1Vậy thì, sự trổi hơn của người Giu-đa là thể nào, hay là phép cắt bì có ích gì chăng? 2Ích lớn đủ mọi đàng. Trước hết là điều nầy: ấy là lời phán của Ðức Chúa Trời đã phó cho dân Giu-đa. 3Mà làm sao! nếu một vài người trong bọn họ không thành tín, thì sự không thành tín của họ có làm cho sự thành tín của Ðức Chúa Trời ra hư không sao? 4chẳng hề như vậy! Thà xưng Ðức Chúa Trời là thật và loài người là giả dối, như có chép rằng: Ấy vậy Chúa sẽ được xưng công bình trong lời phán của Ngài, Và sẽ được thắng khi chịu xét đoán. 5Song nếu sự không công bình của chúng ta tỏ ra sự công bình của Ðức Chúa Trời, thì sẽ nói làm sao? Khi Ðức Chúa Trời giáng cơn giận thì Ngài không công bình sao? (Tôi nói như cách người ta nói). 6Chẳng hề như vậy! Nếu vậy thì Ðức Chúa Trời đoán xét thế gian thể nào? 7Nhưng, nếu lẽ thật Ðức Chúa Trời bởi sự nói dối của tôi mà được sự vinh hiển lớn hơn, thì sao tôi còn bị đoán xét như kẻ có tội? 8vậy thì, sao chúng ta không làm sự dữ cho được sự lành, như kẻ gièm pha đã cáo và quyết rằng chúng ta dạy điều ấy? Sự đoán phạt những người đó là công bình. 9Thế nào! Chúng ta có điều gì hơn chăng? Chẳng có, vì chúng ta đã tỏ ra rằng người Giu-đa và người Gờ-réc thảy đều phục dưới quyền tội lỗi, 10như có chép rằng: Chẳng có một người công bình nào hết, dẫu một người cũng không. 11Chẳng có một người nào hiểu biết, Chẳng có một người nào tìm kiếm Ðức Chúa Trời. 12Chúng nó đều sai lạc cả, thảy cùng nhau ra vô ích; Chẳng có một người làm điều lành, dẫu một người cũng không. 13Họng chúng nó như huyệt mả mở ra; Dùng lưỡi mình để phỉnh gạt; Dưới môi chúng nó có nọc rắn hổ mang. 14Miệng chúng nó đầy những lời nguyền rủa và cay đắng. 15Chúng nó có chơn nhẹ nhàng đặng làm cho đổ máu. 16Trên đường lối chúng nó rặc những sự tàn hại và khổ nạn, 17Chúng nó chẳng hề biết con đường bình an. 18Chẳng có sự kính sợ Ðức Chúa Trời ở trước mặt chúng nó. 19Vả, chúng ta biết rằng những điều mà luật pháp nói, là nói cho mọi kẻ ở dưới luật pháp, hầu cho miệng nào cũng phải ngậm lại, cả thiên hạ đều nhận tội trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời; 20vì chẳng có một người nào bởi việc làm theo luật pháp mà sẽ được xưng công bình trước mặt Ngài, vì luật pháp cho người ta biết tội lỗi. 21Nhưng hiện bây giờ, sự công bình của Ðức Chúa Trời, mà luật pháp và các đấng tiên tri đều làm chứng cho, đã bày tỏ ra ngoài luật pháp; 22tức là sự công bình của Ðức Chúa Trời, bởi sự tin đến Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ, cho mọi người nào tin, chẳng có phân biệt chi hết, 23vì mọi người đều đã phạm tội, thiếu mất sự vinh hiển của Ðức Chúa Trời, 24và họ nhờ ân điển Ngài mà được xưng công bình nhưng không, bởi sự chuộc tội đã làm trọn trong Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ, 25là Ðấng Ðức Chúa Trời đã lập làm của lễ chuộc tội, bởi đức tin trong huyết Ðấng ấy. Ngài đã bày tỏ sự công bình mình như vậy, vì đã bỏ qua các tội phạm trước kia, 26trong buổi Ngài nhịn nhục; tức là Ngài đã tỏ ra sự công bình Ngài trong thời hiện tại, tỏ ra mình là công bình và xưng công bình kẻ nào tin đến Ðức Chúa Jêsus. 27Vậy thì sự khoe mình ở đâu? Ðã bị trừ bỏ rồi. Bởi luật pháp nào? Luật pháp của việc làm chăng? Không phải, nhưng bởi luật pháp của đức tin; 28vì chúng ta kể rằng người ta được xưng công bình bởi đức tin, chớ không bởi việc làm theo luật pháp. 29Hay là, Ðức Chúa Trời chỉ là Ðức Chúa Trời của dân Giu-đa sao? Há chẳng phải cũng là Ðức Chúa Trời của dân ngoại ư? Phải, Ngài cũng là của dân ngoại nữa; 30Vì chỉ có một Ðức Chúa Trời, là Ðấng làm cho kẻ chịu cắt bì được xưng công bình bởi đức tin, cũng làm cho kẻ không chịu cắt bì được xưng công bình bởi đức tin nữa. 31Vậy, chúng ta nhơn đức tin mà bỏ luật pháp hay sao? Chẳng hề như vậy! Trái lại, chúng ta làm vững bền luật pháp.
1Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the profit of circumcision? 2Much in every way! Because first of all, they were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God? 4May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, “That you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment.” 5But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? I speak like men do. 6May it never be! For then how will God judge the world? 7For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? 8Why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), “Let us do evil, that good may come?” Those who say so are justly condemned. 9What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin. 10As it is written, “There is no one righteous; no, not one. 11There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God. 12They have all turned aside. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not so much as one.” 13“Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit.” “The poison of vipers is under their lips”; 14“whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” 15“Their feet are swift to shed blood. 16Destruction and misery are in their ways. 17The way of peace, they haven’t known.” 18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God. 20Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets; 22even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction, 23for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; 24being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; 25whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance; 26to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus. 27Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. 29Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith. 31Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.

Zal hun ongelovigheid het geloof van God te niet doen? 4Dat zij verre. Doch God zij waarachtig, maar alle mens leugenachtig; gelijk als geschreven is: Opdat Gij gerechtvaardigd wordt in Uw woorden, en overwint, wanneer Gij oordeelt. 5Indien nu onze ongerechtigheid Gods gerechtigheid bevestigt, wat zullen wij zeggen? Is God onrechtvaardig, als Hij toorn over ons brengt? (Ik spreek naar den mens.) 6Dat zij verre, anderszins hoe zal God de wereld oordelen? 7Want indien de waarheid Gods door mijn leugen overvloediger is geworden, tot Zijn heerlijkheid, wat word ik ook nog als een zondaar geoordeeld? 8En zeggen wij niet liever (gelijk wij gelasterd worden, en gelijk sommigen zeggen, dat wij zeggen): Laat ons het kwade doen, opdat het goede daaruit kome? Welker verdoemenis rechtvaardig is. 9Wat dan? Zijn wij uitnemender? Ganselijk niet; want wij hebben te voren beschuldigd beiden Joden en Grieken, dat zij allen onder de zonde zijn; 10Gelijk geschreven is: Er is niemand rechtvaardig, ook niet een; 11Er is niemand, die verstandig is, er is niemand, die God zoekt. 12Allen zijn zij afgeweken, te zamen zijn zij onnut geworden; er is niemand, die goed doet, er is ook niet tot een toe. 13Hun keel is een geopend graf; met hun tongen plegen zij bedrog; slangenvenijn is onder hun lippen. 14Welker mond vol is van vervloeking en bitterheid; 15Hun voeten zijn snel om bloed te vergieten; 16Vernieling en ellendigheid is in hun wegen; 17En den weg des vredes hebben zij niet gekend. 18Er is geen vreze Gods voor hun ogen. 19Wij weten nu, dat al wat de wet zegt, zij dat spreekt tot degenen, die onder de wet zijn; opdat alle mond gestopt worde en de gehele wereld voor God verdoemelijk zij. 20Daarom zal uit de werken der wet geen vlees gerechtvaardigd worden, voor Hem; want door de wet is de kennis der zonde. 21Maar nu is de rechtvaardigheid Gods geopenbaard geworden zonder de wet, hebbende getuigenis van de wet en de profeten: 22Namelijk de rechtvaardigheid Gods door het geloof van Jezus Christus, tot allen, en over allen, die geloven; want er is geen onderscheid. 23Want zij hebben allen gezondigd, en derven de heerlijkheid Gods; 24En worden om niet gerechtvaardigd, uit Zijn genade, door de verlossing, die in Christus Jezus is; 25Welken God voorgesteld heeft tot een verzoening, door het geloof in Zijn bloed, tot een betoning van Zijn rechtvaardigheid, door de vergeving der zonden, die te voren geschied zijn onder de verdraagzaamheid Gods; 26Tot een betoning van Zijn rechtvaardigheid in dezen tegenwoordigen tijd; opdat Hij rechtvaardig zij, en rechtvaardigende dengene, die uit het geloof van Jezus is. 27Waar is dan de roem? Hij is uitgesloten. Door wat wet? Der werken? Neen, maar door de wet des geloofs. 28Wij besluiten dan, dat de mens door het geloof gerechtvaardigd wordt, zonder de werken der wet. 29Is God een God der Joden alleen? en is Hij het niet ook der heidenen? Ja, ook der heidenen; 30Nademaal Hij een enig God is, Die de besnijdenis rechtvaardigen zal uit het geloof, en de voorhuid door het geloof. 31Doen wij dan de wet te niet door het geloof? Dat zij verre; maar wij bevestigen de wet.
