1Και μετά τινά καιρόν, εν ταις ημέραις του θερισμού του σίτου επεσκέφθη ο Σαμψών την γυναίκα αυτού, φέρων ερίφιον εξ αιγών· και είπε, Θέλω εισέλθει προς την γυναίκα μου εις τον κοιτώνα. Αλλ' ο πατήρ αυτής δεν αφήκεν αυτόν να εισέλθη. 2Και είπεν ο πατήρ αυτής, Είπα κατ' εμαυτόν ότι διόλου εμίσησας αυτήν· διά τούτο έδωκα αυτήν εις τον σύντροφόν σου· η μικροτέρα αδελφή αυτής δεν είναι ώραιοτέρα αυτής; λάβε λοιπόν αυτήν αντ' εκείνης. 3Ο δε Σαμψών είπε περί αυτών, Τώρα θέλω είσθαι αθώος προς τους Φιλισταίους, αν εγώ κακοποιώ αυτούς. 4Και υπήγεν ο Σαμψών και επίασε τριακοσίας αλώπεκας, και έλαβε λαμπάδας, και έστρεψεν ουράν προς ουράν και έβαλε μίαν λαμπάδα μεταξύ των δύο ουρών εις το μέσον. 5Και ανάψας τας λαμπάδας, απέλυσεν εις τα σπαρτά των Φιλισταίων, και έκαυσε τας θημωνίας, έως και τα αθέριστα αστάχυα, έως και τας αμπέλους και ελαίας. 6Τότε οι Φιλισταίοι είπον, Τις έκαμε τούτο; Και απεκρίθησαν, Σαμψών ο γαμβρός του Θαμναθαίου· διότι έλαβε την γυναίκα αυτού και έδωκεν αυτήν εις τον σύντροφον αυτού. Και ανέβησαν οι Φιλισταίοι και έκαυσαν αυτήν και τον πατέρα αυτής εν πυρί. 7Και είπε προς αυτούς ο Σαμψών, Αν και σεις εκάμετε τούτο, εγώ όμως θέλω εκδικηθή εναντίον σας, και μετά ταύτα θέλω παύσει. 8Και επάταξεν αυτούς κνήμην και μηρόν εν σφαγή μεγάλη· και κατέβη και εκάθισεν εις το χάσμα της πέτρας Ητάμ. 9Ανέβησαν δε οι Φιλισταίοι και εστρατοπέδευσαν εν γη Ιούδα και διεχύθησαν εις Λεχί. 10Και είπον οι άνδρες Ιούδα, Διά τι ανέβητε εναντίον ημών; Οι δε απεκρίθησαν, Διά να δέσωμεν τον Σαμψών ανέβημεν, να κάμωμεν εις αυτόν ως έκαμεν εις ημάς. 11Και κατέβησαν τρεις χιλιάδες ανδρών εκ του Ιούδα εις το χάσμα της πέτρας Ητάμ και είπον προς τον Σαμψών, Δεν εξεύρεις ότι οι Φιλισταίοι εξουσιάζουσιν εφ' ημών; τι τούτο λοιπόν το οποίον έκαμες εις ημάς; Ο δε είπε προς αυτούς, Ως έκαμαν εις εμέ, ούτως έκαμον εις αυτούς. 12Και είπον προς αυτόν, Κατέβημεν να σε δέσωμεν, διά να σε παραδώσωμεν εις την χείρα των Φιλισταίων. Και είπε προς αυτούς ο Σαμψών, Ορκίσθητε προς εμέ, ότι σεις δεν θέλετε επιπέσει κατ' εμού. 13Και είπαν προς αυτόν, λέγοντες, Ουχί· αλλά θέλομεν σε δέσει δυνατά και σε παραδώσει εις την χείρα αυτών· πλην βεβαίως δεν θέλομεν σε θανατώσει. Έδεσαν λοιπόν αυτόν με δύο νέα σχοινία και ανεβίβασαν αυτόν εκ της πέτρας. 14Και ότε ήλθεν εις Λεχί, οι Φιλισταίοι αλαλάζοντες έδραμον εις συνάντησιν αυτού. Και επήλθεν επ' αυτόν Πνεύμα Κυρίου· και τα σχοινία, τα εις τους βραχίονας αυτού, έγειναν ως λινάριον το οποίον εξάπτεται εν τω πυρί, και τα δεσμά αυτού έπεσον εκ των χειρών αυτού, διεσπασμένα. 15Και εύρηκε σιαγόνα όνου νωπήν, και εκτείνας την χείρα αυτού έλαβεν αυτήν και εφόνευσε δι' αυτής χιλίους άνδρας. 16Και είπεν ο Σαμψών, Διά σιαγόνος όνου έκαμα σωρούς, σωρούς, διά σιαγόνος όνου εφόνευσα χιλίους άνδρας. 17Και αφού έπαυσε λαλών, έρριψε την σιαγόνα από της χειρός αυτού· και ωνόμασε τον τόπον εκείνον, Ραμάθ-λεχί. 18Και διψήσας σφόδρα, εβόησε προς τον Κύριον και είπε, Συ έδωκας διά χειρός του δούλου σου την μεγάλην ταύτην σωτηρίαν· και τώρα να αποθάνω υπό δίψης και να πέσω εις την χείρα των απεριτμήτων; 19Και έσχισεν ο Θεός το κοίλωμα το εν Λεχί, και εξήλθεν ύδωρ απ' αυτού· και αφού έπιεν, ανέλαβε το πνεύμα αυτού, και ανεζωοποιήθη· διά τούτο εκάλεσε το όνομα αυτού, Εν-ακκορέ, το οποίον είναι εν Λεχί έως της ημέρας ταύτης. 20Και αυτός έκρινε τον Ισραήλ εν ταις ημέραις των Φιλισταίων είκοσι έτη.
1But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat; and he said, “I will go in to my wife into the room.” But her father wouldn’t allow him to go in. 2Her father said, “I most certainly thought that you had utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Isn’t her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please take her, instead.” 3Samson said to them, “This time I will be blameless in regard of the Philistines, when I harm them.” 4Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned tail to tail, and put a torch in the midst between every two tails. 5When he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks and the standing grain, and also the olive groves. 6Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?” They said, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife, and given her to his companion.” The Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire. 7Samson said to them, “If you behave like this, surely I will be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.” 8He struck them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and lived in the cleft of the rock of Etam. 9Then the Philistines went up, and encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi. 10The men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?” They said, “We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he has done to us.” 11Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, “Don’t you know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?” He said to them, “As they did to me, so have I done to them.” 12They said to him, “We have come down to bind you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines.” Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not fall on me yourselves.” 13They spoke to him, saying, “No; but we will bind you fast, and deliver you into their hand; but surely we will not kill you.” They bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock. 14When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands dropped from off his hands. 15He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, and put out his hand, and took it, and struck a thousand men with it. 16Samson said, “With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps on heaps; with the jawbone of a donkey I have struck a thousand men.” 17When he had finished speaking, he threw the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath Lehi. 18He was very thirsty, and called on Yahweh, and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of your servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?” 19But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi, and water came out of it. When he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: therefore its name was called En Hakkore, which is in Lehi, to this day. 20He judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

En zij zeiden: Wij zijn opgetogen om Simson te binden, om hem te doen, gelijk als hij ons gedaan heeft. 11Toen kwamen drie duizend mannen af uit Juda tot het hol der rots Etam, en zeiden tot Simson: Wist gij niet, dat de Filistijnen over ons heersen? Waarom hebt gij ons dan dit gedaan? En hij zeide tot hen: Gelijk als zij mij gedaan hebben, alzo heb ik hunlieden gedaan. 12En zij zeiden tot hem: Wij zijn afgekomen om u te binden, om u over te geven in de hand der Filistijnen. Toen zeide Simson tot hen: Zweert mij, dat gijlieden op mij niet zult aanvallen. 13En zij spraken tot hem, zeggende: Neen, maar wij zullen u wel binden, en u in hunlieder hand overgeven; doch wij zullen u geenszins doden. En zij bonden hem met twee nieuwe touwen, en voerden hem op van de rots. 14Als hij kwam tot Lechi, zo juichten de Filistijnen hem tegemoet; maar de Geest des HEEREN werd vaardig over hem; en de touwen, die aan zijn armen waren, werden als linnen draden, die van het vuur gebrand zijn, en zijn banden versmolten van zijn handen. 15En hij vond een vochtig ezelskinnebakken, en hij strekte zijn hand uit, en nam het, en sloeg daarmede duizend man. 16Toen zeide Simson: Met een ezelskinnebakken, een hoop, twee hopen, met een ezelskinnebakken heb ik duizend man geslagen. 17En het geschiedde, als hij geeindigd had te spreken, zo wierp hij het kinnebakken uit zijn hand, en hij noemde dezelve plaats Ramath-Lechi. 18Als nu hem zeer dorstte, zo riep hij tot den HEERE, en zeide: Gij hebt door de hand van Uw knecht dit grote heil gegeven; zou ik dan nu van dorst sterven, en vallen in de hand dezer onbesnedenen? 19Toen kloofde God de holle plaats, die in Lechi is, en er ging water uit van dezelve, en hij dronk. Toen kwam zijn geest weder, en hij werd levend. Daarom noemde hij haar naam: De fontein des aanroepers, die in Lechi is, tot op dezen dag. 20En hij richtte Israel, in de dagen der Filistijnen, twintig jaren.
