1Κατ' εκείνας δε τας ημέρας βασιλεύς δεν ήτο εν τω Ισραήλ· και ήτο Λευΐτης τις παροικών εις τα πλευρά του όρους Εφραΐμ, όστις έλαβεν εις εαυτόν γυναίκα παλλακήν εκ Βηθλεέμ Ιούδα. 2Και επόρνευσεν η παλλακή αυτού παρ' αυτώ, και ανεχώρησεν απ' αυτού εις τον οίκον του πατρός αυτής εις Βηθλεέμ Ιούδα, και ήτο εκεί τέσσαρας ολοκλήρους μήνας. 3Και εσηκώθη ο ανήρ αυτής και υπήγε κατόπιν αυτής, διά να λαλήση ευμενώς προς αυτήν, ώστε να κάμη αυτήν να επιστρέψη· είχε δε μεθ' εαυτού τον δούλον αυτού και δύο όνους· και αυτή εισήγαγεν αυτόν εις τον οίκον του πατρός αυτής· και ότε είδεν αυτόν ο πατήρ της νέας, εχάρη εις την έντευξιν αυτού. 4Και εκράτησεν αυτόν ο πενθερός αυτού, ο πατήρ της νέας· και εκάθισε μετ' αυτού τρεις ημέρας· και έφαγον και έπιον και διενυκτέρευσαν εκεί. 5Και την τετάρτην ημέραν, ότε ηγέρθησαν το πρωΐ, εσηκώθη να αναχωρήση· και είπεν ο πατήρ της νέας προς τον γαμβρόν αυτού, Στήριξον την καρδίαν σου με ολίγον άρτον και μετά ταύτα θέλετε υπάγει. 6Και εκάθισαν και έφαγον και έπιον οι δύο ομού· και είπεν ο πατήρ της νέας προς τον άνδρα, Ευαρεστήθητι, παρακαλώ, και διανυκτέρευσον, και ας ευφρανθή η καρδία σου. 7Και ότε ο άνθρωπος εσηκώθη να αναχωρήση, ο πενθερός αυτού εβίασεν αυτόν· όθεν έμεινε και διενυκτέρευσεν εκεί. 8Και ηγέρθη το πρωΐ την πέμπτην ημέραν διά να αναχωρήση· και είπεν ο πατήρ της νέας, Στήριξον, παρακαλώ, την καρδίαν σου. Και έμειναν εωσού έκλινεν η ημέρα, και συνέφαγον αμφότεροι. 9Και ότε ο άνθρωπος εσηκώθη να αναχωρήση, αυτός και η παλλακή αυτού και ο δούλος αυτού, είπε προς αυτόν ο πενθερός αυτού, ο πατήρ της νέας, Ιδού, τώρα η ημέρα κλίνει προς εσπέραν· διανυκτερεύσατε, παρακαλώ· ιδού η ημέρα υπάγει να τελειώση· διανυκτέρευσον ενταύθα, και ας ευφρανθή η καρδία σου· και αύριον σηκόνεσθε το πρωΐ διά την οδοιπορίαν σας και ύπαγε εις την κατοικίαν σου. 10Ο άνθρωπος όμως δεν ηθέλησε να διανυκτερεύση· αλλ' εσηκώθη και ανεχώρησε και ήλθεν έως απέναντι της Ιεβούς, ήτις είναι η Ιερουσαλήμ· και είχε μεθ' εαυτού δύο όνους σαμαρωμένους, και η παλλακή αυτού ήτο μετ' αυτού. 11Και ότε επλησίασαν εις την Ιεβούς, η ημέρα ήτο πολύ προχωρημένη· και είπεν ο δούλος προς τον κύριον αυτού, Ελθέ, παρακαλώ, και ας στρέψωμεν προς την πόλιν ταύτην των Ιεβουσαίων, και ας διανυκτερεύσωμεν εν αυτή. 12Και είπεν ο κύριος αυτού προς αυτόν, Δεν θέλομεν στρέψει προς πόλιν αλλοτρίων, ήτις δεν είναι εκ των υιών Ισραήλ· αλλά θέλομεν περάσει έως Γαβαά. 13Και είπε προς τον δούλον αυτού, Ελθέ, και ας πλησιάσωμεν εις ένα εκ των τόπων τούτων και ας διανυκτερεύσωμεν εν Γαβαά ή εν Ραμά. 14Και διέβησαν και υπήγαν· και έδυσεν επ' αυτούς ο ήλιος πλησίον της Γαβαά, ήτις είναι του Βενιαμίν. 15Και εστράφησαν εκεί, διά να εισέλθωσι να καταλύσωσιν εν Γαβαά· και ότε εισήλθεν, εκάθισεν εν τη πλατεία της πόλεως· και δεν ήτο άνθρωπος να παραλάβη αυτούς εις την οικίαν αυτού διά να διανυκτερεύσωσι. 16Και ιδού, άνθρωπος γέρων ήρχετο από του έργου αυτού εκ του αγρού το εσπέρας· και ο άνθρωπος ήτο εκ του όρους Εφραΐμ, παρώκει δε εν Γαβαά· οι δε άνθρωποι του τόπου ήσαν Βενιαμίται. 17Και υψώσας τους οφθαλμούς αυτού, είδε τον άνθρωπον τον οδοιπόρον εν τη πλατεία της πόλεως· και είπεν ο άνθρωπος ο γέρων, Που υπάγεις; και πόθεν έρχεσαι; 18Ο δε είπε προς αυτόν, Ημείς διαβαίνομεν εκ Βηθλεέμ Ιούδα έως των πλευρών του όρους Εφραΐμ· εκείθεν είμαι εγώ· και υπήγα έως Βηθλεέμ Ιούδα, και τώρα υπάγω εις τον οίκον του Κυρίου· και δεν είναι ουδείς να με παραλάβη εις την οικίαν αυτού· 19έχομεν δε άχυρα και τροφήν διά τους όνους ημών, έχομεν και προσέτι άρτον και οίνον δι' εμέ και διά την δούλην σου και διά τον νέον, όστις είναι μετά των δούλων σου· δεν έχομεν έλλειψιν ουδενός πράγματος. 20Και είπεν ο άνθρωπος ο γέρων, Ειρήνη εις σέ· και παν ό,τι χρειάζεσαι εγώ φροντίζω· μόνον εν τη πλατεία μη διανυκτερεύσης. 21Και εισήγαγεν αυτόν εις τον οίκον αυτού και έδωκε τροφήν εις τους όνους· και έπλυναν τους πόδας αυτών, και έφαγον και έπιον. 22Ενώ ούτοι εύφραινον τας καρδίας αυτών, ιδού, οι άνδρες της πόλεως, άνθρωποι παράνομοι περιεκύκλωσαν την οικίαν, κρούοντες εις την θύραν· και είπον προς τον άνθρωπον τον κύριον της οικίας τον γέροντα, λέγοντες, Έκβαλε τον άνθρωπον, τον ελθόντα εις την οικίαν σου, διά να γνωρίσωμεν αυτόν. 23Και εξήλθε προς αυτούς ο άνθρωπος, ο κύριος της οικίας, και είπε προς αυτούς, Μη, αδελφοί μου, παρακαλώ, μη πράξητε τούτο το κακόν· αφού ο άνθρωπος ούτος εισήλθεν εις την οικίαν μου, μη πράξητε τοιαύτην αφροσύνην· 24ιδού, η θυγάτηρ μου η παρθένος και η παλλακή αυτού· τώρα θέλω φέρει αυτάς έξω, και ταπεινώσατε αυτάς και κάμετε εις αυτάς ό,τι φανή αρεστόν εις τους οφθαλμούς σας· αλλ' εις τον άνθρωπον τούτον μη πράξητε έργον τοιαύτης αφροσύνης. 25Οι άνδρες όμως δεν ηθέλησαν να ακούσωσιν αυτόν· και έλαβεν ο άνθρωπος την παλλακήν αυτού και έφερεν αυτήν έξω προς αυτούς· και εγνώρισαν αυτήν και ύβρισαν εις αυτήν όλην την νύκτα έως πρωΐ· και καθώς εφάνη η αυγή, απέλυσαν αυτήν. 26Και ήλθεν η γυνή προς το χάραγμα της ημέρας και έπεσε παρά την θύραν της οικίας του ανθρώπου, όπου ήτο ο κύριος αυτής, εωσού έφεγξε. 27Και εσηκώθη ο κύριος αυτής το πρωΐ και ήνοιξε τας θύρας της οικίας και εξήλθε διά να υπάγη εις την οδόν αυτού· και ιδού, η γυνή η παλλακή αυτού πεσμένη εις την θύραν της οικίας και αι χείρες αυτής επί του κατωφλίου. 28Και είπε προς αυτήν, Σηκώθητι και ας υπάγωμεν. Αλλά δεν απεκρίθη. Τότε ανέλαβεν αυτήν επί τον όνον ο άνθρωπος, και εσηκώθη και υπήγεν εις τον τόπον αυτού. 29Και αφού ήλθεν εις την οικίαν αυτού, έλαβε την μάχαιραν και πιάσας την παλλακήν αυτού, διεμέλισεν αυτήν μετά των οστέων αυτής εις δώδεκα μέρη, και έστειλεν αυτά εις πάντα τα όρια του Ισραήλ. 30Και πάντες όσοι έβλεπον, έλεγον, Δεν έγεινεν ουδέ εφάνη τοιούτον πράγμα, αφ' ης ημέρας οι υιοί Ισραήλ ανέβησαν εκ γης Αιγύπτου, έως της ημέρας ταύτης· σκέφθητε περί τούτου, συμβουλεύθητε και λαλήσατε.
1In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah. 2His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there the space of four months. 3Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him. 4His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, retained him; and he stayed with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there. 5On the fourth day, they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart. The young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.” 6So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together: and the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.” 7The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again. 8He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines”; and they both ate. 9When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night: behold, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.” 10But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of donkeys saddled; his concubine also was with him. 11When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.” 12His master said to him, “We won’t turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.” 13He said to his servant, “Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.” 14So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin. 15They turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man who took them into his house to lodge. 16Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at evening: now the man was of the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites. 17He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?” 18He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to Yahweh’s house; and there is no man who takes me into his house. 19Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants: there is no want of anything.” 20The old man said, “Peace be to you; howsoever let all your wants lie on me; only don’t lodge in the street.” 21So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder; and they washed their feet, and ate and drink. 22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!” 23The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly. 24Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.” 25But the men wouldn’t listen to him: so the man laid hold of his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning: and when the day began to dawn, they let her go. 26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light. 27Her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28He said to her, “Get up, and let us be going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place. 29When he had come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel. 30It was so, that all who saw it said, “There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”

Toen drong hem zijn schoonvader, dat hij aldaar wederom vernachtte. 8Als hij op den vijfden dag des morgens vroeg op was, om weg te trekken, zo zeide de vader van de jonge vrouw: Sterk toch uw hart. En zij vertoefden, totdat de dag zich neigde; en zij beiden aten te zamen. 9Toen maakte de man zich op, om weg te trekken, hij, en zijn bijwijf, en zijn jongen; en zijn schoonvader, de vader van de jonge vrouw, zeide: Zie toch, de dag heeft afgenomen, dat het avond zal worden, vernacht toch; zie, de dag legert zich, vernacht hier, en laat uw hart vrolijk zijn, en maak u morgen vroeg op uws weegs, en ga naar uw tent. 10Doch de man wilde niet vernachten, maar stond op, en trok weg, en kwam tot tegenover Jebus (dewelke is Jeruzalem), en met hem het paar gezadelde ezelen; ook was zijn bijwijf met hem. 11Als zij nu bij Jebus waren, zo was de dag zeer gedaald; en de jongen zeide tot zijn heer: Trek toch voort, en laat ons in deze stad der Jebusieten wijken, en daarin vernachten. 12Maar zijn heer zeide tot hem: Wij zullen herwaarts niet wijken tot een vreemde stad, die niet is van de kinderen Israels; maar wij zullen voorttrekken tot Gibea toe. 13Voorts zeide hij tot zijn jongen: Ga voort, dat wij tot een van die plaatsen naderen, en te Gibea of te Rama vernachten. 14Alzo togen zij voort, en wandelden; en de zon ging hun onder bij Gibea, dewelke Benjamins is; 15En zij weken daarheen, dat zij inkwamen, om in Gibea te vernachten. Toen hij nu inkwam, zat hij neder in een straat der stad, want er was niemand, die hen in huis nam, om te vernachten. 16En ziet, een oud man kwam van zijn werk van het veld in den avond, welke man ook was van het gebergte van Efraim, doch als vreemdeling verkeerde te Gibea; maar de lieden dezer plaats waren kinderen van Jemini. 17Als hij nu zijn ogen ophief, zo zag hij die reizenden man op de straat der stad; en de oude man zeide: Waar trekt gij henen, en van waar komt gij? 18En hij zeide tot hem: Wij trekken door van Bethlehem-Juda tot aan de zijden van het gebergte van Efraim, van waar ik ben; en ik was naar Bethlehem-Juda getogen, maar ik trek nu naar het huis des HEEREN; en er is niemand, die mij in huis neemt. 19Daar toch onze ezelen zowel stro als voeder hebben, en ook brood en wijn is voor mij, en voor uw dienstmaagd, en voor de jongen, die bij uw knechten is; er is aan geen ding gebrek. 20Toen zeide de oude man: Vrede zij u! al wat u ontbreekt, is toch bij mij; alleenlijk vernacht niet op de straat. 21En hij bracht hem in zijn huis, en gaf aan de ezelen voeder; en hun voeten gewassen hebbende, zo aten en dronken zij. 22Toen zij nu hun hart vrolijk maakten, ziet, zo omringden de mannen van die stad (mannen, die Belials kinderen waren) het huis, kloppende op de deur; en zij spraken tot den ouden man, den heer des huizes, zeggende: Breng den man, die in uw huis gekomen is, uit, opdat wij hem bekennen. 23En de man, de heer des huizes, ging tot hen uit, en zeide tot hen: Niet, mijn broeders, doet toch zo kwalijk niet; naardien deze man in mijn huis gekomen is, zo doet zulke dwaasheid niet. 24Ziet, mijn dochter die maagd is, en zijn bijwijf, die zal ik nu uitbrengen, dat gij die schendt, en haar doet, wat goed is in uw ogen; maar doet aan dezen man zulk een dwaas ding niet. 25Maar de mannen wilden naar hem niet horen. Toen greep de man zijn bijwijf, en bracht haar uit tot hen daarbuiten; en zij bekenden haar, en waren met haar bezig den gansen nacht tot aan den morgen, en lieten haar gaan, als de dageraad oprees. 26En deze vrouw kwam tegen het aanbreken van den morgenstond, en viel neder voor de deur van het huis des mans, waarin haar heer was, totdat het licht werd. 27Als nu haar heer des morgens opstond en de deuren van het huis opendeed, en uitging om zijns weegs te gaan, ziet, zo lag de vrouw, zijn bijwijf, aan de deur van het huis, en haar handen op den dorpel. 28En hij zeide tot haar: Sta op, en laat ons trekken; maar niemand antwoordde. Toen nam hij haar op den ezel, en de man maakte zich op, en toog naar zijn plaats. 29Als hij nu in zijn huis kwam, zo nam hij een mes, en greep zijn bijwijf, en deelde haar met haar beenderen in twaalf stukken; en hij zond ze in alle landpalen van Israel. 30En het geschiedde, dat al wie het zag, zeide: Zulks is niet geschied noch gezien, van dien dag af, dat de kinderen Israels uit Egypteland zijn opgetogen, tot op dezen dag; legt uw hart daarop, geeft raad en spreekt!
