανάτωσαν επί του ληνού Ζήβ· και κατεδίωξαν τον Μαδιάμ και έφεραν την κεφαλήν του Ωρήβ και του Ζηβ προς τον Γεδεών εκ του πέραν του Ιορδάνου.
1Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. 2Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’” Twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained. 4Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. It shall be, that of whom I tell you, ‘This shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whoever I tell you, ‘This shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5So he brought down the people to the water; and Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall set him by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.” 6The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water. 7Yahweh said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.” 8So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley. 9That same night, Yahweh said to him, “Arise, go down into the camp; for I have delivered it into your hand. 10But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp: 11and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands will be strengthened to go down into the camp.” Then went he down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp. 12The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is on the seashore for multitude. 13When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow; and he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” 14His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.” 15It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshiped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise; for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!” 16He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers. 17He said to them, “Watch me, and do likewise. Behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do. 18When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’” 19So Gideon, and the hundred men who were with him, came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands. 20The three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon!” 21They each stood in his place around the camp; and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight. 22They blew the three hundred trumpets, and Yahweh set every man’s sword against his fellow, and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. 23The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian. 24Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan. 25They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the wine press of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

Toen zeide de HEERE tot Gideon: Al wie met zijn tong uit het water zal lekken, gelijk als een hond zou lekken, dien zult gij alleen stellen; desgelijks al wie op zijn knieen zal bukken om te drinken. 6Toen was het getal dergenen, die met hun hand tot hun mond gelekt hadden, driehonderd man; maar alle overigen des volks hadden op hun knieen gebukt, om water te drinken. 7En de HEERE zeide tot Gideon: Door deze driehonderd mannen, die gelekt hebben, zal Ik ulieden verlossen, en de Midianieten in uw hand geven; daarom laat al dat volk weggaan, een ieder naar zijn plaats. 8En het volk nam den teerkost in hun hand, en hun bazuinen; en hij liet al die mannen van Israel gaan, een iegelijk naar zijn tent; maar die driehonderd man behield hij. En hij had het heirleger der Midianieten beneden in het dal. 9En het geschiedde in denzelven nacht, dat de HEERE tot hem zeide: Sta op, ga henen af in het leger, want Ik heb het in uw hand gegeven. 10Vreest gij dan nog af te gaan, zo ga af, gij, en Pura, uw jongen, naar het leger. 11En gij zult horen, wat zij zullen spreken, en daarna zullen uw handen gesterkt worden, dat gij aftrekken zult in het leger. Toen ging hij af, met Pura, zijn jongen, tot het uiterste der schildwachten, die in het leger waren. 12En de Midianieten, en Amalekieten, en al de kinderen van het oosten, lagen in het dal, gelijk sprinkhanen in menigte, en hun kemelen waren ontelbaar, gelijk het zand, dat aan den oever der zee is, in menigte. 13Toen nu Gideon aankwam, ziet, zo was er een man, die zijn metgezel een droom vertelde, en zeide: Zie, ik heb een droom gedroomd, en zie, een geroost gerstebrood wentelde zich in het leger der Midianieten, en het kwam tot aan de tent, en sloeg haar, dat zij viel, en keerde haar om, het onderste boven, dat de tent er lag. 14En zijn metgezel antwoordde, en zeide: Dit is niet anders, dan het zwaard van Gideon, de zoon van Joas, de Israelietischen man; God heeft de Midianieten en dit ganse leger in zijn hand gegeven. 15En het geschiedde, als Gideon de vertelling dezes drooms, en zijn uitlegging hoorde, zo aanbad hij; en hij keerde weder tot het leger van Israel, en zeide: Maakt u op, want de HEERE heeft het leger der Midianieten in ulieder hand gegeven. 16En hij deelde de driehonderd man in drie hopen; en hij gaf een iegelijk een bazuin in zijn hand, en ledige kruiken, en fakkelen in het midden der kruiken. 17En hij zeide tot hen: Ziet naar mij en doet alzo; en ziet, als ik zal komen aan het uiterste des legers, zo zal het geschieden, gelijk als ik zal doen, alzo zult gij doen. 18Als ik met de bazuin zal blazen, ik en allen, die met mij zijn, dan zult gijlieden ook met de bazuin blazen, rondom het ganse leger, en gij zult zeggen: Voor den HEERE en voor Gideon! 19Alzo kwam Gideon, en honderd mannen, die met hem waren, in het uiterste des legers, in het begin van de middelste nachtwaak, als zij maar even de wachters gesteld hadden; en zij bliezen met de bazuinen, ook sloegen zij de kruiken, die in hun hand waren, in stukken. 20Alzo bliezen de drie hopen met de bazuinen, en braken de kruiken; en zij hielden met de linkerhand de fakkelen, en met hun rechterhand de bazuinen om te blazen; en zij riepen: Het zwaard van den HEERE, en van Gideon! 21En zij stonden, een iegelijk in zijn plaats, rondom het leger. Toen verliep het ganse leger, en zij schreeuwden en vloden. 22Als de driehonderd met de bazuinen bliezen, zo zette de HEERE het zwaard des een tegen den anderen, en dat in het ganse leger; en het leger vluchtte tot Beth-Sitta toe naar Tseredath, tot aan de grens van Abel-Mehola, boven Tabbath. 23Toen werden de mannen van Israel bijeengeroepen, uit Nafthali, en uit Aser, en uit gans Manasse; en zij jaagden de Midianieten achterna. 24Ook zond Gideon boden in het ganse gebergte van Efraim, zeggende: Komt af de Midianieten tegemoet, en beneemt hunlieden de wateren, tot aan Beth-bara, te weten de Jordaan; alzo werd alle man van Efraim bijeengeroepen, en zij benamen hun de wateren tot aan Beth-bara, en de Jordaan. 25En zij vingen twee vorsten der Midianieten, Oreb en Zeeb, en doodden Oreb op den rotssteen Oreb, en Zeeb doodden zij in de perskuip van Zeeb, en vervolgden de Midianieten; en zij brachten de hoofden van Oreb en Zeeb tot Gideon, over de Jordaan.
