1Και έπραξαν οι υιοί Ισραήλ πονηρά ενώπιον του Κυρίου· και παρέδωκεν αυτούς ο Κύριος εις την χείρα του Μαδιάμ επτά έτη. 2Και κατίσχυσεν χειρ του Μαδιάμ επί τον Ισραήλ· εξ αιτίας των Μαδιανιτών έκαμον εις εαυτούς οι υιοί Ισραήλ τας φωλεάς εκείνας, τας επί των ορέων, και τα σπήλαια και τα οχυρώματα. 3Και ότε έσπερνεν ο Ισραήλ, ανέβαινον οι Μαδιανίται και οι Αμαληκίται και οι κάτοικοι της ανατολής και ήρχοντο εναντίον αυτού· 4και στρατοπεδεύοντες εναντίον αυτών διέφθειρον τα γεννήματα της γης, έως της εισόδου Γάζης, και δεν άφινον ζωοτροφίαν εις τον Ισραήλ, ούτε πρόβατον ούτε βουν ούτε όνον. 5Διότι ανέβαινον αυτοί και τα ποίμνια αυτών και ήρχοντο μετά των σκηνών αυτών, πολυάριθμοι ως ακρίδες· αναρίθμητοι ήσαν και αυτοί και αι κάμηλοι αυτών· και εισήρχοντο εις την γην διά να φθείρωσιν αυτήν. 6Και επτώχευσε σφόδρα ο Ισραήλ εξ αιτίας των Μαδιανιτών· διά τούτο οι υιοί Ισραήλ εβόησαν προς τον Κύριον. 7Και ότε εβόησαν προς τον Κύριον οι υιοί Ισραήλ διά τους Μαδιανίτας, 8τότε απέστειλεν ο Κύριος άνδρα προφήτην προς τους υιούς Ισραήλ, και είπε προς αυτούς, Ούτω λέγει Κύριος ο Θεός του Ισραήλ· Εγώ ανεβίβασα υμάς εξ Αιγύπτου και εξήγαγον υμάς εξ οίκου δουλείας, 9και ελύτρωσα υμάς εκ χειρός των Αιγυπτίων και εκ χειρός πάντων των καταθλιβόντων υμάς, και εξεδίωξα αυτούς απ' έμπροσθεν υμών και έδωκα εις εσάς την γην αυτών· 10και είπα προς εσάς, Εγώ είμαι Κύριος ο Θεός σας· δεν θέλετε σεβασθή τους θεούς των Αμορραίων, εν τη γη των οποίων κατοικείτε· και δεν υπηκούσατε εις την φωνήν μου. 11Και ήλθεν άγγελος Κυρίου και εκάθισεν υπό την δρυν την εν Οφρά, την του Ιωάς του Αβί-εζερίτου· και Γεδεών ο υιός αυτού εκοπάνιζε σίτον εν τω ληνώ, διά να κρύψη αυτόν από των Μαδιανιτών. 12Και εφάνη εις αυτόν άγγελος Κυρίου και είπε προς αυτόν, Ο Κύριος μετά σου, δυνατέ εν ισχύϊ. 13Και είπε προς αυτόν ο Γεδεών, Ω κύριέ μου, αν ο Κύριος ήναι μεθ' ημών, διά τι λοιπόν εύρηκαν ημάς πάντα ταύτα; και που είναι πάντα τα θαυμάσια αυτού, τα οποία διηγήθησαν εις ημάς οι πατέρες ημών, λέγοντες, Δεν ανεβίβασεν ημάς ο Κύριος εξ Αιγύπτου; αλλά τώρα εγκατέλιπεν ημάς ο Κύριος και παρέδωκεν ημάς εις τας χείρας των Μαδιανιτών. 14Και εμβλέψας προς αυτόν ο Κύριος είπεν, Ύπαγε εν τη δυνάμει σου ταύτη, και θέλεις σώσει τον Ισραήλ εκ της χειρός του Μαδιάμ· δεν σε απέστειλα εγώ; 15Ο δε είπε προς αυτόν, Ω κύριέ μου, με τι θέλω σώσει τον Ισραήλ; ιδού, η οικογένειά μου είναι η ταπεινοτέρα μεταξύ του Μανασσή, και εγώ ο μικρότερος εν τω οίκω του πατρός μου. 16Και είπε προς αυτόν ο Κύριος, Αλλ' εγώ θέλω είσθαι μετά σου και θέλεις πατάξει τους Μαδιανίτας ως άνδρα ένα. 17Ο δε είπε προς αυτόν, Εάν λοιπόν εύρηκα χάριν εις τους οφθαλμούς σου, δείξόν μοι σημείον ότι συ είσαι ο λαλών μετ' εμού. 18Μη αναχωρήσης εντεύθεν, δέομαι, εωσού έλθω προς σε και εκφέρω την προσφοράν μου και θέσω ενώπιόν σου. Ο δε είπε, Θέλω περιμείνει εωσού επιστρέψης. 19Και εισήλθεν ο Γεδεών και ητοίμασεν ερίφιον εξ αιγών και άζυμα ενός εφά αλεύρου· το μεν κρέας έθεσεν εις κάνιστρον, τον δε ζωμόν έβαλεν εις χύτραν, και έφερεν έξω προς αυτόν υπό την δρυν και προσέφερε. 20Και είπε προς αυτόν ο άγγελος του Θεού, Λάβε το κρέας και τα άζυμα και θες επί ταύτην την πέτραν, και τον ζωμόν επίχεε. Και έκαμεν ούτω. 21Και εξέτεινεν ο άγγελος του Κυρίου το άκρον της ράβδου, την οποίαν είχεν εν τη χειρί αυτού, και ήγγισε το κρέας και τα άζυμα· και ανέβη πυρ εκ της πέτρας και κατέφαγε το κρέας και τα άζυμα. Τότε απήλθεν ο άγγελος του Κυρίου από των οφθαλμών αυτού. 22Και ιδών ο Γεδεών ότι ήτο άγγελος Κυρίου, είπεν ο Γεδεών, Οίμοι, Κύριε Θεέ· διότι είδον τον άγγελον του Κυρίου πρόσωπον προς πρόσωπον. 23Και είπε προς αυτόν ο Κύριος, Ειρήνη σοι· μη φοβού· δεν θέλεις αποθάνει. 24Και ωκοδόμησεν εκεί ο Γεδεών θυσιαστήριον εις τον Κύριον και ωνόμασεν αυτό Ιεοβά-σαλώμ· έως της ημέρας ταύτης είναι εν Οφρά των Αβί-εζεριτών. 25Και την αυτήν νύκτα είπεν ο Κύριος προς αυτόν, Λάβε τον βουν του πατρός σου και τον δεύτερον βουν τον επταετή, και κατεδάφισον τον βωμόν του Βάαλ, τον οποίον έχει ο πατήρ σου, και το άλσος το πλησίον αυτού κατάκοψον· 26και οικοδόμησον θυσιαστήριον εις Κύριον τον Θεόν σου επί της κορυφής της πέτρας ταύτης, κατά το διατεταγμένον· και λάβε τον δεύτερον βουν και πρόσφερε ολοκαύτωμα με τα ξύλα του άλσους, το οποίον θέλεις κατακόψει. 27Και έλαβεν ο Γεδεών δέκα άνδρας εκ των δούλων αυτού και έκαμε καθώς είπε προς αυτόν ο Κύριος· και επειδή εφοβήθη τον οίκον του πατρός αυτού και τους ανθρώπους της πόλεως, να κάμη τούτο την ημέραν, έκαμεν αυτό την νύκτα. 28Και ότε οι άνθρωποι της πόλεως εξηγέρθησαν το πρωΐ, ιδού, ήτο κρημνισμένος ο βωμός του Βάαλ, και το άλσος το πλησίον αυτού κατακεκομμένον, και ο δεύτερος βους ώλοκαυτωμένος επί το θυσιαστήριον το ωκοδομημένον. 29Και είπεν ο εις προς τον άλλον, Τις έκαμε το πράγμα τούτο; Και εξετάσαντες και ανερευνήσαντες είπον, Ο Γεδεών ο υιός του Ιωάς έκαμε το πράγμα τούτο. 30Τότε οι άνθρωποι της πόλεως είπον προς τον Ιωάς, Έκβαλε τον υιόν σου διά να θανατωθή, επειδή εκρήμνισε τον βωμόν του Βάαλ και επειδή κατέκοψε το άλσος το πλησίον αυτού. 31Και είπεν ο Ιωάς προς πάντας τους εξανισταμένους εναντίον αυτού, Μήπως σεις θέλετε διεκδικήσει υπέρ του Βάαλ; ή σεις θέλετε σώσει αυτόν; όστις διεκδικήση υπέρ αυτού θέλει θανατωθή έως πρωΐας· εάν ούτος ήναι Θεός, ας διεκδικήση υπέρ εαυτού, διότι εκρήμνισαν τον βωμόν αυτού. 32Διά τούτο ωνόμασεν αυτόν εν τη ημέρα εκείνη Ιεροβάαλ, λέγων, Ας εκδικήση κατ' αυτού ο Βάαλ, διότι εκρήμνισε τον βωμόν αυτού. 33Τότε συνήχθησαν ομού πάντες οι Μαδιανίται και οι Αμαληκίται και οι κάτοικοι της ανατολής και διέβησαν και εστρατοπέδευσαν εν τη κοιλάδι Ιεζραέλ. 34Και το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου περιεχύθη επί τον Γεδεών, και εσάλπισεν εν σάλπιγγι και συνήχθησαν οι Αβί-εζερίται οπίσω αυτού. 35Και εξαπέστειλε μηνυτάς προς πάντα τον Μανασσή, και συνήχθη και αυτός οπίσω αυτού· εξαπέστειλεν έτι μηνυτάς προς τον Ασήρ και προς τον Ζαβουλών και προς τον Νεφθαλί· και ανέβησαν εις συνάντησιν αυτών. 36Και είπεν ο Γεδεών προς τον Θεόν, Εάν μέλλης να σώσης διά χειρός μου τον Ισραήλ, καθώς ελάλησας, 37ιδού, εγώ θέλω βάλει τον πόκον του μαλλίου εις το αλώνιον· εάν γείνη δρόσος μόνον επί τον πόκον, εφ' όλην δε την γην ξηρασία, τότε θέλω γνωρίσει ότι θέλεις σώσει διά χειρός μου τον Ισραήλ, καθώς ελάλησας. 38Και έγεινεν ούτω· διότι σηκωθείς την επαύριον το πρωΐ, επίεσε τον πόκον και εξέθλιψε δρόσον εκ του πόκου, λεκάνην πλήρη ύδατος. 39Και είπεν ο Γεδεών προς τον Θεόν, Ας μη εξαφθή ο θυμός σου εναντίον μου, και θέλω λαλήσει μόνον ταύτην την φοράν· ας δοκιμάσω, δέομαι, ταύτην μόνην την φοράν εν τω πόκω· ας γείνη τώρα ξηρασία μόνον επί τον πόκον, εφ' όλην δε την γην ας ήναι δρόσος. 40Και έκαμεν ο Θεός ούτω την νύκτα εκείνην· και έγεινε ξηρασία μόνον επί τον πόκον, εφ' όλην δε την γην ήτο δρόσος.
1The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years. 2The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds. 3So it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them; 4and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey. 5For they came up with their livestock and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it. 6Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to Yahweh. 7When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh because of Midian, 8Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage; 9and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land; 10and I said to you, “I am Yahweh your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not listened to my voice.’” 11Yahweh’s angel came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. 12Yahweh’s angel appeared to him, and said to him, “Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!” 13Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.” 14Yahweh looked at him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?” 15He said to him, “O Lord, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” 16Yahweh said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” 17He said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me. 18Please don’t go away, until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you.” He said, “I will wait until you come back.” 19Gideon went in, and prepared a young goat, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal. He put the meat in a basket and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it. 20The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” He did so. 21Then Yahweh’s angel stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock, and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes; and Yahweh’s angel departed out of his sight. 22Gideon saw that he was Yahweh’s angel; and Gideon said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh! Because I have seen Yahweh’s angel face to face!” 23Yahweh said to him, “Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.” 24Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it “Yahweh is Peace.” To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. 25That same night, Yahweh said to him, “Take your father’s bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it; 26and build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of this stronghold, in an orderly way, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.” 27Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him. Because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, he could not do it by day, but he did it by night. 28When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built. 29They said one to another, “Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.” 30Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.” 31Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar.” 32Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal, saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.” 33Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel. 34But the Spirit of Yahweh came on Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him. 35He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them. 36Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken, 37behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then shall I know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken.” 38It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. 39Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.” 40God did so that night: for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

En Hij zeide: Ik zal blijven, totdat gij wederkomt. 19En Gideon ging in, en bereidde een geitenbokje, en ongezuurde koeken van een efa meels; het vlees legde hij in een korf, en het sop deed hij in een pot; en hij bracht het tot Hem uit, tot onder den eik, en zette het nader. 20Doch de Engel Gods zeide tot hem: Neem het vlees en de ongezuurde koeken, en leg ze op dien rotssteen, en giet het sop uit; en hij deed alzo. 21En de Engel des HEEREN stak het uiterste van den staf uit, die in Zijn hand was, en roerde het vlees en de ongezuurde koeken aan; toen ging er vuur op uit de rots, en verteerde het vlees en de ongezuurde koeken. En de Engel des HEEREN bekwam uit zijn ogen. 22Toen zag Gideon, dat het een Engel des HEEREN was; en Gideon zeide: Ach, Heere, HEERE! daarom, omdat ik een Engel des HEEREN gezien heb van aangezicht tot aangezicht. 23Doch de HEERE zeide tot hem: Vrede zij u, vrees niet, gij zult niet sterven. 24Toen bouwde Gideon aldaar den HEERE een altaar, en noemde het: De HEERE is vrede! het is nog tot op dezen dag in Ofra der Abi-ezrieten. 25En het geschiedde in dienzelven nacht, dat de HEERE tot hem zeide: Neem een var van de ossen, die van uw vader zijn, te weten, den tweeden var, van zeven jaren; en breek af het altaar van Baal, dat van uw vader is, en houw af het bos, dat daarbij is. 26En bouw den HEERE, uw God, een altaar, op de hoogte dezer sterkte, in een bekwame plaats; en neem den tweeden var, en offer een brandoffer met het hout der hage, die gij zult hebben afgehouwen. 27Toen nam Gideon tien mannen uit zijn knechten, en deed, gelijk als de HEERE tot hem gesproken had. Doch het geschiedde, dewijl hij zijns vaders huis en de mannen van die stad vreesde, van het te doen bij dag, dat hij het deed bij nacht. 28Als nu de mannen van die stad des morgens vroeg opstonden, ziet, zo was het altaar van Baal omgeworpen, en de haag, die daarbij was, afgehouwen, en die tweede var was op het gebouwde altaar geofferd. 29Zo zeiden zij, de een tot de ander: Wie heeft dit stuk gedaan? En als zij onderzochten en navraagden, zo zeide men: Gideon, de zoon van Joas, heeft dit stuk gedaan. 30Toen zeiden de mannen van die stad tot Joas: Breng uw zoon uit, dat hij sterve, omdat hij het altaar van Baal heeft omgeworpen, en omdat hij de haag, die daarbij was, afgehouwen heeft. 31Joas daarentegen zeide tot allen, die bij hem stonden: Zult gij voor den Baal twisten; zult gij hem verlossen? Die voor hem zal twisten, zal nog dezen morgen gedood worden! Indien een hij god is, hij twiste voor zichzelven, omdat men zijn altaar heeft omgeworpen. 32Daarom noemde hij hem te dien dage Jerubbaal, zeggende: Baal twiste tegen hem, omdat hij zijn altaar heeft omgeworpen. 33Alle Midianieten nu, en Amalekieten, en de kinderen van het oosten, waren samenvergaderd, en zij trokken over, en legerden zich in het dal van Jizreel. 34Toen toog de Geest des HEEREN Gideon aan, en hij blies met de bazuin, en de Abi-ezrieten werden achter hem bijeengeroepen. 35Ook zond hij boden in gans Manasse, en die werden ook achter hem bijeengeroepen; desgelijks zond hij boden in Aser, en in Zebulon, en in Nafthali; en zij kwamen op, hun tegemoet. 36En Gideon zeide tot God: Indien Gij Israel door mijn hand zult verlossen, gelijk als Gij gesproken hebt; 37Zie, ik zal een wollen vlies op den vloer leggen; indien er dauw op het vlies alleen zal zijn, en droogte op de ganse aarde, zo zal ik weten, dat Gij Israel door mijn hand zult verlossen, gelijk als Gij gesproken hebt. 38En het geschiedde alzo; want hij stond des anderen daags vroeg op, en drukte het vlies uit, en hij wrong den dauw uit het vlies, een schaal vol waters. 39En Gideon zeide tot God: Uw toorn ontsteke niet tegen mij, dat ik alleenlijk ditmaal spreke; laat mij toch alleenlijk ditmaal met het vlies verzoeken; er zij toch droogte op het vlies alleen, en op de ganse aarde zij dauw. 40En God deed alzo in denzelven nacht; want de droogte was op het vlies alleen, en op de ganse aarde was dauw.
